• Ubuntu 13.04/13.10 - low graphics mode/black screen after login

  Since last week, my Ubuntu 13.04 installation started booting up in low graphics mode out of nowhere. I tried a number of solutions found on this site but to no avail. The other night, I decided to upgrade to 13.10 to see if the issue would be fixed in the process. Since then, the system starts fine, but when I login to my account, I'm just presented with a black screen. I switched to the terminal and did any necessary updates, but to no avail. I don't even know where to start debugging this issue, so I'd appreciate if someone could point me towards the first place to start looking?

I have used it in four of my sites. Problem: Google is not using my custom defined title on my homepage. The website is aboveinfranet[dot]com. If I search "above infranet solutions inc" If you open the site, it will show you the right title that I wanted to achieve.

• How to show the right country domain in Google Places?

  Background A site has multiple ccTLDs: example.com for the US, example.co.uk for UK users, example.de for Germans, etc. Googling for certain city keywords will return rich snippets with a list of Google Places: Problem When searching on Google Germany, the domain for US users (example.com) appears instead of the corresponding ccTLD (example.de). This is not good user experience, as users would most likely like to book on a site localized for them (e.g. language and currency). Question What solutions are there? Is it possible to return different ccTLDs in rich snippets for Google searches in Germany/UK? Ideas Would implementing the hreflang annotation resolve this? What about entering multiple corresponding URLs in the structured data markup?

• Looking for full web based booking system

  I've searched around here but could not find any booking system that would suit my need. I hope maybe you can help me out. I've already seen question #11379 over here. Solutions provided there are not helping and scripts not interesting. I'm looking for a booking system that support infinite number of hotels/rooms/pricingschemes. There should be unlimited number of hotel owner/users, who can access control panel and set availability for their hotel. Or create seasonal prices and adjust them. I should be able to have 15% booking fee paid through credit cart. I can work on integration with my system, it just needs to have correct APi/functionality to support this. I love wordpress so if there are some nice plugins for that, I'm open for suggestions. But this is not a must. It should be php/mysql based as I'm not good at anything else :)

• dpkg returns error 10 when processing package php5-common

  I'm having trouble installing php in 13.04. Seems like the package manager can't (re)configure the php package. I already tried purging every php* package, removing the cache files in /var/cache/aptbut and other solutions I've found but nothing seems to work. Here's the error output: $ sudo dpkg --configure -a Setting up php5-common (5.4.9-4ubuntu2.3) ... dpkg: error processing php5-common (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 10 Errors were encountered while processing: php5-common sudo apt-get install -f sudo apt-get install php5-common php5 they all return the same error. How can I fix this?

• Efficient way of detecting a touched object in a game?

  Imagine a Sims-like 2D game for a touch based mobile phone where one can interact with virtually any object in the scene. How can I efficiently detect which object is being touched by the player? In my short experience, looping through all the visible objects in the scene and checking if they're touched has so far done the job, but when there may be many many moving objects in the screen that sounds kind of inefficient isn't it? Keeping the visible moving objects list can consume time in itself as one may have to loop through all of them each frame. Other solutions I've thought are: Spatial hashing. Divide the screen as a grid and place the visible objects in the corresponding bucket. Detection of the clicked object is fast but there's additional overhead for placing the objects in the correct bucket each frame. Maintaining a quad-tree. Moving objects have to be rearranged all the time, the previous solution looks better. What is usually done in this case?

• How to deal with animated doors in isometric tiles

  I've got a tricky issue I'm not sure how to tackle best: I have an animated tile of a door. When it's closed it should be sorted one way, but when it's openend it will need to be sorted a different way, as it belonging to a different(neighbouring tile). Here's the door closed: and the door opened: I imagine it would be possible to override the sorting system for such tiles and adjust the sorting based on the frame, but it feels a bit hacky. Has anyone encountered a similar scenario ? Any elegant solutions ?

• Partitions and cdrom are not mounted, and the bars are missing in Ubuntu 12.04

  Provide my spec and sorry for my poor English first. MB: Gigabyte G31M-S2L (bios ver. F9) CPU: intel E5200 2G RAM HD1: WD 160G with 2 partitions (partition 1:60G, NTFS, win xp; partition 2:100G, NTFS) HD2: WD 320G with 2 partitions (partition 3:220G, NTFS; partition 4:100G, ext4, Ubuntu) Recently, I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 on my desktop PC (on partition 4). At the beginning, everything looked great including the auto-mounting of partitions 1~3 and the unity (3D). However, after I deleted and re-allocated the partitions on HD2 and re-installed Ubuntu on partition 4, the partitions 1~3 are no longer auto-mounted when I logged in the desktop (and even the inserted cdrom would not be mounted either), and the launch bar and menu bar in unity (3D) are missing. The configurations during these two installations are all the same as default. Are there any possible reasons or solutions for this issue? Thank you in advance!

• Trying to update Asus BIOS: FreeDOS crashes

  My UX31 zenbook is experiencing some weird shutdown behavior when the battery drops below 50% and the internet seems to agree that updating the BIOS is a good step forward since there were issue with the kernel before. I downloaded both the correct BIOS file and the windows 7 utility tool and now need to boot FreeDOS to run, however, I've tried every method out there and they all fail (or so I think): Using unetbootin's FreeDOS 1.0 image I get to an error saying it couldn't run drivers then I get to a command line on disk A:. I assumed a dead end. Using unetbootin but with the FreeDOS 1.1 version image downloaded directly: get an error of "bad or missing command interpreter". I looked online and the solutions didn't work either. So, is there an alternative to FreeDOS or to installing a BIOS that I could use?

