  • MVC helper functions business logic

    - by Menelaos Vergis
I am creating some helper functions (mvc.net) for creating common controls that I need in almost every project such as alert boxes, dialogs etc. If these do not contain any business logic and it's just client side code (html, js) then it's ok. My problem arises when I need some business logic behind this helper. I want to create a 'rate my (web) application' control that will be visible every 3 days and the user may hide it for now, navigate to rate link or hide it for ever. To do this I need some sort of database access and a code that acts as business logic. Normally I would use a controller for this, with my DI and everything, but I don't know where to put this code now. This should be placed in the helper function or in a controller that responds objects instead of ActionResults?

  • external USB HD doesn't show up on 'sudo fdisk -l' on one Ubuntu, shows up on another (both 'precise')

    - by Menelaos
I have a 1.5TB WD external USB HDD and two Ubuntu systems, both 'precise'. When I plug the disk on system A it doesn't show up on the output of sudo fdisk -l nor is it automatically mounted (note that that wasn't always the case - it used to appear in the past). When I plug it on system B (again Ubuntu precise) it shows up when I do a sudo fdisk -l (output appended at the end) and mounts automatically just fine. What does this discrepancy point to and what kind of diagnostics should I run / tools I should use to troubleshoot the problem? I followed the suggestion I received to do a sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog and the output is the following when I plug, unplug and replug the USB cable on System A: Sep 14 23:27:09 thorin mtp-probe: checking bus 2, device 3: "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:13.2/usb2/2-2" Sep 14 23:27:09 thorin mtp-probe: bus: 2, device: 3 was not an MTP device Sep 14 23:28:01 thorin kernel: [ 338.994295] usb 2-2: USB disconnect, device number 3 Sep 14 23:28:04 thorin kernel: [ 341.808139] usb 2-2: new high-speed USB device number 4 using ehci_hcd Sep 14 23:28:04 thorin mtp-probe: checking bus 2, device 4: "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:13.2/usb2/2-2" Sep 14 23:28:04 thorin mtp-probe: bus: 2, device: 4 was not an MTP device Sep 14 23:29:54 thorin AptDaemon: INFO: Quitting due to inactivity Sep 14 23:29:54 thorin AptDaemon: INFO: Quitting was requested (I guess the last two message are irrelevant). • installing Conkeror on Ubuntu 12.04

    - by Menelaos Perdikeas
I am reading the instructions on conkeror site (and elsewhere) on how to install conkeror on Ubuntu (I am using Ubuntu 12_04 LTS) and it seems that the correct sequence is: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:xtaran/conkeror sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install conkeror conkeror-spawn-process-helper The first step (apt-add-repository) seems to execute without a problem, giving the following output: You are about to add the following PPA to your system: Conkeror Debian packages for Ubuntu releases without xulrunner (i.e. for 11.04 Natty and later) More info: https://launchpad.net/~xtaran/+archive/conkeror Press [ENTER] to continue or ctrl-c to cancel adding it Executing: gpg --ignore-time-conflict --no-options --no-default-keyring --secret- keyring /tmp/tmp.Re7pWaDEQF --trustdb-name /etc/apt/trustdb.gpg --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --primary-keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg --keyserver hkp://keyserver.ubuntu.com:80/ --recv CB29CBE050EB1F371BAB6FE83BE0F86A6D689050 gpg: requesting key 6D689050 from hkp server keyserver.ubuntu.com gpg: key 6D689050: "Launchpad PPA for Axel Beckert" not changed gpg: Total number processed: 1 gpg: unchanged: 1 However, the apt-get update seems unable to fetch packages from the newly added PPA, with its output ending in: Hit http://security.ubuntu.com precise-security/restricted Translation-en Hit http://security.ubuntu.com precise-security/universe Translation-en Err http://ppa.launchpad.net precise/main Sources 404 Not Found Ign http://extras.ubuntu.com precise/main Translation-en_US Err http://ppa.launchpad.net precise/main i386 Packages 404 Not Found Ign http://extras.ubuntu.com precise/main Translation-en Ign http://ppa.launchpad.net precise/main Translation-en_US Ign http://ppa.launchpad.net precise/main Translation-en W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/xtaran/conkeror/ubuntu/dists/precise /main/source/Sources 404 Not Found W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/xtaran/conkeror/ubuntu/dists/precise/main/binary-i386/Packages 404 Not Found E: Some index files failed to download. • Ubuntu 12.04 partioning an external drive without lossing data

