  • 5 reason why you should upgrade to new iPad (3rd generation)

    - by Gopinath
Apple released the new iPad, 3rd generation, couple of days ago and they will be available in stores from March 16 onwards.  It’s the best tablet available in the market and for first time buyers it’s a no brainer to choose it. What about the iPad owners? Should they upgrade their iPad 2 to the new iPad? This is the question on the lips of most of the iPad owners. In this post we will provide you 5 reasons why you should upgrade your iPad, if more than two reasons are convincing then you should upgrade to the new iPad. Retina display – The best display ever made for mobile device, a game changer The new iPad comes with Retina display with screen resolution of 2048 x 1536, which is twice the resolution of iPad 2. Undoubtedly the iPad 3’s display is the best display ever made for a mobile device and it’s a game changer. With better resolution on iPad 3 eBook reading is going to be a pleasure with clear and crisp text Watching HD movies on iPad is going to be unbelievably good The new Games targeted for Retina display are going to be more realistic and needless to explain the pleasure of playing such games Graphic artists and photo editors get a professional on screen rendering support to create beautiful graphics 2x Faster & 2x Memory – Better Games and powerful Apps The new iPad is more powerful with 2x faster graphics and 2x more memory. Apple claims that the A5x processor of new iPad is 2x faster than iPad 2 and 4x faster than the best graphic chips available from other vendors. The RAM of  new iPad  is upgraded to 1 GB compared from 512 MB of iPad 2. With the fast processor and more memory, Apps and games are going to be blazing fast. 4G Internet – Browse the web at the speeds of 42 MB/sec Half of the iPad owners are frequent commuters who access internet over cellular networks, the new iPad’s 4G LTE is going to be a big boom for their  high data access needs. With the new iPad’s 4G LTE connectivity you can browse the web at 42 MB/sec and it mean you can watch a HD video without buffering issues. iPad 2 comes with 3G network support and it’s browsing speeds are way less than the new iPad. 5MP Camera – HD Movie Recording & gorgeous Photography iPad 2 has a 0.7 mega pixel camera and the new iPad comes with 5 megapixels camera. That is a huge boost for hobbyist  photographers and videographers. With the new iPad you can shoot gorgeous photos and 1080p HD video. The iSight camera of new iPad uses advanced optics with features like auto exposure, auto focus and face detection up to 10 faces. • Reusable calendar popup like iCalendar/scheduler on iPad? Not a date picker wheel.

    - by MikeN
I need a date picker that shows an actual calendar (similar to the built-in calendar feature on the iPad.) Is there a reusuable widget? How could I easily implement one? The date picker wheel is terrible because it doesn't show you the day of the week (Sun, Mon, Tue...) and isn't really needed on the iPad where you have enough room to show a calendar which is a very user friendly way of letting someone pick a date (it is mentally easy to find the third Tuesday from today.)

  • Best way to programmatically detect iPad/iPhone hardware

    - by Adam Eberbach
The reason I need to find out is that on an iPad, a UIPickerView has the same height in landscape orientation as it does in portrait. On an iPhone it is different. The iPad programming guide introduces an "idiom" value to UIDevice: UIDevice* thisDevice = [UIDevice currentDevice]; if(thisDevice.userInterfaceIdiom == UIUserInterfaceIdiomPad) { // iPad } else { // iPhone } which works OK while you're in iPad (3.2) but not iPhone (3.1.3) - so it looks like there also needs to be an ifdef to conditionally compile that check, like: #if __IPHONE_OS_VERSION_MIN_REQUIRED >= 30200 UIDevice* thisDevice = [UIDevice currentDevice]; if(thisDevice.userInterfaceIdiom == UIUserInterfaceIdiomPad) { // etc. } #endif To me that's starting to look very clumsy. What's a better way?

