  • kmemsize problems in VPS even when there is about 500MB free mem

    - by Amer
    Hello, I have a site hosted on a Plesk VPS with 512MB memory and keep on getting kmemsize in "black zone" QoS errors. The soft limit of kmemsize is 12,288,832 and hard limit is 13,517,715. The definition Virtuozzo gives is: Size of unswappable memory, allocated by the operating system kernel. What's eating up the kmemsize? Is there any way to reconfigure and increase the kmemsize? The servers barely have any load or processing. Thanks for the help...

  • Apache crashes every 5min

    - by Simon
    I'm relatively new to server issues, having a site of mine that I started early in the year grow beyond my capabilities of managing it. I need help. I recently moved out of my shared hosting environment onto a dedicated virtual server from Mediatemple. Each week, I run a script that fetches data from my DB, fetches data from last.fm's API and then tweets information to Twitter. My server uses Virtuozzo and when the script runs, Apache crashes every 5min. I checked and saw that the 'kmemsize' parameter reaches its cap (its 13mb). I realise my problem. The MySQL process stays open for long while Apache needs to handle lots of incoming links (about 200 000 pageviews for that day according to my previous host's AWSTATS). Yes, I'm quite unexperienced in this, and I'm clearly killing the server with too many incoming links while it has to manage the updating of the DB. So that is the precedent: I want a few answers. 1) Why did my shared hosting environment not crash apache every 5min? It ran fine, the site only slowed a lot. Clearly, it must be the virtual container and the kmemsize limit? 2) Where do I go from here? Would a physical server (not a virtual container) encounter the same problems? I sent a support request to Mediatemple as well. I need all the help I can get.

  • Java VM problem in OpenVZ

    - by Ginnun
    Hi, I bought a vps for hosting my java needs. But I can't run java on it. Everything about java is correctly installed but when I try to run java ("java -version" forexample) I get this error : Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. I don't think this is a java centered problem, Out of memory for sure. I contacted the vps admin, but he says everything is fine, you have 2gb ram, expandable to 4gb! I did a bit search on the subject, here is my BEANS file (numbers converted to humanredable form using a script). By the way do JVM heap memory allocs count on kmemsize or privvmpages ? How much ram does that configuration allows me to allocate with jvm for a single process? resource held maxheld barrier limit failcnt kmemsize 2.25 mb 2.35 mb 13.71 mb 14.10 mb 0 lockedpages 0 0 1024.00 kb 1024.00 kb 0 privvmpages 20.54 mb 21.33 mb 256.00 mb 272.00 mb 156 shmpages 5.00 mb 5.00 mb 84.00 mb 84.00 mb 0 numproc 13 14 240 240 0 physpages 9.36 mb 9.45 mb 0 MAX_ULONG 0 vmguarpages 0 0 132.00 mb MAX_ULONG 0 oomguarpages 9.36 mb 9.45 mb MAX_ULONG MAX_ULONG 0 numtcpsock 3 3 360 360 0 numflock 3 3 188 206 0 numpty 2 2 16 16 0 numsiginfo 0 1 256 256 0 tcpsndbuf 69.17 kb 69.17 kb 1.64 mb 2.58 mb 0 tcprcvbuf 48.00 kb 48.00 kb 1.64 mb 2.58 mb 0 othersockbuf 6.80 kb 6.80 kb 1.07 mb 2.00 mb 0 dgramrcvbuf 0.00 kb 0.00 kb 256.00 kb 256.00 kb 0 numothersock 9 10 360 360 0 dcachesize 0.00 kb 0.00 kb 3.25 mb 3.46 mb 0 numfile 704 746 9312 9312 0 numiptent 10 10 128 128 0 Thanks in advance!

  • Have I pushed the limits of my current VPS or is there room for optimization?

