  • DIY Homemade Hybrid Rocket Engine [Video]

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Remember the guy with the cool DIY astronaut ice cream build? He’s back with a mini hybrid rocket engine that runs off oxygen and acrylic. I built a small rocket engine for demonstration purposes. The engine is built from a 2″ diameter acrylic rod through which I drilled a 0.5″ hole. The oxygen at 80 psi or less is passed through the hole and then is forced through a convergent-divergent nozzle at the tail end. The nozzle’s throat is about 0.25″ and expands to 0.625″. I lit the engine by inserting a burning cotton swab (with wooden stick) while a small amount of oxygen was flowing. The acrylic catches fire very easily in a pure oxygen environment. The engine can be throttled and shut off completely, which is a major benefit to hybrid engine designs. Solid-fuel rockets cannot be throttled or shut off, which makes them difficult to control. • Why wont Ubuntu recognize Rogers LTE Rocket stick 330U Sierra wireless modem?

    - by rob lawson
I tried to plug the rocket stick into the USB slot, and Ubuntu does not recognize that there is anything in the drive. I plug in a standard USB thumbdrive and it is recognized right away. Are there any applications to help me open the rogers folders to see the files, and maybe connect to the Internet using said rocket stick 330U? I've been searching for this answer for almost a week now, seems no one knows how to get the net using this piece of technology.

  • GWT Dynamic loading using GWT.create() with String literals instead of Class literals

    - by Sathish
GWT.create() is the reflection equivalent in GWT, But it take only class literals, not fully qualified String for the Class name. How do i dynamically create classes with Strings using GWT.create()? Its not possible according to many GWT forum posts but how is it being done in frameworks like Rocket-GWT (http://code.google.com/p/rocket-gwt/wiki/Ioc) and Gwittir (http://code.google.com/p/gwittir/wiki/Introspection)

  • SpaceX’s Falcon 9 Launch Success And Reusable Rockets Test Partially Successful

    - by Gopinath
Elon Musk’s SpaceX is closing on the dream of developing reusable rockets and likely in an year or two space launch rockets will be reusable just like flights, ships and cars. Today SpaceX launched an upgraded Falcon 9 rocket in to space to deliver satellites as well as to test their reusable rocket launching technology. All on board satellites were released on to the orbit and the first stage of rocket partially succeeded in returning back to Earth. This is a huge leap in space technology.   Couple of years ago reusable rockets were considered as impossible. NASA, Russian Space Agency, China, India or for that matter any other space agency never even attempted to build reusable rockets. But SpaceX’s revolutionary technology partially succeeded in doing the impossible! Elon Musk founded SpaceX with the goal of building reusable rockets and transporting humans to & from other planets like Mars. He says If one can figure out how to effectively reuse rockets just like airplanes, the cost of access to space will be reduced by as much as a factor of a hundred.  A fully reusable vehicle has never been done before. That really is the fundamental breakthrough needed to revolutionize access to space. Normally the first stage of a rocket falls back to Earth after burning out and is destroyed. But today SpaceX reignited first stage rocket after its separation and attempted to descend smoothly on to ocean’s surface. Though it did not fully succeed, the test was partially successful and SpaceX was able to recovers portions of first stage. Rocket booster relit twice (supersonic retro & landing), but spun up due to aero torque, so fuel centrifuged & we flamed out — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) September 29, 2013 With the partial success of recovering first stage, SpaceX gathered huge amount of information and experience it can use to improve Falcon 9 and build a fully reusable rocket. In post launch press conference Musk said if things go "super well", could refly a Falcon 9 1st stage by the end of next year. Falcon 9 Launch Video Next reusable first tests delayed by at least two launches SpaceX has a busy schedule for next several months with more than 50 missions scheduled using the new Falcon 9 rocket. Ten of those missions are to fly cargo to the International Space Shuttle for NASA.  SpaceX announced that they will not attempt to recover the first stage of Falcon 9 in next two missions. The next test will be conducted on  the fourth mission of Falcon 9 which is planned to carry cargo to Internation Space Station sometime next year. This will give time required for SpaceX to analyze the information gathered from today’s mission and improve first stage reentry systems. • A rocket following the tracks height. Not Homing Missile.

