• What ORM for .NET should I use?

  I'm relatively new to .NET and have being using Linq2Sql for a almost a year, but it lacks some of the features I'm looking for now. I'm going to start a new project in which I want to use an ORM with the following characteristics: It has to be very productive, I don't want to be dealing with the access layer to save or retrieve objects from or to the database, but it should allows me to easily tweak any object before actually commit it to the database; also it should allows me to work easily with a changing database schema It should allows me to extend the objects mapped from the database, for example to add virtual attributes to them (virtual columns to a table) It has to be (at least almost) database agnostic, it should allows me to work with different databases in a transparent way It has to have not so much configuration or must be based on conventions to make it work It should allows me to work with Linq So, do you know any ORM that I could use? Thank you for your help. EDIT I know that an option is to use NHibernate. This appears as the facto standard for enterprise level applications, but also it seems that is not very productive because its deep learning curve. In other way, I have read in some other post here in SO that it doesn't integrate well with Linq. Is all of that true?

  I'm slowly learning access to make a database of products and suppliers for my parents' business. What i've got is a table of products indexed by our product reference and 2 more tables for 2 different suppliers that contains the suppliers product reference and price that links with our reference. I've made a query that performs a left outer join such that it returns a table of our products with each supplier's reference and price, i.e: Ref | Product Name | Supplier 1 Ref | Supplier 1 Price | Supplier 2 Ref | Supplier 2 Price Here's the query I used: SELECT Catalog.Ref, Catalog.[Product Name], Catalog.Price, [D Products].[Supplier Ref], [D Products].Cost, [GS Products].[Supplier Ref], [GS Products].Cost FROM ([Catalog] LEFT JOIN [D Products] ON Catalog.Ref = [D Products].Ref) LEFT JOIN [GS Products] ON Catalog.Ref = [GS Products].Ref; Not all products are available from both suppliers, hence the outer join. What I want to do (with a query?) is to take the table produced by the query above and simply show the product reference, cheapest supplier reference and cheapest supplier price, i.e: Ref | Cheapest Suppplier Ref | Cheapest Supplier Price Unfortunately my SQL knowledge isn't quite good enough to figure this out, but if anyone can help i'd really appreciate it. • Cannot access SMC8014WG-SI provided by TimeWarner/RoadRunner administrative interface...

  I just received installation of RoadRunner internet/TV/Voice and I was given a wi-fi router from the TimeWarner folks. The model is a SMC SMC8014WG-SI. Unfortunately, the password it uses is WEP and that is, as we all know, completely insecure. The tech that was here didn't know how to change it to something like WPA2 w/TKIP, and I was on hold for 20 minutes with the TimeWarner folks before I gave up. My problem is that the default web interface (http://192.168.0.1) isn't responding. I can ping it, I can access the internet through it, but I can't get to the admin interface. I did a "hard reset" of the device but still no dice. My suspicion is that the wi-fi admin interface is disabled (a common setting) but the wired interface isn't working on either of my two laptops (I've tried two laptops with two different cables, no link light activated). Am I SOL? Did they lock this down so I can't do what I want to do? Worst-case is I just hook up my go-to WRT54G router to the other modem and leave this one turned off, but I'd rather use their hardware to avoid any "It's not our problem" in the future. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

  When I make a restore point and I come back to restore the windows 7, it gives this error: No restore point have been created on your computer system drives, to create a restore point open system protection. I've made a restore point why does it give this error? What should I do? I completely know how to make restore points and I've made some on the laptop and other devices but in my computer which have windows 7 when I make restore point and when I want to use them it gives the error! Please help. I'm not English so can't speak it well.

