• "Class ref in pre-verified class resolved to unexpected implementation" when running android tests i

- by Mike
I have a module that builds an app called MyApp. I have another that builds some testcases for that app, called MyAppTests. They both build their own APKs, and they both work fine from within my IDE. I'd like to build them using ant so that I can take advantage of continuous integration. Building the app module works fine. I'm having difficulty getting the Test module to compile and run. Using Christopher's tip from a previous question, I used android create test-project -p MyAppTests -m ../MyApp -n MyAppTests to create the necessary build files to build and run my test project. This seems to work great (once I remove an unnecessary test case that it constructed for me and revert my AndroidManifest.xml to the one I was using before it got replaced by android create), but I have two problems. The first problem: The project doesn't compile because it's missing libraries. $ ant run-tests Buildfile: build.xml [setup] Project Target: Google APIs [setup] Vendor: Google Inc. • A story of Murphy–my technical issues at TechDays Switzerland #chtd

- by Laurent Bugnion
I had two sessions at the recent Swiss TechDays. While the first one (Advanced Development for Windows Phone 8) went extremely well (I think), I had a very annoying technical issue in the beginning of my second session. First let me add that I talked to Microsoft about that and I hope they will change a few things in the room assignment for next year. My two sessions were one right after the other, with only 15 minutes break to change room. I don’t mind having two sessions so close from each other, but I would really like them to be in the same room in order to avoid having to move my laptops (plural, that will become important later) and redoing the tech check. That being said, I am guilty of not checking where my talks would be before the day before the conference, and when I did notice, it was too late to change it. After my first session, I quickly moved to the other room and setup my main laptop, a Dell Precision. We tested the video output (VGA) and didn’t notice anything special. The projectors are using a fairly high resolution (kudos to the Basel conference center for not having old school 1024x768 projectors anymore, that makes Blend really hard to demo ;) but since everything went great during the first talk, I was not worried. In fact I even had some time to chat with some early attendees about my Microsoft Surface and the Samsung Slate 7, which I had carried with me in addition to the Precision. I just thought it would be nice to show the hardware that Windows 8 can run on, without thinking any further. When the session started, I immediately noticed that the main screen was not showing anything. I thought I had just forgotten to switch to “duplicate” for the video output, and did that with a quick Win-P. However it didn’t “hold”. After 2 seconds, it reverted back to a black display for my attendees. Then I started to really worry. We tried everything, switching from VGA to HDMI, changing the resolution, setting the projector as primary display, but nothing did the trick. The projector was just refusing to show my screen. Now, to show you how despaired I started to be, I even considered using the “extend” setting (which worked just fine), and to use one of the feedback monitors on the floor but really it was super cumbersome. Eventually, my last resort arrived: I started my Samsung Slate 7, which by chance has Visual Studio 12 and Blend 5 installed, plugged the HDMI projector in the dock (yes, I had the dock with me, which I usually don’t!), connected it to internet (had to enter a long password for that), loaded the source code from my main machine using a USB stick and…. finally started to give my presentation. All in all I think we lost about 10 minutes. Amongst the most horrible minutes of my whole life, truly (yes I am blessed, I didn’t have that many horrible minutes in my life ;) I really want to apologize to my attendees. We joked a bit during the attempts to resolve the issue, the reactions I had after the session were all very nice and sympathetic. Only a handful of people left my session while I was having the issues, and I really don’t blame them (who knew how long the problem would last!!). But still, I probably talked at more than 60 sessions over the years, and this was by far my most painful moment. What did I learn? So what did I learn from this? Well from now on I will always have my slate ready with the latest source code, internet connection and every tool I might need during the presentation. This way, if I detect even a hint that the Precision might not work, I will just switch to the Slate. The experience of presenting on the slate is actually not bad at all, it is just a bit slow for my taste, but it does work. By the way, I will be posting the code and slides for my sessions very soon, I just need to “clean it and zip it”. Stay tuned, and thanks again for your patience in that horrible circumstance. • No USB 04b4:0307 mike input after 10.04

