In addition to the stay service there are some other services. Each service has its own calculation logic. • How do I keep controversy in check?

  This is probably OT but it's less OT here than on any other SO site, so please bear with me. I'm working on a new project votEm. The goal is to give independent candidates a platform to introduce themselves to get elected for a political office. My main reason is that today, it's too expensive to run for an office. Some politicians in the US spend as much as 30 million dollars (!) for a single campaign. That money is better spent elsewhere. In a similar fashion, people who want to change countries like Egypt, could use such a platform to present themselves. Now I expect a lot of emotions and pressure on my site. People with a lot of money (and a lot to lose) will try to game it (political parties, secret services of ... errr ... "not 100% democratic countries", big companies, ...) To avoid as many mistakes as possible, I need a list of resources, ideas and tips how to keep such a site out of too much trouble. PS: I'd make this CW but the option seems to be gone...

• Execution plan warnings–All that glitters is not gold

  In a previous post, I showed you the new execution plan warnings related to implicit and explicit warnings.  Pretty much as soon as i hit ’post’,  I noticed something rather odd happening. This statement : select top(10) SalesOrderHeader.SalesOrderID, SalesOrderNumberfrom Sales.SalesOrderHeaderjoin Sales.SalesOrderDetail on SalesOrderHeader.SalesOrderID = SalesOrderDetail.SalesOrderID   Throws the “Type conversion may affect cardinality estimation” warning.     Ive done no such conversion in my statement why would that be ?  Well, SalesOrderNumber is a computed column , “(isnull(N'SO'+CONVERT([nvarchar](23),[SalesOrderID],0),N'*** ERROR ***'))”,  so thats where the conversion is.   Wait!!! Am i saying that every type conversion will throw the warning ?  Thankfully, no.  It only appears for columns that are used in predicates ,even if the predicate / join condition is fine ,  and the column is indexed ( and/or , presumably has statistics).    Hopefully , this wont lead to to many wild goose chases, but is definitely something to bear in mind.  If you want to see this fixed then upvote my connect item here.

• Understanding and memorizing git rebase parameters

  So far the most confusing portion of git is rebasing onto another branch. Specifically, it's the command line arguments that are confusing. Each time I want to rebase a small piece of one branch onto the tip of another, I have to review the git rebase documentation and it takes me about 5-10 minutes to understand what each of the 3 main arguments should be. git rebase <upstream> <branch> --onto <newbase> What is a good rule of thumb to help me memorize what each of these 3 parameters should be set to, given any kind of rebase onto another branch? Bear in mind I have gone over the git-rebase documentation again, and again, and again, and again (and again), but it's always difficult to understand (like a boring scientific white-paper or something). So at this point I feel I need to involve other people to help me grasp it. My goal is that I should never have to review the documentation for these basic parameters. I haven't been able to memorize them so far, and I've done a ton of rebases already. So it's a bit unusual that I've been able to memorize every other command and its parameters so far, but not rebase with --onto.

• Installing Skype on 12.04 64 bit causes errors

  Hi there I am trying to install Skype through apt-get but I am having some trouble. The Skype package depends on skype-bin which is not found in my list of packages. So when trying to install Skype I get the following error. $ sudo apt-get install skype Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: skype : Depends: skype-bin but it is not installable E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. Does anyone know why this might happen? Am I missing a repository? I get similar results when downloading the .deb from their site. But it complains about ai32-libs not being installable. This is because it depends on another package that does not exist in my list. Please bear in mind that this is a custom install from the company I work for. They have secured it and I think they have updated it over time and skipped versions, possibly breaking things.

• running adb via wifi on ubuntu 13.04

  First, im new on linux so please bear with me. I have a rooted android phone and i was able to run the adb via wifi network on windows, where i just need to go to the adb's directory and type adb connect. However, i can't just do that in my ubuntu. Everytime i enter adb connect, the terminal always said that i dont have the adb and i must install it. When i check the ADT Bundle (I downloaded the bundled one from here), i can see the adb is there inside the platform-tools folder. I already tried to change the directory to the platform-tools and run the adb connect from there, but its still not working. Do i need to install the adb again via terminal? Or did i miss something? You may be wondering why dont i just download the adb (again) via terminal and do trial and error? The answer is because i dont have a good internet connection, so i want to avoid unnecessary downloads. Thanks for your time :D

  This is a great time of the year!  Not only does the weather start cooling down a bit, but it's time to get ready for JavaOne 2012.  It feels so long since my last JavaOne (last year I missed it because I was on a mom duty), so this year I couldn't be happier to be this close to the action again.  Have you ever been at JavaOne?  There are a million great reasons to love JavaOne, and the most important for me is the atmosphere of the conference: The Java community is there, and Java is in the air! • Ubuntu Server 11.10 boot, white terminal with garbled black text

