• Fulltext for innoDB? or a good solution for php app

  I have a table I want to run a fulltext search on, but it is currently innoDB and is using a lot of foreign keys for other kinds of queries. Should I make like a 1:1 "meta-data" table that is myisam for fulltext? Also I am reading some things that say that fulltext corrupts MySQL tables pretty randomly? I dunno, the articles are a couple years old, maybe they've fixed that in 5+? If not what's a good solution for searching? Zend_Lucene seems cool but slow, even with caching, for the client's large tables and autocomplete functionality et al.

• Building 16 bit os - character array not working

  Hi. I am building a 16 bit operating system. But character array does not seem to work. • In Ruby on Rails Routing I Would Like to Use Dash `-` Instead of Underscore `_`

  I would like all the URLs for my web applications to use dash - instead of underscore _ for word separators. I'm surprised about a couple of things really: Google et al. continue to distinguish them. That RoR doesn't have a simple global configuration parameter to map - to _ in the routing. Or does it? I found a few questions here and elsewhere, but the best solution I've seen is to use :as or a named route. That's quite annoying. So I'm thinking of modifying the Rails routing to check for that global config and change - to _ before dispatching to a controller action. But before I do that, I'm hoping someone can save me the trouble! Thanks in advance for any help, or even confirmation that my approach makes sense. I'd submit it back. BTW, I'm currently on 2.3.8, but hope to migrate to 3 soon.

• Django: How/Where to store a value for a session without unnecessary DB hits

  Hi all, I have an extended userprofile with AUTH_PROFILE_MODULE (ref: http://tinyurl.com/yhracqq) I would like to set a user.is_guru() method similar to user.is_active(). This would results for al views (or rather templates) to e.g. disable/enable certain user messages, displaying of widgets, etc. The boolean is stored in the extended user profile model, but I want to avoid hitting the DB for every view. So the questions is .. Do I use a context_processor, a template tag, session_dict or what have you to, possible cached, store this info for the duration of the users visit. Note: I dont have performance issues, so it's definitely filed under premature optimization. I just want to avoid generating extra work in the future :). Any pointers are very welcome. • SQL Server 2008 + expensive union all

  Hi al, we have 5 tables over which we should query with user search input throughout a stored procedure. We do a union all of the similar data inside a view. Because of this the view can not be materialized. We are not able to change these 5 tables drastically (like creating a 6th table that contains the similar data of the 5 tables and reference that new one from the 5 tables). The query is rather expensive / slow what are our other options? It's allowed to think outside the box. Unfortunately I cannot give more information like the table/view/SP definition because of customer confidentiality... greetings, Tim

Can it come from a program in the USB itself as well? Not doing any actual coding yet. Btw- if that default window with al the options has a special name plz tell me. • FileInputStream and FileOutputStream to the same file: Is a read() guaranteed to see all write()s that "happened before"?

  I am using a file as a cache for big data. One thread writes to it sequentially, another thread reads it sequentially. Can I be sure that all data that has been written (by write()) in one thread can be read() from another thread, assuming a proper "happens-before" relationship in terms of the Java memory model? Is this behavior documented? EDIT: In my JDK, FileOutputSream does not override flush(), and OutputStream.flush() is empty. That's why I'm wondering... EDIT^2: The streams in question are owned exclusively by a class that I have full control of. Each stream is guaranteed to be accesses by one thread only. My tests show that it works as expected, but I'm still wondering if this is guaranteed and documented. • Can I run multiple websites under a single membership database?

