  • Connectivity with SQL Server Express 2008 r2 and SQL Server 2000 on same machine

    At first glance this may same a duplicate of Installing both SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2008 on the same machine, but it is not. I have SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on the same machine and working fine. My problem lies with connecting to the 2008 R2 server from a remote machine. My connectivity needs to be TCP. The legacy installation or SQL 2000 uses the default port of 1433. The named instance is by default configured to use 'Shared Memory' and is working fine. When I configured the 2008 R2 server to use 1433 (I did not think that thru) the service refused to start becasue 1433 was already in use by the legacy SQL 2000 default instance. Doh! What I want to do is have both servers available simultaneously via TCP. both servers need not be on the same port, put if I cannot run them on the same port, then how do I configure the clients? Is there not some kind of proxy available that can monitor the 1433 port and pass the request thru to the correct SQL instance by name? Is this capability built into SQL server already? Thanks, Jim

  • SQL Server 2000 tables

    We currently have an SQL Server 2000 database with one table containing data for multiple users. The data is keyed by memberid which is an integer field. The table has a clustered index on memberid. The table is now about 200 million rows. Indexing and maintenance are becoming issues. We are debating splitting the table into one table per user model. This would imply that we would end up with a very large number of tables potentially upto the 2,147,483,647, considering just positive values. My questions: Does anyone have any experience with a SQL Server (2000/2005) installation with millions of tables? What are the implications of this architecture with regards to maintenance and access using Query Analyzer, Enterprise Manager etc. What are the implications to having such a large number of indexes in a database instance.   • Best way to replicate / mirror 100s of databases in SQL 2005

    Hi, I currently host around 400-500 SQL 2005 databases of varying sizes (1-10 gig) each. I am aware of most of the different methods available and the general pros/cons of mirroring, log shipping, replication and clustering, but i am not aware of how well they tend to perform when its employed at the size i have specified (400-500 unique databases). Does anyone have any good advice on what is likely the best method for having the ability to fail over to another server with this sort of setup? Fail over does not need to be immediate, i'm just looking for something better than taking backups every day and moving them to storage. I'm preferably looking for something that would also makes it easy to manage the databases in bulk (as opposed to one at a time). Thanks for your input!

  • ms sql 2005 server role problem

    On one of our sql 2005 servers we are no longer able to give any users server roles (ex. sysadmin). It appears to be successful both through the UI and through code. But when we check in the db and in the UI the role is unchecked and not shown for the user in the master db. Permissions don't seem to be the issue as we are testing this as system administrator levels of access. There are also no errors in the log. Any ideas? Thanks, Brandon

  • MOM 2005 SP1 and MBSA 2.1 : Compatible?

    We're currently using MOM 2005 SP1 for our system monitoring duties. It was installed and "configured" by someone who is no longer on our team. In the process of correcting a persistent error in the applications log of all of the monitored servers, "Default Global Virtual Directory Not Configured", I'm seeing the MBSA management pack is for MBSA v1.2. The current version of the MBSA appears to be 2.1. Does anyone have any experience in configuring MOM to use MBSA 2.1? Does MOM get along with MBSA 2.1? Any input would be appreciated. Point me in the direction of more reading if there's something out there I should be referring to. Thanks!

    I've been researching a problem which was diagnosed as someone changing the compatability mode for the SQL Server database from 80 to 90 on SQL Server 2005 for a database which had it's compatibility mode set to 80 due to legacy stored procedure code not having been upgraded. I found that when changing the compatibility mode this is not logged in the SQL Server logs. Has anyone seen this issue and is this a bug or is there an alternative method to track these changes?

    Does Virtual Server 2005 R2 have a command line interface, that's versatile enough? Here is a situation. I run a Win2k VM on an old memory constrained machine. I allocate it 378MB of RAM and the VM runs just fine. Once a month, inside the VM, I backup the (a very large) database, compress it using 7Zip and ftp it to the backup site (all in a script). Unfortunately the compression part takes a massive amount of RAM (far exceeding the 378MB), it goes for the paging file and brings absolutely everything to a crawl and literally takes 2-3 days, if left unattended. So to fix this, I have to shutdown the VM, give it temporarily 768MB of RAM and then the whole thing finishes in 20 minutes. So, is there a way do the following automatically from the host machine in a script? Shutdown the guest OS (I think, I got this part) Change the RAM allocation from 378 to 768 Start the guest OS again then, 1 hour later, do everything in reverse.

Today, I don't know why, when I try to connect locally to any of the databases it gives me that error. It fails even if I'm logged in using Windows Authentication or as 'sa' user.     For various reasons (old VT-less hardware, and .vhd support) we need to still run Virtual Server 2005 R2. It's just for lab/demo work but we'd like to run the host on the newest Windows OS possible. It's documented and at least partially supported to run the old Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 on Windows Server 2008 (non-R2). I've done that before. I'm wondering if anyone has gotten the scenario in the title above to work.     We have a reportserver on sql server 2005, it has previously been working on computer X which we are replacing with a computer Y. Computer X only had one default sql instance as our test environment, machine Y is a new machine with 2 sql instances, Y\TEST and Y\DEV. Both machines run Windows Server 2003 and Both have Sql Server 2005 installed together with Report Server We have not currently done any work on the DEV instance, just on the TEST instance. The reportserver is installed for TEST. SSRS previously worked as intended on X machine, and on Y\TEST its working for reports not using any custom code. However for some of the reports we are loading a custom assembly Localization. This assembly currently exists in following folders on server: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PublicAssemblies C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\Reporting Services\ReportServer\bin Also in rssrvpolicy.config, the entry for Report_Expressions_Default_Permissions has been changed from Execution to FullTrust (Although this was not necessary on the machine X). When attempting to upload the rdl files through the web interface, we get the following errors: Error while loading code module: ‘Localization, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=e302ddd55ecd694a’. Details: Could not load file or assembly 'Localization, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=e302ddd55ecd694a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.     I have installed SQL Server 2005 three times now on the same box. I cleaned up registry settings, files, you name it. All along I have been trying to install SQL Server 2005 Database and Reporting Services (x64) on a Windows 2008 Server. I have also applied the SP3 patch. Installing and Restarting the Server at every point. I have installed multiple instances (SQLDEV64, SQLQA64, SQLSTAGE64) of the Database and Reporting Services. I started to go through the Reporting Services Configuration manager, installing the Reporting Database along with setting up IIS. When I go test the website I get the following and there lies my question. How can I get around this error? http://localhost/reportserver Reporting Services Error -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError) Method not found: 'Void Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.UserUtil.CleanCurrentUserName()'. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SQL Server Reporting Services Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • SQL Server 2005 Import from Excel

