• Using sub-repo with hgwebdir difficulties in mercurial

  Allright I got myself in a deadlock with Mercurial and sub-repos... Here's what happenend: I had a large mercurial repo that I server via apache and hgweb.cgi. Due to the size of the repo I decided to move to sub-repositories and share these with hgwebdir.cgi. Using the convert tool with the filemap option I created several sub-repositories: /main/foo /main/bar Nicely created an entry for the sub-repositories in .hgsub: foo = foo bar = bar And set hgwebdir.cgi up to show $/** as the root folder. Now when I went to my site (foo.com/hg) I saw my sub-repositories with one empty reposory among them (no name, no content), but I could not download it (archive location unknown): That was allright until I added a new sub-repository. I could not push the new .hgsub file to foo.com/hg, since that page is served by hgwebdir. The only method I can work currently is switch from hgwebdir to hgweb, commit .hgsubste and switch back to hgwebdir. Does someone have a good setup for such a mess?

• Python and App Engine project structure

  Hello, I am relatively new to python and app engine, and I just finished my first project. It consists of several *.py files (usually py file for every page on the site) and respectively temple files for each py file. In addition, I have one big PY file that has many functions that are common to a lot of pages, in I also declared the classes of db.Model (that is the datastore kinds). My question is what is the convention (if there is one) of arranging these files. If I create a model.py with the datastore classes, should it be in different package? Where should I put my template files and all of the py files that handle every page (should they be in the same directory as the one big common PY file)? I have tried to look for MVC and such implementations online but there are very few. Thanks, Joel

  Hello! I'm running the micro framework Bottle on Google App Engine. I'm using Jinja2 for my templates. And I'm using Beaker to handle the sessions. I'm still a pretty big Python newbie and am pretty stoked I got this far :) My question is how do I access the session data within the templates? I can get the session data no problem within the actual python code. And I could pass the session data each time I call a jinja template. But since I need the session data in the main menu bar of the site... that means I would have to pass it on every single page. Does anyone know if I can access it directly in the templates? For example I need the session data for my header links: Home | FAQ | Login or Home | FAQ | Logout Any help is greatly appreciated! :D

• 3D game engine for networked world simulation / AI sandbox

  More than 5 years ago I was playing with DirectSound and Direct3D and I found it really exciting although it took much time to get some good results with C++. I was a college student then. Now I have mostly enterprise development experience in C# and PHP, and I do it for living. There is really no chance to earn money with serious game development in our country. Each day more and more I find that I miss something. So I decided to spend an hour or so each day to do programming for fun. So my idea is to build a world simulation. I would like to begin with something simple - some human-like creatures that live their life - like Sims 3 but much more simple, just basic needs, basic animations, minimum graphic assets - I guess it won't be a city but just a large house for a start. The idea is to have some kind of a server application which stores the world data in MySQL database, and some client applications - body-less AI bots which simulate movement and some interactions with the world and each other. But it wouldn't be fun without 3D. So there are also 3D clients - I can enter that virtual world and see the AI bots living. When the bot enters visible area, it becomes material - loads a mesh and animations, so I can see it. When I leave, the bots lose their 3d mesh bodies again, but their virtual life still continues. With time I hope to make it like some expandable scriptable sandbox to experiment with various AI algorithms and so on. But I am not intended to create a full-blown MMORPG :D I have looked for many possible things I would need (free and open source) and now I have to make a choice: OGRE3D + enet (or RakNet). Old good C++. But won't it slow me down so much that I won't have fun any more? CrystalSpace. Formally not a game engine but very close to that. C++ again. MOgre (OGRE3D wrapper for .NET) + lidgren (networking library which is already used in some gaming projects). Good - I like C#, it is good for fast programming and also can be used for scripting. XNA seems just a framework, not an engine, so really have doubts, should I even look at XNA Game Studio :( Panda3D - full game engine with positive feedback. I really like idea to have all the toolset in one package, it has good reviews as a beginner-friendly engine...if you know Python. On the C++ side, Panda3D has almost non-existent documentation. I have 0 experience with Python, but I've heard it is easy to learn. And if it will be fun and challenging then I guess I would benefit from experience in one more programming language. Which of those would you suggest, not because of advanced features or good platform support but mostly for fun, easy workflow and expandability, and so I can create and integrate all the components I need - the server with the database, AI bots and a 3D client application?

