• Server Restart's and Respective Orders

  EDIT:Not meaning to be disrespectful to any of the answers, but, the main question was whether rebooting a DC at the beginning of a cycle, then all the other servers, or rebooting it at the end once all the others are back online - is there a reason for doing it either way? I'm still not sure based on current responses. This will most likely seem like a fairly, maybe even stupid, question, but it's something I have been wondering about. As part of a regular process for clients servers are restarted remotely after patches and every client tends to have a similar order - but there always seems to be a small debate when it comes down to when do you reboot your DC. For example, 4 servers, 1 DC, 1xExchange, 1xBESX and 1xRandom, lets say it has some CRM software installed, is it best to reboot the DC first, then Exchange, then BESX and so on - or reboot all the servers, then reboot the DC last? - Perhaps it doesn't matter at all and it's just a case of how you have always done it. Would it change in a Hyper-V environment for example, with a physical DC, 1 VHost with all your servers virtualised on that Host? Rebooting the VHost and Virtual Machines first, then the DC at the end, or vice versa? Thanks!

The dialog has two options: restart or shutdown. Choose either one logs me out. Syslog has the following line about restart: WARNING: Unable to restart system: Authorization is required This happened after I installed NTP and some OpenStack packages while working in a prototype project. The only problem that I have found so far is that I cannot shut-down or restart the laptop. It always continues showing "Lubuntu" and some dots. • Blank Processes (?) in Natty Narwhal

  I've noticed that there a seemingly blank processes (no process name, no cmdline info, only an ID), which also appear to cause my CPU to be running like crazy. My fans are going pretty much full speed and I have no idea what to do. Restarting does not help. Whenever I try to kill the process IDs, nothing happens. It's like new blank processes are continuously being created. I am really surprised that I am able to write up this question without Firefox lagging like crazy (and trust me, it's not Firefox causing the issue, as far as I can tell).

  I have a thin client with 112mb RAM which boots ubuntu server 12.04.1 from a usb drive with openbox and it is to be used by students to communicate with cisco equipment. And because of this the students need to be able to reconfigure the network interface and then restart it without a reboot using the only user - cisco. • Forcing a Service to Restart at Boot

  So I use winbind and samba to connect to an AD domain at work, and one of my ubuntu machines has been having issues. At boot, I cannot log in as an AD user, but if I log in as the local user and do a sudo service winbind restart it works fine. Yes, winbind does start at boot, although for some reason incorrectly I think. I can't tell anything from the logs, and I'm just wondering how to force winbind to restart after it starts the first time, at boot. Thanks!

• Restart Trouble Ubuntu 12.10

  I`ve installed Ubuntu 12.10 on 3 different machines: Acer AspireOne Netbook Lenovo T60 Notebook Desktop - P5P77 - Asus mainboard - I3 - porcessor I have the same issue on all of themm they won`t restart (Shut Down work), I can see the proceses are killed but it freezez on black screen total iresponsive. Even when I access the bios config to modify something then Save&Exit then restart I get the same thing. This is the same for all 3 machines. I also cleaned up the desktop system, last version of bios update, full HDD format, fresh win7 installed (practicly no trace of the old Ubuntu 12.10) still the same problem. Some time ago I had Ubuntu 11.10 on the desktop system, it worked perfectly. I also mention that I tried all combinations of ACPI settings in BIOS, unfortunately with no results. • Shutdown, Restart, Halt issues, not powering off system

  Before any one says search around, I have, to no avail. I can't seem to get it working after trying every fix out there. So basically, when I turn off my laptop it shuts down fine but the last line is "System will now halt" but power never gets cut, I've tried shutdown -P and shutdown -h same result. Then when I try restart it goes through the same process but hangs on "System will now restart" But I can't figure it out, I am running full Ubuntu with no other Operating Systems. Any tips?

• windows 8.1 crash after restart

  I have installed dual boot wind8.1 with ubuntu 14.04. when I turn on the computer from a complete shut down status, everything is alright and I can access both win 8.1 and ubuntu from grub. but when I restart from win or ubuntu, if I choose win in grub menu, the system crashes without even entering the windows welcome screen! it just stays on a dark messed up page and I have to shutdown the system by keeping the power button. I tried to reinstall ubuntu and also using boot-repair, non worked!

• Out of range on shut down, Log Out, Restart and Suspend

  I have looked extensively on the help forums but haven't found a similar problem. Whether I want to Shut Down, Restart, Log Out or Suspend, as soon as I select my desired option the screen goes black with a message (Out of Range displayed in the middle of the screen. No combination of keys frees the screen and I have to manually hold the power button on my PC to shut it down. There is no problem on start up. My computer is a dual boot with Windows 7.

• Remote reboot over ssh does not restart

  I would like to remotely reboot my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server via ssh. I do sudo reboot and I loose connection and the server connection does not reappear. It does not ping. When I go the the physical computer with a screen attached I see a black screen and hear that the server is still on. I do a hard power off (press power on button for a few seconds) and the server halts. After I press power on the server boots with no problem. As far as I remember the remote reboot has previously worked on that server. I wonder if sudo reboot & will help? I suppose I could also try sudo shutdown -r and see if that does any difference. I have listed an excerpt of /etc/log/syslog below. The last thing it records is the stopping of the logging.   It appears that sc.exe isn't capable of setting the 'restart service after' parameter and powershell isn't capable of setting up service restarts at all. My intended configuration is failure1/restart failure2/restart failure3/nothing with a five minute counter between each restart. The five minute timer is extremely important. Is there anything else I can look at other than some registry hackery configure this?

