  • Do you ever create fake progress bars?

    - by wrongusername
Do you (and would you) ever create progress bars that are just there to keep the client happy and moves without reflecting the true progress of the program? I remember reading about this somewhere, and am wondering if there are other developers that do it too...

  • How to force PyYAML to load strings as unicode objects?

    - by Petr Viktorin
The PyYAML package loads unmarked strings as either unicode or str objects, depending on their content. I would like to use unicode objects throughout my program (and, unfortunately, can't switch to Python 3 just yet). Is there an easy way to force PyYAML to always strings load unicode objects? I do not want to clutter my YAML with !!python/unicode tags. # Encoding: UTF-8 import yaml menu= u"""--- - spam - eggs - bacon - crème brûlée - spam """ print yaml.load(menu) Output: ['spam', 'eggs', 'bacon', u'cr\xe8me br\xfbl\xe9e', 'spam'] I would like: [u'spam', u'eggs', u'bacon', u'cr\xe8me br\xfbl\xe9e', u'spam']

  • getting JSlider bar to move on mouse click event

    - by Aly
Hi, I have a JSlider which shows bet sizes (for a poker game) I am trying to achieve the effect that when a mouse click occurs the slider jumps forward by a bet amount (i.e. a big blind amount) rather than just incrementing by one. If the mouse click happens to the left of the bar i want it to decrement by a fixed amount else increment. I looked into attaching a mouse listener, but do not know how I can use the event to find out on what side of the bar the mouse was clicked. Any ideas?

  • Dynamic UI vs Static UI

    - by Damien
I've been wondering, at what point should I give up the convenience of a static data entry form with designer support for a dynamic UI which removes a lot of code duplication? There seems to be a conflict in the programming world where people constantly try to remove code repetition to improve maintainability and yet when it comes to forms, that all goes out of the window and everything gets added explicitly to the forms. What signs should I look for to know when it's time to leave the designer in the dust and create a dynamic UI?

  • UI Design Help / Advice

    - by Greg Andora
Hey everyone, I have a dillema where our client relations department has been brought in for advice on UI and I vehemently disagree with it...even though I don't consider myself a designer at all. While I have been vocal about my disagreement about it, I've been asked to point to design standards to prove that what I'm saying is correct and that the guys in Client Relations are flat out wrong. A mockup is below, I'm trying to argue that the icons of the airplane, boat, and couch (ya, I didn't choose those either) belong in the header of the page (same area as the logo) and not in the content area of the page. Can anybody please help me by pointing me to something that helps prove my point? Thanks a lot, Greg Andora

  • Appscript to write iTunes artwork

    - by Kartik Aiyer
I'm trying to capture artwork from a pict file and embed into a track on iTunes using python appscript. I did something like this: imFile = open('/Users/kartikaiyer/temp.pict','r') data = imFile.read() it = app('iTunes') sel = it.current_track.get() sel.artworks[0].data_.set(data[513:]) I get an error OSERROR: -1731 MESSAGE: Unknown object Similar applescript code looks like this: tell application "iTunes" set the_artwork to read (POSIX file "/Users/kartikaiyer/temp.pict") from 513 as picture set data of artwork 1 of current track to the_artwork end tell I tried using ASTranslate but it never instantiates 'the_artwork' and then throws an error when there is a reference to the_artwork. Can anyone help. I'm new to appscript and python in general.

  • How to access the theming Fonts and Colors on GTK/Gnome

    - by Lothar
Lets say i want to write a special text editor widget. How can i get the default themed colors for texts, selected text and background and which are the users default fonts? I see that GNOME does define 5 special system fonts and default sizes for this purpose in the GNOME Appearance Configuration dialog, but i haven't found a single word in the GTK documentation how to access them (and the GTK mailing list is a joke:-( ). Windows and Cocoa both give me dozens of system values. I found the GtkStyle class but this doesn't seem to be what i need.

