  • Channel 9 Interview: Array and Collection Initializers in Visual Basic 2010 (Beth Massi, Spotty Bowl

Ive written about collection initializers on my blog before, but I thought Id catch up with the VB Team to tell me more about how they really work. In this interview Spotty Bowles, a tester on the VB Compiler team, shows us a couple of new language features: Array and Collection Initializers. He gives us insight into how they are implemented in the compiler and best practices on how to use them in our code. Additionally, he discusses how to extend Collection Initializers with your own extension...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

  • SQL: Speed Improvement - Cluttered union query

    - by vol7ron
    SELECT * FROM ( SELECT a.user_id, a.f_name, a.l_name, b.user_id, b.f_name, b.l_name FROM current_tbl a INNER JOIN import_tbl b ON ( a.user_id = b.user_id ) UNION SELECT a.user_id, a.f_name, a.l_name, b.user_id, b.f_name, b.l_name FROM current_tbl a INNER JOIN import_tbl b ON ( lower(a.f_name)=lower(b.f_name) AND lower(a.l_name)=lower(b.l_name) ) ) foo -- UNION -- SELECT a.user_id , a.f_name , a.l_name , '' , '' , '' FROM current_tbl a WHERE a.user_id NOT IN ( select user_id from( SELECT a.user_id, a.f_name, a.l_name, b.user_id, b.f_name, b.l_name FROM current_tbl a INNER JOIN import_tbl b ON ( a.user_id = b.user_id ) UNION SELECT a.user_id, a.f_name, a.l_name, b.user_id, b.f_name, b.l_name FROM current_tbl a INNER JOIN import_tbl b ON ( lower(a.f_name)=lower(b.f_name) AND lower(a.l_name)=lower(b.l_name) ) ) bar ) ORDER BY user_id Example of table population: current_tbl: ------------------------------- user_id | f_name | l_name ---------+----------+---------- A1 | Adam | Acorn A2 | Beth | Berry A3 | Calv | Chard | | import_tbl: ------------------------------- user_id | f_name | l_name ---------+----------+---------- A1 | Adam | Acorn A2 | Beth | Butcher <- last_name different | | Expected Output: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- user_id1 | f_name1 | l_name1 | user_id2 | f_name2 | l_name2 ----------+-----------+-----------+------------+-----------+----------- A1 | Adam | Acorn | A1 | Adam | Acorn A2 | Beth | Berry | A2 | Beth | Butcher A3 | Calv | Chard | | | Doing this method gets rid of conditions where the row would be: A2 | Beth | Berry | A2 | Beth | Butcher But it keeps the A3 row I hope this makes sense and I haven't overly simplified it. This is a continuation question from my other question. The succession of these improvements has dropped the query down from ~32000ms to where it's at now ~1200ms - quite an improvement. I supect I can optimize by using UNION ALL in the subquery and of course the usual index optimizations, but I'm looking for the best SQL optimization. FYI this particular case is for PostgreSQL.

  • Whew.... what a week!

    - by [email protected]
Last week was a busy week for the UPK and Tutor teams at Oracle. It started with the the Collaborate Conference in Las Vegas and ended with our first UPK and Tutor Customer Advisory Board (CAB) meeting at Oracle HQ. The Collaborate Conference is a yearly event sponsored by three of the largest Oracle User Groups. • Oracle Applications User Group (OAUG) • Independent Oracle User Group (IOUG) • Quest - International User Group The User Groups are completely user run organizations with Oracle participation. If you've never attended a conference, time to start planning for the 2011 event in Orlando! If that's out of your reach, there are many regional and industry user groups that meet on a regular basis. They offer a great way to get involved, network with other users, and increase your knowledge around the Oracle applications. For a list of groups near you, check out the Oracle User Group Center. I'll add that the biggest meeting of Oracle users is at the Oracle Open World Conference in San Francisco in September, where we will have many UPK & Tutor focused development and customer sessions. More information on Oracle Open World will be forthcoming over the next few months. We hope to see many of you there! The CAB was a first for the UPK and Tutor team. Although we speak with customers regularly, this gave us an opportunity to meet in a more formal setting to discuss industry trends, business issues, and the direction of the products. Members serve a 2 year term and are required to attend 2 meetings per year, one in person, one via phone. We have some tweaking to do to our meeting format (most members wanted it to be longer!), but the overwhelming consensus was that it was a great success. There were many experiences and ideas shared and the wheels of the UPK and Tutor Development teams have been turning ever since. I'm sure you will see some of these discussions result in new product features over time. What a great week!

