  • ubuntu hardrive repartition without uninstalling ubuntu or windows 7 and losing data of hardrive

    I have and asus r500v with 750 gb gpt system uefi motherboard core i7 3610qm, nvidia geforce gt, with ubuntu and w7 dual boot, I had problems installing ubuntu because of the grub but I fix it with https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub2/+bug/807801, but I still have the problem of "warning: the partition is misaligned by 3072 bytes. this may result iin very poor performance. Repartitioning is suggested" in every linux partitioin I made and my 750 gb is not being used at the maximun capacity it only uses 698 gb. I want to make partitions so that the warning doesnt show up and I can use the maximum capacity of the HDD, as I did with another dual boot laptop (compaq presario cq40).     How do i find the throughput of a CPU and the Hardisk on an open solaris machine. Using MPstat or iostat. I'm having a hard time identifying the throughput if it is given at all in the commands output. Eg. in mpstat there is very little explanation as to what the columns mean http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816-5166/mpstat-1m?l=en&a=view&q=syscl+mpstat I've been using the syscl column divided by time interval to find the throughput but to be honest i have no idea what a system call truelly is.   • how to install 13.04 on a partitioned hardrive

    First, not a computer literate person, not even a novice- so please use small words. I recently made the switch to ubuntu, it came preloaded on my new laptop that I order from a big tech dot com site. The version on it is 12.04 (i think) and 64bit. This system has a lot that I like but it is quirky for me to say the least. Apparently I have held broken packages and have no way of knowing how to find them. I discovered this when trying to download (from software center) VLC so that I could watch some movies I had on an external hard-drive. Unmet dependencies error and held broken package errors abound while trying to fix the problem. Ive scoured this site and other and followed almost all the suggestions to a T but still I am unable to fix anything. My computer is partitioned (but I don't even know how to get to the otherside so to speak). I would like to know; can I put the newer 13.04 OS on one side of the partition and then delete the older version on the other side? or, can I install 13.04 over the existing 12.04? What would I need to do this? An obstacle that I have is this, I am currently serving in Afghanistan so going someplace to buy something or running down to a computer store for service support is out of the question. I very much appreciate your help, cause right now this computer is nothing more than a word processor, which would be fine if all i wanted was a word processor. Thanks in advance.

  • External Hardrive Not Reconized on Windows 7 at all

    I Have a NextStar 2/5" from Vantec and its an 80G HD. I have used it many times on windows xp and it works fine. We just recently upgraded to windows 7 home premium and when I plug it in it beeps many times. I've tried all the USB plugs in my computer and its not those plugs. Haven't tried eSata because it uses a weird cable to plug into. People told me that when it beeps everything is corrupted, but works fine on xp. I tried installing the drivers online from their website and when I try it asks me to put in a cd which makes no sense because they are online drivers. When I go into device manager nothing comes up, it just acts like the HD is invisible. The beeping will stop eventually as it is plugged in, but with no result.

    Hi, Long story: My MacBook's hard drive failed one year ago, just a month after its warranty ended or: a year and a month after I bought it. After about ten phone calls to Apple's service, they agreed to extend the warranty for another year, so that I got it replaced free of charge. In the mean time, I got to know that many MacBook users that experience/report hard drive failures. Every reported crash was preceded by a slowdown of system performance, an increased occurrence of the spinning beach ball wait courser, and frequent crashes of applications that used to run very robust until then. It happened (as far as I know) with MacBooks from 2006/2007. All these MacBooks additionally suffer from a recurring wearing down of their "top case". Many heavy users had to replace their HDDs three time since 2006/2007 resulting in an head crash, making it impossible to recover data (diagnosis of recovery specialists) in most but not all cases HDD was Seagate (doesn't necessarily have to be the cause, if majority of the MacBook charge contained Seagate drives) And right now (one year after my first disk crash), these symptoms are cumulating on my system, again ... Short version: prevalent hard drive failure on MacBook charge from 2006/2007 (i.e. 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Due) I am looking for any (preferable open source) tool for checking the hard drive condition, especially to detect the known "MacBook problem". So, that I can replace the disk on time. If any Mac user found a solution to prevent the repeated failure of heir hard drive, I would be very glad to get to known it. I really enjoy my old MacBook, but I hate to get interrupted every year by an HDD crash. BTW, the issue is already in discussion for a long time, but there seems to be no solution, so far.     Hi, Friend of mine broke his Windows (doesn't boot). I will probably have to reinstall OS. I want to mount his hard drive in my OS to beck up some important files. He sad he uses Outlook express, but he Use Vista so I'm not sure it's Vistas Mail Client or Outlook. What files I have to copy to backup mail and adders book from Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail? Is it any good program for doing it automatically (for Linux or Windows)? If there are tools or special procedures for other mail clients (for example Thunderbird) you can also name them to make this question more generic.

When she plugged in the USB in her lap top, the driver cannot be recognized by the smart ware software. While she was doing a back up of her files, McAfee was running in the background. Since the backup was taking so long to finish, she decided to pause it. She tried to delete the partially backed up files, but instead, she accidentally deleted the entire file in the folder including the pre-installed software. Now, when she tries to start up the MyPassport, the smart ware doesn't show up anymore. Can someone please give us advice what can she do about this? Thank you.