- by Papou
I am using an USB phone that is in fact a so-called "sound card" based on the 04b4:0307 chip. In fact, I have two different phones using 04b4:0307 and in fact I have a sound USB key too. This, I believe, is the start of why they call 04b4:0307 "ubiquitous" (instead of oh four bee...). But not "eternal". The mike worked in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 but not later ([email protected]). "not working" means that 04b4:0307 shows in Sound Preference but that its vu-meter is mute. I have posted the full lsusb and the result of tests in various systems here: http://www.papou.byethost9.com/tmp/1043601.html Note: Tests done on VirtualBox (thankfully). But UbuntUnity no longer works on VB, so I used the LinuxMint equivalent. ?hat's fate. I could not find any problem report close enough. What should be my next step? I believe the problem occurs in module snd-usb-audio. One thing I might try if I knew how is hacking a DEB with its 10.04's source. I can hack DEBs. Any hint welcome on how to make a DEB overriding a kernel packed module. I mean that the newly installed module should have precedence, be loaded instead, the module installed with the kernel. TIA !

• Oracle Service Bus JMS Deployments Utility by Mike Muller

- by JuergenKress
For proxy services utilizing the JMS transport, OSB receives messages from destinations by using an MDB. These MDBs get generated and deployed during activation of the service configuration. OSB creates a random, unique name for the J2EE application that gets deployed to WLS. The name starts with “_ALSB_” and ends in a unique series of digits. The EAR files are written to the sbgen subdirectory of the domain home directory. You will see these applications on the WLS console page for “Deployments”. For various operational reasons, there are times when the application name for a given proxy service needs to be determined. Since the generated name of the application doesn’t reflect the name of the service, it becomes difficult to determine the relationship between the service and its EAR file. In fact, it can not be discerned from either the OSB or WLS consoles.Read the full article here. • Mike Cohn-style burndown charts in JIRA

- by Fuzzy Purple Monkey
We use Jira/Greenhopper for our project planning/tracking. The built-in graphs are great, but when a new issue/story is added during a project, the whole burn-down graph moves up rather than increasing the part of the graph when the issue was added. Ideally I'd like to generate a Mike Cohn-style burndown graph, which shows a hump when new issues are added. Does anyone know of any plugins that support this, or been able to extract this data directly from the database?

• What’s wrong with See[Mike]Code? (no relation)

- by mbcrump
I have been hearing a lot about the website See[Mike]Code. Basically, the site creates an interview url and a job candidate url and lets you see the potential programmer’s code (specifically .NET developer). Below is the candidate’s URL Below is the interviewer url So you might think, ah, this is a good thing. We can screen candidates cheaper and more efficiently. In reality, this is only a good thing if you want your programmer to develop using notepad. I use the most efficient tools that exist to do my job. I would simply fire up VS2010 and type “for” and hit the tab key twice and get the following template. I have no problem keeping MSDN/Google in one of my monitors. I spend time learning VS macros and using Aurora XAML/Expression to produce my XAML for WPF. Sure, I can write a for loop without using the VS Macro, but the real question is, “Why should I?”. My point being, if you really want to test a .NET programmer knowledge then fire up his native working environment and let him use the features of the IDE to develop the simple 10-line program. For a more sophisticated program, then give him 20 minutes and allow access to msdn/google. If the programmer cannot find at the right path then give him the boot.

I have been getting update notifications for a few weeks now but whenever I attempt to install them I get this message; The upgrade needs a total of 74.6 M free space on disk '/boot'. Please free at least an additional 29.8 M of disk space on '/boot'. Empty your trash and remove temporary packages of former installations using 'sudo apt-get clean'. First of all I don't have permission to access /boot (don't know why as its a standalone machine and i'm the only user). Secondly, I emptied the trash; Thirdly, I launched Terminal and entered sudo apt-get clean I was a asked for a sudo password. I entered my system password. Re-entered sudo apt-get clean. The cursor stopped blinking - I assumed it was doing it's "thing". I let it go for about 10 minutes then exited Terminal. Tried to install the updates but just got the same message. • Alternative site to Mike Gunderloy's "The Daily Grind" (Larkware)?

- by splattne
As a developer who is always looking for new resources and information, I loved Mike Gunderloy's blog "The Daily Grind" on www.larkware.com ("We get up early, so you don't have to.") Unfortunately (for me) Mike decided to discontinue the blog in December 2007. So, my question: is there a similar blog / site which provides such good links and resources on a daily basis? I couldn't find one. Thanks! Update: to be clear: I am specifically looking for a site like larkware.com, a kind of aggregator/meta-site of information about interesting articles, components, software for (.NET) developers.