    - by JRameau
    I am currently on a mediatemple DV server (basic) 512mb dedicated ram, this is a CentOS based VPS with Plesk and Virtuozzo. My experience with it from day 1 has been bad and I only could sooth my server issues with several caching "Band-aids," but my sites are not as small as they were a year ago either so the issues have worsen. I have 3 Drupal installs running on separate (plesk) domains, 1 of those drupal installs is a multisite, that consists of 5-6 sites 2 of those sites are bringing in actual traffic. Those caching "Band-aids" I mentioned are APC, which seemed to help alot initially, and Drupal's Boost, which is considered a poorman's Varnish, it makes all my pages static for anonymous users. Last 30day combined estimate on Google Ananlytics: 90k visitors 260k pageviews. Issue: alot of downtime, I am continually checking if my sites are up, and lately I have been finding it down more than 3 times daily. Restarting Apache will bring it back up, for some time. I have google search every error message and looked up ways to optimize my DV server, and I am beyond stump what is my next move. Is this server bad, have I hit a impossibly low restriction such as the 12mb kernel memory barrier (kmemsize), is it on my end, do I need to optimize some more? *I have provided as much information as I can below, any help or suggestions given will be appreciated Common Error messages I see in the log: [error] (12)Cannot allocate memory: fork: Unable to fork new process [error] make_obcallback: could not import mod_python.apache.\n Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/mod_python/apache.py", line 21, in ? import traceback File "/usr/lib/python2.4/traceback.py", line 3, in ? import linecache ImportError: No module named linecache [error] python_handler: no interpreter callback found. • Throttling Postfix memory

    - by teddybeard
    I have a VPS on 1and1 similar to this configuration (512MB, burst up to 2GB). I run a web service where I crawl the web and notify my users through email and sms when a certain online data feed changes. When I send the emails out, I just have PHP loop through the recipients list and send the emails out using the mail() function. Whenever I try to send a large volume of these messages out, my server starts acting funny. I can't even run an 'ls' sometimes because the shell tells me it 'cannot allocate memory'. The shell is unusable and yet my website is being served up fine. Mail.err contains: Nov 14 17:30:09 s15351477 postfix/smtp[26000]: fatal: inet_addr_local[getifaddrs]: getifaddrs: Cannot allocate memory Nov 14 17:30:09 s15351477 postfix/sendmail[25999]: fatal: username(1000): unable to execute /usr/sbin/postdrop -r: Success Nov 14 18:29:14 s15351477 postfix/smtp[9911]: fatal: inet_addr_local[getifaddrs]: getifaddrs: Cannot allocate memory Nov 14 18:29:14 s15351477 postfix/sendmail[9910]: fatal: username(1000): unable to execute /usr/sbin/postdrop -r: Success Also, if relevant, my bean counters are: Version: 2.5 uid resource held maxheld barrier limit failcnt 53907331: kmemsize 20779422 21041560 31457280 34603008 2989403 lockedpages 0 0 512 512 0 privvmpages 81488 82498 524288 576716 94640 shmpages 2831 2831 32768 32768 0 dummy 0 0 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 numproc 90 91 128 128 6603 physpages 32692 33531 2147483647 2147483647 0 vmguarpages 0 0 131072 2147483647 0 oomguarpages 32942 33781 9223372036854775807 2147483647 0 numtcpsock 22 23 720 720 0 numflock 27 28 376 413 0 numpty 1 1 32 32 0 numsiginfo 0 1 512 512 0 tcpsndbuf 425888 441064 3440640 5406720 0 tcprcvbuf 369200 376832 3440640 5406720 0 othersockbuf 268000 268464 2252160 4194304 0 dgramrcvbuf 0 8472 524288 576716 0 numothersock 180 182 720 720 0 dcachesize 952146 966231 5242880 5767168 0 numfile 3609 3683 8192 8192 0 dummy 0 0 0 0 0 dummy 0 0 0 0 0 dummy 0 0 0 0 0 numiptent 25 25 200 205 0 Is there some way I can throttle postfix to keep it from swamping the system like this?   • CentOS 6.3 Virtual under OpenVZ cannot ping, host lookups, outbound connections while postfix running

