• Playing Blu-ray using VLC

  I've been searching for a way to play Blu-ray using VLC on Ubuntu 12.04 64bit and all of them tell me that I've to somehow rip the disk into .mkv format then play it. But today, I found a page with directions on how to play Blu-rays directly on VLC. I've already finished downloading and pasting the files it told me to do, But it didn't work for me. Then I found a page where someone had tried it and it worked for them. Does anyone know how they got it to work? The page with the directions. The page where it worked. I also found this Does anyone know what it is talking about? I've already downloaded lxBDplayer, but I encountered a problem when installing the lcbdaacs plugins. Are there any other ways to install the lxbdaacs plugin?

• Stop VLC player from saving effects & filter settings

  VLC Player v1.1.11 Windows 7 Ultimate VLC player launches each new video with setting I used once to brighten a dark video. On a second computer, VLC player opens all videos rotated 270 which was a feature I used once. I now have to manually uncheck Image adjust on one computer & uncheck Transform on another for each video to have it play without these custom settings. I've custom mapped VLC Hotkeys that I use extensively. As a result, I do not want to "reset preferences" and lose my Hotkey mapping. VLC Tools Settings Video Effects Basic Image Adjust (Brightness, Contrast, etc.) VLC Tools Settings Video Effects Basic Transform (Rotate 90, 180, 270) Is there a setting I'm not finding to stop VLC from applying a one time adjustment to all videos?

• vlc issue with unity

  I'm using ubuntu 12.04 with unity 3d. I am having troubles to lock vlc (version: VLC media player 2.0.1 Twoflower (revision 2.0.1-0-gf432547)) to the left panel. It doesn't behave the same way other applications do. This is a fresh install from the repo, I didn't change any settings. Ubuntu 12.04 is also a fresh install. For example, (left) clicking on it doesn't bring it to front, but creates a new instance (this in particular is very annoying, if it gets behind another window, that happens to be maximized, there is no way to bring it back up). It also doesn't have a right arrow to say the number of instances there is. Any way around that ?

• early audio offset in Audacity and VLC, but not Banshee

  I'm editing audio files with speech in Audacity, marking particular types of speech. I just noticed that files edited in Windows have different intervals marked than files edited in Ubuntu. After testing and confirming this error, it seems that the audio playback in Ubuntu clips the sound too early from the end (early offset), which causes the person doing the editing to mark the interval wrongly. Interestingly, the error appears in Audacity and VLC (which I sometimes use for playback), but NOT Banshee. Since both Audacity and VLC have this problem, I assume it is not application-specific. I don't know why Banshee handles this without problem though... Are there any ALSA or Pulseaudio settings that are likely to cause this problem (I know very little about either)? The task itself does not appear to consume large amounts of resources, but I am on an old laptop, so here are my specs: Ubuntu 11.10. Dell XPS m1210 1.6 GHz Intel Core, 2 x 512 Mb 667 MHz RAM, Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01). Audacity settings: Device Interface: ALSA (cannot select anything else)

• Tell VLC where to look for plugins.dat file

  I am trying to build vlc from source (I will include installation script below), but when I try to run vlc I get the following error main libvlc warning: cannot read /home/user/downloads/vlc3/vlc/src/.libs/vlc/plugins/plugins.dat (No such file or directory) Why is it even looking in that non existant directory? The plugins.dat file is in /usr/lib/vlc/plugins/. I tried export VLC_PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/lib/vlc/plugins/ But it still looks in that non existent path. I can create a symbolic link, but that is a terrible way to do it. If in 6 months I delete my downloads folder, all of a sudden my vlc will break. • Python coding with VLC player (quite a basic query I expect)

  I'm fairly new to the whole coding realm so my knowledge is fairly limited, and I can't seem to find any basic tutorials on how to use scripts with VLC player. More specifically, the reason I'm asking here is because I stumbled across a post on this site about playing random clips from random videos on VLC player automatically. This is the forum post: Playback random section from multiple videos changing every 5 minutes My situation is similar to this lovely gentleman's was, though he clearly knows a lot more about coding than I do. In short, I'd like to copy this coding into a file of some sort and apply it to VLC player myself. Only I'm not sure what file type I'd have to save it as (I have Python by the way, and I tried saving it as a .py file but I didn't know if it was correct or where to go from there). Additionally, I'm not sure how to get VLC to "read" the script, so to speak - is there a specific location the file needs to be, and do I run the script from another program or through VLC? I'll reiterate that I'm relatively new to this, so if anybody would be so kind as to post a quick list of steps on how to save/place the file and use it with VLC player I really would appreciate it! P.S. I'm not computer illiterate, I'm fine with most programs and I'd understand if you just said things like "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins" or "in VLC, select Tools Plugins and extensions", I just wouldn't catch on to anything about adding a line of coding that does something without being told exactly what to write! Then tried this: apt-get install dbus-1 But I got this: E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable) E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it? What do I do next?