• Exchange Server 2007 Forwarding Circles

- by LorenVS
Hello, I asked a question quite a while ago about two members of an organization who wanted to receive all of each other's emails, and yet maintain seperate mailboxes. (so all emails to mike@company get sent to mike and dave and all emails to dave@company get sent to mike and dave). At the time, I actually only needed to implement one side of this (only mikes emails got sent to both receipients) and (with the help of ServerFault) I set up forwarding on dave's inbox so that all of his emails would also be sent to mike. I'm now in a situation where I have to implement the other side of this relation (such that mike's emails will also forward to dave). I still remember how to set up the forwarding rule, but I'm worried that I might be creating a circular forwarding rule such that mike@compnay forwards to dave@company which forwards to mike@company and so on. Can anyone clear up my confusion (just want to make sure I don't make a stupid mistake). Thanks a ton

• Why is gcc failing with "unrecognized command line option "-L/lusr/opt/mpfr-2.4.2/lib" "?

- by Mike
My sysadmin recently installed a new version of GCC, in /lusr/opt/gcc-4.4.3. I tested it as follows: mike@canon:~$ cat test.c int main(){ return 0; } mike@canon:~$ gcc test.c /lusr/opt/gcc-4.4.3/libexec/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.4.3/cc1: error while loading shared libraries: libmpfr.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory After informing my sysadmin about this, he said to add /lusr/opt/mpfr-2.4.2/lib:/lusr/opt/gmp-4.3.2/lib to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH. After doing this, I get the following error: mike@canon:~$ gcc test.c cc1: error: unrecognized command line option "-L/lusr/opt/mpfr-2.4.2/lib" First, my sysadmin wasn't entirely sure this was the best workaround(though he did say it worked for him...), so is there a better solution? Second, why am I getting a linker error from cc, and how can I fix it? Some information which may be helpful: mike@canon:~$ env | grep mpfr OLDPWD=/lusr/opt/mpfr-2.4.2/lib LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/lusr/opt/mpfr-2.4.2/lib:/lusr/opt/gmp-4.3.2/lib: mike@canon:~$ echo $LDFLAGS (the above is a blank line)

