  • No, iCloud Isn’t Backing Them All Up: How to Manage Photos on Your iPhone or iPad

    - by Chris Hoffman
Are the photos you take with your iPhone or iPad backed up in case you lose your device? If you’re just relying on iCloud to manage your important memories, your photos may not be backed up at all. Apple’s iCloud has a photo-syncing feature in the form of “Photo Stream,” but Photo Stream doesn’t actually perform any long-term backups of your photos. iCloud’s Photo Backup Limitations Assuming you’ve set up iCloud on your iPhone or iPad, your device is using a feature called “Photo Stream” to automatically upload the photos you take to your iCloud storage and sync them across your devices. Unfortunately, there are some big limitations here. 1000 Photos: Photo Stream only backs up the latest 1000 photos. Do you have 1500 photos in your Camera Roll folder on your phone? If so, only the latest 1000 photos are stored in your iCloud account online. If you don’t have those photos backed up elsewhere, you’ll lose them when you lose your phone. If you have 1000 photos and take one more, the oldest photo will be removed from your iCloud Photo Stream. 30 Days: Apple also states that photos in your Photo Stream will be automatically deleted after 30 days “to give your devices plenty of time to connect and download them.” Some people report photos aren’t deleted after 30 days, but it’s clear you shouldn’t rely on iCloud for more than 30 days of storage. iCloud Storage Limits: Apple only gives you 5 GB of iCloud storage space for free, and this is shared between backups, documents, and all other iCloud data. This 5 GB can fill up pretty quickly. If your iCloud storage is full and you haven’t purchased any more storage more from Apple, your photos aren’t being backed up. Videos Aren’t Included: Photo Stream doesn’t include videos, so any videos you take aren’t automatically backed up. It’s clear that iCloud’s Photo Stream isn’t designed as a long-term way to store your photos, just a convenient way to access recent photos on all your devices before you back them up for real. iCloud’s Photo Stream is Designed for Desktop Backups If you have a Mac, you can launch iPhoto and enable the Automatic Import option under Photo Stream in its preferences pane. Assuming your Mac is on and connected to the Internet, iPhoto will automatically download photos from your photo stream and make local backups of them on your hard drive. You’ll then have to back up your photos manually so you don’t lose them if your Mac’s hard drive ever fails. If you have a Windows PC, you can install the iCloud Control Panel, which will create a Photo Stream folder on your PC. Your photos will be automatically downloaded to this folder and stored in it. You’ll want to back up your photos so you don’t lose them if your PC’s hard drive ever fails. Photo Stream is clearly designed to be used along with a desktop application. Photo Stream temporarily backs up your photos to iCloud so iPhoto or iCloud Control Panel can download them to your Mac or PC and make a local backup before they’re deleted. You could also use iTunes to sync your photos from your device to your PC or Mac, but we don’t really recommend it — you should never have to use iTunes. How to Actually Back Up All Your Photos Online So Photo Stream is actually pretty inconvenient — or, at least, it’s just a way to temporarily sync photos between your devices without storing them long-term. But what if you actually want to automatically back up your photos online without them being deleted automatically? The solution here is a third-party app that does this for you, offering the automatic photo uploads with long-term storage. There are several good services with apps in the App Store: Dropbox: Dropbox’s Camera Upload feature allows you to automatically upload the photos — and videos — you take to your Dropbox account. They’ll be easily accessible anywhere there’s a Dropbox app and you can get much more free Dropbox storage than you can iCloud storage. Dropbox will never automatically delete your old photos. Google+: Google+ offers photo and video backups with its Auto Upload feature, too. Photos will be stored in your Google+ Photos — formerly Picasa Web Albums — and will be marked as private by default so no one else can view them. Full-size photos will count against your free 15 GB of Google account storage space, but you can also choose to upload an unlimited amount of photos at a smaller resolution. Flickr: The Flickr app is no longer a mess. Flickr offers an Auto Upload feature for uploading full-size photos you take and free Flickr accounts offer a massive 1 TB of storage for you to store your photos. The massive amount of free storage alone makes Flickr worth a look. Use any of these services and you’ll get an online, automatic photo backup solution you can rely on. You’ll get a good chunk of free space, your photos will never be automatically deleted, and you can easily access them from any device. You won’t have to worry about storing local copies of your photos and backing them up manually. Apple should fix this mess and offer a better solution for long-term photo backup, especially considering the limitations aren’t immediately obvious to users. Until they do, third-party apps are ready to step in and take their place. You can also automatically back up your photos to the web on Android with Google+’s Auto Upload or Dropbox’s Camera Upload. • How to Banish Duplicate Photos with VisiPic

