  • Disable laptop's display on boot when used with external display

    - by Ryan
I keep my laptop tucked away and solely use an external display with it via HDMI. In Windows 7 display settings, I have it set up to "Show desktop only on 2 [my external display]" This works fine in all cases except when I boot the laptop when the external display is already connected. In that case, the laptop's display stays on and sticks at the Windows 7 boot logo unless I manually shut the display off. (I should mention that while the laptop's display is stuck at the boot logo, the external monitor and computer are running just fine.) The laptop is an Asus N56VZ with Nvidia 650m graphics and the latest drivers. I've checked Nvidia's control panel as well as the BIOS and nothing looked very promising. Any ideas as to how I can get my laptop screen to shut itself off after booting into Windows?

  • Force the computer to always use current display settings

    - by sazpaz
So I'm having a terrible black screen problem with my new installation of Windows 8. The screen basically goes to black every time I turn it on or sleep, or connect to an external or monitor. I dont really know what steps actually cause the problem and cant seem to figure what steps allow the screen to come back, besides forcing restarts, going to sleep and waking up, and smashing Win + P. I have a strong feeling it's because the Switchable graphics I have (Intel HD + Radeon 5060), so I'm looking for a way to make the computer always use a specified mode (i.e the current mode I'm on, that does show stuff on the screen) and force it to use it everytime? Any ideas? EDIT: I've Installed all the latest drivers I've found. Tried most of the solutions around the web for this problem. Updated the BIOS to UEFI (from HP Support Assistant), etc. Laptop is an HP- Envy 14

  • Cloning (mirroring) laptop display to area of external monitor display

    - by intuited
I'm using Maverick "10.10" Meercat on a HP Pavilion tx2110. This machine has an NVidia Go6150 graphics card, and sports a 1280x800 display. I have an external monitor which can do 1280x1024 resolution. FWIW I'm using openbox as my window manager; as I understand it this shouldn't be a factor. I'd like to clone the display to the monitor, so that the size of the desktop remains at 1280x800, and there is a horizontal blank area on the external monitor. I.E. I want to avoid having to pan the display of the desktop on either monitor. So the actual resolution of the monitor would be 1280x1024, but the resolution of the section of the monitor where stuff was actually being displayed would be 1280x800. Using the nvidia-settings applet, I'm able to set up the cloned display so that the desktop size is 1280x1024 (the resolution of the external monitor), but can't find a way to instead have the desktop size stay at the resolution of the laptop's built-in display. Is this achievable? Ideally I'd like the external monitor's blank area to be at the top of the screen, i.e. for it to align the display with the bottom of the screen.

  • Different display arrangements for two identical displays

    - by Niels
I have a MacBook Pro running OSX Lion and two workplaces with identical setups: at both places I have an 27" LED Cinema display. At one workplace my MacBook is on the left side of the external display, and at the other workplace it is on the right. I would like to have two different display arrangements for the two different setups, however, when I change the display arrangements in System Preferences when connected to one display, the arrangement is changed for the other display as well. I used to have a 27" and a 24" Cinema Display, and OSX used to remember the display arrangements for those different displays, but now the displays are identical, so they use the same arrangements setting. Is there any way to tell OSX to handle two identical displays as different ones so I can configure two different arrangements for the two setups?

  • xgamma -display parameter for dual monitor setup

    - by Shiplu
I want to change gamma for my first monitor. Every time I invoke xgamma with different -display parameters it somehow points to my second monitor. But I want to modify first one. I tried these commands. The parameters I have used for -display are :0, :0.0, :0.1, :1.0, :1.1, :1. Only the first 2 works. But it points to my second monitor. Not the first one. Here is a shell script to test it. shiplu@KubuntuD:~$ xgamma -display :0 -> Red 1.000, Green 1.000, Blue 1.000 shiplu@KubuntuD:~$ xgamma -display :0.0 -> Red 1.000, Green 1.000, Blue 1.000 shiplu@KubuntuD:~$ xgamma -display :0.1 xgamma: unable to open display ':0.1' shiplu@KubuntuD:~$ xgamma -display :1.0 xgamma: unable to open display ':1.0' shiplu@KubuntuD:~$ xgamma -display :1.1 xgamma: unable to open display ':1.1' shiplu@KubuntuD:~$ xgamma -display :1 xgamma: unable to open display ':1' How can I change the gamma for the first/primary monitor?

