• Forum that integrates into CMS and has curated category pages with tagged threads

  I'm looking for a forum that meets these requirements: Login using Facebook/Twitter/OpenID etc. User profiles with reward system Voting/thumbs up function Categories and tags for sorting threads Custom category pages with moderated static header Embeddable threads and categories (For example, a whole category or single thread can be integrated into wordpress) API to users, discussions etc. I've looked at forums like Vanilla, Disqus, OSQA etc, but none seem to match the above "hybrid criteria". Hosted or self-hosted doesn't matter but I'm really looking for something that can be integrated into an existing CMS to replace comments while at the same time have curated category pages and user profiles. • Expandable or Auto-Resize TextBox Height

  Recently, I was asked to prepare a Facebook like expandable textbox in a ASP.NET web application, where user can input text and the textbox can be re-sized (more specifically the height) dynamically. I searched for a while and found quite a lot of solutions that use jQuery (example). However, I was looking for something more intrinsic and simple, and finally I found another script on a forum that just use few lines of JavaScript codes: 1. • What options do I have for a Wedding Car website? [on hold]

  I currently run a Wedding Car website that is ranking in the top 5 for my local area, its not doing so well outside of that. I have listed the company in Google Business so it shows in the SERP and I have a Facebook and Twitter account linked, that I update regularly. I know keeping content fresh is important but nothing much changes so I am unsure what options I have? Should I create a blog and talk about the cars, weddings etc? I am totally unsure where to go with this website, the site currently has a few images and a small amount of text. Things I am considering, but would like advice on: A Mobile version of the website A Blog on the website A gallery page with pictures and descriptions Asking local companies to link to my website Essentially I have a small business website but not much content, because really there isnt! • A Better Way To Extract Date From DateTime Columns [SQL Server]

  Quite a long ago I wrote about a SQL Server programming tip on how to extract date part from a DATETIME column. The post discusses about using of T SQL function convert() to get date part. One of the readers of the post, tipped me about a better way of extracting date part and here is the SQL query he sent to us SELECT DateAdd(day, DateDiff(day, 0, getdate()), 0); In clean way this query trims off time part from the DATETIME value. I rate this solution better than the one I wrote long ago as this one does not depend on any string operations. According the commenter, this method is faster compared to the other. What do you say? • FatCow and iPage real deal?

  I need a cheap host that I can upgrade if needed for a startup. From searching, FatCow and iPage seem reliable and inexpensive web hosting services with a Unix OS and good bandwidth + disk space. I suspect they were bought from the same company. They propose to offer unlimited bandwidth/disc space and perks like AdSense/Facebook credit however, they're packages range from 1-3 years @ 3.15 USD/mo, there isn't a monthly package but they do allow you to cancel at anytime and there servers run on wind-mill generated energy which is a plus. I was suspicious because I couldnt seem to find one negative review about them, just affiliate pages until I read a review explaining they're strict policies on copywritten data. Has anyone experience with one of these two hosts?

• What good free forum engines are out there? [closed]

  I'm looking for a forum engine for my website, which will look modern, easy to use and follow lengthy discussions. Most of the times people hear "forum" they imagine unresponsive phpBB with terrible color scheme and unnecessarily huge user info sections (avatar, signature) about 600px high each, which make it impossible to see more than 5 posts on a really big screen. I'd like it to be the other way around with my future forum. Features I'd like to see: Clean, transparent section/thread selection, Must not have "message posted, you will be redirected to wherever" screens, 1-click message posting (captchas are ok, but not the ones that erase the whole post when you mistype), Tree hierarchy for comments to posts

  I am planing to build a website which one of its main features is the usage of pictures. I was wondering what existing techniques are used to prevent offensive pictures (i.e pornography) to get loaded by users. i.e What does Facebook or Pinterest use? As well I would like to know what your recommendations would be to control offensive pictures to get uploaded to the site (OpenSource tools maybe..) • Rsyslog problem after ubuntu upgrade 10.4 to 12.4

