• 2011 Tech Goal Review

  A year ago I wrote a post listing my professional goals for 2011.  I thought I would review them and see how I did. Release an Android app to the marketplace – Didn’t do it.  In fact, haven’t really touched Android much since I wrote that.  I still have some ideas but am not sure if I will get around to it. Contribute free software to the community – I did do this.  I have been collaborating with others via github more lately. Regularly attend a user group meetings outside of Java – Did not do this.  Family life being what it is makes this not that much of a priority right now. Obtain the Oracle Certified Web Developer Certification – Did not do this.  This is not much of a priority to me any more. Learn scala – I am about 50/50 on this one.  I read a few scala books but did not write an actual application. Write an app using JSF – Did not do this.  Still interested. Present at a user group meeting – I did a Maven presentation at the Java user group. Use git more, and more effectively – Definitely did this.  Using it on a daily basis now. Overall, I got about halfway on my goals.  It’s not too bad since I did do a few things that weren’t on my list. Learned to develop applications using GWT and deploy them to Google App Engine Converted one of my sites from PHP to Ruby / Sinatra (learning to use it in the process) Studied up on the HTML 5 features and did a lot of Javascript development

• Impatient Customers Make Flawless Service Mission Critical for Midsize Companies

  At times, I can be an impatient customer. But I’m not alone. Research by The Social Habit shows that among customers who contact a brand, product, or company through social media for support, 32% expect a response within 30 minutes and 42% expect a response within 60 minutes! 70% of respondents to another study expected their complaints to be addressed within 24 hours, irrespective of how they contacted the company. I was intrigued when I read a recent blog post by David Vap, Group Vice President of Product Development for Oracle Service Cloud. It’s about “Three Secrets to Innovation” in customer service. In David’s words: 1) Focus on making what’s hard simple 2) Solve real problems for real people 3) Don’t just spin a good vision. Do something about it  I believe midsize companies have a leg up in delivering on these three points, mainly because they have no other choice. How can you grow a business without listening to your customers and providing flawless service? Big companies are often weighed down by customer service practices that have been churning in bureaucracy for years or even decades. When the all-in-one printer/fax/scanner I bought my wife for Christmas (call me a romantic) failed after sixty days, I wasted hours of my time navigating the big brand manufacturer’s complex support and contact policies only to be offered a refurbished replacement after I shipped mine back to them. There was not a happy ending. Let's just say my wife still doesn't have a printer.  Young midsize companies need to innovate to grow. Established midsize company brands need to innovate to survive and reach the next level. • Replicating between Cloud and On-Premises using Oracle GoldenGate

  Do you have applications running on the cloud that you need to connect with the on premises systems. The most likely answer to this question is an astounding YES!  If so, then you understand the importance of keep the data fresh at all times across the cloud and on-premises environments. This is also one of the key focus areas for the new GoldenGate 12c release which we announced couple of week ago via a press release. Most enterprises have spent years avoiding the data “silos” that inhibit productivity. For example, an enterprise which has adopted a CRM strategy could be relying on an on-premises based marketing application used for developing and nurturing leads. At the same time it could be using a SaaS based Sales application to create opportunities and quotes. The sales and the marketing teams which use these systems need to be able to access and share the data in a reliable and cohesive way. This example can be extended to other applications areas such as HR, Supply Chain, and Finance and the demands the users place on getting a consistent view of the data. When it comes to moving data in hybrid environments some of the key requirements include minimal latency, reliability and security: Data must remain fresh. As data ages it becomes less relevant and less valuable—day-old data is often insufficient in today’s competitive landscape. Reliability must be guaranteed despite system or connectivity issues that can occur between the cloud and on-premises instances. Security is a key concern when replicating between cloud and on-premises instances. There are several options to consider when replicating between the cloud and on-premises instances. Option 1 – Secured network established between the cloud and on-premises A secured network is established between the cloud and on-premises which enables the applications (including replication software) running on the cloud and on-premises to have seamless connectivity to other applications irrespective of where they are physically located. Option 2 – Restricted network established between the cloud and on-premises A restricted network is established between the cloud and on-premises instances which enable certain ports (required by replication) be opened on both the cloud and on the on-premises instances and white lists the IP addresses of the cloud and on-premises instances. Option 3 – Restricted network access from on-premises and cloud through HTTP proxy This option can be considered when the ports required by the applications (including replication software) are not open and the cloud instance is not white listed on the on-premises instance. This option of tunneling through HTTP proxy may be only considered when proper security exceptions are obtained. Oracle GoldenGate Oracle GoldenGate is used for major Fortune 500 companies and other industry leaders worldwide to support mission-critical systems for data availability and integration. Oracle GoldenGate addresses the requirements for ensuring data consistency between cloud and on-premises instances, thus facilitating the business process to run effectively and reliably. The architecture diagram below illustrates the scenario where the cloud and the on-premises instance are connected using GoldenGate through a secured network In the above scenario, Oracle GoldenGate is installed and configured on both the cloud and the on-premises instances. On the cloud instance Oracle GoldenGate is installed and configured on the machine where the database instance can be accessed. Oracle GoldenGate can be configured for unidirectional or bi-directional replication between the cloud and on premises instances. The specific configuration details of Oracle GoldenGate processes will depend upon the option selected for establishing connectivity between the cloud and on-premises instances. • Simple 3D Physics engine as a part of graduation project [on hold]