  • Dual Monitor (Monitor and TV)

    - by umpirsky
I connected TV to my computer, and trying to set dual display. Whatever resolution I choose for my second display (TV) I get message like this: The selected configuration for displays could not be applied required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(2704, 1050), minimum=(320, 200), maximum=(1680, 1680) How can I fix this? Also, while I was experimenting system went to deadlock, I restarted and after boot monitor just turns off once system is up. I boot in recovery mode and after several retries fixed it somehow, I don't know how, probably by changing display config from display manager. now I found xorg.conf.new file in my home dir: Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "X.org Configured" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 Screen 1 "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0" Screen 2 "Screen2" RightOf "Screen1" InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" EndSection Section "Files" ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi/:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi/:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/100dpi" FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi" FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType" FontPath "built-ins" EndSection Section "Module" Load "extmod" Load "dbe" Load "glx" Load "dri" Load "dri2" Load "record" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "auto" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" VendorName "Monitor Vendor" ModelName "Monitor Model" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor1" VendorName "Monitor Vendor" ModelName "Monitor Model" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor2" VendorName "Monitor Vendor" ModelName "Monitor Model" EndSection Section "Device" ### Available Driver options are:- ### Values: <i>: integer, <f>: float, <bool>: "True"/"False", ### <string>: "String", <freq>: "<f> Hz/kHz/MHz", ### <percent>: "<f>%" ### [arg]: arg optional #Option "NoAccel" # - by Jean-Pierre
I am not that good with programmation, but I guess you are. we are planning to install 2 display monitor in the back of the other one. There will be 1 computer that will display a different application on each display monitor. I want to be able to switch display 1 to 2 and display 2 to display 1 to show what is on the other monitor without having to move themselve on the back of the monitor to see the opposite monitor. I need a script that will switch display every x times. How can I do that ?

  • Secondary Monitor won't Display at Full Resolution with Primary Display Disconnected

    - by Laramie
I have had a bad day. Among today's events, the LCD display on my Dell E6500 notebook failed. It had been working with a secondary monitor connected through a VGA cable at 1600x900 resolution until I removed the LCD from my notebook for repair. Now the max resolution available on the secondary display is 1024x768. If I reconnect the burned out primary display, the secondary monitor is again available at 1600x900. The video card is an onboard Mobil Intel 4. How can I maintain the secondary display at 1600x900 with the primary display disconnected (for repair)? Edit: I just noticed that when Windows boots, it displays at the correct resolution and I can see my desktop in all its glory for a couple seconds then reverts to 1024x768.

  • How to backup or export PowerStrip display profiles?

    - by Sk8erPeter
I would like to save two of my saved PowerStrip display profiles. Earlier I set 720x540 resolution and some other settings (frequency, etc.) to another display device usually used in extended mode, which is now NOT connected: But when I go to "Advanced timing options", I see some different settings. I thought I could copy settings with the copy icon , but this way I would copy the wrong ones, not the predefined ones (with the 720x540 resolution): What is the best method to "export" these settings before formatting the hard drive?

  • Is there a work around to configure brightness or color on a DisplayLink monitor?

    - by shaneykakes
I run 3 monitors in addition to my laptop display at work - two of the monitors are using DisplayLink adapters. I've always thought that all my displays were too bright (and possibly give me headaches?) - even after I reduced their brightness as far as possible using the monitor menus and the nvidia software control panel. Recently I installed f.lux - I love it's "halogen" color profile which has improved my life considerably. The problem is that f.lux has no effect on/will not adjust the color & brightness of my two DisplayLink monitors. F.lux has a faq (#4 under troubleshooting) that addresses this - saying DisplayLink has no support for color calibration so f.lux only works with monitors "directly connected to your computer". Does anyone know of a work around? Specifically a way to use windows color management/profiles (or some other software) to adjust the brightness/color tone of DisplayLink monitors? Thanks in advance!

like PersonalInfo, contactInfo,Address there will be only one record, but for tags like "OtherInfo","academicInfo","ProfessionalInfo" there will be multiple records so in xml there are tags for that. now to edit tags having one record only for one user i did coding like: private void FillFamilyInfoControls(XElement rootElement) { ddlSunsign.DataBind(); XElement parentElement; string xPathQuery = "FamilyInfo/Fields"; parentElement = rootElement.XPathSelectElement(xPathQuery); txtGallantryHistory.Text = parentElement.Element("GallantryHistory").Attribute("value").Value; txtEthinicity.Text = parentElement.Element("Ethinicity").Attribute("value").Value; txtKulDev.Text = parentElement.Element("KulDev").Attribute("value").Value; txtKulDevi.Text = parentElement.Element("KulDevi").Attribute("value").Value; txtCaste.Text = parentElement.Element("Caste").Attribute("value").Value; ddlSunsign.SelectedValue = parentElement.Element("SunSignId").Attribute("value").Value; ddlSunsign.SelectedItem.Text = parentElement.Element("SunSignName").Attribute("value").Value; } private XElement UpdateFamilyInfoXML(XElement rootElement) { XElement parentElement; string xPathQuery = "FamilyInfo/Fields"; parentElement = rootElement.XPathSelectElement(xPathQuery); parentElement.Element("GallantryHistory").Attribute("value").Value = txtGallantryHistory.Text; parentElement.Element("Ethinicity").Attribute("value").Value = txtEthinicity.Text; parentElement.Element("KulDev").Attribute("value").Value = txtKulDev.Text; parentElement.Element("KulDevi").Attribute("value").Value = txtKulDevi.Text; UMSession.CurrentLoggedInUser.UserId.ToString(); parentElement.Element("ModifiedOn").Attribute("value").Value = System.DateTime.Now.ToString(); return rootElement; //rootElement.XPathSelectElement(xPathQuery) = parentElement; } these 2 functions i have used to update xml and to get data from xml and fill into controls. but for the tags where there are multiple records... i am not able to find any solution /control using which i an do it easily. coz my field's value is in attribute named "Value" when in the examples i saw its between opening and closing tag.. i have 2 methods to do so. 1 . i make one page to edit a single record and pass id of record to that page on editing. open the page in iframe on same page to edit and in page_load get data from database for id passed and fill it in control. 2 . i store xml on server as physical file and use it in page i opened in iframe to edit the record. so i am confused... can anybody please guide me that what shpould i do to let user provide interface to edit this xml data/user profile ?