  I just installed Ubuntu server 11.10 and the install went fine. This system is running on an Intel Pentium II board with onboard graphics. However when I try to boot into Ubuntu I get a white terminal with garbled black text. I have tried various grub 'fixes' as googling the issue seemed to suggest it was a res or grub related issue. I cannot ssh in so the issue does affect Linux as well. I have had no luck with anything thus far and am at my wits end. This was my first Ubuntu excursion as my friend told me it was better for servers than CentOS because it was easier... Not so much.... Does anyone have any ideas as to what the issue could be? When answering bear in mind I am an Ubuntu noob and Linux novice. As of 1/26/12 I have tried to add the console=ttyl line to the /etc/default/grub and run update-grub. This results in the line in the boot parameters that normally reads: linux /vmlunz-3.0.0-12-generic-pae root=/dev/mapper/dev-root rovt.handoff=7 now reads: linux /vmlunz-3.0.0-12-generic-pae root=/dev/mapper/dev-root ro console=ttyl vt.handoff=7 This does not work. Is there anyway to have console=ttyl inserted on a line by itself? I am at my wits ends, Thanks for all your help, Speed

• Install Rails on linux [migrated]

  I am trying to install Ruby on Rails. and i have followed the following link for the install https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-install-ruby-on-rails-on-ubuntu-12-04-lts-precise-pangolin-with-rvm. This link was helpful i was able to run it, and everything, however as soon has i restarted the computer i then go into my apps and run it again with rails s and this message occurs. The program 'rails' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing: sudo apt-get install rails But work before, what should i do, do i need to set the path of somesort?? • Partition Alignment Confusion

  I have a new Samsung 840 250GB SSD on the way, and I want to make sure that everything is running optimally after install. I've spent many frustrating hours on the internet trying to understand how I should align the partitions of the SSD when it arrives (and even how to partition everything; my other drive is a 1TB HDD with files already on it). I'd like to know a foolproof way of setting everything up. Now, the only place I could find the erase block size of the 840 is here: http://thessdreview.com/Forums/ssd-beginners-guide-discussion/3630.htm I simply can't understand why such information isn't made freely accessible by manufacturers! But, anyway, this would suggest the EBS is 1536kb, which seems odd to me. It is to my understanding that you should now align by MiB (usually set at 1MiB). I assume that the figure above should actually be 1536k B=1.5MiB? This seems to suggest the partition alignment will be somewhat non-standard. So my question is: How do I align my partitions given this information? Please bear in mind that I have never used linux before; I'm doing my best to get everything set up so that I can begin to learn but am finding this process incredibly opaque and time consuming. If possible, a step by step guide through GParted would be great; at the moment I'm considering an NTFS partition ~20GB for Windows (playing games), an EXT4 ~20GB for ubuntu (for doing everything else) and a shared documents+games partition for everything else in NTFS file format. I'm not going to have any swap partition and use swap files instead.

• Restore Default Appearance in Ubuntu 12.04

  I'd like the original colour scheme, icon style of 12.04. I somehow lost the Ambiance theme (possible error or upgrade error). I re-installed 'light-themes' from the terminal and got it back. But the panel on the top that shows the options of sound, battery and wi-fi has changed and I can-not get the original setting back. In the windows, the close, minimize tools have shifted to the right instead of the original left side. I had installed MyUnity and Ubuntu Tweak but deleted them. As such, I want the original setting back. Kindly help me with the commands. I have searched for solutions; there are multiple and I need to be sure if I should follow the same. Kindly bear before marking duplicate. Discoveries *. [The appearance is gray and boxy as outlined here.] Not sure same problem. *. [Similar 'gray and boxy' article here] *. Desktop forgets theme.] *. I have also tried unity --reset command. It never completes. I gave it 20 minutes.

• Is it possible to use two separate USB tuners with Windows Media Center?

  I'm planning to replace my traditional PC-style media center (with twin tuners) with an Asrock Ion 3D (or similar) but this means forgoing my existing PCI-E dual tuner card for a USB solution. Since Freeview HD (using DVB-T2) is now available I'd like to equip my media center to take advantage. The trouble is there are currently no dual DVB-T2 USB tuners on the market (that I can find anyway). Would I be able to plug two separate USB tuners and have them correctly picked up and working within all apps, including Windows Media Center? Are there any caveats I might need to bear in mind when using two tuners in this way?

• What's the canonical process for backing up a website?