  • iPad: How To Soft Reset, Restore Factory Settings And Erase All Content

    - by Gopinath
iPad is an amazing gadget from Apple and everyone of us loves to own it. If you are a lucky one to own an iPad here are some basic troubleshooting features that you should be aware. There is no doubt that iPad is an amazing gadget, but similar to other electronic gadgets it refuses to work now and then. When your iPad hangs or refuses to respond you can soft reset it by holding the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. This just reset your iPad and it’s similar to force rebooting your PC. All your settings and data are untouched during this process. The embedded video below shows how to turn off and soft reset an iPad. If iPad Doesn’t Work After Soft Reset – Restore Factory Settings Soft reset should resolve most of the iPad issues like hanging, not responding properly, etc. In case even if your iPad does not work properly after soft reset you can try reset all the setting to factory defaults by navigating through the Home screen > Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.  This will reset all your settings and other iPad customizations to factory defaults but your data(images, documents, apps, etc.) are left untouched. How To Erase All Content Of iPad You may ask why should I erase all the content of iPad? Well may be you are willing to sell it off on eBay by erasing all the content or you want start afresh or some other reason. It is easy to reset all the settings of iPad as well as wipe out all content by navigating through Home screen > General > Reset >  “Erase All Content and Settings.” CC Image credit flickr/korosirego This article titled,iPad: How To Soft Reset, Restore Factory Settings And Erase All Content, was originally published at Tech Dreams. • Problem with video playback on iPad with MPMoviePlayerViewController

    - by Symo
Hello everybody... I have been fighting some code for about a week, and am hoping that someone else may have experienced this problem and can point me in the right direction. I am using the MPMoviePlayerViewController to play a video on the iPad. The primary problem is that it works FLAWLESSLY on the iPad Simulator, but will not play at all on the iPad. I have tried re-encoding the video to make sure that isn't an issue. The video I'm using is currently a 480x360 video encoded with H.264 Basline 3.0 with AAC/LC audio. The video plays fine on the iPhone, and also does play through Safari on the iPad. The video actually loads, and you can scrub through the video with the scrubber bar and see that it is there. The frames actually display, but just will not play. If you click play, it just immediately stops. Even when I have mp.moviePlayer.shouldAutoplay=YES set, you can see the player attempt to play, but only for a split second (maybe 1 frame?). I have tried just adding view with the following code: in .h ------ MPMoviePlayerViewController *vidViewController; @property (readwrite, retain) MPMoviePlayerViewController *vidViewController; in .m ------ MPMoviePlayerViewController *mp=[[MPMoviePlayerViewController alloc] initWithContentURL:[NSURL URLWithString:videoURL]]; [mp shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:YES]; mp.moviePlayer.scalingMode=MPMovieScalingModeAspectFit; mp.moviePlayer.shouldAutoplay=YES; mp.moviePlayer.controlStyle=MPMovieControlStyleFullscreen; [videoURL release]; self.vidViewController = mp; [mp release]; [self.view addSubview:vidViewController.view]; float w = self.view.frame.size.width; float h = w * 0.75; self.vidViewController.view.frame = CGRectMake(0, 0, w, h); I have also just tried to do a: [self presentMoviePlayerViewControllerAnimated:self.vidViewController]; which I actually can not get to orient properly...always shows up in Portrait and almost completely off the screen on the bottom, and the app is only intended to run in either of the Landscape views... If anybody needs more info, just let me know. I'm about at my wits end on this. ANY help will be GREATLY appreciated.

  • convert orientation vec3 to a rotation matrix

    - by lapin
I've got a normalized vec3 that represents an orientation. Each frame of animation, an object's orientation changes slightly, so I add a delta vector to the orientation vector and then normalize to find the new orientation. I'd like to convert the vec3 that represents an orientation into a rotation matrix that I can use to orient my object. If it helps, my object is a cone, and I'd like to rotate it about the pointy end, not from its center :) PS I know I should use quaternions because of the gimbal lock problem. If someone can explain quats too, that'd be great :)

  • ipad SplitView Orientation in DetailView

    - by nishantcm
    I am using this code in the DetailView.m of a splitview app. Now the orientation changes occur only when the device is rotated. The detection does not take place when the app is launched. I also get this warning warning: 'RootViewController' may not respond to '-adjustViewsForOrientation:' What change do I need to make the app adjust the orientation code when the app is launched. (void) willRotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)toInterfaceOrientation duration:(NSTimeInterval)duration { [self adjustViewsForOrientation:toInterfaceOrientation]; } (void) adjustViewsForOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)orientation { if (orientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft || orientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight) { detailDescriptionLabel.center = CGPointMake(235.0f, 42.0f); bigthumbImageView.center = CGPointMake(355.0f, 70.0f); } else if (orientation == UIInterfaceOrientationPortrait || orientation == UIInterfaceOrientationPortraitUpsideDown) { detailDescriptionLabel.center = CGPointMake(160.0f, 52.0f); bigthumbImageView.center = CGPointMake(275.0f, 80.0f); } }

