  • Stephen Forte visits IDEP Foundation Recipient of our post-tsunami .NET Charity Auction

Earlier this week I got an email from Stephen Forte saying he was in Bali and would love to meet the folks from IDEP Foundation. IDEP is an Indonesian NGO for which Stephen and I coordinated a charity auction 5 years ago and raised $10,000. We raised another chunk of money in a repeat auction in June of that year as well. I sent an email to my dear friend Petra, a Canadian ex-pat, who runs IDEP. I met Petra through Keith Pleas who had connections to IDEP and was looking for help for them after...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

  • Show "results - of" of internal search in Google search result

    - by Petra Barus
I was doing some searches on Google Search and I stumbled on this As you can see in the screenshot above, the search results show a summary of an internal search page (the one I highlighted by red underline) on the website (homes.com and findaproperty.com). I would like to show up this kind of result in the Google search for my website internal search. How do I do it? Do I have to put some metatag or something?

  • Tracking Search Filter Parameters Using Google Analytics

    - by Petra Barus
I'm just wondering if there is a way to do this using Google Analytics. Let's say I have a search filter like the one used in Trulia.com There is a text search for the location with other drop-downs for filtering by bedroom, land size, property type (apartments, house) etc. Is there a way to track the filter and obtain a report for some questions like below using Google Analytics What is the most popular property types (house, apartments) for search in New York area? What is the most common maximum price of users who are looking for apartments in San Francisco? (or actually Google Analytics is not suitable for this kind of thing?)

  • How To Track "Similar Product/Page" Links In Internal Site

    - by Petra Barus
So I just created a new widget that would show up in a product page in my site. This widget will show several products similar to the product that is displayed in the current page. The purpose is to help users compare similar products. Let's say in the product page A http://domain/products/A The Similar Products widget will show http://domain/products/B http://domain/products/C http://domain/products/D http://domain/products/E My question is how to track this "Product B page were visited X times from Product A page via Similar Product widget"? (And there is also chance that Product B will show up in the widget on Product C page) I have this idea using the Event feature from Google Analytics. But I'm still not sure if it is or what is the common best practice for this.

  • Huge spike in traffic tracked by Google Analytics from Safari browsers

    - by Petra Barus
My site urbanindo.com recently experienced huge spike in traffic tracked by Google Analytics. The huge spike sometime shows in several same pages. This is odd because I rarely experienced that much traffic before. Some pages can have hundreds of visitors at the same time. But when I read the webserver log, those pages only showed up in only one or two entries, not hundreds like the GA showed. But the only similar thing about the entries is that they are using similar browser agent. Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; CPU OS 5_1_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B206 Safari/7534.48.3 Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_1_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B206 Safari/7534.48.3 And when I opened the Google Analytics Audience Technology Browsers & OS and I plotted the chart based on the browsers, I saw that the huge spike came from Safari. This huge spikes started to happen since the beginning of this August, which happens to be when I use multiple webservers behind load balancer (although I'm pretty sure those two are not relevant). Is there something wrong with my GA configuration?

  • Lua: Why changing value on one variable changes value on an other one too?

    - by user474563
I think that running this code you will get excactly what I mean. I want to register 5 names to a register(people). I loop 5 times and in each loop I have a variable newPerson which is supposed to save all information about a person and then be added to the people register. In this example only the names of the people are being registered for simplicity. The problem is that in the end all people turn to have the same name: "Petra". I playied a bit with this but can't get a reasonable reason for this behaviour. Help appreciated! local people={} local person={ name="Johan", lastName="Seferidis", class="B" } local names={"Markus", "Eva", "Nikol", "Adam", "Petra"} --people to register for i=1, 5 do --register 5 people local newPerson=person local name=names[i] for field=1, 3 do --for each field(name, lastname, class) if field==1 then newPerson["name"]=name end --register name end people[i]=newPerson end print("First person name: " ..people[1]["name"]) print("Second person name: "..people[2]["name"]) print("Third person name: " ..people[3]["name"])

  • Wireless not working on desktop with Asus USB-N13 (B1) wireless adapter

    - by user900749
I am trying to connect my desktop to a wireless network. I have purchased an ASUS USB-N13 B1 adapter. I have followed instructions for installing drivers and disabling conflicting drivers. I have thoroughly searched and could not find a solution. The adapter is recognized and powered on. I have entered the ssid and password information into the wireless network configuration. Other machines can connect to this wireless network, and the machine can connect online via ethernet without issue. Here is the output of some commands which summarize my configuration, and might give some clues : ~$ cat /etc/lsb-release DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=12.04 DISTRIB_CODENAME=precise DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS" ~$ uname -a Linux petra 3.2.0-29-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 27 17:03:23 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux ~$ lsusb Bus 001 Device 006: ID 0b05:17ab ASUSTek Computer, Inc. ~$ dmesg [ 1883.823150] wlan0: authenticate with 48:5b:39:e7:25:5e (try 1) [ 1884.020027] wlan0: authenticate with 48:5b:39:e7:25:5e (try 2) [ 1884.220025] wlan0: authenticate with 48:5b:39:e7:25:5e (try 3) [ 1884.420023] wlan0: authentication with 48:5b:39:e7:25:5e timed out Any assistance would be appreciated as I have been trying to get this machine online for several weeks now to no avail.