  This is going to sound terrible, but bear with me. I currently have a cron job that does a mysql dump, a git add all and commit, and a git push to bitbucket. I set this up almost a year ago, when I didn't know much about git, backups, and general web development and administration. I haven't had the time to fix this and do it properly, but the repo has now grown quite big from accumulating large temporary files from my forum, so now I have to do something and I want to do it properly this time around. What processes do semi-large websites and personal site admins use for backing up server content? Based on what I've learned since I set this up, what I'm currently think of doing is: Making changes on a development domain and committing the code frequently Archiving the entire site after a successful deployment from the development domain Having automatic daily database and user-content backups. I still like the idea of backing up sqldumps with git, though. I know git isn't a backup tool and that this is beyond its purpose, but the textual queries that are exported would be easily managed by git and would save a lot of space in archives.

  I'd like to mention that im really new to this so please bear with me. I'm trying to setup a forum software to send emails via postfix but I think my server has the port 25 blocked. • What sort of data should be sent for mouse-based movement in a multiplayer game?

  I'm new to the Multiplayer Rodeo here so please bear with me... I am just getting started and I'm trying to figure out how to deal with movement. I've looked at the question Best way to implement mouse-based movement in MMOG which gives me a pretty good idea, but I'm still struggling with what kind of data should be sent to the server. If a player is on position [x:0, y:0] and I click with the mouse on [x:40, y:40] to start movement, what information should I send to the server? Should I calculate the position based on velocity on client side and just send the expected location? Or should I send current location and velocity and direction? When the server is updating the clients on the players' whereabouts, should the position be sent only, and the clients expected to interpolate/predict movement, or can the direction sent from the client (instead of just coordinates) be used. My concern(or confusion) is regarding the ping/lag frequency of data update and use of a predictive algorithm, as I'd like the movement to be smooth even with a high latency, and prevent ability to cheat(though that's not the top priority).

• Printing Off Center or Images Offset After Upgrade to 14.04 LTS (Brother HL-2240)

  :) I have a very frustrating problem with my Brother HL-2240 under Ubuntu 14.04. Bear in mind this was working perfectly under Ubuntu 13.10. In Firefox, when I print a webpage, all of the images are off center and cut off, this is a big deal for my work. In Google Chrome, when I print a webpage, the page is off center, toward the right margin. In Opera, when I print a webpage, all of the white areas within the margins are black, using a lot of toner. PDF opened in document viewer, prints off center. Steps I have taken to troubleshoot: 1) Playing with the printer settings, resetting to defaults, etc. 2) Un-installing the Brother driver and re-installing (linux-brprinter-installer-2.0.0-1 from the Brother website), which works perfectly in Ubuntu 13.10. I see a similar, un-answered question, here. Hopefully this question provides some additional clarity to the matter. If anyone would like some additional detail because she or he is willing to help, please let me know. I can scan output from the printer to show you. Thank you.

• Ubuntu 9.10 Dowload Speed Very Slow

  I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 desktop and I'm new to the Linux world, so bear with me. I'm on a corporate network of 3 T1s shared across 50-60 users. I typically get about 300 KB/sec for downloads, but for whatever reason, the Linux box will start out in that range, then drop to less than 1KB/Sec sometimes. Doesn't seen to matter where I'm downloading from. Right now I'm trying to get Eclipse for PHP and it's running at 3-6KB/sec. Getting the updates for the system will also drop to very slow rates. Our IT person has set up the machine to get the same 10.0.0.x address when it starts, and moved this IP to bypass our Proxy/Firewall going out, so that shouldn't be the issue. Can anyone recommend something I can try to better diagnose the problem. Again, I'm new to the Linux world and the hardware/OS setup side in general (coming form more of a coding background). • public_html permissions for local development

  I know this question has popped up a couple times, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer to my issue, so please bear with me. I have Ubuntu Server 12.04 setup in VirtualBox for PHP development and testing (Drupal plus other PHP sites using Yii framework). My question is in 3 parts... 1) If I create a public_html folder under /home/myuser, do I need to give ownership of that folder to the Apache www-data group? If so, are there any specific permissions I should be setting? 755? (Btw, I am following this guide to create the public_html directory and set up multiple virtual hosts per site I create and test) I previously had all of my sites under /var/www, but ran into massive permission denied errors whenever I tried to sFTP to it, either through FileZilla or PhpStorm. This is what I had previously done: sudo chgrp www-data /var/www sudo chmod -R 775 /var/www sudo chmod -R g+s /var/www sudo usermod -G www-data [my_ftp_user] 2) The second part of my question is this: If I create my PHP project and files in Windows through PhpStorm, and then upload via sFTP, will permissions get affected? 3) Once I am satisfied with my developed project, would it be advisable to move and test them under /var/www to see how it would fair in a production-ish environment? I would really appreciate the help and advice here. I'm learning more as I go along, but dealing with Linux files and permissions is a bit of a new ballgame for me! Thank you

• What is the *right* way to use gnome-shell integrated chat?