• Oracle Retail Mobile Point-of-Service

  When most people discuss mobile in retail, they immediately go to shopping applications.  While I agree the consumer side of mobile is huge, I believe its also important to arm store associates with mobile tools.  There are around a dozen major roll-outs of mobile POS to chain retailers, and all have been successful.  This does not, however, signal the demise of traditional registers.  Retailers will adopt mobile POS slowly and reduce the number of fixed registers over time, but there's likely to be a combination of both for the foreseeable future.  Even Apple retains at least one fixed register in every store, you just have to know where to look. The business benefits for mobile POS are pretty straightforward: 1. Faster checkout.  Walmart's CFO recently reported that for every second they shave off the average transaction time, they can potentially save $12M a year in labor.  I think its more likely that labor will be redeployed to enhance the customer experience. 2. Smarter associates.  The sales associates on the floor need the same access to information that consumers have, if not more.  They need ready access to product details, reviews, inventory, etc. to meet consumer expectations.  In a recent study, 40% of consumers said a savvy store associate can impact their final product selection more than a website. 3. Lower costs.  Mobile POS hardware (iPod touch + sled) costs about a fifth of fixed registers, not to mention the reclaimed space that can be used for product displays. But almost all Mobile POS solutions can claim those benefits equally.  Where there's differentiation is on the technical side.  Oracle recently announced availability of the Oracle Retail Mobile Point-of-Service, and it has three big technology advantages in the market: 1. Portable. We used a popular open-source component called PhoneGap that abstracts the app from the underlying OS and hardware so that iOS, Android, and other platforms could be supported.  Further, we used Web technologies such as HTML5 and JavaScript, which are commonly known by many programmers, as opposed to ObjectiveC which is more difficult to find.  The screen can adjust to different form-factors and sizes, just like you see with browsers.  In the future when a new, zippy device gets released, retailers will have the option to move to that device more easily than if they used a native app. 2. Flexible.  Our Mobile POS is free with the Oracle Retail Point-of-Service product.  Retailers can use any combination of fixed and mobile registers, and those ratios can change as required.  Perhaps start with 1 mobile and 4 fixed per store, then transition over time to 4 mobile and 1 fixed without any additional software licenses.  Our scalable solution supports lots of combinations. 3. Consistent.  Because our Mobile POS is fully integrated to our traditional POS, the same business logic is reused.  Third-party Mobile POS solutions often handle pricing, promotions, and tax calculations separately leading to possible inconsistencies within the store.  That won't happen with Oracle's solution. For many retailers, Mobile POS can lower costs, increase customer service, and generally enhance a consumer's in-store experience.  Apple led the way, but lots of other retailers are discovering the many benefits of adding mobile capabilities in their stores.  Just be sure to examine both the business and technology benefits so you get the most value from your solution for the longest period of time.

• Wireless BMC4311 driver install

  Exasperated with Ubuntu 12.04 and BCM4311 driver. HP2133 (was SUSE 10) Installed 12.04 in March. It ran well until November with no updates) then updates killed my wireless controller. Trolled forums & other for fix. Tried sudo -apt-get ing & gedit ing. Finally got it working (on full update with STA driver) Hwew!—thought that was it, only to fail again after 3-4 days. Tried all the fixes again but sudo -apt-get ing & gedit ing does not fix. I'm not without experience either: first 'boot-loader' I/P from 20 switch panel, seq to 4096 bit core-store: run to I/P larger processes from paper tape reader. Gone thru acoustic-coupled networks-to-billboards (before 'the net') pre-DOS, DOS, Windows 3.1 & all the others. This is a tough problem. Any advice?

• Access Windows Home Server from an Ubuntu Computer on your Network

  If you’re a Windows Home Server user, there may be times when you need to access it from an Ubuntu machine on your network. Today we take a look at the process of accessing files on your home server from Ubuntu. Note: In this example we’re using Windows Home Server with PowerPack 3, and Ubuntu 10.04 running on a home network. Access WHS from Ubuntu To access files on your home server from Ubuntu, click on Places then select Network. You should now see your home server listed in the Network folder as well as other Windows machines…double-click the server to access it. If you don’t see your server listed, you might need to go into Windows Network \ Workgroup and find it there. You’ll be prompted to enter in the correct credentials for WHS just as you would when accessing it from a Windows machine. It’s your choice if you want to have the password remembered or not…make your selection and click Connect. Now you will see the available folders on your home server. In this example we signed in with Administrator credentials, so we have access to everything. Double-click on the folder share you want to access content from…here we see MS Office documents on the server. Or, here we take a look at a music folder with various MP3 files which you can make Ubuntu play. You can access the files directly from the server, provided there is a Linux app that can handle the file type. In this example we opened a Word document in OpenOffice. Here we’re playing an MKV movie file from the server in Totem Movie Player.   You can easily search for files on the server as well… If you want to store your Ubuntu files on WHS it’s just a matter of dragging them to the correct WHS folder you want them in. If you’re using an Ubuntu computer on your home network and need to access files from Windows Home Server, luckily it’s a straight-forward process. You’ll often have to find the correct software to use Windows files, but even that’s getting much easier with version 10.04.   Were you aware there are two versions of the Access .accdb file format? The 2007 “ACE” version and the 2010 “ACE” version both use different drivers. If you’ve tried to use the Access Database .accdb format on DiscountASP.NET servers and it failed you must have been using a Data file created with the 2010 version of Access. I connect to a PPTP VPN server and it works well, but when I'm connected to that VPN I don't have Internet access but private network access. If I check "Use this connection only for resources on its network", I have Internet access, but this way I haven't access to my company's private network. What's the problem? Help, please.

