  • Music While Coding [closed]

    - by inspectorG4dget
Hi SO, Generally, while I'm coding, I prefer to listen to some background music. Nothing that'll get me distracted, but something that'll help keep the rhythm and isn't counterproductive when I need to stop coding to debug or to think of a way to solve a small problem that stands in the way of progress. Now, I have read some similar questions on reddit and on SO - specifically: which songs do you find most productive to listen to while coding, Music while programming and more. Sadly a lot of these questions were closed as off-topic, etc. But (1) I don't think this question is off-topic and I think that a lot of programmers can benefit from it. (2) It's a real question. I really want to know what music you guys would recommend because music helps when I'm coding. It's sad that SO: Music to listen to while coding cannot be found and this isn't of much help. I hope this doesn't get closed. PS: I want to turn this into a community wiki, but I don't seem to know how. I'd appreciate any help. Thank you, all. In response to kirk.burleson's comment: In case the question isn't already clear, I'm asking for recommendations/opinions of music to listen to while coding. I would like to know what you listen to when you code so that I can try it too. I am running out of good "coding music" and this is a problem for me because good "coding music" helps me code better.

  • Dealing with an Idiot [closed]

    - by inspectorG4dget
I'm a 4th year University Computer Science student, and I have this problem, that I don't seem to be able to find a straight answer to: As a 4th year computer science student, I spend more time in the computer lab on campus, than even my own home. This means that getting along with everyone else here is very important to me. In most cases, this is not an issue because my interactions with almost all the people here fall into one of the following categories: Let me help you, junior Hi fellow student in a course I'm taking, I'm having trouble with this assignment question. Can you give me a hint as to how you solved it? Hi fellow student in a course I'm taking, This is how I solved the problem that you're stuck on. Hope it helps Hi fellow student, I noticed that you're working on a project, using a library that I'm interested in. Can we setup a time so I can learn about this library from you? This model of interaction works very well for me. However, there is one fellow student, who manages to make my life hell beyond all of this (his name is not important, let's just call him "Sam"). He seems to be always (pardon my crass description) high and completely unwilling to contribute to a constructive, academic conversation. He's a pretty smart guy, but just comes across as (I hate to say something like this about a fellow student, but) an imbecile. He also has ignorant opinions on important topics, some of which pertain to my specialization (AI, NLP, etc), and when I try to explain to him why he's wrong, all he does is insult me and put me in a foul mood. I have tried ignoring him (sitting somewhere else in the lab, headphones, etc), but he seems to like doing this because he approaches me and no amount of "leave me alone" seems to do the trick. Can anyone please suggest to me how to deal with this man in a civil way? Thank you

  • Replay UDP Packet Capture

    - by inspectorG4dget
I have a UDP packet capture which was streamed from Port1 on IP1 to Port2 on IP2 on network N1. I need to replay these packets on another network N2 from Port3 on IP3 to Port4 on IP4. I need to know what software to use in order to do this and how I would go about replaying these packets so that I can detect/capture them again in N2. So far, I've tried strictly replaying these packets using a program called Colasoft Packet Player, with little luck. I'd appreciate any help on this. Thank you in advance

  • `sh` access denied over ssh connection

    - by inspectorG4dget
I have an ubuntu server and a windows XP client running Cygwin. The server ssh's into the client and tries to execute a shell script with some params, with the following command: ssh [email protected]_ADDR 'sh /home/user/project/clientside 2 5 7 6 9 5 7 IP_ADDR' where IP_ADDR is the IP address of client. However, while doing so, I get the following error: Access is denied. Thinking this might be a user permissions error, I tried running sh /home/user/project/clientside 2 5 7 6 9 5 7 IP_ADDR on the client, on Cygwin, while logged in as user. This works as expected. Then I thought that this might be an error with the login that I use when I ssh into the client. So I executed this instead: ssh [email protected]_ADDR 'whoami' and got back user. This happened even after I did chmod -R 777 /home/user/project on the client, in Cygwin. For kicks, I got on Cygwin on the client and did ssh localhost and manually executed sh /home/user/project/clientside 2 5 7 6 9 5 7 IP_ADDR. This worked as expected. However, when I did ssh IP_ADDR from Cygwin and did ssh localhost and manually executed sh /home/user/project/clientside 2 5 7 6 9 5 7 IP_ADDR, I get the same Access is denied. error. Why is this happening? How can I fix this? By the way, both the server and the client have each other's rsa public key for passwordless ssh

