  • How to Sync Specific Folders With Dropbox

    - by Matthew Guay
Would you like to sync specific folders with Dropbox instead of automatically syncing all of your folders to all of your computers?  Here’s how using Selective Sync available in the latest Beta version of Dropbox. Dropbox is a great tool for keeping your important files synced between your computers, and we have covered many interesting things you can do with your Dropbox account.  But until now, there was no way to only sync certain folders with each computer; it was all or nothing.  This could be frustrating if you wanted to store large files from one computer but didn’t want them on a computer with a smaller hard drive.  The latest Beta version of Dropbox allows you to selectively choose which folders to sync between computers. Please Note: This feature is currently only available in the 0.8 beta version of Dropbox. Setup the new Beta Download the new beta version of Dropbox 0.8 (link below); choose the correct download for your system.  Run the installer as normal. It only took a couple seconds to install, though it made the taskbar disappear briefly at the end of the installation on our tests.  Strangely, the installer doesn’t let you know it’s finished installing; if you already had a previous version of Dropbox installed, it will simply start working from your system tray as before.  If this is a new installation of Dropbox, you will be asked to enter your Dropbox account info or create a new account.   Selectively Sync Folders By default, Dropbox will still sync all of your Dropbox folders to all of your computers.  Once this beta is installed, you can choose individual folders or subfolders you don’t want to sync.  Right-click the Dropbox icon in your system tray and select Preferences. Click the Advanced tab on the top, and then click the new Selective Sync button. Now uncheck any folders you don’t want to sync to this computer.  These folders will still exist on your other machines and in the Dropbox web interface, but they will not be downloaded to this computer. The default view only shows your top-level folders in your Dropbox account.  If you wish to sync certain folders but exclude their subfolders, click the Switch to Advanced View button.   Expand any folder and uncheck any subfolders you don’t want to sync.  Notice that the parent folder’s check box is filled now, showing that it is partially synced. Click OK when you’ve made the changes you want.  Dropbox will then make sure you know these folders will stop syncing to this computer; click OK again if you’re sure you don’t want to sync these folders.   Dropbox will cleanup your folder and remove the files and folders you don’t want synced.   Next time you open your Dropbox folder, you’ll notice that the folders we unchecked are no longer in this computer’s Dropbox folder.  They are still in our Dropbox online account, and on any other computers we’re syncing with. If you add a new folder with the same name as a folder you stopped syncing, you’ll notice a grey minus icon over the folder.  This folder will not sync with your other computers or your online Dropbox account. If you want to add these folders back to this computer’s Dropbox, just repeat the steps, this time checking the folders you want to sync.  If you have any folders that were not syncing before, their names will have (Selective Sync Conflict) added to the end, and will sync with all of your computers. Conclusion We’re excited that we can now choose exactly which folders we want synced on each computer.  Since everything is still synced with the online Dropbox, we can still access any of the folders from anywhere.  This makes your Dropbox much more versatile, and can help you keep the folders synced exactly the way you want. • Retrieve contents of a public Dropbox folder?

    - by Sam
Is there a way to retrieve a list of the contents of a public Dropbox folder (preferably in PHP)? This is what a URL to a public file in Dropbox looks like: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1234567/publikPholder/textytext.txt One would think that jumping up one level to the directory in the URL... http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1234567/publikPholder/ ...would show all the public files. Nope. Nothing but a 404.

  • dropbox configuration

    - by Funenga
I've dropbox v1.4.17 installed and I want to change the path from (...)/Dropbox to (...)/dropbox. I think until v1.2 this was done by changing dropbox_path field in the sqlite file ~/.dropbox/config.db. Now, this field is hidden inside the encrypted ~/.dropbox/config.dbx (security reasons [1], I guess). Anyone has a solution to this? I'm thinking about placing my dropbox folder in ~/.local/share/Dropbox and then linking that to the path I want to set. [1] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqmqtborOSw

  • Run Dropbox as a service on Fedora 15

    - by Varun Madiath
I installed the dropbox using the text based install method described here. However I'd now like dropbox to start automatically when the machine starts up, and start syncing the files. I'll need dropbox to run as the dropbox user, from the dropbox users home directory. I think the following command will launch dropbox as the dropbox user, in the dropbox users home directory, would you correct me if this doesn't work? LANG=en_US.UTF-8 sudo -H -u dropbox ./.dropbox-dist/dropbox end script