  I need to restrict access by password to my web root apache test server (ie http://localhost) but allow access to subfolders (ie: http://localhost/testsite) I did create the .htpasswd and .htaccess, and put the .htaccess to web root (http://localhost) so when trying to access web root, it asks for user and pass, but so does in subfolders (ie: trying to access http://localhost/testite) I want to be asked for password on web root, but not on subfolders. Is that possible?

  We have a large codebase that uses ADO under 32-bit, and we need to convert the code to 64-bit. We were using the Jet provider, but I know this is not supported under x64. We're importing definitions from msado15.dll. As of a while ago a 64-bit version of this DLL became available, but we are unable to get it to work. Obviously, we tested the code under 32 bit and got the desired results. On the 64-bit machine, the code explicitly imports from the known 64-bit version of msado15.dll (v6.1.7600.nnn). The machine has had the Office Data Providers (AccessDatabaseEngine_x64.exe) applied to get the new ACE drivers (ACEODBC.DLL, v14.nnn.nnn.nnn). If I look at Data Source under Administrator Tools (I know ODBC isn't the same as ADO, it was just to confirm the DLL was installed correctly), it shows the expected DLL. I can even confirm, using Process Explorer, that the version of msado15.dll it loads at run time (thus confirming that COM is finding the ADO dll) is the 64-bit version. I believe we have MDAC 2.8 installed (we have msado28.tlb in the same place as msado15.dll, but that might have been installed by AccessDatabaseEngine_x64.exe). The test machine is Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit. The test code was recompiled on that machine using VS2008 for x64 in full Release and run externally. And yet, we still get COM error 0x800a0e7a (Provider not found). Is there anything any one can suggest as to why this isn't working, or what further tests / checks I can perform to verify that I have all the right stuff on the machine (and thus, that it should work)? I know that ODBC will work under x64 (tried the test program using that) but rewriting our code base for ODBC would be undesirable!

I have followed the steps as per the tutorial, but am getting errors... 1) Download / install enterprise library 2) Add references to the blocks I need (common / data) 3) Imports Imports Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Common Imports Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data 4) Through the enterprise library config software. I open up the web.config from my site. I then click Blocks, then Add data settings... fill in my details and save / close 5) I then (thinking setup is complete) try to get an instance of the database via Dim db As Database = DatabaseFactory.CreateDatabase() 6) I compile and receive the following error: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data, Version=5.0.414.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference.   I learnt that I should be using service classes to persist entities into the database instead of putting such logic in models/controllers. I currently made my service class something like class Application_DAO_User { protected $user; public function __construct(User $user) { $this->user = $user } public function edit($name, ...) { $this->user->name = $name; ... $this->em->flush(); } } I wonder if this should be the structure of a service class? where a service object represents a entity/model?   Hi- I'm trying to use an external library DevExpress.XtraTreeList.v8.1.dll in my vsto office addin built using VS2010 beta 2. I am getting the following compile time error: DevExpress.Utils.AppareanceObject threw an exception -- System.NotSupportedException. The error message goes on to say that for compatibility reasons I can use the NetFx40_LegacySecurityPolicy switch. I've tried putting this config variable in all of the following locations: 1) my applications config file. 2) C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.21006\msbuild.exe.config 3) C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\dev.exe.config None of these have resolved the problem. Here were the references I've used. re-enable cas msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee191568(VS.100).aspx How do I get rid of this error so I can build the application in vs 2010?