    - by Paul Cravey
    My best theory is that some kernel limit is being hit preventing outbound connections. We have tried basically everything from tcpdumps to provisioning an entirely new virtual server (we do not have this problem on any other virtuals), however the problem somehow carried over, even with new postfix build (working). Emails work, and outbound connections work, so long as postfix does not have too much going on. /proc/user_beancounters shows no limits being hit (show below). Nevertheless, pings fail even to IP addresses. TCP stack appears healthy. Load is low. No iowait. Flushed iptables already. Has anyone experienced anything like this? uid resource held maxheld barrier limit failcnt 3: kmemsize 166216365 170262528 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 lockedpages 0 0 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 privvmpages 285727 351885 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 shmpages 16933 17605 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 dummy 0 0 0 0 0 numproc 150 303 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 physpages 314156 326191 0 1280000 0 vmguarpages 0 0 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 oomguarpages 165355 165355 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 numtcpsock 89 172 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 numflock 22 76 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 numpty 1 2 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 numsiginfo 0 75 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 tcpsndbuf 2733472 4371752 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 tcprcvbuf 1798336 5427296 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 othersockbuf 491120 1000760 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 dgramrcvbuf 0 238728 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 numothersock 361 505 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 dcachesize 135941831 136114679 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 numfile 2905 4990 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 dummy 0 0 0 0 0 dummy 0 0 0 0 0 dummy 0 0 0 0 0 numiptent 8 9 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 [root@bni /]# ping 4.2.2.1 PING 4.2.2.1 (4.2.2.1) 56(84) bytes of data. --- 4.2.2.1 ping statistics --- 9 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 8493ms [root@bni /]# service postfix stop [root@bni /]# ping 4.2.2.1 PING 4.2.2.1 (4.2.2.1) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 4.2.2.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=53 time=8.63 ms 64 bytes from 4.2.2.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=53 time=8.62 ms 64 bytes from 4.2.2.1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=53 time=8.63 ms 64 bytes from 4.2.2.1: icmp_seq=4 ttl=53 time=8.66 ms Outbound connections of all sorts fail when postfix is running.

  • Why is my cron daemon is being killed every few minutes? OpenVZ?

    - by user113215
    As of about a week ago, my cron daemon refuses to stay running. I'm using Debian 6. Running something like pgrep cron shows that the daemon isn't running. I start the service with service cron start or /etc/init.d/cron start and it launches, but it disappears from the running process list after a few minutes (varying anywhere between 1 - 30 minutes before the process is killed again). Using strace -f service cron start, I can see that the process is being killed for some reason: nanosleep({56, 0}, 0x7fffa7184c80) = 0 stat("crontabs", {st_mode=S_IFDIR|S_ISVTX|0730, st_size=4096, ...}) = 0 stat("/etc/crontab", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=1100, ...}) = 0 stat("/etc/cron.d", {st_mode=S_IFDIR|0755, st_size=4096, ...}) = 0 stat("/etc/cron.d/php5", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=475, ...}) = 0 stat("/etc/cron.d/anacron", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=244, ...}) = 0 rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, [CHLD], [], 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGCHLD, NULL, {0x4036f0, [CHLD], SA_RESTORER|SA_RESTART, 0x2b0e8465f230}, 8) = 0 rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [], NULL, 8) = 0 nanosleep({60, 0}, <unfinished ...> +++ killed by SIGKILL +++ There's nothing relevant in /var/log/syslog, /var/log/messages, /var/log/auth.log, or /var/log/kern.log to explain why the the process is dying. The system has about 500 MB of free memory, and cat /proc/loadavg returns 0.10 0.21 0.45 so resources shouldn't be the issue. I also tried removing and reinstalling the cron package using apt-get. What else should I check? How do I find out what's killing my crond? Edit: I'm on a virtual machine under OpenVZ (and as such, I have no swap). With cron running, free -m reports: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1024 465 558 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 465 558 Swap: 0 0 0 My OpenVZ User Beancounters via cat /proc/user_beancounters: Version: 2.5 uid resource held maxheld barrier limit failcnt 172087: kmemsize 8275718 25561636 51200000 51200000 0 lockedpages 0 968 2048 2048 0 privvmpages 113442 266465 262200 262200 3740757 shmpages 788 4004 128000 128000 0 dummy 0 0 0 0 0 numproc 39 98 600 600 0 physpages 50521 208434 0 9223372036854775807 0 vmguarpages 0 0 512000 512000 0 oomguarpages 50521 208447 512000 512000 0 numtcpsock 7 323 4096 4096 0 numflock 7 64 2048 2048 0 numpty 1 4 32 32 0 numsiginfo 0 23 1024 1024 0 tcpsndbuf 137984 17878480 20480000 20480000 0 tcprcvbuf 114688 6983504 20480000 20480000 0 othersockbuf 162960 1074440 20480000 20480000 0 dgramrcvbuf 0 24208 10240000 10240000 0 numothersock 101 353 2048 2048 0 dcachesize 459171 747444 10240000 10240000 0 numfile 1010 4221 50000 50000 0 dummy 0 0 0 0 0 dummy 0 0 0 0 0 dummy 0 0 0 0 0 numiptent 39 424 2048 2048 0