  • Eclipse Juno Switch Editor in Order

    - by inspectorG4dget
In case it matters: OS: Mac OS X Lion (10.7.4) Eclipse: Juno, Build id: 20120614-1722 I have several files open in my eclipse workspace as tabs. The default shortcuts for previous and next editors are ?F6 and ?shiftF6. I know how to change these shortcuts, that's not the issue. However, what I want to do, is switch between editors in the way in which they're ordered in the tab bar. Currently, the editors change in order of last used/viewed. So, if I had three files (A, B and C in order) open and I'm currently editing A and I edited B last, when I use the shortcut for "Previous Editor", it takes me to B instead of C (and vice versa). Is there any way for me to get this functionality out of eclipse (if so, how)? Thank you

  • Handle Arbitrary Exception, Print Default Exception Message

    - by inspectorG4dget
I have a program, a part of which executes a loop. During the execution of this loop, there are exceptions. Obviously, I would like my program to run without errors, but for the sake of progress, I would like the program to execute over the entire input and not stop when an exception is thrown. The easiest way to do this would be by implementing and except block. However, when I do this, it excepts all exceptions and continues with the program and I never get to see the exception message (which I need in order to debug). Is there a way to except any arbitrary exception and be able to print out the exception message in the except block?

  • Why does the interpretted order seem different from what I expect?

    - by inspectorG4dget
    I have a problem that I have not faced before: It seems that the order of interpretation in my program is somehow different from what I expect. I have written a small Twitter client. It takes a few seconds for my program to actually post a tweet after I click the "GO" button (which can also be activated by hitting ENTER on the keyboard). I don't want to click multiple times within this time period thinking that I hadn't clicked it the first time. Therefore, when the button is clicked, I would like the label text to display something that tells me that the button has been clicked. I have implemented this message by altering the label text before I send the tweet across. However, for some reason, the message does not display until the tweet has been attempted. But since I have a confirmation message after the tweet, I never get to see this message and my original problem goes unsolved. I would really appreciate any help. Here is the relevant code: class SimpleTextBoxForm(Form): def init(self): # set window properties self.Text = "Tweeter" self.Width = 235 self.Height = 250 #tweet away self.label = Label() self.label.Text = "Tweet Away..." self.label.Location = Point(10, 10) self.label.Height = 25 self.label.Width = 200 #get the tweet self.tweetBox = TextBox() self.tweetBox.Location = Point(10, 45) self.tweetBox.Width = 200 self.tweetBox.Height = 60 self.tweetBox.Multiline = True self.tweetBox.WordWrap = True self.tweetBox.MaxLength = 140; #ask for the login ID self.askLogin = Label() self.askLogin.Text = "Login:" self.askLogin.Location = Point(10, 120) self.askLogin.Height = 20 self.askLogin.Width = 60 self.login = TextBox() self.login.Text= "" self.login.Location = Point(80, 120) self.login.Height = 40 self.login.Width = 100 #ask for the password self.askPass = Label() self.askPass.Text = "Password:" self.askPass.Location = Point(10, 150) self.askPass.Height = 20 self.askPass.Width = 60 # display password box with character hiding self.password = TextBox() self.password.Location = Point(80, 150) self.password.PasswordChar = "x" self.password.Height = 40 self.password.Width = 100 #submit button self.button1 = Button() self.button1.Text = 'Tweet' self.button1.Location = Point(10, 180) self.button1.Click += self.update self.AcceptButton = self.button1 #pack all the elements of the form self.Controls.Add(self.label) self.Controls.Add(self.tweetBox) self.Controls.Add(self.askLogin) self.Controls.Add(self.login) self.Controls.Add(self.askPass) self.Controls.Add(self.password) self.Controls.Add(self.button1) def update(self, sender, event): if not self.password.Text: self.label.Text = "You forgot to enter your password..." else: self.tweet(self.tweetBox.Text, self.login.Text, self.password.Text) def tweet(self, msg, login, password): self.label.Text = "Attempting Tweet..." # this should be executed before sending the tweet is attempted.   • PROLOG all different

    - by inspectorG4dget
Hello SO, I have a very weird problem with PROLOG. I have used it before, but it's been a while and I'm rusty. I have a list of variables and I need to ensure that none of them are the same. I have tried: use_module(library(bounds)). all_different(A, B, C, D, 6, 8). However, when I try this, I get an error saying that all_different/6 is undefined. How can I go about solving this issue? Is there any library function that I can call directly for this? I am VERY stuck and would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