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
You meant well, you intended to be a good file custodian, but somewhere along the way things got out of hand and you’ve got duplicate photos galore. Don’t be afraid to delete them and lose important photos, read on as we show you how to clean safely. Deleting duplicate files, especially important ones like personal photos, makes a lot of people quite anxious (and rightfully so). Nobody wants to be the one to realize that they deleted all the photos of their child’s first birthday party during a hard drive purge gone wrong. In this tutorial we’re going to show you how to go beyond the limited reach of  tools which simply compare file names and file sizes. Instead we’ll be using a program that combines that kind of comparison with actual image analysis to help you weed out not just perfect 1:1 file duplicates but also those piles of resized for email images, cropped images, and other modified images that might be cluttering up your hard drive. • Database design for sharing photos site?

    - by javaLearner.java
I am using php and mysql. If I want to do a sharing photos website, whats the best database design for upload and display photos. This is what I have in mind: domain: |_> photos |_> user Logged in user will upload photo in [http://www.domain.com/user/upload.php] The photos are stored in filesystems, and the path-to-photos stored in database. So, in my photos folder would be like: photos/userA/subfolders+photos, photos/userB/subfolders+photos, photos/userC/subfolders+photos etc Public/others people may view his photo in: [http://www.domain.com/photos/user/?photoid=123] where 123 is the photoid, from there, I will query from database to fetch the path and display the image. My questions: Whats the best database design for photo-sharing website (like flickr)? Will there be any problems if I keep creating new folder in "photos" folder. What if hundreds of thousands users registered? Whats the best practices What size of photos should I keep? Currently I only stored thumbnail (100x100) and (max) 1600x1200 px photos. What others things I should take note when developing photos-sharing website?

  • How do you sync photos with your family?

    - by romkyns
We've always been trying to share photos within our family, despite all living in different countries. This has been very challenging. We have about 50GB of photos that we share with each other. Everyone organizes them differently, so rsync/Syncplicity don't work. Everyone likes their photos on the fast hard drive rather than a slow website with reduced quality, so online sharing websites are a no-go. So far we have been essentially syncing them manually, via a shared folder that new photos are placed to and collected from. This is laborious and prone to errors, that usually leave one of us without all the photos without even knowing. To those who are in a similar situation, how do you solve this?

  • Good process/software for organizing photos past/present

    - by Matthew
So I have tons of photos taken all the time. I have a lot from years past that I never went through (meaning deleting duplicates, etc). I've got a new pc with windows 7, and I'm wondering what a good process is to organize those photos. They're in folders that have really no meaning (it used to be people would put them in a folder wherever, even the desktop or somewhere else, not just the My Pictures folder). I'm going to keep all pictures in the "My Pictures" folder from now on. I've used Picasa from g=Google, and it works great. Is this the recommended free software for this? What process do I use to move the old pictures over in to new "organized" folders? Lately in Picasa when I import off my camera card, I would just select something that names the folder after the date it was taken. Is this advised? Just give me ideas on how to stay organized with photos. Should I tag them also? Should I rename the file names? Keep in mind I have over 16,000 photos I'll have to go through, so it can't be anything to thorough.

