• What Is StreamInsight? A Primer for Non-Programmers

  Are you trying to figure out whether StreamInsight might be something you could use, but you’re having trouble sifting through all the programming jargon that’s used to describe it? StreamInsight is, ultimately, a set of programming tools, and at some point it takes a programmer to implement a StreamInsight solution. But it really should be possible to get a handle on what StreamInsight is all about even if you’re not a programmer yourself. A new article published in the TechNet Wiki may be able to help: StreamInsight for Non-Programmers. It gives an overview of the technology, but it leaves out the C# references and relates StreamInsight to more familiar SQL databases and queries. Check it out. When you’re done there and are ready to dig a little deeper, take a look at Get Started with StreamInsight 2.1.   I'm trying to create a custom drop down and using the code below it works pretty well - only one problem is if i have more than one drop down, all the links will only activate the first drop down. Any ideas on how I would fix that? • Is it really wrong to version documents using CouchDB's default behaviour?

  This is one of those "I know I shouldn't do this but it's oh so convenient." questions. Sorry about that. I plan to use CouchDB for storing a bunch of documents and keeping their entire revision history. CouchDB does the versioning automatically, but it is strongly discouraged for programmer's use: "You cannot rely on document revisions for any other purpose than concurrency control." From what I've found on the CouchDB wiki, the versions can get deleted either during compaction or during replication. As far as I can tell, Compaction must always be triggered manually and Replication occurs only when there's more than one database server. The question is: if I won't run compaction and will use only single database instance for my documents, can I just use CouchDB's document versioning and expect it to work? What other problems I might run into? E.g. does not running compaction hurt the performance or consume significantly more disk space (than if I did handle the versioning manually)?

• What is a generalized form creator that runs on .NET / Windows?

  At the institution that I'm at, we've been looking for web applications that enable users to create and deploy their own forms. Similar applications are Wufoo, and google forms. Unfortunately, those solutions will not work for us, because we are required to host all data and information on our own servers. I've found a few solutions that are written in PHP, but at this point, it doesn't appear that this is acceptable. I've tried searching for ".net form creator" but unfortunately, when you search for ".net forms" you get a lot of results relating to created asp.net webforms, which is not what we're looking for at all. I've been told that finding a solution that runs on .NET and windows servers with either Oracle or MSSQL databases would be much more acceptable. I've found a few, but they are open source, and the IS Security people are not kind to those solutions, despite my attempts to show otherwise. If anyone knows of some solution out there, I would greatly appreciate you passing on the names of those applications!

• How to deal with presence or not of xml namespaces using xslt.

  I have some XML/TEI documents, and i'm writing an XSLT 2.0 to extract their content. Almost all TEI documents has no namespace, but one has the default namespace (xmlns="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"). So all documents has the same aspect, with unqulified tags like <TEI> or <teiHeader>, but if I try to extract the content, all works with "non-namespaced-documents", but nothing (of course) is extracted from the namespaced-document. So i used the attribute xpath-default-namespace="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0" and now (of course) the only document working is the namespaced one. I can't edit documents at all, so what I'm asking is if there's a way to change dynamically the xpath-default-namespace in order to make work xpaths like //teiHeader both with namespaced and non-namespaced documents

• Object drag delay issue

  I have this code that drags stuff around perfectly in IE - however in firefox the onmousedown-drag of the object does not immediately drag but shows the no-entry cursor and then after onmouseup the object drags around freely. The object does stop draging on the next onmouseup. The object should only drag in the onmousdown state, while the onmousup call should cancel the drag by making j_OK=0.   I need an account system added to my website as a plugin to all of my HTML pages. The account system plugin needs to,register new users, log in current users, remove users who want to disconnect service, and manipulate all of these things via database on my web server. However, I do not know how to program in the PHP language or create and manipulate MySQL databases. I want a program that can create and manipulate the MySQL database automatically for my website and handle also PHP calls automatically. Are there any open source freeware programs out there that i can use? If so what are the names of these freeware?

