• 12.04 No Sound - ALC888 / Radeon 3200HD

  Evening all. I have a MSI U230 netbook, MV40 processor, 4Gb RAM with integrated ATI Radeon 3200HD grahics & an ALC888 codec integrated soundcard. It has HDMI out as well. I've tried a few distro's and have been around linux for a short time. I reckon I've settled on Ubuntu 12.04 (32bit) due to it doing pretty much everything I want it to. I'm working with a fresh install right now. I recently re-installed when I was going in circles trying to solve my problem before. I install Ubuntu and it works, except for the sound. I have tried things like reinstalling Alsa, editing my asound.conf file, installing HDA Verb and a few other things. Its at the point where I need to ask for help... • Apache denying requests with VirtualHosts

  This is the error I get in my log: Permission denied: /home/ross/.htaccess pcfg_openfile: unable to check htaccess file, ensure it is readable My VirtualHost is pretty simple: <VirtualHost 127.0.0.1> ServerName jotter.localhost DocumentRoot /home/ross/www/jotter/public DirectoryIndex index.php index.html <Directory /home/ross/www/jotter/public> AllowOverride all Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> CustomLog /home/ross/www/jotter/logs/access.log combined ErrorLog /home/ross/www/jotter/logs/error.log LogLevel warn </VirtualHost> Any ideas why this is happening? I can't see why Apache is looking for a .htaccess there and don't know why this should stop the request. Thanks.

• Spawn a multi-threaded Java program from a Windows command line program, spawner won't end until spa

  Short version: How can I prevent a spawned Java process in Windows from blocking the spawning process from ending? Long version: I'm trying to spawn a multi-threaded Java program (Selenium RC, not that it should matter) from a program launched from the Windows command line (NAnt's <exec> task, again, not that it should matter). I'm doing it using the Windows "start" command, and the spawned process is started and runs correctly. The spawning process receives control back and finishes (NAnt says "BUILD SUCCEEDED"), but doesn't actually exit to the command line. When the spawned process finally terminates (could be hours later), the command process returns and the command line prompt occurs. Example: Here are a few headlines about a recent Broadway play: 1 - David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross, Starring Al Pacino, Opens on Broadway 2 - Al Pacino in 'Glengarry Glen Ross': What did the critics think? 3 - Al Pacino earns lackluster reviews for Broadway turn 4 - Theater Review: Glengarry Glen Ross Is Selling Its Stars Hard 5 - Glengarry Glen Ross; Hey, Who Killed the Klieg Lights? Problem: Running a fuzzy-string match over these records will establish some relationships, but not others, even though a human reader could pick them out from context in much larger datasets. How do I find the relationship that suggests #3 is related to #4? Both of them can be easily connected to #1, but not to each other. Is there a (Googlable) name for this kind of data or structure? What kind of algorithm am I looking for? Goal: Given 1,000 headlines, a system that automatically suggests that these 5 items are all probably about the same thing. To be honest, it's been so long since I've programmed I'm at a loss how to properly articulate this problem. (I don't know what I don't know, if that makes sense). • XNA Quadtree with LOD

  I'm looking to create a fairly large environment, and as such would like to implement a quadtree and use LOD on it. I've looked through numerous examples and I get the basic idea of a quadtree. Start with a root node with 4 vertices covering the whole map and divide into 4 children nodes until I meet some criteria(max number of triangles) I'm looking for some very very basic algorithm or explanation with respect to drawing the quadtree. What vertices need to be stored per iteration? When do I determine what vertices to draw? When to update indices and vertices? Hope to integrate the bounding frustrum? Do I include parent and child vertices? I'm looking for very simple instruction on what to do. I've scoured the internet for days now looking, but everyone adds extra code and a different spin without explanation. I understand quadtrees, but not with respect to 3d rendering and lod. A link to an outside source will probably have been read by myself already and won't help. Regards, Byron.

• Superfish Supersubs <li> menu items width

  I've been stuck on this one for some time now and would really appreciate some assistance. I'm developing a superfish horizontal dropdown menu. I would like to know how to, using supersubs, set the width of the dropdown menu items to that of the largest items width in the drop down. The default is : $('ul.sf-menu').supersubs({ minWidth: 40, maxWidth: 41, extraWidth: 1 }).superfish(); I would like something like : $('ul.sf-menu').supersubs({ minWidth: 40, **maxWidth: auto or 100%**, extraWidth: 1 }).superfish(); I would appreciate any help at all. • How can I create an external SSL wrapper/tunnel page for an insecure webpage behind a firewall?

  I have an security cam with a built-in webpage inside my home network. That camera is using basic HTTP authentication instead of SSL. I want to be able to access the camera's webpage from outside my network, but I don't want to open an unencrypted video stream to the outside world. Right now, I'm doing some cumbersome ssh tunneling where I bounce off an ssh server like: ssh -N -L 9090:CAMERA_IP:80 [email protected] and then I connect to my web page like: http://localhost:9090 But this is a pain. Now, gentle reader, I beseech you to tell me how I can use linux (Ubuntu) to get a fully encrypted SSL connection to my internal web page without the hassle of creating an ssh tunnel each time. I believe I can use stunnel, but I'm not sure of the command.