  • How to Force iPhone to Check Orientation

    - by Shannon A.
Here's the problem: View Controller #1 only runs in the two landscape orientations. View Controller #2 runs in any orientation. When view controller #2 is pushed on top of view controller #1 (using presentModalViewController:animated:, as it happens), there's no check for orientation. Instead, VC #2 just assumes the orientation is whichever landscape orientation VC #1 is currently in. This behavior is incorrect if the user happens to be holding the iPhone in a portrait orientation, despite the fact that he's viewing VC #1 where it's not supported. This can easily happen during startup, so it's not just a theoretical question. Is there any way to tell VC #2 to recheck what it's orientation actually is? If so, where would it be best placed? viewDidLoad?

  • Playing iPad to iPad Wifi games over PPTP VPN

    - by Pez Cuckow
I'm trying to use a VPN to play iPad to iPad Wifi (Local) games over the internet. Normally you open the game on both iPad's, connect to the same Wifi point and they can "see" and speak to each other. I figure using a VPN I can put them both on the same network (either both on the VPN or one on the "real" network and one on the VPN). On my router I've set up PPTP VPN with the ip range 192.168.1.2-50, where the PC's on the real local network are assigned 192.168.1.100+ When I connect one of the iPads to the VPN, using an external WiFi network (BT Openzone) I can ping it as expected (from any machine on the local network). However the iPad's cannot "see" each other and none of the Wifi-Wifi games work. I've also tried connecting both iPad's to the same VPN, with the result the same. All machines on the local network (and those on the VPN) can ping the iPad's but none of the Wifi to Wifi games work. I've set both iPads to send all trafic over the VPN and if I check their external IP's they match that of the real network. Does anyone know how to fix this? And/or what is causing it? Or what further debug information I can provide? Note: I don't feel this is iPad specific so would prefer if this isn't moved to a Apple SuperUser equivalent

  • Test iPhone app on iPad mini?

    - by Devfly
I have developed an iPhone app, right now I only need a device for testing. I have 300$, and two choices - second hand iPhone 4, or brand new iPad mini. The better choice obviously is the iPad, but is it sufficient for testing iPhone apps on? On the iPad, iPhone apps can run just fine in 2X mode, but are there any differences between the app performance on iPhone and iPad (except the chipset). Should I test my app on actual iPhone, or the iPad will suffice? My app is RSS reader, not some game, so I think everything will be fine with testing on iPad mini. If I buy the iPad I will find some friends iPhone 4/3gs running iOS 5.1 (because my app's deployment target is 5.1, and the iPad comes with 6.0), but of course I can't extensively test on this iPhone. Thank you!

  • iPad start in Landscape receive only touch within 768x768

    - by user1307179
    It works perfect fine when starting in portrait and also works when you rotate from portrait to landscape and back. It does not work when starting in landscape. But then it works when you rotate from landscape to portrait and back. In landscape starting mode, the screen does not respond with any touch where screen coordinateX greater than 768. What happens in code is, I use status bar orientation to determine original orientation and rotate each view manually. The views display correctly but does not receive touch properly. Then my root view controller will get called when ipad start rotating with: - (void)willRotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)toInterfaceOrientation duration:(NSTimeInterval)duration which will rotate every subviews. Root controller: - (void)loadView { self.view = [[UIView alloc]init ]; //initialize child views [self willRotateToInterfaceOrientation:0 duration:0]; } - (void)willRotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)toInterfaceOrientation duration:(NSTimeInterval)duration { if ([model isLandscape]) { self.view.frame = CGRectMake(0, 0, 1024, 768-80); } else { self.view.frame = CGRectMake(0, 0, 768, 1024-80); } //rotate child views } My code [model isLandscape] works so I don't need to provide details as to how it works but here are the code anyway: - (bool)isLandscape { if (orientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft || orientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight) return true; else return false; } -(id) init { [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:@selector(orientationChanged:) name:UIDeviceOrientationDidChangeNotification object:nil]; } - (void)orientationChanged:(NSNotification *)notification { UIInterfaceOrientation curOrientation = [[UIDevice currentDevice] orientation]; if (curOrientation == UIDeviceOrientationPortrait || curOrientation == UIDeviceOrientationPortraitUpsideDown || curOrientation == UIDeviceOrientationLandscapeLeft || curOrientation == UIDeviceOrientationLandscapeRight) { orientation = curOrientation; ((AppDelegate*)([UIApplication sharedApplication].delegate)).savedOrientationForRestart = orientation; NSLog(@"changed"); } } -(void)validateOrientation { //first time when initializing orientation UIInterfaceOrientation curOrientation = [[UIDevice currentDevice] orientation]; if (curOrientation != UIDeviceOrientationPortrait && curOrientation != UIDeviceOrientationPortraitUpsideDown && curOrientation != UIDeviceOrientationLandscapeLeft && curOrientation != UIDeviceOrientationLandscapeRight) { orientation = [[UIApplication sharedApplication] statusBarOrientation]; } }