  Please bear with me as I am still figuring out how to use gnome-shell. My question concerns how to use the integrated chat correctly. I have the following questions: 1) When people chat with me, it pops up as a notification on the hidden bar at the bottom of the screen, and then that chat stays there so I can access it later. How do I initiate a chat in this manner, without opening an empathy window? What I have been doing is Hitting super key Typing in the person's name, which brings up contacts Initiate the chat using empathy Immediately close the chat window When the person responds, it comes through as a notification. I then proceed to interact with the chat this way. 2) What is the keyboard shortcut for bringing up the notifications bar? Ideally, I would like to have the following experience Use some keyboard shortcut to bring up notifications Begin typing the name of the notification that I wish to investigate, and have the matching work in a fuzzy manner, much like Ido mode's buffer switching matching in Emacs When then right name is matched, I hit enter and then bring up the chat with that person as that popup notification. Are these behaviours supported? If not, I would be happy to work on implementing them. I am an experienced programmer, but not familiar with gnome-shell. If someone would point me in the right direction in terms of if this behaviour is supported, or where in the gnome-shell framework would I add to to get this behaviour, I would really appreciate it. • How to remove .htaccess virus? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: My server's been hacked EMERGENCY First time posting so bear with me please! My friend's site has been hacked and the .htaccess file (which I really know nothing about) has been injected with a malicious redirect that forces search engines to the see the site as a "harmful website." If you look at the .htaccess file you can see it's Russian or at least ends in .ru. Seeing as I know very little about this stuff, I simply tried to restore the good .htaccess file back with his host. This doesn't work as the virus just recreates the infected .htaccess file. When I searched through the rest of his directories, I can see the same bad .htaccess file in most of the folders. I can't seem to help him get rid of this virus.

• How do I configure ubuntu server's iptables to allow java without opening the floodgates?

  I'm new to servers, so please bear with me. I have my amateur site running. Problem is, I followed Rackspace's instructions on setting up iptables and am pretty sure that's why the java server I'm trying to use on port 8080 isn't working (it runs the script but my android test app doesn't connect to it). When I try running the same java server script on port 80 it doesn't even start. I also ran nmap on my domain and saw that indeed only port 80 and 22 (for ssh) are responding. Is it possible to run Java and apache happily on the same server? If so, how can I configure my iptables correctly. (I'm aware that I should probably do some sort of filtering in the java server itself, but will figure that out later).

• How to limit server to specific IP addresses with mod_authz_host?

  Hi! I am very new to this area, so please bear with me. :) Right now I am running an Apache HTTP server on my setup, a very basic configuration. The website hosted on it is accessible from anywhere, and I want to limit the access to a specific IP address range. I've looked into this and I found that one Apache module called mod_authz_host handles this. http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_authz_host.html The problem is, I haven't managed to find documentation that explains well how to actually do the stuff. How do I actually make sure only a certain range of IP addresses can access my site/server? The machine is running Ubuntu Server 10.10, the web files are stored in /var/www/, the apache2 daemon has its stuff stored in /etc/apache2/ and /usr/lib/apache2/modules/*. Initially I wanted to just set the browsers in each virtualbox under a proxy but my boss said that it can probably be done right off the bat under the virtualbox accounts itself. • How to learn to deliver quality software designs when working on a tight deadline?

  I read many books about how to design great software, but I kind of struggle to come up with a good design decisions when it comes to business apps, especially when the timeframe is tough. In the company I currently work for, the following situation happen all the time: my teamlead tells me that there's a task to do, I call some guy or a girl from business who tells me exactly what is it they want, and then I start coding. The task always fits in some existing application (we do only web apps or web services), usually it's purpose is to pull data from one datasource and put into the other one, with some business logic attached in the process. I start coding and then, after spending some time on a problem, my code didn't work as expected - either because of technical mistake or my lack of knowledge of the domain. The business is ringing me 2-3 times a day to hurry me up. I ask my team lead to help, he comes up, sees my code and goes like 'What's this?'. Then he throws away about half of my code, including all the design decisions I made, writes 2-3 methods that does the job (each of them usually 200-300 lines long or more, by the way), and task is complete, code works as it should have. The guy is smarter than me, obviously, and I'm aware of that. My goal is to be better software developer, that means write better code, not finish the job quicker with some crappy code. And the thing is, when I have enough time to tackle a problem, I can come up with a design that is good (in my opinion, of course), but I fall short to do so when I'm on a tight deadline.