  • Rails 3 Form For Custom Action

    - by Andrew
    I'm having trouble routing a form to a custom action in Rails 3. Here are my routes: resources :photos do resources :comments collection do get 'update_states' end member do put 'upload' end end Here's the form_for: form_for @photo, :remote => true, :url => { :action => upload_photo_path(@photo) }, :html => { :multipart => :true, :method => 'put' } do |f| And here's the error message: No route matches {:action=>"/photos/42/upload", :controller=>"photos"} ... this is especially frustrating because "photos/:id/upload" is exactly the correct action for this form. What am I missing? EDITS - Here are the original Photo-related routes: photo_comments GET /photos/:photo_id/comments(.:format) {:action=>"index", :controller=>"comments"} POST /photos/:photo_id/comments(.:format) {:action=>"create", :controller=>"comments"} new_photo_comment GET /photos/:photo_id/comments/new(.:format) {:action=>"new", :controller=>"comments"} edit_photo_comment GET /photos/:photo_id/comments/:id/edit(.:format) {:action=>"edit", :controller=>"comments"} photo_comment GET /photos/:photo_id/comments/:id(.:format) {:action=>"show", :controller=>"comments"} PUT /photos/:photo_id/comments/:id(.:format) {:action=>"update", :controller=>"comments"} DELETE /photos/:photo_id/comments/:id(.:format) {:action=>"destroy", :controller=>"comments"} update_states_photos GET /photos/update_states(.:format) {:action=>"update_states", :controller=>"photos"} upload_photo PUT /photos/:id/upload(.:format) {:action=>"upload", :controller=>"photos"} photos GET /photos(.:format) {:action=>"index", :controller=>"photos"} POST /photos(.:format) {:action=>"create", :controller=>"photos"} new_photo GET /photos/new(.:format) {:action=>"new", :controller=>"photos"} edit_photo GET /photos/:id/edit(.:format) {:action=>"edit", :controller=>"photos"} photo GET /photos/:id(.:format) {:action=>"show", :controller=>"photos"} PUT /photos/:id(.:format) {:action=>"update", :controller=>"photos"} DELETE /photos/:id(.:format) {:action=>"destroy", :controller=>"photos"} Here are the relevant routes when I changed the route to match 'upload': photo_comments GET /photos/:photo_id/comments(.:format) {:action=>"index", :controller=>"comments"} POST /photos/:photo_id/comments(.:format) {:action=>"create", :controller=>"comments"} } new_photo_comment GET /photos/:photo_id/comments/new(.:format) {:action=>"new", :controller=>"comments"} edit_photo_comment GET /photos/:photo_id/comments/:id/edit(.:format) {:action=>"edit", :controller=>"comments"} photo_comment GET /photos/:photo_id/comments/:id(.:format) {:action=>"show", :controller=>"comments"} PUT /photos/:photo_id/comments/:id(.:format) {:action=>"update", :controller=>"comments"} DELETE /photos/:photo_id/comments/:id(.:format) {:action=>"destroy", :controller=>"comments"} update_states_photos GET /photos/update_states(.:format) {:action=>"update_states", :controller=>"photos"} upload_photo /photos/:id/upload(.:format) {:action=>"upload", :controller=>"photos"} photos GET /photos(.:format) {:action=>"index", :controller=>"photos"} POST /photos(.:format) {:action=>"create", :controller=>"photos"} new_photo GET /photos/new(.:format) {:action=>"new", :controller=>"photos"} edit_photo GET /photos/:id/edit(.:format) {:action=>"edit", :controller=>"photos"} photo GET /photos/:id(.:format) {:action=>"show", :controller=>"photos"} PUT /photos/:id(.:format) {:action=>"update", :controller=>"photos"} DELETE /photos/:id(.:format) {:action=>"destroy", :controller=>"photos"} Unfortunately 'match' didn't work any better... -- EDIT -- Just to confirm another scenario here... with this in the routes: resources :photos do resources :comments collection do get 'update_states' end member do match 'upload' end end and this in the view: form_for @photo, :remote => true, :url => { :action => 'upload' }, :html => { :multipart => :true, :id => 'photo_upload' } do |f| I still get: No route matches {:action=>"upload", :controller=>"photos"}