  I am working on my graduation project and one part of it is to simulate the motion of a rigid body in 3D space. I can use either already written physics engine or to write it myself. It's quite an interesting challenge for me, so I would like to do it myself. I am able to use either C++ or Java for programming (prefer C++). I am using Mac OS X and Debian 7. Could you suggest any guides or tutorials how to do it, can't find it anywhere... More precisely, I need a very simple engine, without collision detection, and many other things that I do not know, I just need to calculate the forces and move my body, depending on the resultant force. If you think that this task is still very difficult or there is no such tutorial, please suggest me some good and simple engine.

• Image Collector Rips Web Page Images to Your Dropbox Account

  Chrome: Image Collector is a simple Chrome extension that rips the images on the page you’re visiting to your Dropbox (or Google Drive) accounts. Just click the icon, uncheck any images you don’t want it to download, and click save. You can, technically, modify the script to download the images directly to your hard drive, but modifying it was a bit of a hassle and the default save-to-Dropbox action is so smooth we saw little reason to do so. • Inverted LACK Table Serves as a Perfect Gear Rack [DIY]

  We’ve seen IKEA gear hacked to hold audio and computer gear before, but this mod adds in a simple and effective twist. LACK end tables are, conveniently, the same width as a standard server rack. This makes it super simple for DIYers to mount their gear right into the legs of the table with no modification necessary. In this case, however, Winston Smith included a clever update to the mod. Rather than leave it like a standard table, he flipped the table upside down for increased stability and a stronger connection between the legs of his improvised audio rack and the table-top-turned-floor-plate. He then finished it with a matching LACK shelf piece to serve as a turn-table stand. • Is it common to prototype in a higher level language?

  I'm currently toying with the idea of embarking on a project that far exceeds my current programming ability in a language I have very little real world experience in (C). Would it be valuable to prototype in a higher level language that I'm more familiar with (like Perl/Python/Ruby/C#) just so I can get the overall design going? Ultimately, the final product is performance sensitive, hence the choice of C, but I'm afraid not knowing C well will make me lose the forest for the trees. While searching for similar questions, I noticed one fellow mention that programmers used to prototype in Prolog, then crank it out in assembler.

  Watching YouTube videos on the Wii just got a whole lot easier; YouTube’s native Wii app streamlines the process and cuts out the need for the Internet Channel browser. Previous to this release you had to use the $5 Internet Channel and the Opera Browser to access YouTube. It worked but it wasn’t elegant by any means. The new YouTube Wii app sports a clean interface, simple Wiimote-based controls, and all the great YouTube content you can handle. The app is free but currently U.S. only. According to the press release, the app will be rolled out to other countries in the coming months. • Price Drop for Processor based License on Exalytics

  ·       33% reduction in the list `per processor` license pricing for the Oracle BI Foundation Suite ·       New capacity-based licensing which allows customers to think big & start small, significantly lowering the entry price point for an Exalytics. Oracle BI Software List Price changes In response to new powerful platforms like the in-memory Oracle Exalytics with 40 cpu cores (counted under Oracle pricing policy as 20 “processors”), the list price of “Oracle BI Foundation Suite” (BIFS) is reduced by 33% from $450K per processor to $300K per processor. Capacity-based licensing on Exalytics (Trusted Partitions) “Capacity-based pricing” for the BIFS, Endeca, Essbase and Times Ten for Exalytics software is now available for Exalytics systems. This is delivered using “Oracle VM” (OVM).  We still ship a full Exalytics machine to all customers, but they may choose to only use and license a subset of the processors installed in the machine.   Customers can license Exalytics software in units of 5 “processors”: 5, 10, 15 or the full capacity 20.   As the customer’s implementation and workload increases, it is a simple matter to license additional processors and, using OVM, make them available to the BI or EPM application. • ITT Corporation Goes Live on Oracle Sales and Marketing Cloud Service (Fusion CRM)!

  Back in Q2 of FY12, a division of ITT invited Oracle to demo our CRM On Demand product while the group was considering Salesforce.com. Chris Porter, our Oracle Direct sales representative learned the players and their needs and began to develop relationships. We lost that deal, but not Chris's persistence. A few months passed and Chris called on the ITT Shape Cutting Division's Director of Sales to see how things were going. Chris was told that the plan was for the division to buy more Salesforce.com. In fact, he informed Chris that he had just sent his team to Salesforce.com training. During the conversation, Chris mentioned that our new Oracle Sales Cloud Service could run with Outlook. This caused the ITT Sales Director to reconsider the plan to move forward with our competition.
