More context There is this pretty well-know person in the software engineering world named Robert C. Martin. He speaks at conferences and has published many excellent books one of which is Clean Code (Amazon). He is the founder and CEO of Object Mentor Inc. Robert C. Martin is also called Uncle Bob. But I can't figure out why.

    Data governance,veri ile ilgili islemler için bir sorumluluklar sistemidir. Bu sistemin temelini ise politikalar, standartlar ve prosedürler olusturur. Sistem politikalar, standartlar ve prosedürler sayesinde verinin ne zaman, hangi sartlar altinda, hangi eylemlerde, hangi yöntemler ile kimler tarafindan kullanilacagina karar verir. Sistemin kurumda basarili bir sekilde islemesi için öncelikle kurumda farkindalik saglanmasi gereklidir. Farkindalik saglandiktan sonra ise kurum governance ve mimari kültürünü benimsemelidir. Ancak bu sartlar altinda sistem basarili bir sekilde isleyebilecektir. Bu sebeplerden dolayidir ki data governance kisa bir süreç degil, aksine kurum varligini sürdürdügü sürece isleyecek olan bir süreçtir. Bu durum bize data governance in bir proje degil bir program oldugunu açiklamaktadir. Programin baslangicinda kurumun ihtiyaçlarinin netlesmesi ve farkindaligin saglanmasi temeldir. Hedef kitle ise, veri ile dogrudan ve ya dolayli olarak iliski içerisinde olan herkesdir. Bu sebeple programin baslangicinda hedef kitleyi içeren ekipler ile toplantilar düzenlenecektir. Bu toplantilar sayesinde hem farkindalik saglanacak hemde ekiplerin ihtiyaçlari birebir ekipler tarafindan aktarilarak netlesecektir. Hedef kitlenin ihtiyaçlari netlestirildikten sonra ise devamli isleyecek olan bu sürecin planlamasi yapilacaktir. Bu sürecin planlanmasinda ihtiyaçlarin önceliklendirilmesi gerekmektedir. Sebebi ise her ekibin ihtiyaçlarinin farkli olabilecegi ve bütün ihtiyaçlara ayni anda karsilik verilemeyebileceginin öngörülmesidir. Bu öngörünün temeli ise ekiplerin ihtiyaçlarinin birbirleriyle olan baglantisidir. Süreç planlamasinda ihtiyaçlarin önceliklendirilmesinin ardindan kurumun büyüklügünün gözönünde bulundurulmasi gerekmedir. Kurumun büyüklügünün önemi ise eger kurum bir bütün olarak ayni anda govern edilemeyecek kadar büyük ise ihtiyaçlari öncelikli olarak bulunan ekipler ile govern edilmesine baslanarak sürecin belirli bir hiz ile bütün kurumda isler hale getirilmesini saglamaktir. Ihtiyaçlar belirlendikten ve ilgili ekipler seçildikten sonra artik programin planlanmasina geçilebilecek. Programin planlama asamasinda öncelikli olarak sürecin asamalarini kontrol edecek ve süreç kurum içerisinde isleyise geçtiginde kontrolü saglayacak olan Data Governance Office in planlanmasidir. Office in planlanmasiyla birlikte süreçteki roller ve bu rollerin sorumluluklari belirlenecektir. Planlama asamasinda Data governance office, roller ve sorumluluklar, güvenlik ve veri saklanan sistemler ele alinacak konulardir. Planlama asamasi tamamlandiginda ise belirlenen ekipler ve ihtiyaçlar dogrultusunda programin isleyis asamasina geçilebilecektir. Isleyis kisminda ekibin ihtiyaçlari dogrultusunda güvenlik konusunda ve veri saklanan sistemler üzerinde çalismalar yapilacaktir. Bu yapilan çalismalar bir süreç olarak dökümante edilecek ve süreç sona erdiginde baska bir ekiple baska bir ihtiyaç dogrultusunda çalisma yapilarak ayni süreç isletilecek ve böylece kurum içesinde ilgili süreçte standartlasma saglanacaktir. Güvenlik konusunda verinin erisim güvenligi ve kullanim güvenligi ele alinacaktir. Veri saklanan sistemler üzerindeki çalismalar ise saklanan sistemlerin program dahilinde belirlenen standartlar ile olusturulmasi ve yönetilmesi saglanacaktir. Isleyis kisminin ardindan ise programin izleme kismina geçilecektir. Bu kisimda artik Data Governance Office olusmus, politikalar, standartlar ve prosedürler belirlenmistir. Ve Data Governance Office çalisanlari rolleri ve sorumluluklari dahilinde programin isleyisini izleyecek ve gerek gördügünde politikalar standartlar ve prosedürler üzerinde degisiklikler yapacaklardir.

Just finished up Twin Cities Code Camp 8, and had a blast! Always good to see these guys. First of all, up-coming speaking engagements: Iowa Code Camp – May 1st in Iowa City, IA [more info] DevLink – August 5-7 in Nashville, TN [more info]   Plus I am organizing a second developer’s conference in Kansas City. Kansas City Developer’s Conference (KCDC) – June 19th in Kansas City [more info]   I will also be doing Lunch & Learns for my company in April and May at JCCC: April 29th, May 12th and May 27th at Johnson County Community College in Kansas City.   So May, June and August are covered. I may just take July off, I could use a break after KCDC is over.