  • Best Way to Archive Digital Photos and Avoid Duplicate File Names

    - by user31575
This problem pertains to archiving of digital pictures taken from multiple cameras. Answers here covered the general topic of the-mechanics-of-backups: How do you archive digital photos and videos ? I however face another problem. Having multiple cameras (canon) and multiple SD cards (mixed and matched at random), I have found that different SD cards have different photos with the same file name, i.e. two different photos each name IMG_3141.JPG. Additionally, for better or worse, I've backed up the files to multiple places and need to consolidate my backups. I want to eliminate duplicates, but not clobber files. The only way I can think of is to append the code (md5 or sha1) to the file name, i.e. IMG_3141.JPG becomes IMG_3141_KT229QZ31415926ASDF.JPG, then sorting them out Any better ways? (Note "open letter" address the 'duplicate file name' concern): http://photofocus.com/2010/09/13/an-open-letter-to-digital-camera-manufacturers-regarding-camera-file-naming/ )

  • best way to quickly share multiple photos without permanently hosting them

    - by dsollen
I find that I'm often asked to share lots of photos with someone, enough that uploading each one individually to them gets tedious when I would like to drag and drop the whole bunch. I could put them on photobucket, but some of them are semi-private; private enough that I don't want them to be easily found on image hosting sites. Are there any convenient ways of sharing these photos quickly but still being able to remove them from the inter-webs afterwards (without too much hassle)? I have found Yahoo Messenger complete version has great photo sharing options; but not everyone has it and I can't expect people to download it just to see some photos.

  • Software for printing small photos on larger paper with easy layout snapping

    - by ldigas
Have some photos and pictures to print (graphs, but that doesn't matter here). So far when printing I inserted them in MS Word, played with layout on the paper, and after half a day, finally managed to get it just right. Usually then, the power runs out :-) Anyways, does anyone know of any software which enables me to easily put up some kind of a layout (one under the other, or some rectangular grid) where I can just "snap" photos next to each other, before printing the whole thing. I know I can do that in pretty much any photo editing program, but the problem is that that pixel hunting takes time ... and is generally a very annoying process, expecially when you don't want to edit the photos in mind, just print them out. Anyways, I'm sure you get the general idea ... Suggestions ?

  • Using photos from network drive with Windows 8 photo app

    - by Paul
I have photos on my network drive that I want to display (in live tiles preferably in the photo app). Under c:\users\paul\pictures I have made a link to them, using mklink /d: And this works fine in classic: But nothing appears in the photo.app: I am guessing that this is an issue with indexing - the photos won't appear until they are indexed, and Windows won't normally index a network drive (unless you make it "available offline, which just copies the files locally) - but this is exactly what the mklink was supposed to work around, and the properties show it is indexable: Any ideas?

  • Issues related to storing photos in Active Directory?

    - by Joe_Jones_442Hemi
Are their any known issues with storing employee photos in AD provided you store them in the compliant sizes and formats? Is there a critical mass that you break or could corrupt AD databases? I'm trying to understand some of the server teams deep concerns with our intent to store employee photos in AD... they fear it will corrupt the database or replication issues will occur globally, etc. We're about a 3,000 employee company.

  • Program to Help Order Undated Photos

    - by Richard
I have a large number of photos which have the correct DateTimeOriginal set in EXIF. I have about 300 photos for which the DateTimeOriginal is completely wrong. The DateTimeOriginals of these photos are not correlated, so I cannot change their time en masse. It must be done individually. I'm looking for a program that would essentially allow me to drag and drop the incorrectly time stamped photos into their place in the sequence of correctly time stamped photos. It would be nice to then be able to have the DateTimeOriginal tag updated, or the photos renamed chronologically. Thanks!

