Is there any existing (old) game that released graphic as free or open source?

I'd like to (re)create an online version (html5/JS) of some old game, for example something like HoM&M 2.

Maybe, some of old games were released as free or open source (I'm interested in the graphical assets only)? I heard something about Red Alert been released as free, but I'm not sure if it's permitted to reuse graphical assets in such manner. Do You know such games?

Another question - can You please share Your thoughts, rough estimate - how much it will cost to pay an artist to create graphics similar to HoM&M 2?