  • Java - Problem in JTree

    - by Yatendra Goel
There are 2 JTree: JTree1 and JTree2. Note that the nodes (country, city, colors, blue ...) all will be implemented as JCheckboxes so that user can select particular colors for each city or for the whole country by selecting their corresponding checkboxes. Problems: Q1. I want that each country or city can have its own colors selected. Means if a user wants city1.1 to have colors blue and violet and city2.1 to have colors red, then he first have to select the city1.1 checkbox and then select blue and violet, and after that when he selects city2.1, then the checkboxes blue and violet are deselected automatically so that user can select the colors for city2.1. But when the user selects the city1.1 again, then the JTree2should show the selected colors (bule and violet) for city1.1. So for this purpose, Is the JTree (with its nodes as checkboxes) correct option to implement or I should use some other JComponent? If JTree is a correct option, then how can I remember the colors of each city?

  • Is there a Grid plugin for jQuery that has similiar capabilities to the Ext-JS Grid?

    - by Ehrann Mehdan
One of the most appealing features of Ext-JS is the Grid control in my opinion. I was searching for something free that does something close and have set my hopes on jQuery. I haven't found a jQuery (or other LGPL compatible) Table / Grid plugin that allows to: Reorder columns by dragging Resize columns by dragging Add or Remove columns on the fly Have a default good looking UI (subjective, but Ext-JS look I think is a concensus) In addition to the rest most grid controls have (Sort, Paging etc) Is there a free (LGPL) jQuery plugin that does the above?

  • Avoid the collapsing effect on TreeView after updating data

    - by Manolete
    I have a TreeView used to display events. It works great, however every time new events are coming in and populating the tree collapse the tree again to the original position. That is very annoying when the refresh time is less than 1 second and it does not allow the user to interact with the items of the tree. Is there any way to avoid this behaviour? <TreeView Margin="1" BorderThickness="0" Name="eventsTree" ItemsSource="{Binding EventAlertContainers}" Background="#00000000" ScrollViewer.VerticalScrollBarVisibility="Auto" FontSize="14" VirtualizingStackPanel.IsVirtualizing="True"> <TreeView.Resources> <HierarchicalDataTemplate DataType="{x:Type C:EventAlertContainer}" ItemsSource="{Binding EventAlerts}"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <Image Width="20" Height="20" Margin="3,0" Source="Resources\Process_info_32.png" /> <TextBlock FontWeight="Bold" FontSize="16" Text="{Binding Description}" /> </StackPanel> </HierarchicalDataTemplate> <HierarchicalDataTemplate DataType="{x:Type C:EventAlert}" ItemsSource="{Binding Events}"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <Image Width="20" Height="20" Margin="0,0" Source="Resources\clock2_32.jpg" /> <TextBlock FontWeight="DemiBold" FontSize="14" Text="{Binding Name}" /> </StackPanel> </HierarchicalDataTemplate> <HierarchicalDataTemplate DataType="{x:Type C:Event}"> <StackPanel Orientation="Horizontal"> <Image Width="20" Height="20" Margin="0,0" Source="Resources\Task_32.png" /> <StackPanel Orientation="Vertical"> <TextBlock FontSize="12" Text="{Binding Name}" /> </StackPanel> </StackPanel> </HierarchicalDataTemplate> </TreeView.Resources> </TreeView>

  • EDIT Control Showing Squares Instead Of Returns

    - by Nathan Campos
I'm playing a little bit with PocketC by doing a simple text editor. But with this code to read and to display the contents of the file on the EDIT control: int filehandle; int file_len; string file_mode; initComponents() { createctrl("EDIT", "test", 2, 1, 0, 24, 70, 25, TEXTBOX); wndshow(TEXTBOX, SW_SHOW); guigetfocus(); } main() { filehandle = fileopen(OpenFileDlg("Plain Text Files (*.txt)|*.txt; All Files (*.*)|*.*"), 0, FILE_READWRITE); file_len = filegetlen(filehandle); if(filehandle == -1) { MessageBox("File Could Not Be Found!", "Error", 3, 1); } initComponents(); editset(TEXTBOX, fileread(filehandle, file_len)); } It's all ok, but my test file, now have returns: Hello, World! PocketC Test Of My Editor Then when I open this file on the editor, instead of returns, I just see two squares(that means that it's a unknown character for that control), but if I change the control to a STATIC, it does he returns ok, but I can't edit the text if I use a STATIC. Then I want to know what I need to do to do the returns instead of showing those squares.

