  • Why is Automator crashing on launch?

    I've run into an odd problem where Automtor.app on Snow Leopard crashes on launch. At some point in the past, I put a copy of iPhoto.app into my public directory to copy over to another machine. Now, Automator.app won't run unless my public directory has a copy of iPhoto.app in it. If I remove it, Automator.app crashes on launch.     In Leopard, on Finder - desktop, right click pop up menu has an option for automator scripts. In Snow Leopard - they have removed this option. More over, I would like to learn some automator scripts. What are the great resources for learning about automator & it's script ?   • Using Automator to click on an Application-specific button

    I'm new to Automator. I need to launch a specific application and to click on one of its buttons. I've used the "Watch Me Do" feature to register the button click but, in the Automator events log, this action is being reported as "Bring the window XXX to the front." I'm then wondering if a better way exists to "record" a button-click. The reason behind my question is linked to this: http://superuser.com/questions/148386/mac-running-an-automator-task-at-night In fact, using the "Watch me do" approach, Automator is apparently not able to perform the click action when the machine is on sleep and a password is required.   • Automator apps with different icons that persist upon saving

    Automator allows to save a workflow as an application bundle. It uses an Automator specific icon for doing this. I want to change this icon (using different icons for different workflows). I can do this by going into the application bundle and change the icon with Icon Composer. The disadvantage of this solution is that if I open the application bundle in Automator and save it, it uses the default icon again. Is there a way to change the icon for good?

  • Find running processes created by Mac Automator

    Is there any way to view automator process that are running? About a year ago I created a workflow or something similar in Mac's Automator. When I took screenshots mac would place them on the desktop. I created a small script to take move those screenshots to a different folder. I want to change what folder those are saved in now. Problem is, I can't figure out how to edit my workflow. The biggest problem, I don't know where the workflow/file is stored. The process is always running so anytime I take a screenshot it is moved. Is there any way to view automator process that are running? Also, I know there are other ways to make screenshots appear in different folders. I still want to find this process/script and kill it =) Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The problem is that, after a while, the machine is going to sleep and a password is required (this is the intended behaviour). Unfortunately, Automator seems to be unable to perform the task when the password is required. It works like a charm if the "password required" dialog is not displayed (before the sleep). Any suggestion on how to solve this?

This doesn't exist so I'm wanting to create a simple Automator script to do that. But, I'm running into a few problems.     Hi there I remember in Tiger, you could always select a bunch of files in Finder and right click them, there was an option to open the selection in Automator. However, it seems that option has been lost somewhere between the Leopard and Snow Leopard upgrade. Or am I a bit blind? Can someone please point me in the right direction?

  • Apple Automator "New PDF from Images" maintaining same filename

    I will potentially have 26k of old legacy PICT images to transfer first to PDF for migration. I am using Apple Automator and also the "Dispense Items Incrementally" to loop through it. However, I can't seem to let "New PDF from Images" to remember the original filename. Anyone able to offer some advice :) FYI, I am transforming it to PDF because I can't do it using ImageMagick to convert directly to my ultimate JPEG format. Due to the fact that my PICT was created very long ago and thus has some convert: improper image header error. See this ticket for more information. Thus I am doing a intermediate convert PICT to PDF first, then convert that PDF to JPEG :) The only thing left is the naming of the "Output File Name" which do not allow me to identify original filename.   • OS X Automator empty, blank or null value.

    I have some data files mostly excel, word and pdf files most of the files have no extension on them. So they are missing the .doc .xls. This data needs to be used in a Windows environment now. I have created automator apps for each of the file types I want to add the ext onto. The problem is it also adds the extension to files that already have an extension. So data.xls becomes data.xls.xls I would like to figure a way to only add the extenion to the files without extension. How do I tell the finder filter that i only want it to return files without extensions. I see how to add a line to filter by extension but I don't know how to let it know I want only blank or null or files without any extensions. Thanks

  • Automator won't change finder item names of photoshop automation exports

    I made a folder action that monitors a folder and changes the name of anything put in it. Then I automate a photoshop action that exports images to the folder. for some reason I have to move the images out of the folder and then back in for it to change. is there a way to have it change the images as they're saved there? is this a bug or am i doing something wrong? it works fine if i just move the images in and out of the folder. and sometimes it will change just a couple of them, which makes me think it's just because they're coming in so fast that it glitches.

  • Downloading Images to a specific directory using Automator / Applescript

    Im trying to use a variable in Automator to save images into a specific folder. Strangely when you create a new folder and you use a variable, it allows you to set the base path... but if you try to "Download URL" it does not allow you to select the base path to add the variable onto and it breaks the transaction. Im sure applescript could do a better job, but I can't seem to figure it out. Example. There is a photo gallery called Cats and Dogs. I am able to grab the Cats and Dogs title and make it my variable... it makes a new folder on my desktop called Cats and Dogs (from the Variable)... I am then able to grab all the images in the gallery as a result from "Get Image URL's from webpage"... This works great... then I try to "Download the URLs" and I want to download them to the new "Cats and Dogs" folder I have created. But I can't seem to make that work, because I can't set the path in the Download the URLs box in automator... This ends up being really useful when I have 100 galleries I need to rip to my desktop... Of course I could move the files in the newly created folder by hand once saved... but then I would have to do this for each gallery... Any suggestions?

