• Boinc permissions problem on OS X

  I installed boinc 6.10.21 on my OS X 10.5 in order to upgrade from a 6.6 version that I was running today, and I am the admin user, and I was logged in as the admin user. As I was installing 6.10.21 I was asked if non admin users should be allowed to use Boinc, and I said 'yes' to this. Then when I tried to open Boinc I got a message like the following: "You currently are not authorized to manage the client. Either re-install and allow non-admin users or contact your administrator to add you to the 'boinc_master' user group." So I tried to reinstall first, and I was not asked if non admin users should be allowed to use Boinc.. so I retried a few times and got no different result.. So I downloaded 6.10.43 and installed that, and again I was not asked if non admin users should be allowed to use boinc.. and when I tried to run Boinc I got the same message like: "You currently are not authorized to manage the client. Either re-install and allow non-admin users or contact your administrator to add you to the 'boinc_master' user group." So I did a Google search trying to figure out how to add my admin user to the bonic_master user group and found this which suggested I run the following in terminal: "sudo dscl . -append /Groups/boinc_master GroupMembership <your user's short name> CR" So I did this and now I get the following error: BOINC ownership or permissions are not set properly; please reinstall BOINC (Error code -1200) So I reinstall and I am ever asked the question about allowing non admin users again, and I still get this error message every after every reinstall attempt.. What should I do?..

• Multiple problems using BOINC in Ubuntu 12.04

  I installed Berkeley's BOINC software in Windows and I loved it, however I'm having the following problems using it in Ubuntu 12.04: 1) The software doesn't appear in the systray, only in the Unity dock (left side) 2) I can minimize BOINC to the dock but when I open and close other program it maximizes again, wich is very annoying 3) The software can't be closed, it only minimizes to the Unity dock, and nothing happens using right click and close either 4) The software doesn't start at startup or as a startup application 5) It doesn't have a screensaver like in Windows I know it's a lot a problems, but I hope they can be fixed, because I love to use this software, and knowing it's open-software it would be a shame it didn't run on Ubuntu like it should.

• BOINC permissions issue running as non-admin on Windows PC

  I installed BOINC (running World Community Grid) on a PC (running Vista) under an administrator's account. When logged in as a standard user, and BOINC is set to run as a screensaver, it fails to connect and run properly. Only when the program is run as an administrator, does it actually run in the standard user's account. What is the correct way to install and run BOINC for standard users (non-admin) on Windows? -- Not specific to Vista necessarily.

  i use to have when i have the computer turn on and was idle having more than 2 tasks running at same time.. but now this is not happens and it is enable at maximum of 2 tasks at same time, i don know why. also i was able 2 do that on ubuntu 11.10 not sure if is the same using boinc on ubuntu 11.10. so why this happens? and how can i set up boinc 2 run more than just 2 tasks at same time in ubuntu 12.04 beta?

• How to backup BOINC

  I have BOINC Manager installed from the PPA, version 6.10.17, and I am about to upgrade my Ununtu install with a clean install. I would like to know how I can backup my work done on BOINC so I don't loose what I have already done and have to start from scratch again. For example I am running the Climate Prediction project and it runs for a year or so, I'm at 30% work done so I want to backup that 30% work done. Also as an addition to this, can someone advise me the best way to upgrade BOINC when new versions are released on their website but are not available on the PPA yet. I know you can install BOINC anywhere, but I want to install it to the same place the PPA install does so all my settings and work done is recognised. Thanks in advance.

  What would a system like BOINC look like if it were written today? At the time BOINC was written, databases were the primary choice for maintaining a shared state and concurrency among nodes. Since then, many approaches have been developed for tasking with optimistic concurrency (OT, partial synchronization primitives, shared iterators etc.) Is there an optimal paradigm for optimistically distributing units of work on sparsely distributing systems which communicate through message passing? Sorry if this is a bit vague. P.S. The concept of Tuple-spaces is great, but locking is inherent to its definition. Edit: I already have a federation system which works very well. I have a reactive OT system is implemented on top of it. I'm looking to extend it to get clients to do units of work.

• add script on boot linux machine

  I have one script to start a service on my ubuntu. I added it on boot machine using "# update-rc.d projeto defaults". But it still doesn't start with the boot machine. I think is because I am using other user to start the script "su - www-data -c ...". But I am not sure, because I run the update-rc.d command as root. When I execute the script from a terminal, it asks the password of the user www-data. Does anyone know what is happening? Thanks a lot! • No OpenCL devices (13.10 Core I5 4430 Intel Graphics HD)

  I've been looking quite a lot for this but couldn't find anything that worked. I have an Intel Core I5-4430 based system with no extra graphics adapter (so it's using the on-board, integrated Intel Graphics HD that is part of the CPU), running Ubuntu 13.10. When running BOINC World Community Grid it says "No usable GPUs". When running a bitcoin mining program it says "No OpenCL devices". I searched the web, found two possible solutions - one was to use the Intel OpenCL driver for Xeon platforms, the other was to use the AMD driver. Tried both. I failed installing the Intel driver as there were too many prerequisites that I just didn't manage to install, and the AMD installation was quite fast to its size (it's 200MB, and took far less than a minute to install), but it didn't solve the problem. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong direction here, I'm not sure, but is there anyway I can utilize the advance features of my CPU for those distributed computation programs?

• What happens to modern-ui apps when they aren't in the foreground?

  If I start a modern-ui app and then switch to a different app or a normal program running on the desktop, what happens to the first app? I've heard something about the first app being suspended, but realized that I don't really know that for certain. I mean, could you write a SETI@Home (BOINC) app if you wanted to, or will apps that aren't in the foreground always be suspended? Can you change that? I could see changing that based on available resources, running from AC vs. battery, etc. This morning I heard about an iPad being recovered thanks to the "Find my iPad" app, and was wondering whether you could write such a thing as a modern-ui app and have it work without being the running foreground app. (I'm aware that you'd just write a Windows service or similar, that's not what I'm asking about.)

• Distributing processing for an application that wasn't designed with that in mind

  We've got the application at work that just sits and does a whole bunch of iterative processing on some data files to perform some simulations. This is done by an "old" Win32 application that isn't multi-processor aware, so new(ish) computers and workstations are mostly sitting idle running this application. However, since it's installed by a typical Windows Install Shield installer, I can't seem to install and run multiple copies of the application. The work can be split up manually before processing, enabling the work to be distributed across multiple machines, but we still can't take advantage of multiple core CPUs. The results can be joined back together after processing to make a complete simulation. Is there a product out there that would let me "compartmentalize" an installation (or 4) so I can take advantage of a multi-core CPU? I had thought of using MS Softgrid, but I believe that still depends on a remote server to do the heavy lifting (though please correct me if I'm wrong). Furthermore, is there a way I can distribute the workload off the one machine? So an input could be split into 50 chunks, handed out to 50 machines, and worked on? All without really changing the initial application? In a perfect world, I'd get the application to take advantage of a DesktopGrid (BOINC), but like most "mission critical corporate applications", the need is there, but the money is not.