  • Any way to trigger interface orientation check?

    - by Johnny Tee
My app is going from a flipside view (only one orientation) to its main view (can have any sort of orientation. When I go from flipside back to main view, the main view's orientation is not checked and changed immediately. I need a way to trigger the built in orientation check that happens in willRotateToInterfaceOrientation so that the orientation is correct when the user goes from flipside view to main view. Any help is appreciated. I saw another question about this but didn't see a definitive answer. Thanks!

  • New iPad vs. iPad 2–Side by side comparison of hardware specification [Infographic]

    - by Gopinath
Apple released the 3rd generation of iPad on March 7th with spectacular hardware and software specs. The new iPad is the most advanced tablet available in the market with not much of competition. The closest competitor to the new iPad is not from Android or RIM or Amazon as they are no where close to the standards of the new iPad . But the competitor is none other than previous generation of iPad 2. In order to help you decide which Apple tablet suits your requirements here is an infographic comparing the iPad  with iPad 2

  • iPad launch orientation

    - by Brian
After reading many posts, I still haven't got a clue how to solve this problem... The first view of my app is a tableViewController. I override (BOOL) shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation: (UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation and it always returns YES. If I hold my iPad upright under landscape orientation, it rotates right after I launch the app. However, if I put my iPad flat on the table, even though my homepage is in landscape orientation, it launches in protrait orientation. So I guess the problem is, how can I get the orientation of my homepage and launch my app with that orientation?

  • Develop an iPad app with MonoTouch, C#, and .NET.

    - by Wallym
Article url: http://www.devproconnections.com/article/mobile-development/ipad-ios-app-monotouch-143636 Since its release in March 2010, the iPad has taken the world by storm. Each new iPad release has launched the device further and further into our lives. Here are some interesting facts that we have seen over the past few years along with some market share analysis:The school that my teenagers attend here in Knoxville, Tennessee, was the first school in the United States to integrate the iPad into its teaching program and its curriculum. Many schools have since followed suit. There are a healthy number of applications in a variety of market segments. In fact, there is a market for iPad point-of-sale systems. The iPad is a popular device and growing more so each day. comScore states that one in four smartphone owners also owns a tablet. We also know that the iPad comprises 68 percent of the tablet market.eMarketer recently issued a report stating that the number of iPad users is expected to grow by 90 percent in the US in 2012.No matter how you slice the data, tablet usage is growing, and the iPad is currently leading the pack. The question for .NET developers is "How can I get me some of that?" Xamarin's MonoTouch offers help, by providing the means for .NET developers to leverage their C# and .NET coding skills to develop iPad applications. MonoTouch has supported the iPad since the initial release of the iOS 3.2 beta SDK all the way up to the most recent iOS SDK, which supports the iPad. In this article, we'll look at targeting the iPad and how we can take advantage of iPad-specific features in our iOS applications written with MonoTouch.I hope you enjoy the article and you find it helpful.

  • Apple iPad 2 In April, iPhone 5 in June With New Hardware[Rumours]