  • Display brightness adjustment not working

    - by nibot
I have Ubuntu 11.04 installed on a Lenovo Thinkpad T410 laptop with nVidia GT218 display controller. I am unable to adjust the display brightness. Pressing Fn-Home and Fn-End brings up the display brightness on-screen display and the indicated level increases or decreases as it should. But the actual display brightness does not change. Earlier I was able to Ctrl-Alt-F1 over to a text terminal and then do Fn-Home / Fn-End to successfully change the display brightness, and then Ctrl-Alt-F8 back to the Gnome session with the new brightness. But after upgrading to 11.04 the psuedoterminals have disappeared.

  • External display suddenly not detected

    - by NChase
I have a Lenovo IdeaPad U410 running Ubuntu Desktop 13.04. I have an external monitor that I connect to via HDMI, and it's worked flawlessly for six months. I plug in my laptop, it detects the display. The "change display" key built into the laptop works for switching between the two screens. Never any problems. This afternoon, when I reconnected my computer after taking it into another room for a bit, it didn't work. When I open up Display settings, it can't detect the display. I tried disconnecting/reconnecting everything multiple times. And most strangely, that same "change display" key now behaves like a Super key, opening the dash instead of toggling the display. Nothing at all changed between when I plugged it in this morning and when it stopped working a few hours later. I tried xrandr, that doesn't detect it either. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Xubuntu dual monitor broke display

    - by Arman yaraee
After I used Settings Display to enable my second monitor, my first display is not working anymore either. So I enabled both, then clicked save configuration since it was working and boom it crashed. Now when I start up, I can see the screen which I type my password but it goes black after that! When I boot into recovery mode it works fine but in Settings Display I don't see HDMI at all to disable it. Is there anyway to restore all display setting to default? (I can Ctrl+ALT+F1 and type commands but xrandr returns no results over there) EDIT I should clarify that system bios is set to laptop display

  • Apple Cinema Display 23" and grub

    - by Joshua Pruitt
As per the title, I'm running my display on an older 23" Apple Cinema Display (because I still love it, darn it). I'm pushing it with an ATI Radeon DVI dual-link PCIe card. It works just fine, except GRUB doesn't seem able to push out the 1920x1200 pixel resolution needed in order to show me a boot menu! So..., I keep a smaller second monitor connected as the primary display so that I can see the boot menu and boot the system (I don't use that display once booted). This is a goofy work-around, and I'd like to just use my single display exclusively to boot the machine. I found some grub codes for higher resolutions, but not for 1920x1200. Is it capable of this? Did I just miss it? Thanks in advance!!!

  • Default program startup display

    - by Tony Martin
I have a dual display setup and would like to be able to set which display a piece of software starts on. Most software seems to return to the last display but Stellarium always starts in the primary display. Does Linux have a way of forcing the startup display or is it something the individual program has to manage? Thanks. EDIT And with no changes on my part Stellarium is behaving nicely and remembering which screen it was on. Still nice to know if there is a way of forcing this.

  • How to install an alternative display manager?

    - by Mnementh
I want to replace gdm with another display manager. I did 'aptitude install slim' (tried also xdm) and got a possibility to configure which display manager should be used. But after the reboot the display manager didn't got started. The Ubuntu-logo with the points simulating a progress goes on and on. If I press ESC, I can see, that slim (or xdm) was started, but I cannot see any login-screen. How can I use these alternative display managers? I use Ubuntu 10.10.