• IIS6 cannot start additional processes when page request is called from other than localhost

  I have a web application dll that is running under iis6. This is starting a number of processes to be able to handle more than one request at the time. This is working perfect in a numbers of installations. In this particular installation, it runs perfectly when initialized by a call in IE on the server using http://localhost/apppath . The problem is when the processes are from another location, i.e. another computer on the same network initialising the call throught http://servername/apppath . In this case, the initial dll running under iis is executing (proved by logging), but it fails to initialize the additional processes. If the additional processes are already initialized by a call from localhost, it also works when called from another machine (in this case, it is just attached to the existing processes).

• Restart my graphics card without rebooting?

  Wondered if it is possible to use DevCon to restart a display device as a stop-gap solution to artifacts left over from a graphics card malfunction? In particular it leaves my cursor very un-user-friendly: I found out the hardware ID of my display adapter through device manager (below) [(windows key + pause break) - device manager - display adapters - right click your display adapter - properties - details - hardware ids.] I tried the commands (opened with admin privileges) devcon restart "PCI\VEN_1002" and devcon restart =display but it always come back with No devices restarted.. Is it even possible to restart the graphics card without a system reboot?

• Apache2 worker mpm too many processes

  I've got Apache installed with the worker mpm which seems to have too many processes active in spite of the configurations in place. I'll detail the configs below : StartServers 2 MinSpareThreads 10 MaxSpareThreads 25 ThreadsPerChild 25 MaxClients 150 Based on these settings, we should be seeing a maximum of 1 Apache control process (uid:root) and 6 Apache client processes (uid:www). This being due to MaxClients/ThreadsPerChild. However, I'm seeing a total of 1 Apache control process and 9 Apache client processes. init -- apache2(root) -- -- apache2(www) -- -- apache2(www) -- 1 thread -- -- apache2(www) -- 26 threads -- -- apache2(www) -- 26 threads init -- apache2(www) -- 2 threads -- apache2(www) -- apache2(www) -- apache2(www) We do not make it a habit of restarting Apache nor the Server, and will perform a reload 2-3 times a day at times so as to add new VHOSTs.   We have an IBM P series box running AIX 5.3. This is our application server, whereby our J2EE application is running in Oracle's Applications Server (version 10g r2). At around 11pm till the next day 7am, we have shell scripts running, which executes Java class programs. Recently, this server has been experiencing some high memory usage, which caused some of the Java class programs throwing "Out of memory" exception . We normally use NMON to monitor the server's resources, such as CPU, I/O, memory, etc. But because of this OOM issue, we would like to know throughout the day, what are the processes which are running and how much memory each process consumed. NMON is not able to show this. Even with the "-T" parameter, it only shows the top processes and not all. Is there any thing we can use to monitor all the processes' memory?

• processes slow after some time of actively running

  i have several cron jobs running on an ubuntu machine. each one does some pretty heavy load stuff. The cron jobs are parsing files and the bigger the file the longer it takes them to parse it. The strange thing is that if i make the files too big ( like 30mb) the script kind of hangs. It starts processing them really enthusiastically but after some time (something like 5-10 minutes) the cpu usage of the process drops a lot and it gets into some "zombie" state. If prior to this the process in htop was using 70-80% of the CPU then after this drop occurs it slows down to something like 5-10%. the load average drops down as well. The status of the processes sometimes changes to D in htop, which AFAIR stands for zombie. Today i noticed the same behavior of processes of mysql when executing heavy queries (a query took something like 4 hours to execute). the cron jobs are mostly php and during their processing most of the CPU eats the php process and not mysql. so i think the issue is not with a specific language/program but with the way the processes are "managed". The only other place i've seen similar behavior was on my Amazon EC2 micro instance when after some aggressive use of CPU the CPU quota was taking effect and everything was slowing down dramatically. This is a dedicated machine running ubuntu. what may be the cause?

A common and practical way to easy release those locks and unlock the site (while the dev team refactor its application to avoid the locks), is to simply restart the apache server. • IIS6 Virtual SMTP server isn't coming back up automatically after a system restart

  I've got a virtual server running Win2008 RC2. I've set up IIS6 with a virtual SMTP server on it to be the mail provider for the websites I'm hosting there. It all works great, but if for some reason the server reboots (auto updates are still enabled - I'm trying to make this as little work as possible as we've got a Lot of clients), the IIS6 doesn't restart the SMTP server. The failure causes 500 errors on the current setup, so I'm spending half the day apologising. Any ideas? In Services I've set everything to come back up automatically, but still no dice. As soon as I restart the SMTP, no problems, all the mail gets sent. It's working perfectly, it just won't restart on it's own. I'd really rather not turn auto updates off as we're such a small company I just can't spare the time to be manually updating 15 copies of windows every time MS decide there's a security patch. All advice appreciated! BTW, I am a complete newb to these forums. I searched but couldn't find an answer, so please be nice. But firm. I've got to learn here.