  In HTML5, CSS selectors seem to operate well with data-* attributes. But, attempts to select such elements using the selectors-api fail. • Strategies for Indexing Custom Fields in RavenDB

  In the relational database world, if I was developing a CRM system and wanted to have the user add their own custom fields that are searchable, I could have tables that store the name of the new column, the data type and the value, etc. (which would be less inefficient to index) or I could use the less elegant (but more searchable) solution that software like Dynamics and SharePoint use, whereas I create a load of columns on my aggregate root called CustomInt1, CustomInt2, etc. (which looks dirty and has a limit of how many custom fields a user can have, but has indexing advantages). But my questions is this, in NoSQL databases, what would be the best way of achieving the same thing? My priority would be for searchability. So what would be the best way to store this data? If I used a predefined set of properties (i.e. CustomData1, CustomData2, etc.), because these are all stored as JSON (i.e. strings) in the database, does this make it simpler because I don't have to worry about data types?

• A Question About Embedding HTML In PHP

  Hello all Some time ago I read a posting on a board where the person was talking poorly about people that have HTML embedded/within their PHP. I do quite a bit of PHP development but I still interleave HTML and PHP in the same document. Is there a better way to do this, am I doing it wrong? I know that in JSP/JSF they use an XML document with namespaces to insert their HTML code so I was wondering if there was a similar function that PHP uses that I should be taking advantage of. • Ajax to read updated values from XML

  I am creating file upload progress bar. I have a CGI script which copies the data, and here I increment the progress bar value by ONE after certain iterations. I am storing the incremented value in XML file (I also tried using plain text file). On the other side I have ajax reading incremented value from xml and depending on that it increments the DIV element. However, what happens here is, it seems to me that although the ajax reads all the incremented values but it processes it after the CGI has finished execution. That is progress bar starts execution once the file copying and other stuff in CGI is completed. • Find the xmlHttpRequest resource in aspx page

  I'm trying to find an xmlHttpRequest or similar resource that I can query directly to obtain an xml file for my own purposes. At this site it is possible to browse a Google Map mashup with markers. Unfortunately it is only possible to view all markers at a small view range, whereas I simply want to obtain all the information at once for the entire state. Using the firebug console in firefox I can enter the following javascript line to obtain the xml that I desire: document.getElementById("stationXML").value I tracked this document element down to an <input> tag, but I can't figure out how that input is set. • How to select a names from a column MS Excel 2007

  Hey guys, I have an Excel document which has a list of students and their group names. I have another sheet within the the same excel document which is called comments. In this sheet, I would like to have a list of individual team names listed. There are 65 students and 14 defined groups. Is there a way to select the 14 group names, without repitition? Cell B3-B67 have the student names. Cell C3-C67 have the team names. The team names are entered against each student. I know in SQL I could use something like select distinct(team_name) but in Excel, how can I replicate this? Cheers, Alks.

• Upload a file to SharePoint through the built-in web services

  What is the best way to upload a file to a Document Library on a SharePoint server through the built-in web services that version WSS 3.0 exposes? Following the two initial answers... We definitely need to use the Web Service layer as we will be making these calls from remote client applications. The WebDAV method would work for us, but we would prefer to be consistent with the web service integration method. There is additionally a web service to upload files, painful but works all the time. Are you referring to the “Copy” service? We have been successful with this service’s CopyIntoItems method. Would this be the recommended way to upload a file to Document Libraries using only the WSS web service API? I have posted our code as a suggested answer.

• pgf/tikz: String Symbols as Input Coordinates

  Hi all, I'm new to pgf so i was trying out some examples from the pgfplot manual. One example is especially relevant for my current task but, alas, it would not compile. Package PGF Math Error: Could not parse input 'a' as a floating point number, sorry. The unreadable part was near 'a'.. I have no clue how to correct this behavior. Other plots (smooth, scatter, bar), which contain only numerical data compile fine. Could anybody give me a hint? Cheers K.