  Hi all, I'm trying to plan a series of websites that all share many of the resources such as css/jscript/images/content etc. For this reason I wanted to run all of the websites under the same application and IIS profile, but depending on the URL being used change the masterpage and theme/skin. The ASP.NET membership database seems as if it was designed with this goal in mind because it allows you to setup multiple applications, however I believe the purpose for which this was built was to allow applications to be run under virtual directories/fodlers, not on seperate urls. Is it possible to map a url to a particular application? Thanks in advance Al

  in C++ Primer 4th edition 2.1.1, it says "when assigning an out-of-range value to a signed type, it is up to the compiler to decide what value to assign". I can't understand it. I mean, if you have code like "char 5 = 299", certainly the compiler will generate asm code like "mov BYTE PTR _sc$[ebp], 43"(VC) or "movb $43, -2(%ebp)"(gcc+mingw), it IS decided by the compiler. but what if we assign a value that is given by the user input? like, via command line? and the asm code generated will be "movb %al, -1(%ebp)"(gcc+mingw) and " mov cl, BYTE PTR _i$[ebp] mov BYTE PTR _sc$[ebp], cl "(VC), so now how can compiler decide what will happen? I think now it is decided by the CPU. Can you give me a clear explanation?

• ASP.Net website makes browser load unwanted (non-referenced) plugins

  I've found that some of my ASP.Net web apps prompt the browser to load plugins that I'm not explicitely using and certainly haven't deliberately referenced in the project settings. Two that come to mind are for MS MediaPlayer and the "SVG Viewer for Netscape". The only commonality I've determined so far is that the two sites/apps affected both use Master pages (nested in some cases). We don't use SVG file types (just the normal mix of jpg/gif/png) and no video/audio (not yet anyway). Can anyone provide a hint as to where the references for these might be creeping in? e.g. Is it a server-level include? Or a .Net runtime default when using master pages? Does anyone else even experience this, or is it just me? No urgency, I'd just like to remove it if possible. Thanks. Al

• How to determine bandwidth used by cron job?

  I'm not a unix guy. CPanel does a good job of managing cronjobs and that is what I used to run dozens of cronjobs. All of them combined run more than 5000 times every day. Every cron makes a call to an external API. How can I check how much bandwidth are all the cron jobs eating? For my website I use awstats and that shows bandwidth usage et al. Another thing is that I dont want the admins to ban the cron jobs because they are using too much bandwidth (and CPU), more than what is allocated in my web hosting package.

• In a Windows forms application, how can I use a listbox in a DataGridView coloumn instead of a combo

  I'm working on a windows forms application that uses a DataGridView. Some of the cells contain a DataGridViewComboBox. In some cases, I have several values to display in the combobox. For that scenario, it would be better to use a ListBox instead of a ComboBox. Is it possible to use a multi-column listbox within a DataGridView instead of a ComboBox? • Failure retrieving contents of directory

  Currently I have a couple of websites. My problem is that if I login on 1 specific domain with any of my programs (using notepadd++, FileZilla and Netbeans) the program stops at the content listing. I had it correctly running, (I'm working on a project on this domain for more than a year now) and suddenly I broke it somehow. This only happens on 1 specific domain, all other domains (from other hosts) are working. My colleague (next to me with same ip address) is able to login on this domain. Notepadd++ says: Failure retrieving contents of directory Filezilla says: Failed to retrieve directory listing Netbean popups: Upload files on save failed. (Because I have the setting upload on save enabled.) What I tried: First I thought it's my firewall, I disabled firewall but no result. Also notice that all other domain are working. Maby a blacklist with my ip address? No my colleague has the same ip address. Could anyone help me on this? • Instalar SQL Server 2008