  This is a rule in my .htaccess # those CSV files are under the DOCROOT ... so let's hide 'em <FilesMatch "\.CSV$"> Order Allow,Deny Deny from all </FilesMatch> I've noticed however that if there is a file with a lowercase or mixed case extension of CSV, it will be ignored by the rule and displayed. How do I make this case insensitive? I hope it doesn't come down to "\.(?:CSV|csv)$" (which I'm not sure would even work, and doesn't cover all bases) Note: The files are under the docroot, and are uploaded automatically there by a 3rd party service, so I'd prefer to implement a rule my end instead of bothering them. • Issues with Ext-JS 1.1 date fields and Firefox 3.x / IE 8

  I'm modifying an older website for a client that uses Ext-JS 1.1 and I'm having issues with display of date fields in IE and particularly Firefox. The site was left in a semi-implemented state previously, so there's not been a perceived problem before. In Chrome and Safari everything looks fine and the datepicker drops down and displays correctly. However in Firefox the picker is displayed widened to cover the maximum scrollable brower width (very wide indeed), and in IE it's truncated to about two thirds of the width it should be. I am somewhat uncertain that this is due to our css, but because Chrome and Safari work fine I think it might be a problem with Ext-js itself. I realise that this is an old version of Ext-JS, but because everything else works fine I don't want to go to the trouble of upgrading unless that would be very straightforward (but how difficult would that be?) I don't myself use ExtJS and this is the only website my client has with it - so I'm really looking for the simplest possible solution.

  Just installed TFS 2008. Created a project with portal site. When I create a bug in TFS from Visual Studio I'd like to see that bug in the web portal. And the other way around. When I add a task in the web portal I'd like to see that in Visual Studio. It's as if the web portal is not connected to TFS. I'm using the MSF for Agile Software Development template. I just saw Team System Web Access. That's what I want in addition to the other pages Sharepoint portal provides. For example the Wiki page and calendar view. So one place to see all tasks lists and assign task and see other project related pages. Maybe be able to has the tasks due dates come up on the calendar. Many thanks

I.e. brothers.co.uk = brothers.co.uk/home.aspx me.brothers.co.uk = brothers.co.uk/me.aspx him.brothers.co.uk = brothers.co.uk/him.aspx I've got the sub sections set up in DNN, but can't figure out what to do with domain names to get it working. • How to Use Steam In-Home Streaming

  Steam’s In-Home Streaming is now available to everyone, allowing you to stream PC games from one PC to another PC on the same local network. Use your gaming PC to power your laptops and home theater system. This feature doesn’t allow you to stream games over the Internet, only the same local network. Even if you tricked Steam, you probably wouldn’t get good streaming performance over the Internet. Why Stream? When you use Steam In-Home streaming, one PC sends its video and audio to another PC. The other PC views the video and audio like it’s watching a movie, sending back mouse, keyboard, and controller input to the other PC. This allows you to have a fast gaming PC power your gaming experience on slower PCs. For example, you could play graphically demanding games on a laptop in another room of your house, even if that laptop has slower integrated graphics. You could connect a slower PC to your television and use your gaming PC without hauling it into a different room in your house. Streaming also enables cross-platform compatibility. You could have a Windows gaming PC and stream games to a Mac or Linux system. This will be Valve’s official solution for compatibility with old Windows-only games on the Linux (Steam OS) Steam Machines arriving later this year. NVIDIA offers their own game streaming solution, but it requires certain NVIDIA graphics hardware and can only stream to an NVIDIA Shield device. How to Get Started In-Home Streaming is simple to use and doesn’t require any complex configuration — or any configuration, really. First, log into the Steam program on a Windows PC. This should ideally be a powerful gaming PC with a powerful CPU and fast graphics hardware. Install the games you want to stream if you haven’t already — you’ll be streaming from your PC, not from Valve’s servers. (Valve will eventually allow you to stream games from Mac OS X, Linux, and Steam OS systems, but that feature isn’t yet available. You can still stream games to these other operating systems.) Next, log into Steam on another computer on the same network with the same Steam username. Both computers have to be on the same subnet of the same local network. You’ll see the games installed on your other PC in the Steam client’s library. Click the Stream button to start streaming a game from your other PC. The game will launch on your host PC, and it will send its audio and video to the PC in front of you. Your input on the client will be sent back to the server. Be sure to update Steam on both computers if you don’t see this feature. Use the Steam > Check for Updates option within Steam and install the latest update. Updating to the latest graphics drivers for your computer’s hardware is always a good idea, too. Improving Performance Here’s what Valve recommends for good streaming performance: Host PC: A quad-core CPU for the computer running the game, minimum. The computer needs enough processor power to run the game, compress the video and audio, and send it over the network with low latency. Streaming Client: A GPU that supports hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding on the client PC. This hardware is included on all recent laptops and PCs. Ifyou have an older PC or netbook, it may not be able to decode the video stream quickly enough. Network Hardware: A wired network connection is ideal. You may have success with wireless N or AC networks with good signals, but this isn’t guaranteed. Game Settings: While streaming a game, visit the game’s setting screen and lower the resolution or turn off VSync to speed things up. In-Home Steaming Settings: On the host PC, click Steam > Settings and select In-Home Streaming to view the In-Home Streaming settings. You can modify your streaming settings to improve performance and reduce latency. Feel free to experiment with the options here and see how they affect performance — they should be self-explanatory. Check Valve’s In-Home Streaming documentation for troubleshooting information. You can also try streaming non-Steam games. Click Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library on your host PC and add a PC game you have installed elsewhere on your system. You can then try streaming it from your client PC. So users of the application who control a website can: FTP text and XML files onto their website put a clientaccesspolicy.xml in their root directory enter their URL in the silverlight application at which point the silverlight application then begins reading data from their site. I would like to extend this to less technical users who do not control a website, aren't adept with FTP, etc. What is the best service on the web that: allows users to publish different kinds of data, e.g. put out text files on web allows Silverlight client access (has clientaccesspolicy.xml set up) Some ideas are: free blog services (although then they are limited to a RSS feed, or the silverlight app would have to do some screen scraping) Google Docs? free cloud services? What free services allow easy publishing of any kind of data on the web and allow Silverlight client access?

