• Toshiba Portege M400 screen rotation not working under Windows 7 x64

  I have installed Windows 7 on my Toshiba Portege M400. This in itself was relatively tricky.* However, the button utilities aren't quite working for me. One of the buttons tries to launch the Toshiba Assist program, which doesn't appear to be available under Windows 7 for the M400, but this I can live without. More important is that the screen won't rotate as it is supposed to when you hold the "cancel" (X in a circle) button on the bezel. The PC is set to run "C:\Program Files (x860\Toshiba\Toshiba Rotation Utility\phtrot.exe". There is a "trot.exe" file in the same directory (the former appears to be to cause slightly different behaviour when rotation is done by press and hold). Neither of these programs rotates the screen either by using the buttons or from the command line. The screen is rotating normally when switching from tablet to laptop mode, so there does not appear to be an inherent problem with rotation. I'd just like to be able to use the buttons on the side of the screen to change the screen orientation. Windows XP used to have a "setrot" utility to do this, but that seems to have gone in Windows 7 Thanks for your help. *Just in case anyone comes looking for how to do this, you need to extract driver files from http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/util_raid_os2007252a.exe, which does not seem to be listed among the available files for the m400. This executable contains the SATA interface drivers that will need to be loaded by the installer before it can see your hard disk drive. It needs to be unpacked and the files copied to a USB key which they can then be loaded from in the install process. The utilities etc. for installation post windows install are all available from the Toshiba USA support website.

• Lubuntu 14.04 graphics problem on portege r100

  first of all I have to say that I am not an expert. I have installed Lubuntu 14.04 on my Portege R100. The problem is that the graphics session does not start. Actually I can do all but only by command line. I try to start Xsession but nothing happens. Actually by typing startx the system stop to works. I read several threads on this topic but I did not find such kind of problem. There is something similar about portege r100 concerning lowgraphics mode but the porblem I have seems to be different because graphics session does not start. Can anyone help me ? Thank you Best

• Freezes for unknown reasons, causing fan to go crazy on a Portege laptop

  I have recently installed Natty on a new Toshiba Portege laptop. I find it extremely irritating that the system freezes frequently, about every other time I use the computer. Then the fan goes crazy and I have to force-shutdown. It seems to happen no matter what I do; I encountered this problem when using Firefox, LibreOffice, Adobe Reader - probably when using only terminals too, but I'm not certain. It may be fan-related, because the computer seems to get heated up compared compared to earlier, but I am not sure about that. Any ideas why this could be happening?

• Boot Toshiba Portege M200 with no CD drive

  This has not CD drive and I would like to boot to Acronis to reload from an image that I created. I don't know how else to get the OS and all the drivers loaded. It doesn't seem to have Toshiba hidden boot partion on the HD. It doesn't seem to recognize my USB external CD drive or my USB flash drive. Any ideas? Paul

• Cannot get Atheros AR9285 to work on 12.10

  I've already went through all possible advices and still cannot start my Atheros AR9285 wireless card. I have a laptop Toshiba Portege Z830 where the WiFi already worked under Windows 7. But after migration on Ubuntu 12.10. I'm not able get it work. • PAE on Ubuntu 12.04

  I am having trouble using PAE on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32bit. I recently upgraded from 4 to 8gb of RAM but PAE doesn't appear to have picked this up. When I run "grep --color=always -i PAE /proc/cpuinfo" I get pae in the list. When I run "dmidecode | grep Size | grep MB" Installed Size is 3825 but the Maximum Total Memory Size: 8192 MB. When I check the BIOS it says there is 8192 MB available and the computer fully supports I have followed everything I can find on the internet (including this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EnablingPAE) and nothing is working. My Computer is a Toshiba Portege m750. It has an Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor. Bought in 2009 Thanks, JamesStewy

• Bluetooth no longer working?

  I am using a Toshiba Portege A600 and have been using Ubuntu for about a year now. When I first installed Ubuntu "10.10", everything worked fine, including bluetooth. I was able to send and receive files. After upgrading to 11.04 and then to 11.10, bluetooth functionality decreased. I was able to view bluetooth devices, but not be able to pair or connect to them. Now, on 12.04, bluetooth is no longer recognised at all. When I open up the Bluetooth settings application, it says "No Bluetooth Adapters found". What is the cause of this, and how can I fix it.   I need to fix Ubuntu Accounts some how but don't really see how it could be done. The problem is: files /etc/passwd and /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts where changed. /etc/passwd After John:x:1000:1000:John,,,:/home/serg:/bin/bash Befoure serg:x:1000:1000:John,,,:/home/serg:/bin/bash /etc/hosts After 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 John-The-Rippe Befoure 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.1.1 serg-Protege /etc/hostname After John-The-Ripper Befoure serg-PORTEGE-Z835 I was trying to simply changed this files but can not do this because permission denied. When I'm trying to login as a root I got this message: John@John-The-Ripper:~$ sudo -s [sudo] password for John: John is not in the sudoers file. Then I tried to go to the GRUB menu and from there log in as a root. I did this, but however When I tryed to create user serg, It gave me an error that group already exist.   I'm developing software for tablet pcs and so far I've used some lenovo's (x41), some toshiba's (portege m200) and some gateways (M275). Granted: the machines we've gotten have predominantly been refurbs, but they're failing 80-90% of the time. Part of the reason that they're failing is users inevitably dropping them, so I'm looking at potentially some rugged tablet pcs. The problem that I'm running into is that Current tablet pcs are high spec (much higher than I'm looking for at least) The rugged tablet manufacturer space seems to be filled with lots of small companies that I don't trust yet. I'm looking for tablet PCs (keyboard or no) that can support: XP tpc (optional win 7) single core 1.5-2ghz 1gb ram wifi optional gsm optional gps very optional vehicle docking solutions The budget I've got is tight (but slightly flexible - So are there any reputable tablet pc vendors out there that can do this.