  • UPK & Tutor Customer Roundtable Discussions

    - by [email protected]
UPK & Tutor Developers are a creative bunch and we hear from lots of customers using our tools in a variety of ways that bring value to their organizations. A large retail organization uses UPK to teach cash handling skills at each of their stores, a national packaging company uses it for their phone system training. A university's technical team uses UPK to capture customizations that are being made to their HCM and FIN applications, building a library of topics purely for the technical team around how customizations were done including who requested them and why. When it comes time to upgrade, it's easy for them to determine if a customization needs to be carried forward and if so, they know exactly how it was done previously. Almost every customer has a story, and we've captured some of them via our quarterly UPK & Tutor Customer Roundtable iSeminar series and we continue to add more. Click this link to hear how customers like you are using UPK & Tutor in their organizations. Who knows, you may pick up some new tricks to wow your colleagues and management!

  • Copied a file with winscp; only winscp can see it

    - by nilbus
I recently copied a 25.5GB file from another machine using WinSCP. I copied it to C:\beth.tar.gz, and WinSCP can still see the file. However no other app (including Explorer) can see the file. What might cause this, and how can I fix it? The details that might or might not matter WinSCP shows the size of the file (C:\beth.tar.gz) correctly as 27,460,124,080 bytes, which matches the filesize on the remote host Neither explorer, cmd (command line prompt w/ dir C:\), the 7Zip archive program, nor any other File Open dialog can see the beth.tar.gz file under C:\ I have configured Explorer to show hidden files I can move the file to other directories using WinSCP If I try to move the file to Users/, UAC prompts me for administrative rights, which I grant, and I get this error: Could not find this item The item is no longer located in C:\ When I try to transfer the file back to the remote host in a new directory, the transfer starts successfully and transfers data The transfer had about 30 minutes remaining when I left it for the night The morning after the file transfer, I was greeted with a message saying that the connection to the server had been lost. I don't think this is relevant, since I did not tell it to disconnect after the file was done transferring, and it likely disconnected after the file transfer finished. I'm using an old version of WinSCP - v4.1.8 from 2008 I can view the file properties in WinSCP: Type of file: 7zip (.gz) Location: C:\ Attributes: none (Ready-only, Hidden, Archive, or Ready for indexing) Security: SYSTEM, my user, and Administrators group have full permissions - everything other than "special permissions" is checked under Allow for all 3 users/groups (my user, Administrators, SYSTEM) What's going on?!

  • ctrl-c, ctrl-v not working on Windows 7

    - by Beth
I'm trying to use my Windows 7 PC, and for some reason, Ctrl-C to copy and Ctrl-V to paste only work intermittently. I have a third-party clipboard viewer installed, so I can see when Ctrl-C doesn't copy to the clipboard (there's no new entry) and also when Ctrl-V pastes glarp (the cursor moves, sometimes several lines) instead of what's on the clipboard. I've checked the keyboard and mouse drivers, run a system scan, checked the event log and a bunch of other things I've seen online, and haven't found a resolution. Any other ideas for things to check or try?

  • Programming habits, patterns, and standards that have developed out of appeal to tradition/by mistake? [closed]

    - by user828584
Being self-taught, the vast majority of what I know about programming has come from reading other peoples' code on websites like this. I'm starting to wonder if I've developed bad or otherwise pointless habits from other people, or even just made invalid assumptions. For example, in javascript, void 0 is used in a lot of places, and until I saw this, I just assumed it was necessary and that 0 had some significance. Also, the http header, referer is misspelled but hasn't been changed because it would break a lot of applications. Also mentioned in Code Complete 2: The architecture should describe the motivations for all major decisions. Be wary of “we’ve always done it that way” justifications. One story goes that Beth wanted to cook a pot roast according to an award-winning pot roast recipe handed down in her husband’s family. Her husband, Abdul, said that his mother had taught him to sprinkle it with salt and pepper, cut both ends off, put it in the pan, cover it, and cook it. Beth asked, “Why do you cut both ends off?” Abdul said, “I don’t know. I’ve always done it that way. Let me ask my mother.” He called her, and she said, “I don’t know. I’ve always done it that way. Let me ask your grandmother.” She called his grandmother, who said, “I don’t know why you do it that way. I did it that way because it was too big to fit in my pan.” What are some other examples of this?

  • Why would delaying a thread response fix view corruption?