  • Since a few days, Dropbox stopped syncing

    - by Fabio
Theres a new problem with nautilus-dropbox and is the worst for a service like Dropbox: stopped syncing and their tech support don't believe their users. The problem is: start dropbox it downloads index creates folders start to download files stop downloading files or the speed is like 0.3k/seg even deleting everything doesn't work, even syncing a single folder with a few files, not even configuring a different limit speed or let all your bandwith, nothing works for me and i have found many users with the same problem. it's strange, i have two computers with ubuntu 14.04 and one with windows 7, and in one of the linux machines it works fine, but not in the other one. Both of them are x64. The answers from the tech support starts with "delete everything and reinstall" to "you may be blocking port 443", yeah, sure (and if i do that half of internet dissapears, idiot), but nothing works. Someone has some idea? i cant find any log file (at least a text log file like in /var/log) to understand what is dropbox doing and what is not working. PS: sorry for my "english", is not my language Examples: dropbox slow on ubuntu 14.04 Dropbox does not sync on ubuntu 14.04 Dropbox Status (in spanish but is the same thing) fabio@canopus:~$ dropbox status Sincronizando (Quedan 330 archivos., Faltan 9 días.) • How to place a dropbox file into other dropbox

    - by Nrew
There is this file that I really want to download. The kahel os live cd I tried downloading it with 45kbps download rate and it would take 3 hours. And the connection is intermittent. So my download was cut. Is it possible to treat the file as your own and then put it to your own dropbox. And from there it would continue downloading.

  • DropSpace Syncs Android Files to Dropbox

    - by ETC
DropSpace is a free Android application that fixes the primary issue that plagues the official Dropbox app for Android–the lack of true file synchronization. Grab a copy of DropSpace and start enjoying true file syncing on the go. The official Dropbox app is limited to grabbing files from your Dropbox account or pushing files from your phone to your Dropbox account. Actual file synchronization, this manual push/pull model aside, is nowhere to be found. DropSpace fills that gap by enabling file synchronization between your SD card directories and your Dropbox directories. It’s packed with handy features including restricting file syncing to Wi-Fi connection only (great if you don’t want to chew up your very limited data plan) as well as numerous toggles for various settings like whether it should delete remote files if the local file is deleted, how often it should run the sync service, and more. Hit up the link below to grab a copy and take it for a test drive. DropSpace is free and works wherever Android does; Dropbox account required. • Dropbox often stalls "Saving 1 file", have to restart it

    - by Nicolas Raoul
Dropbox works well, but often the tray icon starts spinning forever with the tooltip message "Saving 1 file..." I usually don't worry about it, and I never had any loss, despite switching computers often. An easy solution is to restart Dropbox, it spins for a second before the tooltip says "All files up to date". But how to permanently prevent this problem? Ubuntu 2010.10 Dropbox 0.7.110 Dropbox stores about 50 text files, 1 MB in total.

  • Why does Dropbox fail with a "dropboxd not found" error?

  • Can't complete dropbox installation from behind proxy

    - by Mark Jones
Problem: My PC on campus sits behind a proxy (requiring authentication) and I can't setup Dropbox. I am convinced that this is a proxy issue as I can't setup Ubuntu one either (but I don't use Ubuntu One so that is not a problem). I have looked at the Ubuntu One fix but it seems to be to modify settings explicitly related to Ubuntu One. I can install the nautilus-dropbox package (compiled from source and from .deb package from website and from software centre) but once I click OK from the "Dropbox Installation" dialog box (prompting me to download the proprietary daemon) the installation just freezes with the OK button pressed. When I look at its process in System Monitor its waiting channel is inet_wait_for_connect. I have set the following proxy directives thus far: Added mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80 information to network proxy settings under network in settings. Added http_host and http_port variables under gconf-editor-system-proxy Added 'host', 'authentication_password' 'authentication_user' and ticked 'user authentication' and 'use_http_proxy' under gconf-editor-system-http_proxy Added export http_proxy="http://mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80/" to /etc/bash.bashrc Added Acquire::http::proxy "http://mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80/"; to /etc/apt/apt.conf (which is what I imagine is letting Software Center retrieve packages). (where ** is my password) I have also added the equivalent ftp and https lines for the above entries. I get the internet fine and Software Centre can download packages but thats it. Related issues: The software centre can't fetch reviews (but can download packages). When trying to add an online account in Gnome 3 a dialog pop up appears with "Error getting a Request Token: Cannot connect to proxy (proxy.waikato.ac.nz)" Updates: After some time (10mins ish) Dropbox shows an error dialog box that reads: Trouble connecting to Dropbox servers. Maybe your internet connection is down, or you need to set you http_proxy environment variable. Is there a way I can see what environment variables are currently set?

