  • Samba authentication problem when attempting to connect from Windows client

    I've got a Linux server running Ubuntu and Samba. I've created two shares in Samba that point to directories that are owned by the user "cameron". When I attempt to connect to these shares on Windows 7 is connects and allows me to see the files but they are read-only. This is the desired action for guest users but not for authenticated users. My user on the Windows client is "Cameron" and has the same password as the Linux user "cameron". I don't think my Windows user has authenticated against the Linux user. I even created a users.map file to map the user cameron (linux) to Cameron (windows) but still it does not work.   • team viewer 8 beta wont run

    I installed team viewer 7 and then one of my friends using windows got version 8 so I installed the beta of version 8 for linux.   • Updating "Inactive" Chunks

    In my game, the only chunks (4x4 areas of tiles) in memory are the ones that the player is in. However, chunks need to have updates applied to them over time. A (likely) well-known example would be MineCraft: even if the player isn't in a chunk, the wheat still needs to grow over time. My current solution is to call a method and pass in the time since the chunk was active.. but what if the chunk depends on nearby chunks for information, i.e. vines spreading or similar? Is there any reasonable solutions to this problem, or should I simply not depend on nearby chunks?

  • Hotmail — avoid sign up confirmation / lost password being marked as spam

    When sending legit large volume Emails from our IP (e.g. for sign up confirmation or Lost password) it gets marked as Junk in Hotmail. In the past, there was the Sender ID SPF Record Submission Form, where you could put yourself on the radar of Microsoft. See this old discussion. However, as of April 2012 this has been abandoned. Any hints what to do now? What is a good way to contact the Hotmail team?

    Is there a definitive guide to writing code comments, aimed at budding developers? Ideally, it would cover when comments should (and should not) be used, and what comments should contain. This answer: Do not comment WHAT you are doing, but WHY you are doing it. The WHAT is taken care of by clean, readable and simple code with proper choice of variable names to support it. Comments show a higher level structure to the code that can't be (or is hard to) show by the code itself. comes close, but it's a little concise for inexperienced programmers (an expansion on that with several examples and corner cases would be excellent, I think).

  • How to Set Ubuntu 12.04 to it's factory settings like when u first installed it?

    Well, this is a simple answered question, from the title, but my real problem is hard af. I have set ubuntu to use root, then it wouldn't let me log into the admin account only root and guest I deleted the admin account, remade another, then attempted to disable root account. This failed - I messed up the password, the original password was "root" I also didn't set a password for my new admin account, so It says it has one, whats the default password for it? I can't moderate my ubuntu system at all now. I have tried to drop to cmd shell thing, it asks for the root password, i type 'root' and any other possible passwords, it doesn't work. To reset ubuntu to factory settings i have found that i could enter the following code: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh -a sudo Requires admin password, that I cant find out without root password and I don;t know. My goal is to try to fix this without remaking a bootable usb for ubuntu, because I lost the one i made for this. so If i can't, please say so. If you can help thanks!

    Trying to install OpenVZ kernel on Centos 6.3, Yes my kernel is installed i can see it in the /boot folder, yes it is Rhel6 and yes it is all up to date, i checked this with yum update. My issue comes when i reboot my server with that kernel set as the default, it doesn't load, below i shall put a copy of my grub.conf file and my menu.lst file.     I was just wondering if anyone knew how to/or knew of a good guide to setting up mac Time Machine backup server on a fedora 17 machine. I recently ran into an issue with my HDD and lost all of my data, so I don't want it to ever happen again, as it was quite traumatising, haha! I just want to be able to back all of my data up on my fedora machine from my mac, at scheduled times when I connect to my home network. If anyone could help, it would be fantastic, I searched around on google, but all of the ones I found were for older distros. Thanks guys!

    I've just been following the tutorial on the CakePHP website to create a simple Blog as a way to learn a bit about Cake. However I have run into an error and not sure why as I have followed exactly what the tutorial says.   • Disable Facebook plug-in on default Firefox

    This may a Firefox question rather than Ubuntu but since the plug-in seem to be integrated with the Ubuntu status bar so I think I should try my luck here. Just update to Firefox 17 and not sure why now when I go to Facebook a icon show in launcher and a entry for Facebook at the top-right conner under the message icon. How can I disable this plug-in?     I am trying to recreate this, and I have been fairly successful. I am having issues with the collision handling though. Although the collision handling seems to work, it has very strange behavior. Here is what I have so far.   • sprintf and % signs in text

    A problem I recently ran into was that when trying to update a field in my database using this code would not work. I traced it back to having a % sign in the text being updated ($note, then $note_escaped)... Inserting it with sprintf worked fine though. Should I not be using sprintf for updates, or should it be formed differently?     Hello, I am trying to get the size of a user's local profile using VBScript. I know the directory of the profile (typically "C:\Users\blah"). The following code does not work for most profiles (Permission Denied error 800A0046): Dim folder Dim fso Set fso = WScript.CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") Set folder = fso.GetFolder("C:\Users\blah") MsgBox folder.Size ' Error occurs here Is there another way to do this? UPDATE: I did some deeper digging and it turns out that the Permission Denied error occurs if permission is denied to some subfolders or files of the directory whose size I wish to get. In the case of user profiles, there's always a few system files that even the Administrator group does not have permission to access. To get around this, I wrote a function that tries to get the folder size the normal way (above), then, if the error occurs, it recurses into the subdirectories of the folder, ignoring folder sizes that are permission denied (but not the rest of the folders).   • How would I reset a usb hub multiplier driver?

    I have a usb port which connects a little man usb hub I got for Christmas. It worked fine to begin with however now it works on any computer other than my own. When I plug the man in it lights up and when I plug things into the man it says they have malfunctioned but when I plug them straight into tha port it's fine. Is there somesort of driver that needs to be refreshed? I have no idea how these work so please explain! I use windows 7 32bit.

  • Ubuntu - changing another users file permissions

    I have setup Ubuntu as a development web server - however I am experiencing problems with file permissions. I have 2 users, user1 and user2, and they both have been put into the group www-data. I have uploaded a new file with user1 so the file is owned by user1 and the www-data group. At present if user2 wants to modify the permissions on that file to say 777 - they cannot. Is there a way to allow any users within a group to be able to modifiy permissions etc.. on this file? I have tried changing umask to 002 and a few other combinations that were suggested without luck.