• Building Enterprise Smartphone App &ndash; Part 2: Platforms and Features

  This is part 2 in a series of posts based on a talk I gave recently at the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group.  Feel free to leave feedback. In the previous post I discussed what reasons a company might have for creating a smartphone application.  In this installment I will cover some of history and state of the different platforms as well as features that can be leveraged for building enterprise smartphone applications. Platforms Before you start choosing a platform to develop your solutions on it is good to understand how we got here and what features you can leverage. History To my memory we owe all of this to a product called the Apple Newton that came out in 1987. It was the first PDA and back then I was much more of an Apple fan.  I was very impressed with this device even though it never really went anywhere.  The Palm Pilot by US Robotics was the next major advancement in PDA. It had a simple short hand window that allowed for quick stylus entry.. Later, Windows CE came out and started the broadening of the PDA market. After that it was the Palm and CE operating systems that started showing up on cell phones and for some time these were the two dominant operating systems that were distributed with devices from multiple hardware vendors. Current The iPhone was the first smartphone to take away the stylus and give us a multi-touch interface.  It was a revolution in usability and really changed the attractiveness of smartphones for the general public.  This brought us to the beginning of the current state of the market with the concept of an online store that makes it easy for customers to get new features and functionality on demand. With Android, Google made this more than a one horse race.  Not only did they come to compete, their low cost actually made them the leading OS.  Of course what made Android so attractive also is its major fault.  It is so open that it has been a target for malware which leaves consumers exposed.  Fortunately for Google though, most consumers aren’t aware of the threat that they are under. Although Microsoft had put out one of the first smart phone operating systems with CE it had to play catch up and finally came out with the Windows Phone.  They have gone for a market approach between those of iOS and Android.  They support multiple hardware vendors like Google, but they kept a certification process for applications that is similar to Apple.  They also created a user interface that was different enough to give it a clear separation from the other two platforms. The result of all this is hundreds of millions of smartphones being sold monthly across all three platforms giving us a wide range of choices and challenges when it comes to developing solutions. Features So what are the features that make these devices flexible enough be considered for use in the enterprise? The biggest advantage of today's devices is network connectivity.  The ability to access information from multiple sources at a moment’s notice is critical for businesses.  Add to that the ability to communicate over a variety of text, voice and video modes and we have a powerful starting point. Every smartphone has a cameras and they are not just useful for posting to Instagram. We are seeing more applications such as Bing vision that allow us to scan just about any printed code or text to find information.  These capabilities have been made available to developers in the form of standard libraries for reading barcodes of just about an flavor and optical character recognition (OCR) interpretation. Bluetooth give us the ability to communicate with multiple devices. Whether these are headsets, keyboard or printers the wireless communication capabilities are just starting to evolve.  The more these wireless communication protocols grow, the more opportunities we will see to transfer data between users and a variety of devices. Local storage of information that can be called up even when the device cannot reach the network is the other big capability.  This give users the ability to work offline as well and transmit information when connections are restored. These are the tools that we have to work with to build applications that can be leveraged to gain a competitive advantage for companies that implement them. • Energy saving with two batteries (Gigabyte S1080 and similar)

  my today question is: how do I manage a tablet (Gigabyte 1080) with an additional battery in Ubuntu ? The control bar shows two separate batteries but starts to suck all the energy from the secundary battery, not leaving any power in it and ruining it (if I don't remove it earlier), and then starts with the primary battery. • Can desktop applications be written using javascript?

  Is it currently possible to write desktop applications using javascript, html, css? Possible solutions: Use Adobe AIR runtime and program in js. But no, if I'm using AIR, the AS3 suites it the most. So not a good option. GWT: No because it uses Java and then convert it to js or what ever. Pyjamas: Interesting. But I'm currently focusing on JavaScript. So I don't want to use python and cross-compile to js. Run a local server and use the browser in full screen mode. Sort of okay, but still its the same browser thing. And difficult to distribute. So what is the best option? I'm excited about node.js which is the main reason for looking into JavaScript. Otherwise I would have choose python.

• Where should people give feedback on Ubuntu?

  Many people have opinions or want to give feedback about Ubuntu. If they are simple bugs with a crash or display corruption, that's fine, they can file in Launchpad. But, comments about the design or concept of the system are more problematic. They come up all over the place, such as "Some Unity feedback" in other places that are not really about Unity. Ideally the answer will be a place where the comments will actually be read by the design team will tend to encourage people to read the existing comments and not post the same thing again and again perhaps will tend to bubble up good solutions rather than strange ideas will not be annoying to people who are trying to use that place for something else

• How to use PostgreSQL on AWS - Ubuntu 11.10

  I'm extremely new to cloud-computing, Linux, and PostgreSQL, so if this is a stupid question, I apologize. I've managed to create an m1.large instance running Ubuntu 11.10, connect via Putty SSH, and install PostgreSQL (sudo apt-get install postgresql), but that is as far as I've gotten. My goal is to run several python web-scraping scripts that I've written on this instance (so as not to eat up all of our bandwidth (smaller company at the moment)) and insert the scraped data into a PostgreSQL table on the instance and later retrieve that data to store on our local server (as I've heard AWS EBS is unreliable and I don't want to take chances). How can I configure PostgreSQL on my AWS instance? How can I access the data from my machine? I currently use PgAdmin3 to manage PosgreSQL on our local server. Can I use this same interface to manage PostgreSQL on my AWS instance? Any suggestions, solutions, links, etc is greatly appreciated. And again, if this is a dumb question, I apologize.