    - by Menelaos Perdikeas
I have an Ubuntu 12.04 with an external 1.5T disk (just for data). It is /dev/sdc1 seen below: $ df -T Filesystem Type 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 ext4 1451144932 27722584 1350794536 3% / udev devtmpfs 6199460 4 6199456 1% /dev tmpfs tmpfs 2482692 988 2481704 1% /run none tmpfs 5120 0 5120 0% /run/lock none tmpfs 6206724 284 6206440 1% /run/shm /dev/sdc1 fuseblk 1465135100 172507664 1292627436 12% /media/Elements The thing is I would like to implement this rsync-based backup strategy and I want to use my /dev/sdc1 external drive for that. Since the guide mentioned above recommends placing the backup directory in a separate partition I want to repartition the /dev/sdc1 external hard disk but retain existing data in a separate partition. E.g. split /dev/sdc1 into two partitions: (i) one to be used exclusively for the rsync-based backup and (ii) the other for the existing miscellaneous data. How should I go about partitioning with minimal risk to my existing data and what kind of filesystem do you recommend? I would prefer a console-based guide but unfortunately all the material I found on the web is oriented towards partitioning the main (bootable) disk and not an external fuseblk filesystem used only for passive data.

  • best way to record local modifications to an application's configuration files

    - by Menelaos Perdikeas
I often install applications in Linux which don't come in package form but rather one just downloads a tarball, unpacks it, and runs the app out of the exploded folder. To adjust the application to my environment I need to modify the default configuration files, perhaps add an odd script of my own and I would like to have a way to record all these modifications automatically so I can apply them to another environment. Clearly, the modifications can not be reproduced verbatim as things like IP addresses or username need to change from system to system; still an exhaustive record to what was changed and added would be useful. My solution is to use a pattern involving git. Basically after I explode the tarball I do a git init and an initial commit and then I can save to a file the output of git diff and a cat of all files appearing as new in the git status -s. But I am sure there are more efficient ways. ???

  • User WinWget to keep web site alive in a Windows Server 2003

    - by Menelaos Vergis
I have a site that must stay alive due to a service that runs and check a directory for changes. The site is running in IIS at a Windows Server 2003 and the solution I came up it that I will Schedule a task that requests the home page every 5 minutes. I am sure that this way the site will stay alive almost all the time. I have downloaded Wget from Wget from Windows and I have installed it at my windows server 2003 but I don't know how to use it in order to ping the server but not download anything. Since I want to use this forever I don't want to save anything on the disk, can you provide me with the command that pings a web page but don't save anything on the disk?

  • war Ant task with needxmlfile="false" still complains

    - by Menelaos Perdikeas
    I have the following war task in my build.xml and even though needxmlfile is set to false, Ant (version 1.8.2) complains when the web.xml file does not exist ("BUILD FAILED ... Deployment descriptor: /home/.../web/WEB-INF/web.xml does not exist") What am I missing? <target name="war" depends="build"> <mkdir dir="${build.dir}"/> <war needxmlfile="false" basedir="${webroot.dir}" warfile="${build.dir}/${project.distname}.war" webxml="${webinf.dir}/web.xml"> <exclude name="WEB-INF/${build.dir}/**"/> <exclude name="WEB-INF/src/**"/> <exclude name="WEB-INF/web.xml"/> </war> </target>
