  • The Oracle VM Hall of Fame

    - by Kristin Rose
“Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the crowd. Buy me a new Oracle VM, I want my competition to be history!”...Yes, baseball is in full swing, and as we make our way to the closing of the quarter, Oracle is ready to “knock it out of the park” with its newly updated release of Oracle VM 3.1. This home run of a server virtualization solution will let you deploy software faster, as it intelligently manages your entire infrastructure, from application to disk. As if that wasn’t enough, the competition can’t even get on base! Have a look at the final score below: Partners will be hitting grand slams left and right because management tools, application templates and single source support, have all teamed up to create one heck of a curve ball for the competition, but more importantly, an absolute first draft pick for our partners. With no license cost and an affordable enterprise support cost, crowds have gathered to see this ‘All Star’ play some hard ball. Watch as Jeff Doolan, Sr. Director of Linux and Virtualization Channel Sales at Oracle, goes into more depth on how Oracle VM is a real game changer and eliminates the competition.Adding to the line-up are two key components of Oracle VM 3.1: Enhanced Ease-of-use: The new GUI design is engineered for faster execution of workflow and to maximize ease of use and reduce deployment time. Administrators have more time to spend at the ball park or focus on the business.New Oracle VM Templates: such as the Oracle E-Business Suite 12.1.3; Oracle PeopleSoft FSCM 9.1; Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c; Oracle Linux 5.8; Oracle Linux 6.1; Oracle Solaris 11 – which add to the existing 100+ existing templates that are ready for download. Oracle VM Templates are pre-configured as an entire stack including OS and application fully tested, production ready and certified from Oracle. For more information on Oracle newest player, Oracle VM 3.1, read this press release or visit our technology information page. • Increase efficiency for an R simulator of the Monty Hall Puzzle

    - by jahan_m
The Monty Hall Problem is a simple puzzle involving probability that even stumps professionals in careers dealing with some heavy-duty math. Here's the basic problem: Suppose you're on a game show, and you're given the choice of three doors: Behind one door is a car; behind the others, goats. You pick a door, say No. 1, and the host, who knows what's behind the doors, opens another door, say No. 3, which has a goat. He then says to you, "Do you want to pick door No. 2?" Is it to your advantage to switch your choice? You can find numerous explanations of the solution here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_Hall_problem Goal of my simulation: Prove that a switching strategy will win you the car 2/3 of the time. I got curious and wanted to write a little function that simulates the problem many times and returns the proportion of wins if you switched and the proportion of wins if you stayed with your first choice. The function then plots the cumulative wins. First and foremost, I'm interested in hearing if my simulation is indeed replicating the Monty Problem, or if some aspect of the code got it wrong. Secondly, this function takes a long time to run once I get to about 10,000 simulations. I know I don't need this many simulations to prove this but I'd love to hear some ideas on how to make it more efficient. Thanks for your feedback! Monty_Hall=function(repetitions){ doors=c('A','B','C') stay_wins=0 switch_wins=0 series=data.frame(sim_num=seq(repetitions),cum_sum_stay=replicate(repetitions,0),cum_sum_switch=replicate(repetitions,0)) for(i in seq(repetitions)){ winning_door=sample(doors,1) contestant_chooses=sample(doors,1) if(contestant_chooses==winning_door) stay_wins=stay_wins+1 else switch_wins=switch_wins+1 series[i,'cum_sum_stay']=stay_wins series[i,'cum_sum_switch']=switch_wins } plot(series$sim_num,series$cum_sum_switch,col=2,ylab='Cumulative # of wins', xlab='Simulation #',main=sprintf('%d Simulations of the Monty Hall Paradox',repetitions),type='l') lines(series$sim_num,series$cum_sum_stay,col=4) legend('topleft',legend=c('Cumulative wins from switching', 'Cumulative wins from staying'),col=c(2,4),lty=1) result=list(series=series,stay_wins=stay_wins,switch_wins=switch_wins, proportion_stay_wins=stay_wins/repetitions, proportion_switch_wins=switch_wins/repetitions) return(result) } #Theory predicts that it is to the contestant's advantage if he #switches his choice to the other door. This function simulates the game #many times, and shows you the proportion of games in which staying or #switching would win the car. It also plots the cumulative wins for each strategy. • Where did my free space go?

    - by Ari B. Friedman
    I have a storage drive (2TB) and an OS drive (90GB SSD). I've run out of space on the OS drive: /$ df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sdb1 72G 72G 0 100% / udev 5.9G 12K 5.9G 1% /dev tmpfs 2.4G 1.2M 2.4G 1% /run none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock none 5.9G 428K 5.9G 1% /run/shm /dev/sda1 1.9T 639G 1.2T 37% /media/StorageDrive So be it. But when I attempt to figure out where the space has gone, I cannot find it anything remotely approaching the capacity of the drive: /$ sudo du -h -d 1 du: cannot access `./media/StorageDrive/home/ari/.gvfs': Permission denied 675G ./media 2.3G ./var 0 ./proc 7.0M ./tmp 27M ./boot 4.0K ./lib64 12K ./dev 44M ./home 16K ./lost+found 8.0M ./sbin 223M ./lib 4.0K ./selinux 1.4M ./run 140K ./root 8.8M ./bin 4.0K ./mnt 38M ./etc 8.0K ./srv 4.8G ./usr 65M ./opt 0 ./sys 682G . Note the difference between the total (682G) and the mounted drives in /media (675G) is only about 9G. How are 72G being used? Where is this dark matter hiding?

