• AVG Installer Error

  my computer is running window XP home editon. the avg i am using is expirying soon and so a pop out ask me to install AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011. When the download is about to complete, i was ask to reboot the computer, i click "OK". after my computer restart , there was a pop out say "AVG Installer- Error A system restart is required in order to continue with the installation. Please restart your system and try again." Since the only option was "OK" i click it, and restart my computer. After restarting, the same pop-out appear. I could not download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011 as the pop-out keep appearing if i run it or uninstall. can anyone help me?? btw my brower is int

• Digitally sign MS Office (Word, Excel, etc..) and PDF files on the server

  I need to digitally sign MS Office and PDF files that are stored on a server. I really mean a digital signature that is integrated in the document, according to each specific file formats. This is the process I had in mind : Create a hash of the file's content Send the hash to a custom written java applet in the browser The user encrypts the hash with his/her private key (on an usb token via PKCS#11 for example), thus effectively signing the file. The applet then sends the signature to the server On the server I would then incorporate the signature in the file's (MS Office and PDF files can do that without changing the file's content, probably by just setting some metadata field) What is cool is that you never have to download and upload the complete file to the server again. What is even cooler, the customer doesn't need Office or PDF Writer to sign the files. Parts 2, 3 and 4 are OK for me, my company bought all the JAVA technology I need for that for a previous project I worked on. Problem : I can't seem to find any documentation/examples to do parts 1 and 5 for Office files . Are my google skills failing me this time ? Do you have any pointers to documentation or examples for doing that for MS Office files ? The underlying technology isn't that important to me : I can use Java, .Net, COM, any working technology is OK ! Note : I'm 95% sure I can nail points 1 and 5 for PDF files using iText Thanks ** Edit : If I can't do that with hashes and must download the complete file to the client, it's also possible. • .htaccess rewrite all queries to static page

  I have an account where hundreds of inbound links to their calender are showing up as 404 (they moved their site to a new platform). I would like to make a wildcard redirection of all URLs with a query to their old event calender to land on a new static page, and do the same for their webstore queries. I've tried several variations, but can't seem to get it to work. CASE 1: I need to redirect URLs like these (note the difference between "showDay" and "showWeek"): apps/calendar/showWeek?calID=5107976&year=2011&month=7&day=10 apps/calendar/showDay?calID=5107976&year=2011&month=9&day=10 To: http://domain.com/events/ CASE 2: And also URLs like these: apps/webstore/products/show/1927074 TO: http://subdomain.domain.com/ I can't seem to get the syntax right to take all of the URLS and redirect them. I'm looking for the equivalent of a wildcard like "apps/calendar/*" would give you at a command line. Any help is appreciated!

• Internet Explorer 9 send page by email grayed out

  Internet Explorer 9 in Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit has the items Send Page by email and Send link by email grayed out. The default email client is Windows Live Mail 2011. I have used the "Set Default" dialogs to do that. Everything else recognizes Windows Live Mail 2011 as the default, including Firefox 4. I have duplicated this problem on two computers here. I have changed the default email program to Mozilla Thunderbird on one of the computers, and IE9 won't let me Send Page by email or Send link by email there, either. Has anyone gotten this to work? Firefox is my default browser, but sometimes I have to use IE9.

• Win Server 2003 - Task Scheduler - Tasks with GUI and Services

  I need to run excel macro daily. I scheduled it with Windows Scheduler and it worked fine until I had to change my password. I wonder if it's possible to have a task scheduled without a password? As alternative we have third party scheduling software, but this software cannot launch excel. The tech support said that since excel has gui and scheduling software runs as service with "Allow to interact to Desktop" disabled, it cannot launch excel. Also tech support mentioned that "Allow to interact to Desktop" is not supported as of Vista. I totally trust tech support guy, I just need a work around that would make my network administrator and me happy. Regards.

• Microsoft Silverlight MVP one more time

  Another wonderful first email of the year… announcing that I’ve just been re-awarded Most Valuable Professional (MVP) by Microsoft for Silverlight. This is my 5th year as an MVP in a row and I am still very honoured and excited! In 2010 I had the pleasure to be involved in many community events around Silverlight, speaking at Microsoft conferences and user groups (doing the launch of the Vancouver Silverlight User Group was fun!), as well as taking part in worldwide conference like MIX Las Vegas and the MVP Summit in Redmond. Also I did new kind of activities in 2010: I wrote questions for the first Microsoft Silverlight certification exam (70-506), and I was Technical reviewer of 3 Silverlight books. I finally started to share more on Twitter @LaurentDuveau. In 2010 the content of this blog was mostly about Silverlight, I expect it to be the same in 2011, plus a touch of Windows Phone as well. I already know that 2011 will be hell of a good year.. I’ll be at the next MVP Summit in Seattle, also speaker at DevTeach which comes back to Montreal (at last!) and have some nice Silverlight trainings plans for France and Tunisia. More than that, my business RunAtServer is healthy (proud of my team!) and I have insane news and a very big surprise coming on that front.... stay tuned! Happy New Year!