  • Google Updates Picasa Web Albums; Emphasis on Sharing and Showcasing

    - by ETC
Google has dusted off the Picasa Web interface and updated it with an emphasis on highlighting your photos and the photos of those you’re interested in. The new interface gives you speedy access to all the new photos you’ve uploaded and all the photos your friends, family, and others you’re following are sharing. Mixed in with that are popular photos from talented photographers across the service. • Nested UIScrollView-iPhone photos application

    - by abhishek trivedi
Hi, I have been facing the same nested UIScrollView problem for long time.I tried some open source codes like Scrolling madness ,three-20 and others but all fails finaly.I am trying to make a photo Viewer application same as iPhone. For that I have created the structure like this:- 1)one View controller. 2)on view of view controller one UIScrollView (i.e inner/parent scroll view) as a child. 3)on inner/parent scroll view number of child scroll views(i.e. outer/child scroll views) ,each represents one page of photos application. 4)On each scroll view one image View on which i am displaying my image. So what I want is when user scrolls the outer scroll view it should scroll horizontally with all the child views so I will get the look and feel of paging in photos application. Also when user is on one specific image(i.e. child/outer scroll view) he should be able to zoom in/out,swipes and perform single/double tapping.I was able to make it work in sdk 2.1,but it dosnt work since sdk 3.0.Please tell me the idea behind your project.Means which scroll view you are subclassing ,in which view to detect touches. How this completely child - parent relation should be. If possible provide any sample code also.

  • Way to auto resize photos before uploaded to cloud service?

    - by AndroidHustle
I love using auto syncing services to have my photos taken with my smartphone stored on a cloud storage service. One problem though is that the photos are uploaded in high resolution and takes up a lot of space on the drive. I wonder if any one knows of a service/strategy to have the auto uploaded photo resized to have it occupy less space when auto stored? That is, without me having to take the photos with lesser quality, I still want photos taken with the highest quality since I may take a photo I really like.

  • Photos being copied all over the place

    - by plua
We have a rather popular website with plenty of photos. Our whole business depends on our content - and the photos are important in this. We invest a lot of time, effort, and money into taking these pictures. On our website we have clear copyright notices, we have the website name and logo in the photos, and we have a Photo Licensing page which states the prices of licensing our photos. Despite all this, our photos are copied by personal and commercial websites alike. We really want to do something about this. We do not want them to take out the photos and leave it at that. We want them to pay for the usage, as we clearly state on our website. Now a few questions come to mind: Can we legally force them to pay right away? Or are we obligated to first write a "Cease and Desist" letter? Photos are used on websites throughout the world. Are there any worldwide rules for this? Has anybody experience with doing these things outside of their home country? Should we hire a lawyer in any country? Or could a local lawyer contact oversees companies directly?

When entering in https://developers.facebook.com/tools/explorer/ certain photo ID from that group it brings almost all data, even comments, but not the like count. For like part it needs (according to docs) access token despite the fact that anyone can access that info. How to get access token of my page/group with required permissions and how to use it to get info I need? If possible I would like to get JSON from a single address if it is possible.

  • How to adjust and combine multiple lower quality photos into one better using FOSS?

    - by Vi
I have multiple noisy photos (caputed without tripod) that needs to be adjusted (moved/rotated) and averaged. How it's better to do it in Linux with FOSS console-based programs? Current way is something like: mplayer mf://*.JPG -vo yuv4mpeg:file=qqq.yuv transcode -i qqq.yuv -y null -J stabilize=maxshift=500:fieldsize=100:fieldnum=6:stepsize=50:shakiness=10 transcode -i qqq.yuv -J transform=smoothing=100000:sharpen=0:optzoom=0 -y raw -o www.yuv mplayer www.yuv -vo pnm gm convert -average 0*.ppm q.ppm i.e.: Convert photos to video Apply Transcode's "Stabilize" filter Convert the video back to images Average the images. It works, but bad: photos still not perfectly adjusted and the whole sequence is very slow. What is better way of doing it?