  • 50 Years of LEDs: An Interview with Inventor Nick Holonyak [Video]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
The man who powered on the first LED half a century ago is still around to talk about it; read on to watch an interview with LED inventor Nick Holonyak. The most fascinating thing about Holonyak’s journey to the invention of the LED was that he started off trying to build a laser and ended up inventing a super efficient light source: Holonyak got his PhD in 1954. In 1957, after a year at Bell Labs and a two year stint in the Army, he joined GE’s research lab in Syracuse, New York. GE was already exploring semiconductor applications and building the forerunners of modern diodes called thyristors and rectifiers. At a GE lab in Schenectady, the scientist Robert Hall was trying to build the first diode laser. Hall, Holonyak and others noticed that semiconductors emit radiation, including visible light, when electricity flows through them. Holonyak and Hall were trying to “turn them on,” and channel, focus and multiply the light. Hall was the first to succeed. He built the world’s first semiconductor laser. Without it, there would be no CD and DVD players today. “Nobody knew how to turn the semiconductor into the laser,” Holonyak says. “We arrived at the answer before anyone else.” But Hall’s laser emitted only invisible, infrared light. Holonyak spent more time in his lab, testing, cutting and polishing his hand-made semiconducting alloys. In the fall of 1962, he got first light. “People thought that alloys were rough and turgid and lumpy,” he says. “We knew damn well what happened and that we had a very powerful way of converting electrical current directly into light. We had the ultimate lamp.” How To Get a Better Wireless Signal and Reduce Wireless Network Interference How To Troubleshoot Internet Connection Problems 7 Ways To Free Up Hard Disk Space On Windows

I ame unsure how to create the function for the automation of Registration system for a College registration system. Here is what i want to do. I want to automate the registrations system so that it automaticly registers students. Then I want a procedure to automate the grading system. I have included the code that i am written to make most of this assignment work which it does but unsure how to incorporate Pl\SQL automated fuctions for the registrations system, and the grading system. • How to implement a genetic algorithm with distance, time, and cost

    - by ari
I want to make a solution to find the optimum route of school visit. For example, I want to visit 5 schools (A, B, C, D, E) in my city. Then I must find out what school I should visit first, then the second, then the third etc. with distance, time, and cost criteria. The problem is, I am confused about how to use distance with time and cost (fuel usage) estimation in genetic algorithm to find the optimum route?

  • What is the actual difference between Computer Programmers and Software Engineers? Is this description accurate?

    - by Ari
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this is the difference: Computer programmers write programs. After computer software engineers and systems analysts design software programs, the programmer converts that design into a logical series of instructions that the computer can follow They predict employment to increase for software engineers by 34% but to decline for programmers. Is there actually any such real distinction between the 2 jobs? How can one get a job designing programs (to be implemented by others)?

  • I want to install and get to building a personal MySQL DB

    - by Ari Hall
So how do I go from installing MySQL from the Software Center to inputing data into fields and bringing in a comma delimited file? I've only had brief experience with MSAccess and OOo Base a long time ago, so details are appreciated, I just want to get up and running. I have Ubuntu 10.10, 64 bit, if that affects much. If you can link me to a howto that does exactly what I'm looking for, that would work. Again, Thanks!

  • Root Domain Redirects Incorrectly To Https instead of to WWW

    - by Ari
TL;DR - Why do visits to my website homepage work without "www", but not to specific pages on it? I recently moved my website (Zappable.com) to a new webhost, RedHat's OpenShift (a PAAS). It requires using Cname records to setup custom domains, something my domain name registar (1&1) does not support without a hosting plan. So instead I setup Cloudflare in-between my domain and web host, and setup a Cname record on it. I then pointed a 1&1 "www" sub-domain to CloudFlare, and then pointed my 1&1 root to "www" sub-domain. This works fine for visiting to my homepage, but for some reason it does not work when visiting a specific page without "www". Instead of adding "www", it goes to HTTPS, which is strange.

  • Where can I find video and audio drivers for my netbook?

    - by Ari
I got a little netbook yesterday (an Acer Aspire One) for schoolwork and read in numerous reviews Ubuntu was a must. I dove into it blindly and downloaded 12.04 LTS and though I admit it's faster than before, I have no idea how it works yet and was stupid enough to get rid of the Windows 7 Starter that was on there before completely. I can see myself getting used to the rest of Ubuntu, but the main issue is that it seems to have eaten all of my drivers and I don't know where to get any Ubuntu compatible ones. Any video at all is jilty and kind of creepy and any audio is very distorted and REALLY creepy. I understand that this is a tiny $150 typing and light web use school device I'm talking about, but I feel really stupid making the poor thing worse than it was before and not knowing what to do about it. Does anyone know how to install graphics/sound drivers? Or, alternatively, does anyone know where I can get a copy of Windows 7 Starter. I can see myself liking this if the problems are fixable, but if not I still have the product key and would be able to tackle the problem by myself with that.

