• Make eix available version match emerge

  We have out Gentoo hosts using a binhost with EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--getbinpkgonly --usepkgonly" in the make.conf file so that the host only pulled down the binary hosts. All works well from that side. I use eix to check on software versions for upgrades but have hit a problem where eix will see an available version ahead of what is available on the binserver. Using glibc as an example ietpl [VE] / # emerge -s glibc Searching... • Can't enable apache mod on emerge

  I want to add mod_proxy and mod_proxy_http to Apache server on my Gentoo, but apparently some file with high priority on the system is disabling the mods and preventing me to install. I am currently editing /usr/portage/profiles/base/make.defaults file, but it gets updated (and changes lost) every time I update the system. I have to edit it every time I update the system/reinstall Apache. Besides that, I have already added dependencies to the /etc/portage/package.use file: www-servers/apache proxy proxy_http What other files do I have do change or should check flags so I can enable proxy and do not have to edit files again every time?

  Hi, I participate in a TDD Coding Dojo, where we try to practice pure TDD on simple problems. It occured to me however that the code which emerges from the unit tests isn't the most efficient. Now this is fine most of the time, but what if the code usage grows so that efficiency becomes a problem. I love the way the code emerges from unit testing, but is it possible to make the efficiency property emerge through further tests ? Here is a trivial example in ruby: prime factorization. I followed a pure TDD approach making the tests pass one after the other validating my original acceptance test (commented at the bottom). What further steps could I take, if I wanted to make one of the generic prime factorization algorithms emerge ? To reduce the problem domain, let's say I want to get a quadratic sieve implementation ... • bash alias doesn't carry over with sudo

  I'm curious if there's a way to get my .bash_profile to work when I sudo a program. For example, I have it set to alias emerge='emerge -av' so that I can install software, and it will always ask me if I want to proceed before downloading and installing. However I just noticed when I sudo emerge foo, it defaults to just the plain command emerge foo instead of emerge -av foo. Only thing that comes to mind to fix this is to also put the alias in root's .bash_profile, but I don't want to have to resort to that since I will always have to make changes in two places when I want to add stuff to my own profile. Is there another way around this that I'm unfamiliar with?

• Problem Solving vs. Solution Finding

  By enlarge, most developers fall into these two camps I will try to explain what I mean by way of example. A manager gives the developer a task that is communicated like this: “Figure out why control A is not loading on this form”. Now, right there it could be argued that the manager should probably have given better direction and said something more like: “Control A is not loading on the Form, fix it”. They might sound like the same thing to most people, but the first statement will have the developer problem solving the reason why it is failing. The second statement should have the developer looking for the solution to make it work, not focus on why it is broken. In the end, they might be the same thing, but I usually see the first approach take way longer than the second approach. The Problem Solver: The problem solver’s approach to fixing something that is broken is likely to take the error or behavior that is being observed and start to research it using a tool like Google, or any other search engine. 7/10 times this will yield results for the most common of issues. The challenge is in the other 30% of issues that will take the problem solver down the rabbit hole and cause them not to surface for days on end while every avenue is explored for the cause of the problem. In the end, they will probably find the cause of the issue and resolve it, but the cost can be days, or weeks of work. The Solution Finder: The solution finder’s approach to a problem will begin the same way the Problem Solver’s approach will. The difference comes in the more difficult cases. Rather than stick to the pure “This has to work so I am going to work with it until it does” approach, the Solution Finder will look for other ways to get the requirements satisfied that may or may not be using the original approach. For example. there are two area of an application of externally equivalent features, meaning that from a user’s perspective, the behavior is the same. So, say that for whatever reason, area A is now not working, but area B is working. The Problem Solver will dig in to see why area A is broken, where the Solution Finder will investigate to see what is the difference between the two areas and solve the problem by potentially working around it. The other notable difference between the two types of developers described is what point they reach before they re-emerge from their task. The problem solver will likely emerge with a triumphant “I have found the problem” where as the Solution Finder will emerge with the more useful “I have the solution”. Conclusion At the end of the day, users are what drives features in software development. With out users there is no need for software. In todays world of software development with so many tools to use, and generally tight schedules I believe that a work around to a problem that takes 8 hours vs. the more pure solution to the problem that takes 40 hours is a more fruitful approach.

What tools and commands do you use and consider helpful in administration of a Gentoo server? • Using gentoo, how does one stick -9999 ebuild to a specific svn revision?