  • "Can't create table" when having to many partitions

    - by Chris
    I am currently having a problem I dont understand. Wherever I look it says mySQL (5.5) / InnoDB doesnt have a table limit. I wanted to test the InnoDB compression and was about to create an empty copy of an existing table and ran into the following problem. this one works: CREATE TABLE `hsc` ( LOTS OF STUFF ) ENGINE=InnoDB CHARSET=utf8 PARTITION BY RANGE (pid) SUBPARTITION BY HASH (cons) SUBPARTITIONS 2 (PARTITION hsc_p0 VALUES LESS THAN (10000) , PARTITION hsc_p1 VALUES LESS THAN (20000) , PARTITION hsc_p2 VALUES LESS THAN (30000) , PARTITION hsc_p3 VALUES LESS THAN (40000) , PARTITION hsc_p4 VALUES LESS THAN (50000) , PARTITION hsc_p40 VALUES LESS THAN (4000000) ); this one doesn't: CREATE TABLE `hsc` ( LOTS OF STUFF ) ENGINE=InnoDB CHARSET=utf8 PARTITION BY RANGE (pid) SUBPARTITION BY HASH (cons) SUBPARTITIONS 2 (PARTITION hsc_p0 VALUES LESS THAN (10000) , PARTITION hsc_p1 VALUES LESS THAN (20000) , PARTITION hsc_p2 VALUES LESS THAN (30000) , PARTITION hsc_p3 VALUES LESS THAN (40000) , PARTITION hsc_p4 VALUES LESS THAN (50000) , PARTITION hsc_p5 VALUES LESS THAN (75000) , PARTITION hsc_p6 VALUES LESS THAN (100000) , PARTITION hsc_p7 VALUES LESS THAN (125000) , PARTITION hsc_p8 VALUES LESS THAN (150000) , PARTITION hsc_p9 VALUES LESS THAN (175000) , PARTITION hsc_p40 VALUES LESS THAN (4000000) ); ERROR 1005 (HY000): Can't create table 'hsc' (errno: 1) Its reproducable by removing the number of partitions and adding them again. it does not have to do anything with the name of the table as i tried various names. there is also enough empty space on the HDD. /dev/simfs 230G 26G 192G 12% /var/lib/mysql.mnt There should be no limit on the partitions http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/partitioning-limitations.html Maximum number of partitions. The maximum possible number of partitions for a given table (that does not use the NDB storage engine) is 1024. This number includes subpartitions. i have increased both open_files show variables where variable_name LIKE '%open_files%'; +-------------------+-------+ | Variable_name | Value | +-------------------+-------+ | innodb_open_files | 512 | | open_files_limit | 1536 | +-------------------+-------+ No change. Any clues where should I start looking? UPDATE: the whole thing is running in an openvz environment. i saw in users_beancounters that the numflock was a problem, so i increased it. but the problem still persists. maybe this helps: ulimit -a core file size (blocks, -c) 0 data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited scheduling priority (-e) 0 file size (blocks, -f) unlimited pending signals (-i) 515011 max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 64 max memory size (kbytes, -m) unlimited open files (-n) 1024 pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 8 POSIX message queues (bytes, -q) 819200 real-time priority (-r) 0 stack size (kbytes, -s) 10240 cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited max user processes (-u) 515011 virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited file locks (-x) unlimited cat /proc/user_beancounters Version: 2.5 uid resource held maxheld barrier limit failcnt 200: kmemsize 9309653 13357056 14372700 14790164 0 lockedpages 0 1008 2048 2048 0 privvmpages 675424 686528 1048576 1572864 0 shmpages 33 673 21504 21504 0 dummy 0 0 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 numproc 49 90 240 240 0 physpages 243761 246945 0 9223372036854775807 0 vmguarpages 0 0 1048576 1048576 0 oomguarpages 81672 83305 1048576 1048576 0 numtcpsock 6 8 360 360 0 numflock 175 188 512 512 8 numpty 1 9 16 16 0 numsiginfo 0 48 256 256 0 tcpsndbuf 104640 263912 1720320 2703360 0 tcprcvbuf 98304 131072 1720320 2703360 0 othersockbuf 32368 89304 1126080 2097152 0 dgramrcvbuf 0 2312 262144 262144 0 numothersock 19 28 360 360 0 dcachesize 2285052 3624426 3409920 3624960 0 numfile 616 870 9312 9312 0 dummy 0 0 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 dummy 0 0 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 dummy 0 0 9223372036854775807 9223372036854775807 0 numiptent 24 24 128 128 0