• How can you assign multiple Javascript functions to the upload_start_handler for WordPress's SWFUplo

  I've got 2 WordPress plugins (PhotoSmash and TwitPic-It) that need to hook into the SWFUploader for the Media Uploader in WordPress. SWFUpload has a setting "upload_start_handler" where you can specify a javascript function that will run immediately before the upload begins. The trouble is that I need to assign 2 different functions to run in separate plugins that may or may not coexist in a given user's WordPress blog. I want to make the implementation so that it allows other plugin authors to hook their own javascript functions. I don't know that I have access to the actual event being fired. The "upload_start_handler" is a setting on a JS object, not an event hook on the flash object. You set it like: swfu.settings.upload_start_handler = function(){ runFlashStartUploadFunctions(); } My current plan is to add a 2 functions and an array variable (check if they exists first). The array variable is intended to hold an array of function names (strings) to run when "runFlashStartUploadFunctions" gets called at upload start. The first function is to add new functions to the array. The second function is "runFlashStartUploadFunctions", and it will iterate through the array and eval each function name. • Memory layout of executable

  Hi all, When loading an executable then segments like the code, data, bss and so on need to be placed in memory. I am just wondering, if someone could tell me where on a standard x86 for example the libc library is placed. Is that at the top or bottom of memory. • Most effective way to draw 4 lines on a screen?

  basic question, but I'm unsure: I want to draw 4 short lines 1px lines on a view. What is the best way to approach this task? Options:- Load an image of the line, can create 4 UIImageViews with it. Create my own subclass of a UIView that draws a line in the draw rect method. Draw elsewhere on another view, another UIImageView that has an UIImage inside it (is this possible?) Another way? • Can't customize the application switcher

  I'm trying to change the shortcut for switching applications from Alt+Tab to Ctrl+Tab, but changes in the System Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Navigation are being ignored. Even if I disable the Switch applications shortcut entirely, it still maps to Alt+Tab. At one point I had some keys remapped with xmodmap, but since then I have deleted that configuration and rebooted. My keyboard layout settings are all defaults. The OS is Ubuntu 12.04, with all software updated this afternoon. It would also be nice to have the variation of application switching that includes one icon per window, instead of one icon per application, since I am frequently switching between windows of an application and would rather not wait for the switcher to realize I want a different window of the current application. My other Ubuntu 12.04 install has the application switcher that I like, but I'm not sure how to choose between them on this install (which was set up by my university department). Thanks if anyone can help me with this.

• Running UBUNTU from a USB Flash drive on Acer

  I've made a bootable USB flash drive to run UBUNTU. The drive works fine on MOST laptops/computers I try: It does not want to start on my (favourite) Acer Aspire 5745 (Windows 7 64 bit). The opening screen has SYSLINUX 4.06 EDD 4.06-pre1 (...) and simply sits there. I was using UBUNTU 12.04.1 64 bit until I tried booting to the Acer this morning. I've tried booting to 10.04 as well (saw this as a fix on a discussion) with the same result. I really want to use the Acer for development and do not want to wipe my Windows 7 from the hard disk. Are there any solutions/answers?

• Application switcher is broken

  After a normal update of my Ubuntu 12.04 install last week, my application switcher has stopped working. I've tried all different settings in CompizConfig, including a variety of shortcut keys and both switcher versions ("Application Switcher" and "Static Application Switcher"). So far there has been no way to get any form of application switcher to appear on my screen. Can anyone give me an idea what might be wrong, or where I might look for more information?   My growing company has a team of developers working on a number of separate projects. Our developers depend on us to keep them working, and we depend on them to make our clients happy. Our projects have differing start and end dates, as you can imagine. The company's responsibility to the developers is to make sure we have clients waiting in the wings so that when one project ends, another can start. For now, finding clients is not a problem and not the topic of this question. What I'm trying to think through right now is, how can I best measure/view/evaluate the end dates of projects so that I know when I need to start courting the next client. Is there a tool that does this? If it's just a spreadsheet, what might it look like?

• VMware ARP/Mac Networking

  Hi Guys, I am very interested in how VMware networking works. I have scoured the VMware website and read their data sheets, this has given me some basic knowledge. I now have some questions. Lets assume that we have a physical server running the VMware hypervisor. The physical server is running a Virtual Machine. The physical box has one physical NIC. The NIC is connected to a switch, as so is a desktop client. Now, this is where my first question lies. The VM has an IP address: 192.168.1.1. How do desktop clients on the network communicate with this VM? So, the client pings 192.168.1.1. The ping packet is sent to the switch. The switch checks its MAC address table and sees that 192.168.1.1 is associated with the MAC address of the physical NIC. Correct? I then assume that the ping packet is sent to the server's physical NIC, where the hypervisor routes the packet to the VM thats using 192.168.1.1? Please could you give me a run down as to how VM networking works? Many thanks, Ross

• dynamic insert php mysql and preformance

  I have a folder/array of images, it may be 1, maximum of 12. What I need to do is dynamically add them so the images are added to an images table. At the moment I have $directory = "portfolio_images/$id/Thumbs/"; $images = glob("" . $directory . "*.jpg"); for ( $i= 0; $i <= count($images); $i += 1) { mysql_query("INSERT INTO project_images (image_name, project_id)VALUES ('$images[0]', '$id')") or die(mysql_error()); } this is fine but it does not feel right, how is this for performance?