  • Forcing Zeitgeist to index Dropbox folder

    - by Jarmo
I am running Ubuntu 11.10, and I would like to force Zeitgeist to index my Dropbox folder. I understand that Zeitgeist is a passive service that logs particular events (such as opening or downloading files) for later searches, but I have large Dropbox folder that was downloaded without being logged by Zeitgeist. Short of manually opening and closing all files in my Dropbox folder, is there a way to have Zeitgeist index this folder so that I can later search it using the dash? Thanks!

  • Programmatically sync dropbox without daemon running

    - by user84207
I would like to 'manually' force dropbox to sync at certain times (eg at regular, daily intervals using cron, as part of a larger backup script). My goal is to substitute the dropbox daemon with single "sync" command invocations at only the times that I control. Looking at the documentation for the dropbox command on Ubuntu, I only see a way to start/stop the daemon, but not to force it to sync. Is there a lower level api available that can accomplish this?

  • Multi-account sync with Dropbox API

    - by Dan
I'm trying to create a web app that lets users share files with each other through Dropbox. At the moment, Dropbox handles all the sharing, and there's one central Dropbox account running on the web server that shares the folder with the people who want it. I'm trying to change it so people don't have to accept a new folder invitation each time. I'd like to have them authorize my app to access an app folder in their Dropbox account, and all their shared folders would go inside there. Any changes they make would get noticed by the app on the server and synced to everyone else's folders. There's a couple things I'm having trouble figuring out to make this work: Do I need to make repeated calls to /delta for every account? I can't think how else I'd do this, but that sounds like it would quickly turn into thousands of requests a minute just polling for updates. When someone adds a file, do I have to upload it once for each account? That seems like a huge waste of bandwidth. I've looked into using /copy_ref, which I think would add a file to another user's account without my app ever touching it, but my app's web interface also allows users to upload files directly to my server, which would then need to be synced with everyone else's folders. That file isn't on Dropbox's servers yet, so /copy_ref obviously wouldn't work. For a little extra context, my app is written in node.js, and I've been playing with this library to interface with Dropbox, which uses their REST API.

  • Dropbox.py on RHEL 6

    - by Timothy R. Butler
I'm trying to run a headless install of Dropbox on RHEL 6. The daemon seems to be running, but when I try to use Dropbox's associated dropbox.py tool to control the daemon, it fails to run with the following error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "./dropbox.py", line 26, in <module> import locale File "/usr/lib64/python2.6/locale.py", line 202, in <module> import re, operator ImportError: /home/dropbox/.dropbox-dist/operator.so: undefined symbol: _PyUnicodeUCS2_AsDefaultEncodedString I'm running the current RHEL build of Python 2.6: root@cedar [/home/dropbox/.dropbox-dist]# rpm -qv python python-2.6.6-29.el6_3.3.x86_64 (I'm not sure if this would be better suited to Stack Overflow since it is on the verge of being a programming issue, but since I'm trying to use a program straight from Dropbox, I placed it here.)