My code is: PositionVec position_vec(2); PositionMap position(position_vec.begin(), get(vertex_index, g)); int iterations = 100; double width = 100.0; double height = 100.0; minstd_rand gen; rectangle_topology<> topology(gen, 0, 0, 100, 100); fruchterman_reingold_force_directed_layout(g, position, topology); //Compile fails on this line The diagnostics produced by clang++(I've also tried GCC) are: In file included from test.cpp:2: /Volumes/Data/mike/Downloads/boost_1_43_0/boost/graph/fruchterman_reingold.hpp:95:3: error: no member named 'dimensions' in 'boost::simple_point<double>' BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT (Point::dimensions == 2); ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In file included from test.cpp:2: In file included from /Volumes/Data/mike/Downloads/boost_1_43_0/boost/graph/fruchterman_reingold.hpp:13: In file included from /Volumes/Data/mike/Downloads/boost_1_43_0/boost/graph/graph_traits.hpp:15: In file included from /Volumes/Data/mike/Downloads/boost_1_43_0/boost/tuple/tuple.hpp:24: /Volumes/Data/mike/Downloads/boost_1_43_0/boost/static_assert.hpp:118:49: note: instantiated from: sizeof(::boost::STATIC_ASSERTION_FAILURE< BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT_BOOL_CAST( B ) >)>\ ^ In file included from test.cpp:2: /Volumes/Data/mike/Downloads/boost_1_43_0/boost/graph/fruchterman_reingold.hpp:95:3: note: instantiated from: BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT (Point::dimensions == 2); ^ ~~~~~~~ /Volumes/Data/mike/Downloads/boost_1_43_0/boost/graph/fruchterman_reingold.hpp:95:31: note: instantiated from: BOOST_STATIC_ASSERT (Point::dimensions == 2); ~~~~~~~^ /Volumes/Data/mike/Downloads/boost_1_43_0/boost/graph/fruchterman_reingold.hpp:417:19: note: in instantiation of template class 'boost::grid_force_pairs<boost::rectangle_topology<boost::random::linear_congruential<int, 48271, 0, 2147483647, 399268537> >, boost::iterator_property_map<__gnu_cxx::__normal_iterator<boost::simple_point<double> *, std::vector<boost::simple_point<double>, std::allocator<boost::simple_point<double> > > >, boost::vec_adj_list_vertex_id_map<boost::property<boost::vertex_name_t, std::basic_string<char>, boost::no_property>, unsigned long>, boost::simple_point<double>, boost::simple_point<double> &> >' requested here make_grid_force_pairs(topology, position, g)), ^ /Volumes/Data/mike/Downloads/boost_1_43_0/boost/graph/fruchterman_reingold.hpp:431:3: note: in instantiation of function template specialization 'boost::fruchterman_reingold_force_directed_layout<boost::rectangle_topology<boost::random::linear_congruential<int, 48271, 0, 2147483647, 399268537> >, boost::adjacency_list<boost::listS, boost::vecS, boost::undirectedS, boost::property<boost::vertex_name_t, std::basic_string<char>, boost::no_property>, boost::no_property, boost::no_property, boost::listS>, boost::iterator_property_map<__gnu_cxx::__normal_iterator<boost::simple_point<double> *, std::vector<boost::simple_point<double>, std::allocator<boost::simple_point<double> > > >, boost::vec_adj_list_vertex_id_map<boost::property<boost::vertex_name_t, std::basic_string<char>, boost::no_property>, unsigned long>, boost::simple_point<double>, boost::simple_point<double> &>, boost::square_distance_attractive_force, boost::attractive_force_t, boost::no_property>' requested here fruchterman_reingold_force_directed_layout ^ test.cpp:48:3: note: in instantiation of function template specialization 'boost::fruchterman_reingold_force_directed_layout<boost::rectangle_topology<boost::random::linear_congruential<int, 48271, 0, 2147483647, 399268537> >, boost::adjacency_list<boost::listS, boost::vecS, boost::undirectedS, boost::property<boost::vertex_name_t, std::basic_string<char>, boost::no_property>, boost::no_property, boost::no_property, boost::listS>, boost::iterator_property_map<__gnu_cxx::__normal_iterator<boost::simple_point<double> *, std::vector<boost::simple_point<double>, std::allocator<boost::simple_point<double> > > >, boost::vec_adj_list_vertex_id_map<boost::property<boost::vertex_name_t, std::basic_string<char>, boost::no_property>, unsigned long>, boost::simple_point<double>, boost::simple_point<double> &> >' requested here fruchterman_reingold_force_directed_layout(g, position, topology); ^ 1 error generated.

• March 2010 Chicago Architects Group Wrap Up

- by Tim Murphy
I would like to thank everyone who came out to last night’s event and especially thank Mike Vogt for the presentation. I think at first everyone glassed over since very few of us spend a lot of time with Integration Architecture and most of us live more in the application architecture space. Learning about subject like BPEL and BPMN was refreshing. The discussion after Mike’s talk was lively and I think that everyone came away with a good idea of areas they might want to know more about. People stuck around long after the meeting was over. If you are interested in the topic you can find the slides here. Be sure to join us next month when Matt Hidinger talks about Onion Architecture. Details are coming soon. del.icio.us Tags: CAG,Chicago Architects Group

However, there's an odd amount of SSH related processes currently running. I figured dave's sftp session might not show up in the output of w for whatever reason but that doesn't explain all the running processes... What's wrong? :/

• How do you measure the value of your software?

- by Mike
Hi, One of the principles of agile is that you should measure working software: Working software is the primary measure of progress - 12 principles of Agile The thing is, while I can measure my software in terms of stories done, bugs squashed or the volume of defect reports decreasing, I'm stuck on how to measure the value of my software. If I use Mike Cohn as an example and his helping SalesForce.com deliver 500% more value to it's customers compared to the previous year* - how do I measure that increase? How do I measure where I am right now? Other metrics he uses are the number of features and the number of features per developer. This is something I could work out if my backlog was in good order and the stories were cut up by 'feature', but we're just starting out with Agile, so I need some way of working out what the value is we deliver now, then use a similar metric in say, six months, to see if we've increased our output. I've heard about measuring value of software by an uptick in revenue, or an increase in customer satisfaction (how would you measure that though?) but those increases could be attributed to anything in the company (sales, accounting, support) and not directly to the work my department is doing. So, how do you guys measure the value of your software and how did you start? Thanks, Mike *Succeeding With Agile - Mike Cohn
