  • Dualboot Asus n56v (ubuntu / win 7 x64) - ubuntu doesn't detect partition table made by windows

    I have an Asus n56v and I've got troubles installing Ubuntu 12.04 x64. I already have installed Windows 7 x64! The hard drive is: Hitachi HTS547575A9E384 My problem: The installation program doesn't recognize the already existing partitions and is offering only options where there are partitions. Can someone help me out? Is this an ACPI/IDE conflict, missing driver or conflict with Windows 7? (I'm not an expert on Linux, only working sometimes with it.) I now tried out some options concerning EFI with a GTP-table. Everything worked but I wasn't able to fix a dual boot (Windows boot loader) nor with GRUB2. The laptop is still having a BIOS, but is able to boot DVDs/CDs in EFI-mode. Now I try to avoid EFI and GTP using the old windows MBR style. I reinstalled Windows, so far no problem. When I want to try to install Ubuntu, it doesn't detect the already existing partition table. It is just showing me an empty space for the whole disk. Other threads like Ubuntu 12.04 does not see windows already install on my computer (dual installation) don't help me out. os-prober shows me a correct result. I don't know how to deal with gdisk as shown in Installer doesn't detect existing partition table/windows 7 partition. I have 750GB for the whole disk. I'm using: 90GB for Windows reserved partition + system partition, 500GB for data and the rest should be for SWAP and linux-system. How can I make Ubuntu detect the partition table?

  • Dual boot Win/7 and Ubuntu 12.04

    So I've always wanted Ubuntu along with windows 7 and finally I went to try and make my computer that last night. (( I'll just skip the long story. )) I loaded Ubuntu from CD, Version 12.04 and it loaded fine and then I clicked the install icon. It asked me witch option I would like to proceed with, and I answered Ubuntu, in Windows 7. So it did everything rather quickly, and restarted itself; upon restarting itself it ejected the CD, and I thought everything was good to go. It brought me to the Option to either load Ubuntu or Windows, I was thinking to myself wow that was alot easier than I thought; Windows 7 Loads fine after it checked the HDD but when I go to load Ubuntu it brings me to the loading screen and then stays there for a long period time, finally moves on as if it was going to load into the regular dashboard, but loads into a dos looking thing. (( I'm sorry if I sound retarded explaining everything I'm not great with computers )) And at the very time it says something like installation failed. It also says it could not find a file or something like that. If you need me to go back and get the full message and put it up here I will. But if I put the CD in it loads fine. At work we had an internal tech user group meeting, and we were showing new features of VS.NET 2012 and Windows 8.     I'm a "newbie" to Ubuntu, but I've been wrestling with this problem for several hours and don't seem to be able to solve it: When I set the time in Windows (Indianapolis, Eastern U.S. time zone) and then re-boot to Ubuntu, the computer time goes to Hawaiian time. When the time is set in Ubuntu, and the computer is rebooted to Windows the time is advanced by 5 hours. I've set the time in the BIOS, and it seems to make no difference. I've tried setting the time from "automatic" to "manual", all with the same result. Not a big problem, but it shows some underlying glitch. Could anyone explain?

  • Basics about file/folder permissions on Win 7

    Hi. Under Win XP I never touched the permissions of a file/folder. I was happy with the way it worked. But recently I installed Windows 7 on a drive that previously hosted Windows XP. Now, some programs do not have 'read' and/or 'write' access to their own folders - and I am not talking about system folders like 'Program Files' but normal folders like 'C:\my data\my own folder\program folder'. I see that for folders created under Win XP I have some user groups that do not exist for 'normal' folders (folders created by me recently under Windows 7). For example, for the Win XP folder I have: Creator owner System Account unknown(S-1-5-21 blablabla... Admins Users For Win7 folders I have: Authenticated users System Admins Users How should I proceed? Should I give the right to the "Users" account to write to XP folders? Should I make the old folders (the XP folders) to have the same groups of users as the normal (Win7) ones by adding the "Authenticated users" account to those folders? Should I delete the "Account unknown" account from my system? (In this case, how?) Many thanks.

    Yes, this is not programming related but please bear with me =). I run a small niche SaaS business. Lately I've been thinking of traveling and experiencing life in other places. Would really appreciate suggestions for good places a developer could relocate to. In particular I'm looking for a place that: Has good internet connection (cheap stable broadband, lots of places that provide free wifi, etc.) Low cost of living (rent and food fairly cheap). At least half of the population speak English. Has a local courier agent (DHL, Fedex, any...). The government allows for extended stay of foreigners. I'm thinking of staying for about 6 months at each location and maybe doing it for 3 years. So looking for 5 to 6 locations in total. So if any of you think you're staying in a place that would be great for a visiting developer then please shout out. Include as detailed a description as possible. And include any cons about the place if there are. The only place that pops to mind right now is Bali =). Isle of Skye also seems interesting but I think immigration is tight and cost of living would definitely be higher. Thanks in advance for suggestions =)