  • restoring grub when Windows 7 MBR lost it

    - by Trent Hall
My dual boot desktop was running only Windows 7 until it crashed on a windows update. Couldn't get it started again even after all the usual things that might fix it, so I installed Ubuntu 12.04, which has worked very well. unfortunately Carbonite doesn't run on Linux yet, and so I called Microsoft support to see if we could be Windows 7 up and running. Their attempts to get Windows 7 running resulted in writing a new MBR for windows, which failed and also somehow caused the loss of ability to boot into Ubuntu also. How can I get back to Ubuntu? I don't want to lose my settings in Ubuntu. Thanks... Trent

  • What are approaches for analyzing the cost-benefits of a development methodology?

    - by Garrett Hall
There are many development practices (TDD, continuous integration, cowboy-coding), principles (SOLID, layers of abstraction, KISS), and processes (RUP, Scrum, XP, Waterfall). I have learned you can't follow any of these blindly, but have to consider context and ROI (return on investment). My question is: How do you know whether you are getting a good ROI by following a particular methodology? Metrics, guesstimation, experience? Do analytical methods exist? Or is this just the million-dollar question in software engineering that has no answer?

  • SQLAuthority News – #SQLPASS 2012 Schedule – Where can You Find Me

    - by pinaldave
Yesterday I wrote about my memory lane with SQLPASS. It has been a fantastic experience and I am very confident that this year the same excellent experience is going to be repeated. Before I start for #SQLPASS every year, I plan where I want to be and what I will be doing. As I travel from India to attend this event (22+ hours flying time and door to door travel time around 36 hours), it is very crucial that I plan things in advance. This year here is my quick note where I will be during the SQLPASS event. If you can stop with me, I would like to meet you, shake your hand and will archive memories as a photograph. Tuesday, November 6, 2012 6:30pm-8:00pm PASS Summit 2012 Welcome Reception Wednesday, November 7, 2012 12pm-1pm – Book Signing at Exhibit Hall Joes Pros booth#117 (FREE BOOK) 5:30pm-6:30pm – Idera Reception at Fox Sports Grill 7pm-8pm - Embarcadero Booth Book Signing (FREE BOOK) 8pm onwards – Exhibitor Reception Thursday, November 8, 2012 12pm-1pm - Embarcadero Booth Book Signing (FREE BOOK) 7pm-10pm - Community Appreciation Party Friday, November 9, 2012 12pm-1pm - Joes 2 Pros Book Signing at Exhibit Hall Joes Pros booth#117 11:30pm-1pm - Birds of a Feather Luncheon Rest of the Time! • Open source tomcat log viewer

    - by Ari
I'm managing several tomcat instances (aprox 30-35) and looking for some console to centralize the logs. I tried php-syslog-ng before (no with tomcat), and found it useful. I would like that these software would have some of these features: -Syntax highlight according to the severity of the exceptions. -Tree view for stack traces and nested exceptions. Bonus point: -Alarm when certain pattern is matched.

  • How to Setup Java Application

    - by Ari
I have a 'desktop' java application which is in the form of a jar file. How can I: Store this application on a single server. Grant access via Terminal Services to a specific OU to run this application from the central location. Disallow the copying or moving of the application (jar file) to any other location. Allow the saving/copying/moving of the output of the application on an authorized user's local drive. Thanks.

  • Can you configure multiple KMS hosts in a primary / secondary relationship?

    - by Mark Hall
We have two datacenters in our environment: primary and DR. I need to deploy a KMS service, and to be proactive, I would like to have a host in both datacenters. From what I have read, you can have up to 6 hosts without calling Microsoft, and it appears that what will happen is that a SRV record for each host will be placed in DNS. The client will query for those SRV records and randomly choose a host for the initial activation and will use that same server for all renewals. The server can be changed manually through a script and will automatically change if the initial server is unavailable when activating or renewing. My question is has anyone found a way to designate one server as the primary KMS host and designate the other as failover only? The reason I ask is that it is preferred that the client communicate with the primary datacenter during normal operations and only talk to the DR datacenter when needed because the bandwidth between the offices and the DR datacenter is limited compared to the primary. I am sure that this has been done before but I can not find it MSFT's documentation. Thanks, Mark

  • Debian + ProFTPD + LDAP Incorrect Password Issue

    - by Tristan Hall
I have the LDAP configuration configured for ProFTPD and I have modified the modules.conf file to include the LDAP module. However, every time I login with FileZilla I get 530 Login Incorrect. It does this for all users except those whose passwords are defined locally as well as in LDAP. The exact same setup works fine on my CentOS server and I've already tried re-installing it after purging the configuration files.