  En este post trataré de explicar los pasos para la instalación de SQL y su posterior configuración. Primer paso: Instalación de las reglas de Soporte (Setup Support Rules) Está será la primer pantalla de instalación con la que nos toparemos cuando tratemos de instalar sql server. En ella, únicamente debemos dar clic en siguiente(next). Paso 2: Selección de las características de instalación de SQL Server (Feature Selection) Este es a mi parecer el paso mas importante del proceso de instalación de SQL, pues es el que nos permitirá seleccionar todos los componentes que este tendrá posteriormente Acá lo importante es: Servicios de bases de datos y herramientas de administración. Todas las demás son plus del motor.   Paso 3: Configuración de la Instancia En este paso, no debemos preocuparnos por nada. Únicamente presionamos siguiente. Paso 4: Requerimientos de espacio en disco Nuevamente en esta instancia no tendremos trabajo alguno. Únicamente es una pantalla informativa de SQL en donde se muestra el espacio actual del disco y el espacio que la instalación de SQL Server consumirá. Presionamos siguiente (next). Paso 5: Configuración del servidor Este paso es uno de los mas importantes, pues en el le indicaremos a SQL que usuario utilizará para autenticarse y levantar cada uno de los servicios que hayamos seleccionado al inicio. Generalmente cuando se trabaja en local el usuario NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM es la mejor opción. Si en este paso, seleccionamos un usuario con permisos insuficientes SQL nos dará un error. Presionamos siguiente (next) Paso 6: Configuración del motor de bases de datos En este paso, nos enfocaremos en la pestaña Account Provisioning, que será en la que le indiquemos el usuario con el que el motor de bases de datos funcionará por defecto. Lo mas recomendado sería hacer clic en la opción add current user, la cual agregará el usuario de windows  que se encuentre en ese momento. También, podremos seleccionar si queremos el modo de autenticación de SQL o el modo Mixto, que incluye autenticación de SQL Server y Windows. Para nuestra instalación seleccionaremos unicamente modo de autenticación de SQL. Una vez que agregamos el usuario presionamos siguiente (next) Paso 7:  Finalizar la configuración Luego de los pasos anteriores, las demás pantallas no requieren nada especial. Únicamente presionar siguiente y esperar a que la instalación de SQL termine.

• Mejores prácticas de Recursos Humanos: Cross Company Mentoring

  Una de las cosas positivas de trabajar en una gran organización como Oracle es la posibilidad de participar en iniciativas de gran alcance que normalmente no están disponibles en muchas empresas. Ayer se presentó, junto con American Express y CocaCola, la tercera edición del programa Cross Company Mentoring, una iniciativa en la que las tres empresas colaboran facilitando mentores (profesionales experimentados) para promover el desarrollo profesional de individuos de talento en las tres empresas. La originalidad del programa estriba en que los mentores colaboran con el desarrollo de los profesionales de las otras empresas participantes y no sólo con los propios. La presentación inicial fue realizada por Alfredo García-Valverde, presidente de American Express en España. Posteriormente, Julia B. López, de American Express, y Rosa María Arias, de Oracle (en ese orden en la foto), han detallado en qué consiste la iniciativa, además de hacer balance de la edición anterior. Aunque este programa -complementario de los que ya funcionan en las tres empresas- está disponible para hombres y mujeres, hay que destacar que buena parte de su razón de ser está en potenciar el papel de mujeres profesionales de talento en las compañías. En términos generales, todas las grandes organizaciones se encuentran con un problema similar en el desarrollo del talento femenino. Independientemente del número de mujeres que formen parte de la plantilla de la empresa, lo cierto es que su número decrece de forma drástica cuando hablamos de los puestos directivos. La ruptura de ese "techo de cristal" es una prioridad para las empresas, tanto por motivos de simple justicia social, como por aprovechar al máximo todo el potencial del talento que ya existe dentro de las organizaciones, evitando que el talento femenino se "pierda" por no poder facilitar las oportunidades adecuadas para su desarrollo. La iniciativa de Cross Company Mentoring tiene unos objetivos bien definidos. En primer lugar, desarrollar el talento con un método innovador que permite conocer las mejores prácticas en otras empresas y aprovechar el talento externo. Adicionalmente, como ha señalado Julia López, es un método que nos fuerza a salir de la zona de confort, de las prácticas tradicionalmente aceptadas dentro de cada organización y que difícilmente se ponen en cuestión. El segundo objetivo es que el Mentee, el máximo beneficiario del programa, aprenda de la experiencia de profesionales de gran trayectoria para desarrollar sus propias soluciones en los retos que le plantee su carrera profesional. El programa que se ha presentado ahora, la tercera edición, arrancará en el próximo mes y estará vigente hasta finales de año. Seguro que tendrá tanto éxito como en las dos ediciones anteriores.