  As an example given the django-9999 ebuild, to match the developers environment I need to checkout R12120 from trunk. Installing Django manually is not option due to package management reasons. But there is also no ebuild in portage for 1.2 beta versions. So I did the following: ESVN_OPTIONS="-r12120" emerge -1a django Which installed the required revision from svn. But this is cumbersome in a way. Is there some way to define this statically per ebuild, eg something like: DJANGO_SVN_REV="12120" in make.conf. This would be much cleaner in my eyes. Because next time I need to rebuild django for whatever reason, I need to remember: "Oh I wanted this to stick to a specific revision" and next question will be "err, f&!#$?%, what was it again?" What's the best way to go here? Keep in mind: Manually installing packages without package manager knowledge is no option Working around with manual emerge variable prefixing is no option Setting up a /etc/portage/package.env would be a way to go (as described here) but that seems pretty unsupported and kludgy to me and thus unpreferable Modifying make.conf would be a way to go Keeping the ebuild in an overlay would be an option

  I am having problems with KDE 'dropping' my keyboard. It happens periodically when using my gentoo box directly, but has become much worse when accessing via NX (from a Mac laptop). Some possibly irrelevant clues: it appears to happen more often when the system is under higher CPU load the mouse continues to work, but no windows will accept any kind of keyboard focus. kwin will not accept tabbing between windows. when working on the machine directly, I can ctrl-alt-F1 to get to a shell (obviously this does nothing over NX). so I think it is KDE and not xorg. am running kwin-4.3.5-r1, and KDE-4.3.5 generally. this problem definitely appeared after upgrading to kde-4.x, but I do not remember if it appeared in kde-4.2. sometimes the keyboard will reappear, but sometimes I have to kill my kde session. playing with accessibility options or window-focus-stealing options in system-settings under kde will often make the keyboard responsive again, only to drop it perhaps minutes later. I had read online this might be an evdev problem under X (again, I think this is KDE, not X, but will try anything). as a result, I have fiddled with my xorg.conf endlessly. I even deleted it entirely and let nvidia-xconfig have a stab at it, with no luck I am tearing my hair out over this. I have done emerge -e xorg-server and am right now doing emerge -e kwin, to rebuild all packages that might be relevant. no luck with the xorg-server rebuild. any help appreciated. thanks,

• Why does my hackintosh freeze coming out of sleep?

  I put OSx 10.1 on a Dell Mini 10v and everytime it goes to sleep, it either will not emerge from the sleep or if it does it's frozen. Is there something that I should be doing that I'm not? I went into the boot settings and it's set to load off of the Hard Disk drive and not the USB.

• Good Windows shell replacement [closed]

  I'm looking for a shell replacement for Windows, instead of Explorer. The features I'm looking at are: a task bar a tray bar an application launcher (I mostly use Launchy for that, but I need a launcher for those applications I forget the name...) The lighter and the easier to configure, the better! I'm currently using Emerge, but I found it a little buggy. I tried many others, but I never found something convincing.

• Who is Jeremiah Owyang?

  Q: What’s your current role and what career path brought you here? J.O.: I'm currently a partner and one of the founding team members at Altimeter Group.  I'm currently the Research Director, as well as wear the hat of Industry Analyst. Prior to joining Altimeter, I was an Industry Analyst at Forrester covering Social Computing, and before that, deployed and managed the social media program at Hitachi Data Systems in Santa Clara.  Around that time, I started a career blog called Web Strategy which focused on how companies were using the web to connect with customers --and never looked back. Q: As an industry analyst, what are you focused on these days? J.O.: There are three trends that I'm focused my research on at this time:  1) The Dynamic Customer Journey:  Individuals (both b2c and b2b) are given so many options in their sources of data, channels to choose from and screens to consume them on that we've found that at each given touchpoint there are 75 potential permutations.  Companies that can map this, then deliver information to individuals when they need it will have a competitive advantage and we want to find out who's doing this.  2) One of the sub themes that supports this trend is Social Performance.  Yesterday's social web was disparate engagement of humans, but the next phase will be data driven, and soon new technologies will emerge to help all those that are consuming, publishing, and engaging on the social web to be more efficient with their time through forms of automation.  As you might expect, this comes with upsides and downsides.  3) The Sentient World is our research theme that looks out the furthest as the world around us (even inanimate objects) become 'self aware' and are able to talk back to us via digital devices and beyond.  Big data, internet of things, mobile devices will all be this next set. Q: People cite that the line between work and life is getting more and more blurred. Do you see your personal life influencing your professional work? J.O.: The lines between our work and personal lives are dissolving, and this leads to a greater upside of being always connected and have deeper relationships with those that are not.  It also means a downside of society expectations that we're always around and available for colleagues, customers, and beyond.  In the future, a balance will be sought as we seek to achieve the goals of family, friends, work, and our own personal desires.  All of this is being ironically written at 430 am on a Sunday am.  Q: How can people keep up with what you’re working on? • Delving into design patterns, and what that means for the Oracle user experience