  • processing: convert int to byte

    - by inspectorG4dget
Hello SO, I'm trying to convert an int into a byte in Processing 1.0.9. This is the snippet of code that I have been working with: byte xByte = byte(mouseX); byte yByte = byte(mouseY); byte setFirst = byte(128); byte resetFirst = byte(127); xByte = xByte | setFirst; yByte = yByte >> 1; port.write(xByte); port.write(yByte); According to the Processing API, this should work, but I keep getting an error at xByte = xByte | setFirst; that says: cannot convert from int to byte I have tried converting 128 and 127 to they respective hex values (0x80 and 0x7F), but that didn't work either. I have tried everything mentioned in the API as well as some other blogs, but I feel like I'm missing something very trivial. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

  • Why doesn't 'Q' unify in this PROLOG program

    - by inspectorG4dget
Hello SO, I am writing a PROLOG program in which the variable of interest (Q) refuses to unify. I have gotten around this with a hacky solution (include a write statement). But there has to be a way to make this unify, but for the love of me, I am not able to figure it out. I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance. Here is my code (I have annotated wherever I have excluded code for brevity) :- use_module(library(bounds)). :- use_module(library(lists)). solve([17],Q,_,_,_):- write(Q). %this is the hacky workaround solve(L,Q,1,3,2) :- jump(L,Q,N,1,3,2,R), solve(N,R,S,D,M), member([S|[D|[M|[]]]],[[1, 3, 2], [1, 9, 4], [2, 10, 5] this list contains 76 items - all of which are lists of length 3. I have omitted them here for the sake of brevity]). % there are about 75 other definitions for solve, all of which are structured exactly the same. The only difference is that the numbers in the input parameters will be different in each definition jump(L,Q,N,S,D,M,R):- member(S,L), not(member(D,L)), member(M,L), delete(L,S,X), delete(X,M,Y), append(Y,[D],N), append(Q,[[S,D]],R). cross_sol(Q) :- solve([5,9,10,11,17,24],[],S,D,M), member([S,D,M], [ I have edited out this list here for the sake of brevity. It is the same list found in the definition of solve ]). For some reason, Q does not unify. Please help!

  • Magic function `bash ` not found

    - by inspectorG4dget
I have a bunch of simulations that I want to run on a high-performance cluster, on which I should make reservations to get computing time. Since the reservations are bounded by time, I am developing an automation script that I can scp into the cluster and run. This script will then download the relevant simulation files, run them, and upload the results. Part of this automation script is in bash (cp, scp, etc) and the rest is in python. In order to develop this automation, I am using an IPython notebook. So far, I've coded all the python automation stuff in my IPython notebook and am trying to write the bash part of it now. However, it seems that the magic %%bash doesn't work in my IPython notebook. I get the following error when I have this code in my cell: Cell %%bash echo hi Error File "<ipython-input-22-62ec98e35224>", line 3 echo hi ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax On a whim, I tried this: Cell %%bash print "hi" Error hi ERROR: Magic function `bash` not found. So I tried this with %%system, %%! and %%shell. But none of those work; they all give me the same error. Why is this happening? How can I fix this? • Visual Studio 2010 Language Support

    - by inspectorG4dget
Hello SO, I want to be able to develop code using Visual Studio 2010. I just got VS2010 and I'm not able to get the languages I want on it. The main reason that I'm asking this is that I'm trying to migrate to ONE IDE that does it all for me. Thus far eclipse has been doing a good job, but I've been informed that VS2010 is better and I'm trying to get into the groove of that standard So my question is two-fold. I am not able to find a complete list of languages supported by VS2010. What are these languages? How can I get VS2010 support for: a. Python/IronPython b. C/C++/C#/XNA c. Java My Googling has given me no promising/definitive results. I'd really appreciate any help.

  • How does R treat positional arguments

    - by inspectorG4dget
I'm a python guy and very new to R (so far, all I've done is copy-paste code and screen-shot the resulting, graph). I would now like to actually learn the language so that I can draw useful plots (right now, I am trying to plot this). In attempting my first plot, I came across this function call: sets_options("universe", seq(from = 0, to = 25, by = 0.1)) Now, I would like to know if I can achieve the same result by calling sets_options("universe", seq(0, 25, 0.1)) The help page for seq doesn't speak to this specifically (or I'm not reading it correctly), so I was hoping someone could shed some light on how R handles positional arguments I tried calling the function that way in R and it worked (no syntax errors, etc), but I don't know how to test the output of that function, so I'm forced to ask here