• MS Access 2003 - VBA for altering a table after a "SELECT * INTO tblTemp FROM tblMain" statement

  Hi. I use functions like the following to make temporary tables out of crosstabs queries. Function SQL_Tester() Dim sql As String If DCount("*", "MSysObjects", "[Name]='tblTemp'") Then DoCmd.DeleteObject acTable, "tblTemp" End If sql = "SELECT * INTO tblTemp from TblMain;" Debug.Print (sql) Set db = CurrentDb db.Execute (sql) End Function I do this so that I can then use more vba to take the temporary table to excel, use some of excel functionality (formulas and such) and then return the values to the original table (tblMain). Simple spot i am getting tripped up is that after the Select INTO statement I need to add a brand new additional column to that temporary table and I do not know how to do this: sql = "Create Table..." is like the only way i know how to do this and of course this doesn't work to well with the above approach because I can't create a table that has already been created after the fact, and I cannot create it before because the SELECT INTO statement approach will return a "table already exists" message. Any help? thanks guys!

• My MS Access control displays no text for appended items following an append query

  The control in question is part of a datasheet-style subform that feeds off a multi-field combo-box. The control is bound to the first field of the combo box, an ID field which is hidden from view (column width set to zero). Consequently, the second field (Code) is displayed in the control when an item is selected from the combo box. I'm using a form button action to append values to this datasheet. It seems that because I need to INSERT ID values in, the control is unable to display the corresponding Code value. Nothing is visible, unless I go manually into the combo box and select an item from it. How can I get the control to display the Code value?

  Today in firefox while surfing the internet, I opened a website it asked "This site may harm your computer" if you want to open this website add it in exception list. I added a website under exception list and trust this website. After that situation, whenever I opend this website, it always points toward the localhost untill internet connected. I have setup localhost through apache (xampp server). If internet not connected this website do not open anything but localhost still work as usaual. How can I remove this situation so that this website do not point to locathost? I am using winxp sp3. Same problem now appear in all browsers too.

  DoCmd.OpenForm "Database Search", acFormDS, , srcLastName & "AND " & srcFirstName This is only a small sample of the where clause - there are many more terms. First, there is a set of If, Then type tings up top that set the variable srcLastName and srcFirstName to some value. These are not the problem and work just fine. The trouble is getting them to return all values (for instance if you only want to search by one, on neither(return full database list)) Thus far I have settled for (in the if then section): srcLastName = "[Lastname] =" & Chr(34) & cboLastName & Chr(34) - to search for something and srcLastName = "[Lastname] <" & Chr(34) & "Nuthin" & Chr(34) - to return everything (not equal to an absurd and mispelled database term.) The trouble is that data that is null is also not returned. If I have a null firstname, it will not show up in any search period. is there a term I can set [lastname] and [firstname] equal to that will return EVERYTHING (null, open, data, numbers, wierd stuff and otherwise) in a search an SQL form of "give me everything shes got scotty" if you will. the real issue here comes from the data entry - if I could just know that the people would enter everything 100% of the time, this code would work. but forget to enter the persons age or whatever, and it wont return that entry. So far, the only other solution I have come up with is to put a counter in each if then statement. The count will go up by one for each thing that is being searched by. Then if the count is = 1, then I can search by something like just DoCmd.OpenForm "Database Search", acFormDS, , srcLastName or DoCmd.OpenForm "Database Search", acFormDS, , srcFirstName then revert back to the DoCmd.OpenForm "Database Search", acFormDS, , srcLastName & "AND " & srcFirstName when the count is 2 or more truoble here is that it only works for one (unless I so wanted to create a custon list of 2 combined, 3 combined, 4 combined, but that is not happening)

• What can I do about rsync of large files killing my laptop's wifi connection

  When I run a rsync to backup my home folder over the network like so: rsync -avhz --progress --delete /home/dbdean/ [email protected]:/home/backups/david/ I seem to have problems with my quite large .VirtualBox/HardDisks/Windows XP.vdi file. Occasionally the wifi will silently fail (the transfer stops, and any other network access is broken). If I reconnect the wifi to my network before the transfer times out, it happily keeps going (and other network access is back), but I can't just leave it unattended most of the time, as I have to keep an eye on it. I'm guessing this is probably a bug in the wireless card related to a particularly high sustained volume of network usage, but I'm not really sure where to start with diagnosing this problem so that I can provide a good bug report. Or it could be something else, I guess. Any help would be appreciated. My network card is an Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285, as lspci -k shows: 43:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. • Bang Notation and Dot Notation in VBA and MS-Access

  While perusing an application that I'm documenting, I've run across some examples of bang notation in accessing object properties/methods, etc. and in other places they use dot notation for what seems like the same purpose. Is there a difference or preference to using one or the other? Some simple googling only reveals limited information on the subject with some people actually using it in opposite cases. Perhaps there is a coding standards section from MS somewhere that indicates the method of madness?