• alsa doesn't won't in vlc

  Alsa Audio Output works fine from terminal aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav . But i got to change from default to Alsa Audio Output in vlc . Found in Tools Perfernces Audio Outputs The issue lie when i change it to Alsa i Loose all sound. When i leave it defualt i get a annoying Audio delay of like 200ms or 500ms. from what i have found you have to use Alsa Audio Outpu to fix that issue.

  I'm with problems at VLC. When I will go watch a movie, the video and sound be flickering I saw in some places that if i turn off the Compiz Animations it will works fine, but i dont want turn off the animations. Other solution that i saw was put in terminal the command: gstreamer-properties and set the video out to "X Window System (without Xv)" but this isnt working... Anyone have any idea how resolve this? Thanks..

• VLC Media Server

  We are using VLC on ubuntu, and trying to set up a streaming media server. We have the http interface working fine from remote computers, and we can also see the video playing as text if we don't screen VLC. Our problem is the output streaming. When we use the main VLC page you get when you goto the servers IP it does not save the output MRL (refreshing page it will go away, even after clicking save.) We tried to VLM page and it appears to work fine from the http page (it buffers, plays, timers go up when not paused, etc.) However, we still cannot connect remotely with a VLC client. The output parameters do save properly on the VLM page. We are noobs when it comes to this. Does anyone have a very to the point procedure of getting a file X to play and stream on ubuntu using VLC assuming VLC is installed?

• Ubuntu 14.04 VLC Subtitles - Will not attach (unable to drag/drop or upload while viewing)

  I'm new to Ubuntu and a long time user of VLC with the Windows OS. In Windows, I was able to drag and drop the .sfv file onto the playing video and the subtitles would be enabled. In Ubuntu I try to drag and drop the .sfv file and it acts as though the .sfv file is a video and stops the actual video from playing. When I try to attach the .sfv file (view - subtitles - select text subtitles) I'm able to see the .sfv file I'd like to attach/open, although once I click open the file doesn't attach itself to the video. Does anyone know how to help me with this situation? I'm 2 seasons deep into Breaking Bad and attempting to read the body language of the characters during the Spanish parts has gone on way too long. • VLC Ati Radeon 6870 Ubuntu 12.04 image skewed flicker

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 with ATI Radeon 6870 connected to my 40' Sharp TV. The video image is slightly jigged, like breaking a bit and slightly delayed. It just isn't smooth. The computer is very fast, like i7 with 12gb ram.   I'm trying to figure out how to use the server capabilities of VLC. More specifically, how to export an SDP file when RTP streaming. In chapter 4 in the section related to RTP Streaming examples for server and client are given: vlc -vvv input_stream --sout '#rtp{dst=192.168.0.12,port=1234,sdp=rtsp://server.example.org:8080/test.sdp}' vlc rtsp://server.example.org:8080/test.sdp It's not very clear to me how to make it actually work. I have tried these two commands for server and client using two cmd instances: vlc -I rc screen:// --sout=#rtp{dst=127.0.0.1,port=4444,sdp=rtsp://localhost:8080/test.sdp} vlc -I rc rtsp://localhost:8080/test.sdp Invoking the second command causes the first one to crash. The second command shows the error message "could not connect to localhost:8080".

• Debian: video problems with VLC

  I have a problem playing AVI divx files with VLC. Yesterday upon start VLC showed an error message complaining about divx codecs and refused to proceed. Today the player starts but the video is squashed horizontally (it occupies roughly 1/4th of the VLC window which is for the other part black). I'm on an updated testing system, and before yesterday VLC was playing fine. In the meantime - after a recent dist-upgrade - I cannot run X with proprietary ATI drivers anymore, I have to use the FOSS radeonhd ones instead. I don't know if that's related but I thought it could be worth mentioning (and by the way if anyone has suggestions about this problem too, that'd be very much appreciated). How can I fix VLC's problem?