Are these all trying to solve the same problem, or do they exist for different reasons? Which is simplest, which is most robust, and which (if any) is the default choice? Also, please let me know if I have overlooked a significant option. Edit: I should mention that I'm not particularly experienced in HTML parsing, and I'm particularly interested in which will get me moving the quickest, with the goal of parsing HTML on one particular site.

  I've heard that DotNetNuke takes a bit of a hit for Search Engine Optimization. I'm not criticizing the platform, by the way; I love DNN. This is just what I've heard. As I understand it, the impact is from repetitive content, table-based layouts, and lots of extra markup. I've got a friend who would like to start an e-commerce site using DNN and some modules from Snowcovered. I was just wondering whether DNN would be a good platform to choose. The idea is attractive because of the ease with which a DNN commerce system can be deployed. Search-engine friendly URLs aren't the problem - the modules do that, it's whether DNN as a whole would be a good platform for this. Thanks very much for any help or advice.

• setUserCredentials from Google data api is stuck

  Well, since I am facing some issues with OAuth implementation, I decided to go back to normal method where users will input their login id and password and I will use them in my code to validate their google account to fetch calendar information. So when user enters login id and password, the page is getting stuck. When I check the code, setUserCredentials is the method where it is getting stuck. But when I enter my login id and password and debug on development site, it works fine. There is no problem when I debug. And importantly , the problem appears for first time only, once I debug the code and next time I try it without breakpoint, it works fine. Does anyone know why setUserCredentials takes time or any way I can track why it is taking so time? I have asked the same question on Google data api forum, but nobody answered it.

My workstation has a static IP, and is connected to the internet. When I make a SharePoint site, I want to add a host header, for instance, devbox.com. I do not own this name, nor do I want to. I then add an entry in my hosts file, but when I surf to http://devbox.com:8080, it does not resolve. Do I need to register the name I want to use, or should this work, i.e., have my hosts file resolve names/IPs first?

It's a whole new world of SQLite where you compose your queries and parse your results with JavaScript. But while you may not have your whole site's database go down, the user who gets his/her database corrupted or wiped due to a malicious injection attack is going to be rather upset. So, what's the best way, in pure JavaScript, to escape/sanitize your inputs so they will not wreak havoc with your user's built-in database? Scriptlets? specifications? Anyone?

• Quartz in Webapplication

  I have a question in scheduling jobs in web application. If we have to schedule jobs in web application we can either use java util Timer/TimerTask or Quartz(there are also other scheduling mechanism, but I considered Quartz). I was considering which one to use, when i hit the site http://oreilly.com/pub/a/java/archive/quartz.html?page=1 which says using timer has a bad effect as it creates a thread that is out of containers control in the last line. The other pages discuss Quartz and its capabilities, but I can read that Quartz also uses thread and/or threadpool to schedule tasks. My guess is that these threads are also not under the containers control Can anybody clarify this to me Is it safe to use Quartz in my web applications without creating hanging threads or thread locking issues? • Using ELMAH and URLRewritingNet Together

  I have ELMAH setup on my production server and it has done a fantastic job of letting me know about any niggles - as well as any creative SQL injection! I've decided to introduce URl Rewriting and went for http://www.urlrewriting.net/ in the end. It was nice and easy to setup and it's doing exactly what I want with the customer-facing site. The problem is ELMAH. Because I've set the urlrewritingnet node in my config like so: <urlrewritingnet rewriteOnlyVirtualUrls="true" contextItemsPrefix="QueryString" defaultPage = "default.aspx" defaultProvider="RegEx" xmlns="http://www.urlrewriting.net/schemas/config/2006/07" > ...ELMAH likes to do this to it's axd links; http://www.mydomain.com/elmah.axd/stylesheet/default.aspx Does anyone have any idea how to either a) stop the re-writer following the .axd; or b) add rules to the re-writer to get ELMAH to work Any ideas? I'm happy to hack about with the httpHandlers...