  • iPhone - Bug using CADisplayLink and UIControls - bad to mix openGL and UIControls?

    - by Adam
Having had problems using other methods, I've decided to stick with CADisplayLink to run my game loop. The animation is smooth now, but sometimes there's a problem where the buttons and other UI elements can't be used, can't be accessed by touch or changed programmatically. This includes UIButtons and UILabels. Has anyone encountered this before? Is it not a good idea in general to use interface builder and uicontrols on top of an OpenGL view? I've heard they don't play well together but haven't heard the reasons. Thanks!

  • Using repaint() method.

    - by owca
    I'm still struggling to create this game : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2844190/choosing-design-method-for-ladder-like-word-game .I've got it almost working but there is a problem though. When I'm inserting a word and it's correct, the whole window should reload, and JButtons containing letters should be repainted with different style. But somehow repaint() method for the game panel (in Main method) doesn't affect it at all. What am I doing wrong ? Here's my code: Main: import java.util.Scanner; import javax.swing.*; import java.awt.*; public class Main { public static void main(String[] args){ final JFrame f = new JFrame("Ladder Game"); Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in); System.out.println("Creating game data..."); System.out.println("Height: "); //setting height of the grid while (!sc.hasNextInt()) { System.out.println("int, please!"); sc.next(); } final int height = sc.nextInt(); /* * I'm creating Grid[]game. Each row of game contains Grid of Element[]line. * Each row of line contains Elements, which are single letters in the game. */ Grid[]game = new Grid[height]; for(int L = 0; L < height; L++){ Grid row = null; int i = L+1; String s; do { System.out.println("Length "+i+", please!"); s = sc.next(); } while (s.length() != i); Element[] line = new Element[s.length()]; Element single = null; String[] temp = null; String[] temp2 = new String[s.length()]; temp = s.split(""); for( int j = temp2.length; j>0; j--){ temp2[j-1] = temp[j]; } for (int k = 0 ; k < temp2.length ; k++) { if( k == 0 ){ single = new Element(temp2[k], 2); } else{ single = new Element(temp2[k], 1); } line[k] = single; } row = new Grid(line); game[L] = row; } //############################################ //THE GAME STARTS HERE //############################################ //create new game panel with box layout JPanel panel = new JPanel(); panel.setLayout(new BoxLayout(panel, BoxLayout.Y_AXIS)); panel.setBackground(Color.ORANGE); panel.setBorder(BorderFactory.createEmptyBorder(10, 10, 10, 10)); //for each row of the game array add panel containing letters Single panel //is drawn with Grid's paint() method and then returned here to be added for(int i = 0; i < game.length; i++){ panel.add(game[i].paint()); } f.setContentPane(panel); f.pack(); f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); f.setVisible(true); boolean end = false; boolean word = false; String text; /* * Game continues until solved() returns true.   • Ubuntu One Folder Sync Filter

    - by Andy Barlow
Hi, I am trying to modify the Ubuntu One File syncing python scripts to not including things like .iso's. I have got as far as finding this file: /usr/share/pyshared/ubuntuone/u1sync/constants.py Inside is this piece of code: import re # the name of the directory u1sync uses to keep metadata about a mirror METADATA_DIR_NAME = u".ubuntuone-sync" # filenames to ignore SPECIAL_FILE_RE = re.compile(".*\\.(" "(u1)?partial|part|" "(u1)?conflict(\\.[0-9]+)?)$") How can I edit this last section (regex?) and make it ignore .iso files??? I'm fairly sure this is the place to put it! Pretty sure this is standard python action :) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks kindly. Andy