• Attend my Fusion sessions

  The inaugural Fusion conference was 1 year ago in June 2011 and I was there doing a demo in the keynote, and also presenting a breakout session. If you look at the abstract and title for that session you won't see the term "C++ AMP" in there because the technology wasn't announced and we didn't want to spill the beans ahead of the keynote, where the technology was announced. It was only an announcement, we did not give any bits out, and in fact the first bits came three months later in September 2011 with the Beta following in February 2012. So it really feels great 1 year later, to be back at Fusion presenting two sessions on C++ AMP, demonstrating our progress from that announcement, to the Visual Studio 2012 Release Candidate that came out last week. If you are attending Fusion (in person or virtually later), be sure to watch my two-part session. Part 1 is PT-3601 on Tuesday 4pm and part 2 is PT-3602 on Wednesday 4pm. Here is the shared abstract for both parts: Harnessing GPU Compute with C++ AMP C++ AMP is an open specification for taking advantage of accelerators like the GPU. In this session we will explore the C++ AMP implementation in Microsoft Visual Studio 2012. After a quick overview of the technology understanding its goals and its differentiation compared with other approaches, we will dive into the programming model and its modern C++ API. This is a code heavy, interactive, two-part session, where every part of the library will be explained. Demos will include showing off the richest parallel and GPU debugging story on the market, in the upcoming Visual Studio release. See you there!   Here is a bit of disappointing news for Apple fan boys. Steve Jobs is again going on medical leave as he wants to concentrate on his health for sometime. In an email to the employees of Apple Steve said, At my request, the board of directors has granted me a medical leave of absence so I can focus on my health..I will continue as CEO and be involved in major strategic decisions for the company.I have great confidence that Tim and the rest of the executive management team will do a terrific job executing the exciting plans we have in place for 2011   Seems to the plans for release of much anticipated iPad 2 and iPhone 5 will not be affected by Steve’s absence -as rumoured iPad 2 In April, iPhone 5 In June With New Hardware. • Silverlight Firestarter 2010 Keynote with Scott Guthrie: Silverlight has a bright future!

  If you didn’t get chance to watch the Silverlight Firestart event live during the webcast it is available online to view now. If you’re a Silverlight developer or perhaps a shop actively planning on developing a Silverlight application then you’re going to want to watch this video. The Silverlight 5 feature set unveiled during the keynote is fantastic! I particularly like Scott’s approach and comments on the future of Silverlight. I appreciated his open and direct acknowledgment that there has “been a lot of angst on this topic in the last few weeks” and he took the bull by the horns and stated “Let me say up front that there is a Silverlight future, and we think it’s going to be a very bright one.” That comment drew applause from the local audience and in our local viewing event held in Raleigh, NC. Of course my first question was when can we get our grubby little hands on Silverlight 5 and start working with it. The answer unfortunately wasn’t “right now” but they did announce the Silverlight 5 beta will be available in the first half of 2011. Of course the following is pure speculation on my part but I wouldn’t be surprised if they made it available at a certain event in April 2011. Talk to a C-level executive, and the conversation turns to mobile, and the question “How do I get me some of that?” comes up. Talk to other developers, and they tell you they’re targeting mobile devices. Mobile has become a big deal as smartphones have taken hold in the consumer marketplace.In the years leading up to the current focus on mobile applications and devices, Web developers have been adding more and more client-side functionality to their applications. You can see this in the use of client-side JavaScript libraries like jQuery.With the growth of the market for mobile devices, the ability to create applications that run across platforms is very important for developers and for businesses that are trying to keep their expenses in check. There are a set of applications, mostly in the area of content consumption (think Amazon.com), that run well in a mobile Web browser. Unfortunately, there are differences between Web browsers on various mobile devices. The goal of the recently introduced jQuery Mobile (jQM) library is to provide cross-browser support to allow developers to build applications that can run across the various mobile Web browsers and provide the same—or at least a very similar—user interface.The jQuery Mobile library was introduced in an alpha release in the fall of 2010 and released to manufacturing in November 2011. At the time of this writing, the current version of jQuery Mobile is 1.1.1. By the time you read this, jQuery Mobile will almost certainly have reached version 1.2.0. The library has been embraced by Microsoft, Adobe and other companies for mobile Web development. In August 2011, jQM had 32 percent market share compared with other mobile JavaScript frameworks such as iWebKit and jQTouch. This market share is impressive given that it started from zero little more than 12 months ago, and the 1.0 release is the first officially supported release.

• $TERM set to "dumb" causes problems with suspend

  I've just upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. So far I love it, everything seems just so much snappier. Now I just have one minor issue. When I try to suspend my laptop, it doesn't work - instead it fades out the screen, blocks it and then instantly wakes back. I've checked the logs in /var/log/pm-suspend.log and this fragment seems relevant: /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/000kernel-change suspend suspend: success. Running hook /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear suspend suspend: TERM environment variable not set. /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear suspend suspend: Returned exit code 1. Sat Nov 19 12:23:20 CET 2011: Inhibit found, will not perform suspend Sat Nov 19 12:23:20 CET 2011: Running hooks for resume The mentioned script at /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/00clear reads: #!/bin/bash clear When I open a terminal anywhere by hand, $TERM is set to either "linux" or "xterm". However somehow when the 00clear command is executed $TERM is set to "dumb". Two questions: What is the correct value for $TERM when running 00clear script? Where can I set it up? I've looked for solutions on the web, however I could only find information on how to configure $TERM in a regular terminal (and this one is set properly).