  • Dropbox fails to install on Ubuntu 13.10

    - by Fraxav
I've done some research and it seems Dropbox has some problems with the status icon on Ubuntu 13.10, but I can't even manage to install it. The very first time, I installed nautilus-dropbox from the app center on a freshly installed Saucy, but I couldn't see the status icon and clicking the app icon wouldn't help, so I uninstalled and rebooted. The second and third time, the app just freezed at about 75% while installing from app manager, so I had to shut down the computer and uninstall. Next I tried to install dropbox from the .deb (from website): it installed (the launcher?) from app manager, then the dialog prompted me to start dropbox and finally to download the official daemon, but the download freezed at 0% and made everything else buggy/laggy (probably also because I restarted nautilus, as required, at that point). After a purge and clean from terminal, some icons and this file (which I suspect is somehow responsible, but of course is locked) are still present on my computer. Can anyone help me figure how how to install it? How could I remove that configuration file so I can give it a last shot?

  • Mirror a Dropbox repository in Sharepoint and restrict access

    - by Dan Robson
I'm looking for an elegant way to solve the following problem: My development team uses Dropbox for sharing documents amongst our immediate group. We'd like to put some of those documents into a SharePoint repository for the larger group to be able to access, as granting Dropbox access to the group at large is not ideal. However, we'd like to continue to be able to propagate changes to the SharePoint site simply by updating the files in Dropbox on our local client machines, and also vice versa - users granted access on SharePoint that update files in that workspace should be able to save their files and the changes should appear automatically on our client PC's. I've already done the organization of the folders so that in Dropbox, there exists a SharePoint folder that looks something like this: SharePoint ----Team --------Restricted Access Folders ----Organization --------Open Access Folders The Dropbox master account and the SharePoint master account are both set up on my file server. Unfortunately, Dropbox doesn't seem to allow syncing of folders anywhere above the \Dropbox\ part of the file system's hierarchy - or all I would have to do is find where the Sharepoint repository is maintained locally, and I'd be golden. So it seems I have to do some sort of 2-way synchronization between the Dropbox folder on the file server and the SharePoint folder on the file server. I messed around with Microsoft SyncToy, but it seems to be lacking in the area of real-time updating - and as much as I love rsync, I've had nothing but bad luck with it on Windows, and again, it has to be kicked off manually or through Task Scheduler - and I just have a feeling if I go down that route, it's only a matter of time before I get conflicts all over the place in either Dropbox, SharePoint, or both. I really want something that's going to watch both folders, and when one item changes, the other automatically updates in "real-time". It's quite possible I'm going down the entirely wrong route, which is why I'm asking the question. For simplicity's sake, I'll restate the goal: To be able to update Dropbox and have it viewable on the SharePoint site, or to update the SharePoint site and have it viewable in Dropbox. And since I'm a SharePoint noob, I'll also need help hiding the "Team" subfolder from everyone not in a specific group in AD.

  • Dropbox indicator icon dissapears right after login

    - by garvamel
Even though Dropbox's app indicator dissapearing from the tray area seems like a recurrent enough problem, my issue is a litte different. When I login, I can see the app panel populating, and the dropbox icon does indeed appear (config'd as startup application), but after some other icons show up (bluetooth, battery, etc.) it's gone. It's still running though. I'm guessing it's having issues with staying pinned, and I don't know how to start addressing this problem. I have tried many if not all solutions provided here in the forums for the "icon missing" questions. So far: I've whitelisted everything regarding panel Uninstalled-reinstalled (with and without rebooting in between) Overwritten current installation Purged installation from terminal Installed from Software Center and from .deb file batch deleted every "dropbox" ocurrences from terminal (files and folders) and reinstalled Ran sudo apt-get install libappindicator1, it installed, but didn't solve anything I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS - 64 bits. Any insight would me much appreciated!

  • Configuring Dropbox on Ubuntu server

    - by Daniel
I've got a Ubuntu server running on an old laptop. The OS is on a 4GB USB drive and I use a SATA drive attached for storage. Now I wanted to set up Dropbox on this machine. I've got it running using this guide: http://www.byteindia.com/internet/install-dropbox-on-linux/482/. But I haven't synched yet because there won't be enough room in my home dir. My /home is on my 4GB USB since I never use it and all my data is on the 2TB drive mounted in /media/. What is the best way to set this up? Dropbox doesn't support moving the folder in Linux yet. I found a script to move the folder but it seems outdated. Perhaps I can use symlinks in some clever way? Or maybe move my /home folder to my SATA drive? Thanks in advance