  • How to create a drop down menu in MFC for WINCE

    - by ame
    I have tried the following code in a win32 app that shows a drop down menu on clicking a button. However, this does not work in WinCE as MENUINFO is not defined. Is there any way I can get around this? I need to view a drop down menu on clicking a button, and the name appearing on the button changes depending on the option on the menu. void CTestDlg::OnBnClickedBtnMenu() { if( NULL == m_PopUpMenu.m_hMenu ) { m_PopUpMenu.SetMenuDimension( 120 ); m_PopUpMenu.CreatePopupMenu(); m_PopUpMenu.AppendMenu( MF_STRING | MF_ENABLED | MF_OWNERDRAW, 697, _T("A") ); m_PopUpMenu.AppendMenu( MF_STRING | MF_ENABLED | MF_OWNERDRAW, 697, _T("B") ); m_PopUpMenu.AppendMenu( MF_STRING | MF_ENABLED | MF_OWNERDRAW, 697, _T("C") ); m_PopUpMenu.AppendMenu( MF_STRING | MF_ENABLED | MF_OWNERDRAW, 697, _T("D") ); MENUINFO MenuInfo; memset( &MenuInfo, 0, sizeof(MENUINFO) ); MenuInfo.cbSize = sizeof(MENUINFO); MenuInfo.fMask = MIM_STYLE; MenuInfo.dwStyle = MNS_NOTIFYBYPOS; m_PopUpMenu.SetMenuInfo( &MenuInfo ); }

  • How can I enable Vista/Win 7 theming/style for a ToolTip control?

    - by Joakim Hårsman
In Windows Vista and Windows 7, ToolTips have a new visual style or theme, they are shiny grey metallic. How can I enable the new style for a ToolTip control? Some controls, like ListViews and ToolBars, use the new tooltips automatically, but other tooltips are rendered with the old yellow XP style. I've tried sending an TTM_SETWINDOWTHEME message but nothing happens and I'm not sure what string I am supposed to use for the visual style name. SetWindowTheme doesn't work either, I've used it successfully on ListViews and TreeViews to set the "Explorer" style (see http://www.danielmoth.com/Blog/TreeViewVista.aspx), but that doesn't seem to work on ToolTips. I'm using the plain win32 C API.

  • Swing: Scroll to bottom of JScrollPane, conditionally on current viewport location

    - by I82Much
Hi all, I am attempting to mimic the functionality of Adium and most other chat clients I've seen, wherein the scrollbars advance to the bottom when new messages come in, but only if you're already there. In other words, if you've scrolled a few lines up and are reading, when a new message comes in it won't jump your position to the bottom of the screen; that would be annoying. But if you're scrolled to the bottom, the program rightly assumes that you want to see the most recent messages at all times, and so auto-scrolls accordingly. I have had a bear of a time trying to mimic this; the platform seems to fight this behavior at all costs. The best I can do is as follows: In constructor: JTextArea chatArea = new JTextArea(); JScrollPane chatAreaScrollPane = new JScrollPane(chatArea); // We will manually handle advancing chat window DefaultCaret caret = (DefaultCaret) chatArea.getCaret(); caret.setUpdatePolicy(DefaultCaret.NEVER_UPDATE); In method that handles new text coming in: boolean atBottom = isViewAtBottom(); // Append the text using styles etc to the chatArea if (atBottom) { scrollViewportToBottom(); } public boolean isAtBottom() { // Is the last line of text the last line of text visible? Adjustable sb = chatAreaScrollPane.getVerticalScrollBar(); int val = sb.getValue(); int lowest = val + sb.getVisibleAmount(); int maxVal = sb.getMaximum(); boolean atBottom = maxVal == lowest; return atBottom; } private void scrollToBottom() { chatArea.setCaretPosition(chatArea.getDocument().getLength()); } Now, this works, but it's janky and not ideal for two reasons. By setting the caret position, whatever selection the user may have in the chat area is erased. I can imagine this would be very irritating if he's attempting to copy/paste. Since the advancement of the scroll pane occurs after the text is inserted, there is a split second where the scrollbar is in the wrong position, and then it visually jumps towards the end. This is not ideal. Before you ask, yes I've read this blog post on Text Area Scrolling, but the default scroll to bottom behavior is not what I want. Other related (but to my mind, not completely helpful in this regard) questions: Setting scroll bar on a jscrollpane Making a JScrollPane automatically scroll all the way down. Any help in this regard would be very much appreciated.