  • Compilation of Etherpad fails in an OpenVZ VE

    Hi everyone. I’m almost giving up, this will be my last try: I try to compile Etherpad on my OpenVZ server. It’s running a Debian 5.0 as the host system, in the VE I’ve got Ubuntu 10.04. I installed Etherpad in this VE with the instructions from the official Ubuntu Wiki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Etherpad. Everything runs fine until it comes to compilation. After calling bin/build.sh as described in the wiki the first steps are running fine. But then I’m running into a memory error: java.io.IOException: Cannot run program "cp": java.io.IOException: error=12, Cannot allocate memory Well, I understand the error message but don’t see the cause. The command free tells me that there’s plenty memory left in this VE: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2415236 1140872 1274364 0 0 0 -/+ buffers/cache: 1140872 1274364 Swap: 0 0 0 Beautiful. But even repeating the compilation process doesn’t bring me any further. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Fresh Proxmox VE 2.1 installation with defaults can't be reached or pinged

    I am using the lastest Proxmox VE 2.1. My server has two NICS with a uplink only connected into eth0. My Server is a co-located server utilizing public IPv4 IPs. It is not behind a firewall or any system which monitors traffic. Via IPKVM I did a fresh install of Proxmox, I put in the correct IP, Mask, Gateway, and DNS information. The install went perfectly fine with no errors. Upon completion and rebooting the system: I am unable to reach the web GUI via the browser, it just times out. I am unable to ping the server. I am unable to ping outside to the Internet from within the server. Tried pinging out to 4.2.2.2 and yahoo.com I tried rebooting the server and restarting the network service. IFCONFIG shows my IP information under vmbro0 which also has the same MAC address as the eth0 device. eth0 only displays a IPv6 Scope:Link address, which I did not setup myself. This is my first time installing proxmox, but after searching for a few hours it doesn't seem like anyone else is having the same issue as me from a fresh install with just the defaults. So far the only thing I did was install it. Also, I know the network cable is good and the IP is good because I was running a Xen XCP server with the same network settings prior to wiping it to install proxmox.   • Proxmox VE cluster not working

    I have been using a Proxmox VE 2.0 cluster (2 servers) for months. Today, I had the "bright idea" to install a GUI on one of the servers. I used tasksel, and selected the graphical desktop environment (Gnome). When I rebooted the server, neither of the servers on the cluster could see each other (shows a red light by the server on the sidebar, no statistics). The VMs on each server are working fine, individually. pvecm status on the broken server shows cman_tool: cannot open connection to cman, is it running ?. Running it on the other server outputs a lot of lines (here: http://pastebin.com/HpQfUHTU), but I assume the important bit is expected votes:2 total votes: 1 Trying pvecm delnode (othernode) on either server outputs: cluster not ready - no quorum? Any suggestions as to how I can fix this? Thanks in advance!

    Throughout the book "Agile Principles, Patterns, and Practices in C#" by Robert C. Martin a small Paymentroll application is build. While most of the source code is printed in place, some classes are missing and some are incomplete. The book says on the firest page: The book includes many source code examples that are also available for download from the authors' Web site. Unfortunately this seems to be a lie. Unless either this is not the author's website (the book forgets to mention the authors website adress) or I am blind. Does anyone have the comlete source code for that book preferably in form of a Visual Studio project or knows where I can find it.

    This is a question about the concept of a function doing only one thing. It won't make sense without some relevant passages for context, so I'll quote them here. They appear on pgs 37-38: To say this differently, we want to be able to read the program as though it were a set of TO paragraphs, each of which is describing the current level of abstraction and referencing subsequent TO paragraphs at the next level down. To include the setups and teardowns, we include setups, then we include the test page content, and then we include the teardowns. To include the setups, we include the suite setup if this is a suite, then we include the regular setup. It turns out to be very dif?cult for programmers to learn to follow this rule and write functions that stay at a single level of abstraction. But learning this trick is also very important. It is the key to keeping functions short and making sure they do “one thing.” Making the code read like a top-down set of TO paragraphs is an effective technique for keeping the abstraction level consistent. First, it’s large, and when new employee types are added, it will grow. Second, it very clearly does more than one thing. Third, it violates the Single Responsibility Principle7 (SRP) because there is more than one reason for it to change. Fourth, it violates the Open Closed Principle8 (OCP) because it must change whenever new types are added. Now my questions. To begin, it's clear to me how it violates the OCP, and it's clear to me that this alone makes it poor design. However, I am trying to understand each principle, and it's not clear to me how SRP applies. Specifically, the only reason I can imagine for this method to change is the addition of new employee types. There is only one "axis of change." If details of the calculation needed to change, this would only affect the submethods like "calculateHourlyPay()" Also, while in one sense it is obviously doing 3 things, those three things are all at the same level of abstraction, and can all be put into a TO paragraph no different from the example one: TO calculate pay for an employee, we calculate commissioned pay if the employee is commissioned, hourly pay if he is hourly, etc. So aside from its violation of the OCP, this code seems to conform to Martin's other requirements of clean code, even though he's arguing it does not. Can someone please explain what I am missing? Thanks.

  • Why don't I have write permission to my vmware virtual network device?

    I want to allow my VMWare machine to force the virtual network it's on into promiscuous mode so I can play around with honeyd. I received an error message that told me to go to http://vmware.com/info?id=161 to allow this behavior. Based on their advice, I did: $ groupadd promiscuous $ cat /etc/group | grep promiscuous promiscuous:x:1002:robert $ usermod -a -G promiscuous robert $ id robert uid=1000(robert) gid=1000(robert) groups=1000(robert),....,1002(promiscuous) $ chgrp newgroup /dev/vmnet8 $ chmod g+rw /dev/vmnet8 $ ls -l /dev/vmnet8 crw-rw---- 1 root promiscuous 119, 8 2012-03-29 10:29 /dev/vmnet8 Looks like I gave RW permission to the promiscuous group, and added myself. Except that VMWare still gives me an error message that says I cannot enter promiscuous mode. To try out the group thing, I tried: $ echo "1" >/dev/vmnet8 bash: /dev/vmnet8: Permission denied That really surprised me: It makes me think that I still haven't properly given myself the correct permissions... What am I missing?