    - by Gopinath
Blogs and news sites are buzzing with the rumours of Apple’s next generation iPad and iPhone devices. These rumours interests the bloggers, geeks and end users of Apple devices as Apple maintains very tight lip on the new features of their upcoming products. The gadget blog Engadget has some very interesting rumours on the release of iPad 2 & iPhone 5 as well the new hardware they are going to have. Lets get into the details if you love to read the rumours of high profile blogs iPad 2 Release Date and Specs Apple seems to be all set to release iPad 2 in April, that is almost an year after the release of first iPad. It’s common for Apple to enjoy an one year long time to release a new version of their products. So if at all the rumours are to be believed, I can place an order of iPad 2 in April. Just like many of you out there, I’m also holding my iPad buying instinct and waiting for iPad 2 as it’s going to have at the minimum retina display,  Facetime features and few game changing features in Apple’s style. The report claims, iPad 2 will have a front and back cameras retina display SD Card slot (seems to be no USB) a dual GSM / CDMA chipset, that lets you use it with both GSM(AT &T, Airte) and CDMA(Verizon, Reliance) telecom providers iPhone 5 Release Date and Specs When it comes to iPhone 5 information, the rumour claims that the new iPhone is a completed redesigned device and it’s slated to release in summer of United States(i.e. June 2011). The device is also being tested by senior Apple executives right inside the campus and strictly not allowed to carry it outside. This restriction is to make sure that iPhone 5 will not land land up in a bar and then in the hands of geek blogs like how it happened with iPhone 4 last year. When it comes to the hardware of iPhone 5 Apple’s new A5 CPU (a Cortex A9-based, multi-core chip) a dual GSM / CDMA chipset, that lets you use it with both GSM(AT &T, Airte) and CDMA(Verizon, Reliance) telecom providers via Engadget and cc image credit flickr/mr-blixt This article titled,Apple iPad 2 In April, iPhone 5 in June With New Hardware[Rumours], was originally published at Tech Dreams. - by zoul
Hello! I have an MVC application with a single model and several views (something like skins). I want the user to be able to switch the views and I can’t get it working with interface orientation. The most simple approach looks like this: - (void) switchToADifferentView: (UIView*) newView { // self is a descendant of UIViewController self.view = newView; } This does not work because the incoming view does not get rotated according to current orientation (until the next orientation change, test case). Is there a way to force the orientation on a view? It looks like the system is trying really hard to keep the interface controls for itself. (Or is it as simple as setting the right transform by hand?) I figured I’d better not switch the views directly and switch controllers instead. This makes sense, as it makes the initial code simpler. But how do I switch controllers that have no “navigation relation” between them? I guess I could use presentModalViewController:, but that seems like a hack. Same goes for navigation controller. If I exchange the controllers by hand, I get the wrong orientation again: - (void) switchToAController: (id) incoming { [currentController.view removeFromSuperview]; [window addSubview:incoming.view]; // does not respect current orientation } Now how the heck do I simply exchange the current controller for another one? Again, the controllers are something like “skins” operating above a shared model, so it really makes no sense to pretend that skin A is a “modal” dialog above skin B or that they’re a part of a navigation stack.

  • How do I lock the layout of my android program to one orientation

    - by Mike V
I'm trying to write a program that needs smooth orientation sensor samples as the phone is rotated all around. Every time the orientation of the phone is changed, it interrupts the data and freezes the program while the layout changes. How can I lock it in one orientation (landscape or portrait, it doesn't matter)? I assume it has something to do with android:layout in the xml file, but I can't find anything online.

  • Fix keyboard orientation in landscape iPad app (upside down keyboard)

    - by hjd
I'm converting a landscape (UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight) iPhone app to be a universal app. So far I've got the orientation working properly: the iPad version will launch with the right splash graphic and start in the right orientation (LandscapeLeft or LandscapeRight) depending on how the user is holding it. But: when I trigger the keyboard while the iPad is in LandscapeLeft, the keyboard appears upside down: I can't post images yet so you can see the error here: http://blog.durdle.com/images/ipad_keyboard.png That's a UIAlertView with a UITextField added to it. I guess the keyboard at this point is in the LandscapeRight orientation. If I rotate the device to LandscapeRight, the game view rotates to match the keyboard, then if I rotate the device back to LandscapeLeft the entire interface - game AND keyboard rotate together to appear correctly. So: how do I ensure it appears in the correct orientation?

  • Android: Width and Height of View After Orientation Change

    - by David
I need to get the width and height of a WebView and pass them in the query string of the URL I am loading in the WebView. I have found a way to do this in onResume(). Since the width and height are not calculated at this point, I post a Runnable to the WebView to be queued for after the UI loads. Here's my problem: when the orientation changes, I am handling it in onConfigurationChanged. When I try to post a Runnable in onConfigurationChanged to the WebView, the WebView's width and height end up being the old orientation's width and height. At what point can I intercept the new width and height after orientation change?