• Book Review: Inside Windows Communicat?ion Foundation by Justin Smith

  In gearing up for a new major project, I have taken it upon myself to research and review various aspects of our Microsoft stack of choice seeking new creative ways for us to leverage in our upcoming state-of-the-art solution projected to position us ahead of the competition. While I am a big supporter of search engines and online articles as a quick and usually reliable source of information, I have opted in my investigative quest to actually “hit the books”.  I have also made it a habit to provide quick reviews for material I go over hoping this can be of help to someone who may be looking for items others may have had success using for reference. I have started a few months ago by investigating better ways to implementing, profiling and troubleshooting SQL Server 2008. My reference of choice was Itzik Ben-Gan et al’s “Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2008” series. While it has been a month since my last book review, this by no means meant that I have been sitting idle. It has been pretty challenging to balance research with the continuous flow of projects and deadlines all while balancing that with my family duties which, of course, always comes first. In this post, I will be providing a quick review of my latest reading: Inside Windows Communication Foundation by Justin Smith. This book has been on my reading list for a very long time and I am proud to have finally tackled it. Justin’s book presents a great coverage of WCF internals. His simple, concise and well-worded style has simplified the relatively complex internals of WCF and made it comprehensible. Justin opted to organize the book into three parts: an introduction to WCF, coverage of the Channel Layer and a look at WCF internals at the ServiceModel layer. Part I introduced the concepts and made the case behind WCF while covering a simplified version of WCF’s message patterns, endpoints and contracts. In Part II, Justin provided a thorough coverage of the internals of Messages, Channels and Channel Managers. Part III concluded this nice reading with coverage of Bindings, Contracts, Dispatchers and Clients. While one would not likely need to extend WCF at that low level of the API, an understanding of the inner-workings of WCF is a must to avoid pitfalls mainly caused by misinformation or erroneous assumptions. Problems can quickly arise in high-traffic hosted solutions, but most can be easily avoided with some minimal time investment and education. Date, Nikos Lorentzos and Hugh Darwen: Time and Relational Theory, Second Edition: Temporal Databases in the Relational Model and SQL – all theory needed to manage temporal data. Louis Davidson, Jessica M. Moss: Pro SQL Server 2012 Relational Database Design and Implementation – the best SQL Server focused data modeling book I know by two of my friends. Dejan Sarka, et al.: MCITP Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-441): Designing Database Solutions by Using Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2005 – SQL Server 2005 data modeling training kit. Most of the text is still valid for SQL Server 2008, 2008 R2, 2012 and 2014. Itzik Ben-Gan, Lubor Kollar, Dejan Sarka, Steve Kass: Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2008 T-SQL Querying – Steve wrote a chapter with mathematical background, and I added a chapter with theoretical introduction to the relational model. Itzik Ben-Gan, Dejan Sarka, Roger Wolter, Greg Low, Ed Katibah, Isaac Kunen: Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2008 T-SQL Programming – I added three chapters with theoretical introduction and practical solutions for the user-defined data types, dynamic schema and temporal data. Dejan Sarka, Matija Lah, Grega Jerkic: Training Kit (Exam 70-463): Implementing a Data Warehouse with Microsoft SQL Server 2012 – my first two chapters are about data warehouse design and implementation. • Oracle 12cR1 : Evaluación "What-If" de un comando crsctl con Oracle Clusterware

  Oracle en su nueva version 12cR1 introdujo una nueva y pequeña característica  al Oracle Clusterware, pero el que sea pequeña, no significa que no sea de gran utilidad. En versiones anteriores, si queríamos saber que iba a pasar al ejecutar un comando con la herramienta crsctl, teníamos que hacerlo en un ambiente de pruebas, ya que si no sabíamos de que se trataba el comando, se convertía en algo muy peligroso hacerlo sobre producción. En Oracle Clusterware 12cR1 se introduce la evaluación de comando tipo "What-If" en la herramienta mencionada anteriormente, crsctl eval, que lo que nos permite es ver , que va a suceder si ejecuta el comando, sin que realmente se ejecute el comando. • How can I fix these errors with Panda3D's sample projects?

  I just installed the latest Panda3D packages on a Mint 12 32-bit virtual machine. Then I downloaded and configured Eclipse and tried to run the Asteroids sample project. The window is created properly. But after rendering the scence once the game freezes. This happens with the other sample apps, too. Here's the error log: DirectStart: Starting the game.