  • Linux, some packets are not being NAT

    Hi, I'm trying to NAT HTTP traffic, I'm new to this and facing some issues. What i'm trying to do is NAT client HTTP requests to a webserver. CLIENT - NAT BOX - WEBSERVER When the client open the IP of the NAT BOX, the request should be pass to the web server. But I'm getting "HTTP request sent, awaiting response..." and then wait serveral minutes before the request is done. Looking at the tcpdump output, it looks like the first Syn packet on (10:48:54) is being NAT but not the second, third, fourth... ACK or PSH packets, and wait until (10:52:04) it starts NAT again on the ACK packet.   • Remote File Copy - Win Server 2008

    I'd like to copy backup archives from a remote server to my client machine. In the past, I've installed an FTP server on the remote machine and directed local server backups to dump into that directory. I'd then FTP in from my client machine. Just wondering if there is a simpler way to do this using Win 7 (Client) Win Server 2008? Robocopy? RDC command line options? For example, I can easily remote desktop in and drag the files from the server to my local machine. If there is an easy command line way to do this, then I don't have to setup an FTP server which is ideal. Thanks.

  • Win XP Virtual Machine APP that won't START as a terminal services client

    I have a Win XP Virtual Machine APP that won't START as a terminal services client..... but if i disable terminal services inside the virtual machine, start the app then start terminal services... the APP runs fine (so long as terminal services are disabled when it starts.....!) My question is... is it possible to script things somehow so as to allow this app to be accessed directly from win 7 (with out having to manually run XP virtual machine)... I.E as I can not run it this way as it won't START with terminal services running.... I.e is it somehow possible to script things so the APP starts and terminal services is delayed then kicks in after a time delay.... (I know this may not be possible but I'm getting sick of all the mucking around...)

  • Installing win xp media center 2005

    I have a Dell 710 XPS H2C running Vista Business, I wish to clean install Win XP media center 2005. I wiped my hard drive with Wipe Drive Pro and proceeded to install Win XP, the install starts and goes thru the various prompts but when it comes to 'installing windows' I get a blue screen that flashes briefly (to fast to get the error code) and then reboots. This happens with any XP system disk (iv'e tried 4), but it installs Vista, 7 or Linux with no problems. I contacted Dell Support who have yet to give me any solutions to resolve the problem. Is there anyone out there with any ideas please.

  • Samba share not accessible from Win 7 - tried advice on superuser

    I have an old Red Hat Linux box that I use, amongst other things, to run Samba. My Vista and remaining Win XP PC can access the p/w-protected Samba shares. I just set up a new Windows 7 64-bit Pro PC. Attempts to access the Samba shares by clicking on the Linux box's icon in 'Network' from this machine gave a Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. message when I gave the correct credentials. So I followed the suggestions in Windows 7, connecting to Samba shares (also checked here but found LmCompatibilityLevel was already 1). This got me a little further. If click on the Linux box's icon in 'Network' from this machine I now see icons for the shared directories. But when I click on one of these, I get \\LX\share is not accessible. You might not have permission... etc. I tried making the Win 7 password the same as my Samba p/w (the user name was already the same). Same result. The Linux box does part of what I need for ecommerce - the in-house part, it's not accessible to the Internet. As my Linux Fu is weak, I have to avoid changes to the Linux box, so I'm hoping someone can tell me what to do to Win 7 to make it behave like XP and Vista when accessing this share. Help please!? I had set 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level' to Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated based on the advice in Windows 7, connecting to Samba shares and had restarted the machine, but that didn't work for me. I'll try playing with other Network security values. I have now tried the following: Network security: Allow Local System to use computer identity for NTLM: changed from Not Defined to "Enabled". Restarted machine Still says "\LX\share is not accessible. You might not have permission..." etc. Network security: Restrict NTLM: Add remote server exceptions for NTLM Authentication (added LX) Restarted machine Still says "\LX\share is not accessible. You might not have permission..." etc. I can't see any other Network security settings that might affect this. Any other ideas please? Thanks Roy

  • Jan 2010 Microsoft update trashed my Win XP (64bit) PC

    I waited until this morning to install these 5 updates. My ancient Win XP (32 bit) PC has no problems but my Win XP 64 bit will not start. From the startup menu none of the 5 options given (e.g. safe mode, last known good configuration, etc) work. After selecting an option, the Windows Logo screen appears. About 9 seconds later a blue screen of death flashes [I can't read the error messages because it's there for about 100 ms] then it cycles through the reboot again. PS: This is a pretty cheap mobo (Ge Force) with an AMD 3 GH chip - but until today it did actually work. What should I do? Reinstall the O/S?
