  • DIG command is hanging and not timing out as expected

    I ran into the following issue by accident when playing around with the DIG command and testing some domain names. Why does DIG hang and not timeout after 10 seconds when executing the following: dig +tries=1 +tries=1 +retry=1 +time=5 +trace google.us.com DIG hangs for about 30 seconds instead of timing out and then dies with the following error message: dig: couldn't get address for 'ns.reserved-domain.uk.com': no more Do I need to set another flag/option for DIG to have it timeout instead of hanging, or is this a bug?     In a script I want to be able to write an IP address to somewhere easily, so I thought using dig (or a similar command) with back-ticks. However the simplest output I've been able to come up to wrt dig parameters is > dig -t A +noall +answer www.google.com www.google.com. 300 IN A 173.194.66.106 www.google.com. 300 IN A 173.194.66.104 Any way (extra arg, different tool instead of dig?) to get rid of the junk apart from the IP address?? (And please don't tell me to use sed.) Thanks

  • dig and dig -x are answering different

    I don't want the name provider to manage my records. I want to handle it myself. So I installed bind9 and made some configurations reading some articles and following some examples. bind didn't show any error after I created/edited the required files but; When I write `dig www.foo.com, I see the IP of the advertisement page of my name provider. But when I write dig -x server_ip_address; I see the name I purchased. What am I doing wrong? Can't a server be the nameserver of it's own? Is it a must to configure the records from the company I bought the name from? By the way, I realised that, my previous question was not clear, I deleted it, and asking the same question in a different way.

  • "dig +trace fqdn" and "dig fqdn" do not give the same result on a LAN with windows DNS server, why?

    in my company LAN I have a Ubuntu 14.04 server running in Virtualbox (as guest) on a Windows 7 (the host) with network interface bridged (so the Ubuntu server belongs to the LAN, with its ip: 192.168.1.85). I have a website on this server: mywebsite.com The gateway for the LAN to the internet is 192.168.1.1 (Cisco 1841)--188.188.188.254 as public IP. There is a Windows 2008 server that acts as DNS server and DHCP server on the LAN. I added a Forward zone "mywebsite.com" with A record - 192.168.1.85. Outside the LAN, mywebsite.com has public Dns records that point on the Cisco 1841 public IP (188.188.188.254) Now when I ping mywebsite.com from the lan, I quickly get 192.168.1.85. But when I'm connecting through the browser on the clients, it's not always fast. So I'm wondering: Are my requests really/directly resolved and forwarded to 192.168.1.85, OR are they sent out of the LAN, and then forwarded back to the CISCO public 188.188.188.254:80 and NAT to the Ubuntu server before being served ??? Any idea why my dedicated machine is giving me the host name of the responding DNS-Server and my local machine is only returning the ip-address? Thanks in advance UPDATE The reverse DNS-Lookup is working without any problems. Also, I just checked this on my local mac and...exactly the same problem occurs. Is it possible that this has to do with the local router/modem/ISP?

    I installed dnsmasq on a machine of mine (It's a Kubuntu 12.04 LTS), backed only by /etc/hosts (no connection to the Internet until later). Now, if I dig mymachine, I get 192.168.0.1, but if I try to nslookup mymachine, I get: >> connection timed out; no servers could be reached Tried also nslookup mymachine.mynicedomain.org - didn't work either. pinging (Edit:) succeeds. This happens both on the server machine itself and on other machines on the network. How can I the DNS lookups to work? What problem is preventing nslookup from succeeding?     I have Ubuntu 12.04 with BIND9, working just as a caching server (forwarding to 8.8.8.8). When I use, for example, dig +norecurse @l.root-servers.net www.uniroma1.it, I obtain the following output ; << DiG 9.8.1-P1 << +norecurse @l.root-servers.net www.uniroma1.it ; (1 server found) ;; global options: +cmd ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached Using Wireshark I discovered that the outgoing queries are correct, but there aren't any incoming answers. Why? P.S. Using simply dig www.uniroma1.it I obtain the correct answers.

That server provides, DNS, DHCP etc. Lets say my Windows domain is my-windows-domain and the server's host name is my-server. The domain's DNS zone is my-windows-domain.local. The server's IP address is 192.168.1.5.     I ran the following command on linux >> dig . I got the following response ;; AUTHORITY SECTION: . 281 IN SOA A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET. NSTLD.VERISIGN-GRS.COM. 2010032400 1800 900 604800 86400 why does the response not contain the IP address of the root server? what do the numbers at the end of the reply mean. one of them is probably (definitely) the date. why does it report 2 root servers a.root and nstld.verisign? when i send the following queries dig com. ;; AUTHORITY SECTION:com. 51 IN SOA a.gtld-servers.net. nstld.verisign-grs.com. 1269425283 1800 900 604800 86400 again i do not get the ip addresses. when i query for the gtld server specified i can get the ip address. why is the response of dig net. same as that of dig com. except that instead of 51 we have 19 in the response.

  • dig lookup different from system lookup

    Hello, I am running dd-wrt and I configured it's dns server to resolve a few hosts inside my network. When I use dig to lookup these hosts, they are resolved OK, but when I try to ping those hosts I always receive an unknown host error message.     To check the record for the domain, run dig with domain name as the parameter. dig example.com any I get the below result. Why there is no A record show in the result. What did i do wrong during the setup. Please advice what suppose to look into it.     I am a Network Admin from India, managing a large University Network of more than 15000 users. Here goes my problem - My DNS is unable to get ip address for ns1.p34.dynect.net. when i use dig +trace twitter.com on my DNS Server i get this messages:- dig: couldn't get address for 'ns1.p34.dynect.net': failure and this is happening with all those sites listed with dynect.net like twitter,linkedin,quora etc. Find the attached screen shot for the same message. Right now I have temporally fixed (not actually fixed) the problem using Google DNS (8.8.8.8) What could be the issue as It is able to resolve all other sites perfectlly.   • Guests can't access KVM host server by name although nslookup and dig returns correct record

    So I have a KVM host that also runs an apache server with some yum repos. The VM guests are connected to the default virtual network, which is configured to offer DHCP and forwarding with NAT on virbr0 (192.168.12.1). The guests can successfully access the yum repos on the host by IP address, so for example curl 192.168.122.1/repo1 returns the content without problems. But I'd like to have the guests be able to reach the web server on the host by name rather IP address.