    - by confusedEj
What I am trying to create is a rocket that will hug the track in a straight direction. ie) The rocket travels in a straight direction and can orientate based on its local x axis. This is so it can go up/down ramps and never hit the ground. Currently I am using PhysX opengl and C++. This is the method I'm trying right now: 1. Ray cast from ahead of the missile (ray casting downwards) 2. If the ray cast is less then the expected ray cast length, then I have to orientate up. 3. If the ray cast is more then the expected ray cast length, then I have to orientate down. Now the problem, I am having is that my missile is orientating at an arbitary angle (I'm giving it 1 degrees.) Though I think this is a bad approach because the amount of frames in the game is not as much as I would think there would be. So the rocket would run into a ramp. My main question is: is there a better way of approaching this and how? NxVec3 frontRayLoc = m_rocketConfig->getValueForKey<NxVec3>("r_frontRayCastLocation"); float threshhold = m_rocketConfig->getValueForKey<float>("r_angleThreshhold"); float predRayCastHeight = m_rocketConfig->getValueForKey<float>("r_predRayCastHeight"); NxVec3 rayGlobalPos_1 = m_actor->getGlobalPosition() + m_actor->getGlobalOrientation() * frontRayLoc; NxVec3 dir = m_actor->getGlobalOrientation() * NxVec3(0,-1.0,0); NxReal dist1 = castRay(rayGlobalPos_1, dir); // Get the percentage difference float actualFrontHeight = abs(1 - (dist1/predRayCastHeight)); // See if the percentage difference is greater then threshold // Also check if we are being shot off track if ((actualFrontHeight > threshhold) && (dist1 != m_rayMaxDist)){ // Dip Down if (dist1 > predRayCastHeight){ printf("DOWN - Distance 1: %f\n", dist1); // Get axis of rotation NxVec3 newAxis = m_actor->getGlobalOrientation() * NxVec3(1.0,0,0.0); // Rotate based on that axis m_orientateAngle = -1.0 * m_orientateAngle; // For rotating clockwise NxQuat newOrientation(m_orientateAngle, newAxis); NxMat33 orientation(newOrientation); m_orientation = m_orientation * orientation; // Orientate the linear velocity to keep speed of rocket and direct away from road NxVec3 linVel = m_actor->getLinearVelocity(); m_actor->setLinearVelocity(m_orientation * linVel); } // Go Up else if (dist1 < predRayCastHeight){ printf("UP - Distance 1: %f\n", dist1); // Get axis of rotation NxVec3 newAxis = m_actor->getGlobalOrientation() * NxVec3(1.0,0,0.0); // Rotate around axis NxQuat newOrientation(m_orientateAngle, newAxis); m_actor->setGlobalOrientationQuat(newOrientation); NxMat33 orientation(newOrientation); m_orientation = m_orientation * orientation; // Orientate the linear velocity to keep speed of rocket and direct away from road NxVec3 linVel = m_actor->getLinearVelocity(); m_actor->setLinearVelocity(m_orientation*linVel); } m_actor->setGlobalOrientation(m_orientation); } Thanks for the support :)

  • What's a good way to programmatically manage a cloneable entity?

    - by bobobobo
Say you have missiles or rockets that a player can fire. What's a good way to programmatically manage the cloning of a base rocket, for example? I can think of 2 ways to do it: Player has a currently selected weapon (which is an int) When player shoots, the selectedWeapon member is looked at, and the correct instance of rocket is created (with some base parameters) Or Player has a currently selected weapon (which is a pointer, to a "base instance" of the rocket object) When player shoots, the base instance rocket is cloned, transformed, and shot into the game world

  • How do I calculate opposite of a vector, add some slack

    - by Jason94
How can i calulate a valid range (RED) for my object's (BLACK) traveling direction (GREEN). The green is a Vector2 where x and y range is -1 to 1. What I'm trying to do here is to create rocket fuel burn effekt. So what i got is rocket speed (float) rocket direction (Vector2 x = [-1, 1], y = [-1, 1]) I may think that rocket speed does not matter as fuel burn effect (particle) is created on position with its own speed.

  • Are Intel compilers really better than Microsoft ones?

    - by Rocket Surgeon
Years ago I was surprised when discovered that Intel sells Studio compatible compilers. I tried it in particular for C/C++ as well as fantastic diagnostic tools. But the code was simply not that computationally intensive to notice the difference. The only impression was: did Intel really did it for me just now, Wow, amazing tools with nanoseconds resolution, unbeleivable. But the trial ended and team never seriously considered a purchase. From your experience, if license cost does not matter, which vendor is a winner ? It is not broad or vague question or attemt to spark a holy war. This sort of question about 2 very visible tools. Nobody likes when tools have any mysteries or surprises. And choices between best and best are always the pain. I also understand the "grass greener" argument. I want to hear all "what ifs" stories. What if Intel just locally optimizes it for the chip stepping of the month, and not every hardware target will actually work as well as Microsoft compiled ? What if AMD hardware is the target and everything will slow down for no reason ? Or on other hand, what if Intel's hardware has so many unnoticable opportunities, that Microsoft compiler writers are too slow to adopt and never implement in the compiler ? What if both are the same exactly, actually a single codebase just wrapped into 2 different boxes and licensed to both vendors by some 3rd party shop? And so on. But someone knows some answers.

  • 0.00006103515625 GB of RAM. Is .NET MicroFramework part of Windows CE?

    - by Rocket Surgeon
The .NET MicroFramework claims to work on 64K RAM and has list of compatible targets vendors. At the same time, same vendors who ship hardware and create Board Support Packages (vendors like Adeneo) keep releasing something named Windows 7 CE BSP for the same hardware targets. Obviously the OS as heavy as WinCE needs more than 64K RAM. So, somehow .NET MicroFramework is relevant to WinCE, but how ? Is it part of bigger OS or is it base of it, or are both mutually exclusive ? Background: 0.00006103515625 GByte of RAM is same as 64Kbyte of RAM. I am looking for possiblity to use Microsoft development tools for small target like BeagleBone. http://www.adeneo-embedded.com/About-Us/News/Release-of-TI-BeagleBone Nice. Now .. where is a MicroFramework for the same beaglebone ? Is it inside the released pile ?

  • Initial direction of intersection between two moving vehicles?

    - by Larolaro
I'm working with a bit of projectile prediction for my AI and I'm looking for some ideas, any input? If a blue vehicle is moving in a direction at a constant speed of X m/s and a stationary orange vehicle has a rocket that travels Y m/s, which initial direction would the orange vehicle have to fire the rocket for it to hit the blue vehicle at the earliest time in the future? Thanks for reading!

  • Regex in Notepad++ 6

    - by Rocket
So, Notepad++ got updated to v6.0. One of their new features is PCRE (Perl Compatible Regular Expressions). I tried to use this new feature to find and replace things in a file. I tried the regular expression: {\$([a-zA-Z_]*)} and it yelled at me, saying "Invalid regular expression". I tested this regex in other programs (like my main IDE, Geany), and it worked fine. Why does this not work in Notepad++ 6.0?