  • Emacs shell output buffer height

    - by jimbo
Hi , i have the following in my .emacs file(thanks to a SOer nikwin), which evaluates the current buffer content and displays the output in another buffer. (defun shell-compile () (interactive) (save-buffer) (shell-command (concat "python " (buffer-file-name)))) (add-hook 'python-mode-hook (lambda () (local-set-key (kbd "\C-c\C-c") 'shell-compile))) The problem is that the output window takes half the emacs screen. Is there any way to set the output windows's height to something smaller. I googled for 30mins or so and could not find anything that worked. Thanks in advance.

  • UI Controls layer on top of operating system.

    - by Mason Blier
I'm kind of curious about what layer writing a UI platform to the level of Win32 or the X Windowing System would fall in the grand scheme of an operating system. What layers below do they primarily make use of, is it heavily based on direct communication with the graphics card driver (I can't imagine going though a rendering pipeline like OpenGL for this), or is there a graphical platform as part of the operating system which extracts this out a little more. I'm also interested in the creation of shells and the like, and I"m particularly curious as to how people go about creating alternative shells for windows, what do people look for when figuring out what methods to call or what to hook into, etc? I guess I'm fairly lost at these concepts and finding it difficult to find documentation on them. I was initially excited to have taken Operating Systems in college but it was all low level resource management stuff. Thanks all, Mason

  • Downgrading to pyobjc 2.0 from pyobjc 2.2

    - by maxdj
I accidentally installed pyobjc 2.2 with easy-install pyobjc, and it's causing problems: When I try to import it I get the error Incompatible library version: _objc.so requires version 10.0.0 or later, but libxml2.2.dylib provides version 9.0.0 I'm not interested in fixing that though, all I want is my pyobjc 2.0 back. I've tried removing pyobjc 2.2 and reinstalling python, and I've tried building 2.0 from the svn trunk (I get the error lipo: can't figure out the architecture of [random filename].out) I imagine there must be a good way of doing this but it escapes me. Any insight would be appreciated. Edit: Python 2.6 and OSX 10.5

  • A very weird problem with texbox control in .net

    - by Kazoom
Well i know textbox is a very simple user control, perhaps the first input control ever made. I have been facing a very frustrating problem with this simple control. I programatically add a textbox in my user control. From ui i am able to edit it like a normal textbox. however, i am not able to read the user inputed value in the program. my program all the time sees the old value with which my text box was initialized. i textchange event getting triggered but the value never gets updated. This seemingly looks to be some innocuous bug in the code, but the program is very simple and it does not seem to be having any bug. Any guidelines on this issue?

  • Getting readline to block on a FIFO

    - by Dan
I create a fifo: mkfifo tofetch I run this python code: fetchlistfile = file("tofetch", "r") while 1: nextfetch = fetchlistfile.readline() print nextfetch It stalls on readline, as I would hope. I run: echo "test" > tofetch And my program doesn't stall anymore. It reads the line, and then continues looping forever. Why won't it stall again when there's no new data? I also tried looking on "not fetchlistfile.closed", I wouldn't mind reopening it after every write, but Python thinks the fifo is still open.