  • Second display running off laptop VGA not correctly positioned (offset left and up)

    - by Filthy Pazuzu
I have black bars on the right and bottom of my display! I'm running my laptop's VGA output to an recognized as a It is 20", but the assumed 3" difference does not account for the incorrect position. Everything displays fine. It runs high-res video beautifully. But it's 3/4" offset left and an unreasonably annoying 1/4" offset up. I've tried going through the display's annoying & useless menu, but it doesn't have any way to adjust the position. I'm certainly no linux newbie, but on this Ubuntu (Pangolin, BTW) I can't figure out how to make simple positional display changes on Ubuntu. It's not only frustrating, it's a bit humiliating! So. Does anyone know of an app that will allow me to make basic display position alterations? ("App" - annoyingly trendy, but a useful word - no matter how grating.) Thanks, & Cheers, Paz

  • Unrecognized Display

    - by Kevin
I just installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 12.04, and before I installed drivers, I was able to get my two monitor setup working just fine. However, after updating all my drivers and installing all the recommended software, my second display is no longer detected. My main display is called "Laptop" (which it was detected as the monitor name previously), but it is the only display listed. I tried to detect displays, nothing happened. The monitor is plugged in, and should be working fine - after all, it just was. How can I fix the problem of Ubuntu not listing my second monitor in the display settings?

  • How to reset display settings in XFCE \ Ubuntu 12.04 and also flgrx drivers

    - by Agent24
I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 and since I hate unity I installed the Xubuntu package and am using XFCE instead. Since I have a Radeon HD5770 I also installed the fglrx drivers. This all went fine (aside from the fact that the post-release update fglrx drivers have an error on installation and Ubuntu thinks they're not installed when they actually are. I configured my display settings (dual monitors, a 17" CRT on VGA and a 17" LCD on DVI) in the amdcccle program and everything was perfect. THEN, 2 days ago, I accidentally clicked on the "Display" settings in XFCE "settings" manager. After that, everything got screwed. Now, I normally run the CRT at 1152x854 and the LCD at 1280x1024 with the CRT as my primary monitor (with panel) and the LCD without panels etc just to display other windows when I want to drag them over there. The problem is now that if I set my CRT to 1152x864, it stays at 1280x1024 virtually and half the stuff falls off the screen. It also puts the LCD at 1280x1024 BUT then overlays the CRT's display ontop with different wallpaper in an L shape down the right-hand and bottom edges. In short, nothing makes sense and everything is FUBAR. I tried uninstalling fglrx through synaptic, and renaming xorg.conf and also the xfce XML file that has monitor settings but it still won't make sense. Unity on the other hand can currently set everything normally so the problem appears to be only with XFCE. In any case, I can't even get the fglrx drivers back, when I re-installed them, I can't run amdccle anymore as it says the driver isn't installed!! Can someone help me reset my XFCE settings so the monitors aren't screwed with some incorrect virtual desktop size and also so I can get fglrx drivers back and working? I really don't want to have to format and reinstall and go through all the hassle but it looks like I may have to :(

  • Turn off laptop display and have monitor

    - by Ryan B
My laptop display has stopped working and is unfixable! Anyway, I got a full HD monitor and plugged that into the HDMI port of the laptop. I have changed the power settings so that I can close the lid and still have the monitor on, and this all works. However because it is on "mirror displays", I cannot get the full 1080p resolution that the monitor supports, and when I turn off mirror displays and switch off the laptop screen, the monitor will also switch off! I'm really stuck, as I can only get the monitor to display its full resolution if I have it with the laptop screen turned on, and I dont want this because (as the laptop display does not work) things get lost on that side of the screen. HELP. (Dell Studio 1537 Monitor is Samsung SA300 Connected through HDMI Ubuntu 11.10)

  • Half-maximized windows misplaced after switching display

    - by Arild
I have a laptop which I often plug into a larger screen with another display resolution. Thus I'm frequently changing the screen for the system to use. Also I've recently discovered the advantages of half-maximizing windows when working alternatingly in two or more applications. When changing screens, however the windows basically retain their absolute sizes and positions. So in my case the windows typically have their bottoms outside display, don't fill up half the display, etc. I have to half-maximize the windows again every time I switch screens. I'm thinking this should be subject of a bug report but I find it difficult to know where to file them. Any ideas on what package is responsible?

  • Second display is rotated

    - by pram
I've just updated to Ubuntu 12.10 last night. When I was at the office, I connected my laptop with a projector. Although it can detect the projector, it incorrectly set the projector portrait. Also, if I click the Rotation dropdown, it has no Normal option. It only offered Anticlockwise and Clockwise options. Ofcourse the projector would display my desktop 90 degrees clockwise/anticlockwise. I've just test my laptop again with an LCD monitor, and it happened again. Below is my screenshot for display settings. My display adapter is Intel GMA 950. How to fix this problem?