• How do you recommend installing Linux on a computer that has no external drive or ability to boot fr

  I have an old Toshiba Portege 3505 "ultralight" laptop, meaning it doesn't have any kind of disk drive on it at all, that I'd like to completely reformat and install Linux on. However, it won't boot from any drive (and I don't have any on hand), so I'll have to install it from a USB drive (which I doubt it boots from either). (I'm not sure how to change the settings in my BIOS to get my computer to boot from a USB stick. Any ideas for this?) How do you recommend I do this? I want to note that I don't want to run Linux off a LiveUSB, I want to actually install it on the machine. I was thinking about Damn Small Linux, it's tiny and all I need. Any advice or suggestions for something else though? Finally, I'm a total newbie to this, I've never installed Linux on anything before so I might be a little slow on some stuff! Thanks!

• Why do things change between using a LiveCD/LiveUSB and installing Ubuntu?

  Here have been a couple of weird experiences I've had with a Ubuntu LiveCD or LiveUSB: 1) I had one of the original Chromebooks (CR-48). I ended up wiping ChromeOS and installing only Ubuntu 12.04.0 just after it came out. It worked like a charm. About a year later, I broke something and reinstalled Ubuntu using 12.04.3 on a LiveUSB. The LiveUSB worked perfectly - screen resolution, wifi, trackpad all worked fine. I installed it (once installing updates, once stock from the USB drive) and both times screen resolution, wifi, and trackpad all broke. I ended up downloading 12.04.0 and installing it then upgrading to 12.04.3 after the fact and everything worked perfectly once again. 2) I purchased a Toshiba Portege z935 and the LiveUSB worked perfectly, namely the wifi. After install, wifi was extremely slow and basically couldn't load any pages. The answer was that Bluetooth conflicted somehow with wifi and Bluetooth had to be disabled to get wifi to work. Yet both could be enabled in the LiveUSB version, no problem. So my question is, why does this happen? Why does everything work perfectly from the LiveUSB version but then get broken when installed on the system? Is there a different way to install Ubuntu that would allow things to be installed over exactly as they were on the LiveUSB version (drivers, settings, etc)? Are there assumptions that the install makes that I could override somehow?

• Can't connect to Internet through WiFi, but can with cable

  I'm using Windows 7 32-bit, Toshiba Portege laptop. I want to connect to the WiFi, usually I can do that easily. But, I don't know.. maybe when I tried to install a Microsoft Research: Mesh Virtual WiFi that could connect more than 2 wireless networks. I wanna try in connecting both Wireless router and my personal Ad-Hoc. Now, my laptop don't recognize my WiFi, well, I can connect to the WiFi but it says: "Limited access" and doesn't really connect to the internet. But when I plug the LAN cable, it works. I know the problem is in the laptop's wireless connection or in the properties. Any help for this? UPDATE: The IP and DNS settings, I set to automatic, and when I ran diagnostic, Windows tells me that the wireless network adapter is the problem, but they told me to insert the LAN cable, so how to fix the wireless? They didn't tell me how to fix that.

• Acronis Disk Director AFTER Clone Disk error: PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

  Used Acronis Disk Director on my desktop, plugged in the laptop drive 240GB SSD (USB) and the new hard drive 500GB SSD (usb) and the copy seemed to be fine. I didnt see any error messages but I didnt stare at it for 3 hours either. The clone disk of course the Toshiba hidden restore partition, the primary partition C drive and the active (boot?) partition and yes, did check box for copy NT signature. The computer boots up fine most of the time, but it seems that when the computer goes to sleep (i believe its sleep, hard to do much testing during school) or hibernate or reboot it will sometimes display this message: Intel(R) Boot Agent GE v1.3.52 Copyright (C) 1997-2010, Intel Corporation PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent Insert system disk in drive. Press any key when ready... Of course any key does nothing but repeat a similar method. However, if I press the power button on the laptop (Toshiba Portege R705, Win 7 Pro 64-bit) it puts computer into hibernate. After hibernating I press power button again and it comes out of hibernation without any odd messages or problems described above... so apparently that is my TEMP fix. Another recent issue I noticed is on occasion when creating a new folder or modifying something in the system variables, other random areas I will get a message: "The Stub received bad data" and simply retry the task and it works. Perhaps these two issues are linked.