    I'd like to know what my best option would be to import data from an excel file on a weekly or monthly basis. At first, I thought I would use SSIS, but after much struggle with seemingly simple tasks, I'm starting to rethink my plan. Would it be better/easier to just write the SQL by hand or use the services of an SSIS package? The basic process will be as follows: A separate process will download an .xls file to a local fileshare. The xls file will have a filename like: 'myfilename MON YY'. I will need to read the month and year from the the filename, reformat it to a sql date and then query a DimDate table to find the corresponding date key. For each row (after the first 2 header rows), insert the data with the date key, unless the row is a total row, then ignore. Here are some of the issues I've been encountering with SSIS: I can parse the date string from a flat file datasource, but can't seem to do it with an excel data source. Also, once parsed, i cannot seem to convert the string to a date in order to perform the lookup for the date key. For example, I want to do something like this: select DateKey from DimDate where ActualDate = convert(datetime, '01-' + 'JAN-10', 120) but i don't think it is possible to use the 'convert' or 'datetime' keywords in an expression builder. I have been also unable to find where I can edit the SQL to ignore the first 2 rows of data. I'm very skeptical of using SSIS because it seems like a Kludgy way of doing something that can probably be accomplished more efficiently writing the SQL yourself, but I may be forced to use SSIS. Thoughts?

    I'm trying to give permissions to a (sql 2005) database app based on AD groups. The general idea is to require a user to have a membership to "app_users" to view anything, and membership to other groups gives them write access to that group. "app_customers" gives write access to the customers module, "app_sales" to sales, etc. I've listed an example below: user1: AD member of app_users user2: AD member of app_users, app_customers For dbo.customers table: app_users - Granted: Select permission - Denied: Insert, Update, Delete app_customers - Granted: Select permission - Granted: Insert, Update, Delete I would expect user1 to be able to view the dbo.customers table, but will not be allowed to modify anything (insert/update/delete) - which works. In the same vein, I would expect user2 to be able to view AND modify the dbo.customers table, since they are a member of app_customers. However, this is not the case. Instead, user2 is denied any modifications just like user1. I seem to remember something about deny permissions winning if there was a conflict, but it's honestly been too long since I've dealt with them. Am I going about this the right way?   • SQL SERVER 2005 with Windows 7 Problems

    First of all I restored the database from other server and now all the stored procedures are named as [azamsharp].[usp_getlatestposts]. I think [azamsharp] is prefixed since it was the user on the original server. Now, on my local machine this does not run. I don't want the [azamsharp] prefix with all the stored procedures. Also, when I right click on the Sproc I cannot even see the properties option. I am running the SQL SERVER 2005 on Windows 7. UPDATE: The weird thing is that if I access the production database from my machine I can see the properties option. So, there is really something wrong with Windows 7 security. UPDATE 2: When I ran the orphan users stored procedure it showed two users "azamsharp" and "dbo1". I fixed the "azamsharp" user but "dbo1" is not getting fixed. When I run the following script: exec sp_change_users_login 'update_one', 'dbo1', 'dbo1' I get the following error: Msg 15291, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sp_change_users_login, Line 131 Terminating this procedure. The Login name 'dbo1' is absent or invalid.

Incremental crawling is scheduled at that time and few of the Timer jobs (normal timer jobs) are scheduled to run every mins / per 10mins. 2. Number of user requests are less. No other scheduled jobs are running at that time. so, how to narrow down the issue, what would be causing the sudden SQL connection increase?

    We're seeing strange behavior when running two versions of a query on SQL Server 2005: version A: SELECT otherattributes.* FROM listcontacts JOIN otherattributes ON listcontacts.contactId = otherattributes.contactId WHERE listcontacts.listid = 1234 ORDER BY name ASC version B: DECLARE @Id AS INT; SET @Id = 1234; SELECT otherattributes.* FROM listcontacts JOIN otherattributes ON listcontacts.contactId = otherattributes.contactId WHERE listcontacts.listid = @Id ORDER BY name ASC Both queries return 1000 rows; version A takes on average 15s; version B on average takes 4s. Could anyone help us understand the difference in execution times of these two versions of SQL? If we invoke this query via named parameters using NHibernate, we see the following query via SQL Server profiler: EXEC sp_executesql N'SELECT otherattributes.* FROM listcontacts JOIN otherattributes ON listcontacts.contactId = otherattributes.contactId WHERE listcontacts.listid = @id ORDER BY name ASC', N'@id INT', @id=1234; ...and this tends to perform as badly as version A.