    - by Beth S
6 times out of 10 my very simple iPhone app is getting a corrupted display on launch or crashes randomly. But it behaves fine in the simulator. The display corruption looks like mis-colored fonts, out of place font text, wrong background colors, etc. I've found a strange work-around.. when my thread delays by 2 seconds before calling the "done" notification, everything works swimmingly. The thread reads a web page and the "done" notification loads up a PickerView with strings. So what gives? Can I not safely initiate a threaded task from viewDidLoad? - (void) loadWebPage:(NSString *)urlAddition { NSAutoreleasePool *subPool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; NSString *pageSource; NSError *err; NSString *urlString = [NSString stringWithString:@"http://server/%@", urlAddition]; pageSource = [NSString stringWithContentsOfURL:[NSURL URLWithString: urlString] encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding error:&err]; [NSThread sleepForTimeInterval:2.0]; // THIS STOPS THE DISPLAY CORRUPTION [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] postNotificationName:@"webDoneNotification" object:nil]; [subPool drain]; } - (void) webDoneNotification: (NSNotification *)pNotification { [mediaArray release]; mediaArray = [[NSArray arrayWithObjects: [NSString stringWithString:@"new pickerview text"], nil] retain]; [mediaPickerView reloadAllComponents]; [mediaPickerView selectRow:0 inComponent:0 animated:NO]; } - (id)initWithNibName:(NSString *)nibNameOrNil bundle:(NSBundle *)nibBundleOrNil { mediaArray = [[NSArray arrayWithObjects: [NSString stringWithString:@"init pickerview text"], nil] retain]; if (self = [super initWithNibName:nibNameOrNil bundle:nibBundleOrNil]) { // Custom initialization } return self; } - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; myWebThread = [[WebThread alloc] initWithDelegate:self]; [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:@selector(webDoneNotification:) name:@"webDoneNotification" object:nil]; [myWebThread performSelectorInBackground:@selector(loadWebPage:) withObject:@""]; } Thanks! Update: Even a delay of 0.1 seconds is enough to completely fix the problem.

  • How can I connect to a mail server using SMTP over SSL using Python?

    - by jakecar
Hello, So I have been having a hard time sending email from my school's email address. It is SSL and I could only find this code online by Matt Butcher that works with SSL: import smtplib, socket version = "1.00" all = ['SMTPSSLException', 'SMTP_SSL'] SSMTP_PORT = 465 class SMTPSSLException(smtplib.SMTPException): """Base class for exceptions resulting from SSL negotiation.""" class SMTP_SSL (smtplib.SMTP): """This class provides SSL access to an SMTP server. SMTP over SSL typical listens on port 465. Unlike StartTLS, SMTP over SSL makes an SSL connection before doing a helo/ehlo. All transactions, then, are done over an encrypted channel. This class is a simple subclass of the smtplib.SMTP class that comes with Python. It overrides the connect() method to use an SSL socket, and it overrides the starttles() function to throw an error (you can't do starttls within an SSL session). """ certfile = None keyfile = None def __init__(self, host='', port=0, local_hostname=None, keyfile=None, certfile=None): """Initialize a new SSL SMTP object. If specified, `host' is the name of the remote host to which this object will connect. If specified, `port' specifies the port (on `host') to which this object will connect. `local_hostname' is the name of the localhost. By default, the value of socket.getfqdn() is used. An SMTPConnectError is raised if the SMTP host does not respond correctly. An SMTPSSLError is raised if SSL negotiation fails. Warning: This object uses socket.ssl(), which does not do client-side verification of the server's cert. """ self.certfile = certfile self.keyfile = keyfile smtplib.SMTP.__init__(self, host, port, local_hostname) def connect(self, host='localhost', port=0): """Connect to an SMTP server using SSL. `host' is localhost by default. Port will be set to 465 (the default SSL SMTP port) if no port is specified. If the host name ends with a colon (`:') followed by a number, that suffix will be stripped off and the number interpreted as the port number to use. This will override the `port' parameter. Note: This method is automatically invoked by __init__, if a host is specified during instantiation. """ # MB: Most of this (Except for the socket connection code) is from # the SMTP.connect() method. I changed only the bare minimum for the # sake of compatibility. if not port and (host.find(':') == host.rfind(':')): i = host.rfind(':') if i >= 0: host, port = host[:i], host[i+1:] try: port = int(port) except ValueError: raise socket.error, "nonnumeric port" if not port: port = SSMTP_PORT if self.debuglevel > 0: print>>stderr, 'connect:', (host, port) msg = "getaddrinfo returns an empty list" self.sock = None for res in socket.getaddrinfo(host, port, 0, socket.SOCK_STREAM): af, socktype, proto, canonname, sa = res try: self.sock = socket.socket(af, socktype, proto) if self.debuglevel > 0: print>>stderr, 'connect:', (host, port) self.sock.connect(sa) # MB: Make the SSL connection. sslobj = socket.ssl(self.sock, self.keyfile, self.certfile) except socket.error, msg: if self.debuglevel > 0: print>>stderr, 'connect fail:', (host, port) if self.sock: self.sock.close() self.sock = None continue break if not self.sock: raise socket.error, msg # MB: Now set up fake socket and fake file classes. # Thanks to the design of smtplib, this is all we need to do # to get SSL working with all other methods. self.sock = smtplib.SSLFakeSocket(self.sock, sslobj) self.file = smtplib.SSLFakeFile(sslobj); (code, msg) = self.getreply() if self.debuglevel > 0: print>>stderr, "connect:", msg return (code, msg) def setkeyfile(self, keyfile): """Set the absolute path to a file containing a private key.