    Hello all, I'm designing an app that allows users to email me crash reports if my app ever crashes. I'd like to leave Mac Mail running on a computer and when an email comes through, an automator script / AppleScript runs to process the contents of the body of the email. I've got the entire parsing/processing done in a python script, except I have to manually copy the contents of the email into a file and then run my parser on that file. What's the best way to set this up so I can the contents of the email be pushed into my parsing script? Many thanks!

  • Is it possible to run an Automator workflow when a USB device is connected?

    I would like to run an Automator workflow every time I connect a certain thumbdrive to my OS X Snow Leopard system. This workflow will copy certain files from my hard drive onto the thumb drive. I have the workflow part figured out, but I don't know how to trigger it. Ideally, I wouldn't need to do anything; it would run as soon as the drive is mounted. Is this possible? Am I approaching this from the wrong angle? The solution only really needs to work on Snow Leopard. Thanks!

    I have very specific question. I've got 500,000 images that sit in 98 subfolders. Some of the subfolders contain 25,000 images. Is there any script/automator workflow that I can use? I was trying to create a workflow: Ask for Finder Items Get Folder Contents (tick repeat for each subfolder found) Rotate images It works OK, but only for these folders where there is less than 4,096 files: I normally receive following error message: Rotate images failed - 1 error too many arguments (12019) -- limit is 4096 Is there any way to increase this limit or create completely different apple script? I really hope that someone will help me with this one.

  • How do I parse file paths separated by a space in a string?

    Background: I am working in Automator on a wrapper to a command line utility. I need a way to separate an arbitrary number of file paths delimited by a single space from a single string, so that I may remove all but the first file path to pass to the program. Example input string: /Users/bobby/diddy dum/ding.mp4 /Users/jimmy/gone mia/come back jimmy.mp3 ... Desired output: /Users/bobby/diddy dum/ding.mp4 Part of the problem is the inflexibility on the Automator end of things. I'm using an Automator action which returns unescaped POSIX filepaths delimited by a space (or comma). This is unfortunate because: 1. I cannot ensure file/folder names will not contain either a space or comma, and 2. the only inadmissible character in Mac OS X filenames (as far as I can tell) is :. There are options which allow me to enclose the file paths in double or single quotes, or angle brackets. The program itself accepts the argument of the aforementioned input string, so there must be a way of separating the paths. I just do not have a keen enough eye to see how to do it with sed or awk. At first I thought I'll just use sed to replace every [space]/ with [newline]/ and then trim all but the first line, but that leaves the loophole open for folders whose names end with a space. If I use the comma delimiter, the same happens, just for a comma instead. If I encapsulate in double or single quotation marks, I am opening another can of worms for filenames with those characters. The image/link is the relevant part of my Automator workflow. -- UPDATE -- I was able to achieve what I wanted in a rather roundabout way. It's hardly elegant but here is working generalized code: path="/Users/bobby/diddy dum/ding.mp4 /Users/jimmy/gone mia/come back jimmy.mp3" # using colon because it's an inadmissible Mac OS X # filename character, perfect for separating # also, unlike [space], multiple colons do not collapse IFS=: # replace all spaces with colons colpath=$(echo "$path" | sed 's/ /:/g') # place words from colon-ized file path into array # e.g. three spaces -> three colons -> two empty words j=1 for word in $colpath do filearray[$j]="$word" j=$j+1 done # reconstruct file path word by word # after each addition, check file existence # if non-existent, re-add lost [space] and continue until found name="" for seg in "${filearray[@]}" do name="$name$seg" if [[ -f "$name" ]] then echo "$name" break fi name="$name " done All this trouble because the default IFS doesn't count "emptiness" between the spaces as words, but rather collapses them all.

    Is a there a similar program for Vista like the MAC application Automator Specifically I'm looking for a vista app that can control timed clicks,example...in automator, I can specify which pixel and how often to click, or a series of click in different places.I'm not looking for an"intelligent clicker" just a purely GUI programed clicker. ALso i need it do work and record the keyboard. From reading other SU posts i can see that c prompt doesn't have an easy to do this.

  • Automating telnet login and commands on a Mac

    Currently I do something like this: telnet 192.168.0.3 23 username password cd /dir/ programname -s -g dosomething I want to do this with one step, the coolest would be to compile a program for this using Automator, but i have no idea how to do that. "shell script" in Automator fails at telnet 192.168.0.3 23 saying "connection refused" of course: I had no chance to type in password and so on. Any ideas?