  I was using Ubuntu 10.4 until last week for storing the log informations of a external device with rsyslog. After upgrading to ubuntu 12.4 the logging of TCP doesn't works anymore. (There are just no pakets visible - not even with tcpdump - aold ubuntu machine still sees the pakets.) UDP works with the identical configuration on the ubuntu machine and a "use UDP" on the external device. Are there any changes in rsyslog, that could explain this? • To be or not to be: a solutions architech [closed]

  short version: as a student taking a summer internship, whats more useful for later in my career, taking a job as a solutions Architect, or a software engineer? Long version: I'm a CS major in my 3rd year, I've interviewed with some of the big companies and did not get job offers year (Morgan Stanley, Microsoft, FacebooK) but did receive offers from a startup. I actually got two offers from the same start up. I really like the startup and despite the (much) lower wage at it compared to a bigger company, I could do solutions architecture. Solutions architects (I think) work more on figuring out high level solutions directly for clients, so I'd be working often with a sales team and developers. Everyone knows what (generally) a software engineer does. And so my question is this: for my career, what would be more beneficial to a) know how to do, and b) have on my resume.

• I'm seeing a lot of a new format for title elements for major sites: a few tags, and only then the title of the site itself, is this now optimal SEO?

  I'm seeing a lot of sites go to a format similar to the one now in use by stackexchange sites (i.e. short topic - maybe a long topic - only finally the site's name). Is this optimal SEO? It seems kind weird both because I'm only begun to notice changes in this direction recently, and because it seems like it would make it harder to tell in search results which actual site you're visiting, even if the topic is one that matches. Still, sites like Facebook, StackOverflow, etc probably aren't wrong, so I'm wondering if I should try to make my sites use that format, going forwards...

• Installing php_apc.dll on wampsever [closed]

  I need your help. I'm trying to install php_apc.dll into my php directory. So far this is what i've done: I copied php_apc.dll to c:\wamp\bin\php\php5.3.0\ext. I've also restarted the server several times. But when i checked http://localhost/?phpinfo=1 There wasnt any evidence of APC Extension Installation. Please what i'm i doing wrong? I'll be most delighted with your answers, comments and suggestions. Thank you.

• Where should a programmer explain the extended logic behind the code?

  I have developed a few quantitative libraries in C# where it is important to understand not only the classic information that goes with the XMLDoc comments (which contains basic information with the method signature) but also the mathematical formulas being use within the methods. Hence I would like to be able to include extended documentation with the code, which could contain, for example Latex formulas, graphs, and so on. Do you think such information should be included in the API documentation? Or should it be included in a dev blog for examples? Are there common tools that are usually used for this kind of purposes?

• How to pass information across domains to ask for newsletter only once?

  Lets assume following scenario, I have two sites: example1.com example2.com When user visits 1 there is a prompt "please signup to a newsletter". Same thing happens when user visits 2. However when navigating from 1 to 2 I don't want signup form to be shown. My first thought were 3rd-party cookies, but it seems that they are blocked / not working: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4701922/how-does-facebook-set-cross-domain-cookies-for-iframes-on-canvas-pages?rq=1 http://stackoverflow.com/questions/172223/how-do-i-set-cookies-from-outside-domains-inside-iframes-in-safari?rq=1 Another thought is to append #noshow for each URL but that would require some work - for instance a script that would intercept click / tap events and modify URL structure depending on the address. (but that seems hacky) I wonder if you know a robust well-established solution to this issue? Thanks

• How could your company's learning/development department best serve you?

  I'll preface my question with a disclaimer - I am not an engineer, I'm just someone who works with them full-time, in a learning and development capacity. Given that, one of the comments I get regularly from the engineers I'm tasked with developing is that they feel that they're having solutions (both technical and non-technical) for development "pushed" at them vs. anyone from my field consulting with them to determine what they really need. So my question is - if you could give your company a list of the top 3-5 things they could do - in a classroom, or elsewhere - to develop meaningful skills that would help you be a better engineer, a better employee, and one more likely to STAY with the company for the long haul, what would make the cut and why?