  By Kathy Miedema, Oracle Applications User Experience George Hackman, Senior Director, Applications User Experiences The Oracle Applications User Experience team has some exciting things happening around Fusion Applications design patterns. Because we’re hoping to have some new offerings soon (stay tuned with VoX to see what’s in the pipeline around Fusion Applications design patterns), now is a good time to talk more about what design patterns can do for the individual user as well as the entire company. George Hackman, Senior Director of Operations User Experience, says the first thing to note is that user experience is not just about the user interface. It’s about understanding how people do things, observing them, and then finding the patterns that emerge. The Applications UX team develops those patterns and then builds them into Oracle applications. What emerges, Hackman says, is a consistent, efficient user experience that promotes a productive workplace. Creating design patterns What is a design pattern in the context of enterprise software? “Every day, people use technology to get things done,” Hackman says. “They navigate a virtual world that reaches from enterprise to consumer apps, and from desktop to mobile. This virtual world is constantly under construction. New areas are being developed and old areas are being redone. As this world is being built and remodeled, efficient pathways and practices emerge. “Oracle's user experience team watches users navigate this world. We measure their productivity and ask them about their satisfaction. We take the most efficient, most productive pathways from the enterprise and consumer world and turn them into Oracle's user experience patterns.” Hackman describes the process as combining all of the best practices from every part of a user’s world. Members of the user experience team observe, analyze, design, prototype, and measure each work task to find the best possible pattern for a particular work flow. As the team builds the patterns, “we make sure they are fully buildable using Oracle technology,” Hackman said. “So customers know they can use these patterns. There’s no need to make something up from scratch, not knowing whether you can even build it.” Hackman says that creating something on a computer is a good example of a user experience pattern. “People are creating things all the time,” he says. “On the consumer side, they are creating documents. On the enterprise side, they are creating expense reports. On a mobile phone, they are creating contacts. They are using different apps like iPhone or Facebook or Gmail or Oracle software, all doing this creation process.” The Applications UX team starts their process by observing how people might create something. “We observe people creating things. We see the patterns, we analyze and document, then we apply them to our products. It might be different from phone to web browser, but we have these design patterns that create a consistent experience across platforms, and across products, too. The result for customers Oracle constantly improves its part of the virtual world, Hackman said. New products are created and existing products are upgraded. Because Oracle builds user experience design patterns, Oracle's virtual world becomes both more powerful and more familiar at the same time. Because of design patterns, users can navigate with ease as they embrace the latest technology – because it behaves the way they expect it to. This means less training and faster adoption for individual users, and more productivity for the business as a whole. Hackman said Oracle gives customers and partners access to design patterns so that they can build in the virtual world using the same best practices. Customers and partners can extend applications with a user experience that is comfortable and familiar to their users. For businesses that are integrating different Oracle applications, design patterns are key. The user experience created in E-Business Suite should be similar to the user experience in Fusion Applications, Hackman said. If a user is transitioning from one application to the other, it shouldn’t be difficult for them to do their work. With design patterns, it isn’t. “Oracle user experience patterns are the building blocks for the virtual world that ensure productivity, consistency and user satisfaction,” Hackman said. “They are built for the enterprise, but incorporate the best practices from across the virtual world. They empower productivity and facilitate social interaction. When you build with patterns, you get all the end-user benefits of less training / retraining from the finished product. • Future-proofing myself when learning to program.

  I want to learn to program in a 'future-proof' manner, if you like. Whilst Windows dominates the desktop OS marketplace (for now), obviously there is a lot of value in learning its languages/frameworks/API's and so on - this might be subject to change as new devices emerge or Windows shoots itself in the foot (over-friendly previews of Windows 8 don't look too appealing...). Would I be right in thinking that having a solid knowledge of C/C++ for back-end logic/low level programming and the like, combined with an extremely portable language like Java for GUI's and so on, would be a good basis for software development that will prove useful on the most amount of systems? - I'm talking desktop PC's, tablets, phones.

The first instance has monit running which monitors a single process and some system resources and functions great. In the second instance, monit runs but quits right away.