• VLC volume only to 200%?

  According to this comment it seems that VLC could boost the audio volume up to 800% in the past versions. Today I installed VLC multimedia player version 2.0.5 and it is capable only to boost up to 200%! This is not much, considering that some youtube videos are very quiet. This is what I need VLC for - to boost up volume for quiet youtube videos. So, where's the problem? Was it actually 800% in the past? Did VLC really limit this from former 800% to current 200%? Is it possible to somehow achieve more boost with VLC? Or with other software? I am using Windows 7.

• How do I stop VLC from stealing my volume buttons

  when I press the volume buttons on my laptop, usually the system volume is changed. However, when I do this with VLC it "steals" the presses and adjusts it's own "volume" instead. The system volume is also changed. I can't find any way to turn this off in VLC. Does anyone know? Update: Sorry, some more details I should have included originally: VLC VERSION: 1.1.4 (and a few previous releases, back to about 1.1.0 or so, I think) OS: Win Vista Pro 32 HARDWARE: Dell 1720 laptop (the volume buttons are little buttons on the front of the unit, they may work something like "media" keyboard volume buttons) Update: The buttons seem to map to Ctrl+Alt+b and Ctrl+Alt+c (according to the shortcut key box in windows shortcut properties) but the VLC advanced preferences hotkeys screen doesn't list these as the keys it uses for volume. I changed it so there are no volume hotkeys in VLC settings - no luck it still steals the presses and adjusts the volume. Also, pressing Ctrl+Alt+b or c doesn't change my system volume, so who knows what windows or VLC are doing to recognise those volume buttons. :(

• Way to make video-thumbnails generate from VLC instead of Totem?

  I'm suffering from problem that video-thumbnails do not appear in nautilus for some video files. I just found this bug typefinding: some mpeg files are not identified as mpeg files which seems to address the problem. I don't understand the specifics as reported in this bug report, but it sounds like it's a problem with Totem's interaction with Gstreamer. Since all my videos play fine with VLC (and they don't all play with Totem), I don't use Totem very much. Is there a way to make VLC generate the video-thumbnails instead of having to rely on the buggy gstreamer/totem? I made VLC my default video player but this had no effect on the display of video-thumbnails. If Totem can't play the video file, then I get no thumbnail. But VLC can play the videos fine, so why can't VLC create a video-thumbnail for it?

• Windows 7: blue faces in VLC... sometimes

  Hi There are a bunch of forum posts about this issue from the last several years but no resolution that I could find. I have the newest VLC installed on Windows 7 with the newest nvidia drivers. Suddenly, VLC plays some videos in such a way as faces are blue. When viewed in another media player, or when looking at the thumbnails, this is not an issue. Other videos are not affected. I've tried resetting VLC options, deleting the VLC folder in the AppData area, etc. I have no other color issues. Does anyone have a fix?

  I have a single .flac file that encompasses multiple tracks comprising a music album along with the corresponding .cue file. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with VLC player, and am trying to get VLC player to show the individual tracks and allow me to use the previous and next controls to move back and forth between tracks. The problem I'm having is that when I open the single .flac file with VLC, it just shows a single track the duration of the entire album, and I'm unable to skip back and forth between tracks. Is there any way to have VLC show the individual tracks contained within a .flac file without having to pre-split the .flac file into individual track files first?

• VLC RTP Streaming in FC12

  I'm trying to get VLC to work streaming RTP audio/video over my office network. The goal is multicast a/v streaming. In all test cases, we are streaming from VLC to VLC. I am able to stream from Windows to Windows, and from Fedora to Windows, but not from Windows to Fedora. Additionally, I am unable to receive a LOCAL stream from one instance of VLC to another, within Fedora. I don't see any reason why this would be. The buffer indicator (where the elapsed/total time is normally displayed) never shows any connectivity, so it would appear to be a network problem, but since I am able to stream from Fedora to Windows (same IP, same port) I thought it would be something else. Does anyone know of a solution to this issue?

• Disabling VLC's crash message

  I have a Mac Mini running videos on loop to display publicly, which occasionally crashes I think generally when other OSX functions kicking in. I have a script to detect when VLC is not running and reboot it, but there is often a system message on top "VLC crashed previously". Is there a way to disable this (I can find no option in VLC's advanced options), or perhaps to feed a 'Continue' response to it via Applescript?
