Firefox really slows down my computer

I love Firefox; it has a special place in my heart. However, using the default Firefox in Ubuntu eventually causes my computer to freeze and crash. Nothing more to the problem, just the performance of Firefox really sucks, therefor causing a system-wide freeze. How do I know this? I use Google Chrome mostly, and other programs. None of them ever made my computer freeze.

Is it an Update problem? If so, can I install a different version of Firefox from Mozilla.com? What's the deal here?