  • Ubuntu version on external hardrive that shows up in GRUB?

    I was wondering, is it possible to have Ubuntu installed on an external harddrive and still have it show up in GRUB? Of course, you wouldn't be able boot the other HDD OS unless it was connected, but would this work? I googled 'external HDD OS show in GRUB' and 'have external HDD show up in GRUB' but they didn't bring up anything. Does anyone have any resources to point me to? I can see this as being useful for testing out new releases or having multiple OSs installed without having to go through the BIOS boot choice. Thanks!

Then it comes to the partition/harddrive selection screen, I only see my usb flash stick. I'm at my wits end with this problem. I need to install xp.

    I have a Compaq mini 110c-1100dx and I'm having a terrible time trying to reinstall windows. I dont have a external CD drive and REALLY dont want to pay HP 200bux for one. so, I've been TRYING to reinstall WinXP from a flashdrive and I have it to the point where the XP installation gets past the Agreement, but then the netbooks hard drive is not showing up, it's jus giving me the option to install WInXP onto the flash drive, registering as C:. I've tried using nLite to add extra drivers to the WinXP "cd" but I dont think I have the correct HD drivers and I am stuck. ANY help at all be great

    We cannot seem to install Ubuntu Server with USB as it reboots when I hit 'enter' for 'Install Ubuntu Server' option. My friend wants to try setting up a server so; we downloaded Ubuntu Server 10.04.4 we created a boot CD and installed ubuntu server no problem at all. But then the problem arose the hardrive we wanted to use is a 1tb sata drive and the computer orginally has 40gb IDE. So I bought a Sata to IDE and IDE to Sata converter from: http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/Product/52926/IDE-to-SATA-converter---Converts-IDE-HDD-to-SATA-inc-sata-data-and-power-cables Unfortunately this converter means I cannot plug in the IDE cable meaning I only have one IDE connection i.e CD drive has to be disconnected for the 1tb sata Hardrive to be connected. So now the 1tb drive is connected, powered it on opened the bios to make sure the hdd appeared it did as ST3ASDAPFKG (somthing like that). Fortunately the computer supports USB booting, so I read ubuntu server usb install instructions I tried: Startup Disk Creator & Unebootin Startup Disk Creator made the usb bootable with the 'ubuntu-10.04.4-server-i386.iso' All looked fine stuck the usb drive in, booted the machine up and I am quickly presented with ubuntu language choice. I hit enter to select English then I am presented with: Install Ubuntu Server, Install Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, Check Disk for defects, test memory, Boot from first hard disk, Rescue a broken system I can move up and down the menu fine everything seems ok, I select 'Install Ubuntu Server', computer just hangs and screen either goes blank or locks. So I rebooted the computer loads the same menus fine, I select 'Install Ubuntu Server' hit 'enter' and the computer just restarts then brings me back to the same menu. hmmm Then I tried choosing the rest of the options separately: Install Ubuntu Server, Install Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, Check Disk for defects, test memory, Boot from first hard disk, Rescue a broken system computer just restarts and back to the same ubuntu menu every-time. Grrrr At this point I wish I actually new how to command line install or something but I don't have a clue how to do that. So I tried hitting 'f6' for 'other options' and I tried them all in various combinations and individually. No Luck: (Expert mode, acpi=off, noapic, nolapic, edd=on, nodmraid, nomodeset, Free Software only) At this point I am wondering if it is a bios setting causing problems, I tried turning every option in there on off that I don't understand. No Luck. I then discovered by accident if you hit esc in the ubuntu install menu it says "you are leaving the graphical boot menu and starting the text mode interface" I hit 'Ok'. Next a prompt pops up saying 'boot:' One time it responded when I typed somthing with 'Cannot find kernal image (something like that but since then it just restarts when I hit enter in that prompt). I had a browse on the net and found someone suggesting removing quiet from install command for 'Install Ubuntu Server'. Made no difference at all just reboots... Orginal boot options noprompt cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persistent file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu-server.seed initrd=/install/initrd.gz quiet -- Modified boot options noprompt cdrom-detect/try-usb=true persistent file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu-server.seed initrd=/install/initrd.gz -- Still I cannot install Ubuntu Server by USB as it, reboots when I hit 'enter' for 'Install Ubuntu Server' option. This is a real pain as we cannot take the 1tb Sata Hardrive and swap it for IDE to be able to use the cd drive. Why is is it so hard to install ubuntu server with usb? I have wasted a full day and half on this really frustrated any help would be amazing! I know the answers out there just seems a bit illusive at the moment!     I have created a truecrypt container (100GB) to store very important files with vital information hidden on my hardrive running Fedora Linux OS. Now, I want to move the container to portable hardrive. From what I read so far, you should be able to do it easily like any other file. However, I am running into problem. Fedora won't let me. It keeps giving me "Permission denied" error. I think I need to login as a root or superuser, but how do you do that on Fedora. What am I doing wrong?
