• Up in the Air: Team Oracle Play-by-Play

- by Aaron Lazenby
Yesterday, I had the amazing opportunity to fly along with Sean D. Tucker and Team Oracle. Leaving from the San Carols airport, we did a 30 minute flight over the Pacific just south of the coastal town of Half Moon Bay. In that half hour, I rode through a massive 4G loop, survived a crushing hammerhead, and took control of the plane to perform a basic wing over (you can learn what the heck I'm talking about by visiting this website). I have lots of great video, but it's going to take me some time to make sense of it. For now, here's my Twitter-based play-by-play of yesterday's events. Many thanks to Sean D. Tucker and the whole crew (Ben and Ian, especially) for this great opportunity to fly with Team Oracle.Live tweets from @OracleProfitI will be spending the afternoon in a stunt plane, upside down above the San Francisco bay. http://bit.ly/cwkrkIAt the San Carlos airport. More than slightly freaked out. Shaking hands diminish texting ability. Slightly reassuring. http://yfrog.com/1qt61nj There go the doors to the photo plane... #teamoracle http://yfrog.com/58ywljSean D Tucker assures me: "The sky is a great place to be." Helpful, but I'm still nervous. #teamoracle"You get a parachute. He gets a harness." How was this decision made? #teamoracleThe plane with @radu43 has returned. I'm up next...Couldn't help myself...drank a soda before flying. Mistake? We'll see... #teamoracleAdvice of the day "If you pull with two hands, you improve the chances of the chute deploying on the first try." Lovely. #teamoracleI feel so strange. But I flew a high performance airplane. And did an aerobatics move. Wild. #teamoracle"Flying ten feet off he ground, upside-down at 250 miles per hour isn't exciting to me." Sean D. Tucker #teamoracle"What is exciting to me is flying that perfect pattern, just like I imagined it in my head." Sean D. Tucker #teamoracle"You're going to sleep well tonight. You just carried four times your body weight." #teamoracle #gforce Just watched the #teamoracle plane take off for its flight home. I'm waiting for Caltrain. #undignifiedanticlimaxEnough with the #teamoracle. Check http://blogs.oracle.com/profit for the video. Coming soon!

• Tomorrow: Profit Rides into the DANGER ZONE!!!

- by Aaron Lazenby
On May 4 I'll be suiting up with Oracle social media maven Marius Ciortea-- Iceman and Maverick-style--for a flight in the Team Oracle stunt plane. World-renowned pilot Sean Tucker and his team were nice enough to invite us along to participate in aerial photo shoots over Oracle headquarters and the San Francisco bay. I don't think we'll be able to recreate the epic tension generated between Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer in "Top Gun" but we'll do our best to get some good photos, videos, and interviews along the way. Check back on Wednesday for a full report.

• "type" Command Not Working As Expected on Git Bash

- by trysis
The type command, in Linux, returns the location, on the filesystem, of the given file, if it is in the current folder or the $PATH. This functionality is also available through Windows with the Git Bash command line program. The command also returns a file's location given the file without its extension (.exe, .vbs, etc.) However, I have run into what seems like a strange corner case where the file exists on the $PATH but doesn't get returned using the command. I am thinking of buying a new computer soon, so I looked up the method of transferring the license key from one computer to another, in preparation for actually doing this. The method I found mentioned the files slmgr.vbs and slui.exe, both of which reside in the C:/Windows\System32 folder, which is in my $PATH, as usual for a Windows computer. However, these two files aren't showing up when I use the type command. Also, neither gets executed when I call the files as commands without their extensions in Git Bash, and only slmgr.vbs gets executed when I call them with the extensions. Finally, slmgr.vbs is shown when listing the folder's contents in Git Bash, as well, but slui.exe isn't. I thought this might have to do with permissions, and, indeed, both files have very restrictive permissions, as you can see in the pictures below, but they both have the same permissions, which wouldn't explain why one gets executed and the other doesn't when called directly, nor why one file is listed on command line but the other isn't. C:\Windows\System32 folder, proving the files exist: File permissions for the Users and Administrators groups for the two files (they are identical): And the folder: type command and its output in Git Bash for the 2 files, plus listing the files in the folder (using grep to filter as the folder is huge), as well as listing part of the $PATH (keep in mind, for all these, that Git Bash changes the paths as they are displayed): Sean@MYPC ~ $ type -a slmgr sh.exe": type: slmgr: not found Sean@MYPC ~ $ type -a slmgr.vbs sh.exe": type: slmgr.vbs: not found Sean@MYPC ~ $ type -a slui sh.exe": type: slui: not found Sean@MYPC ~ $ type -a slui.exe sh.exe": type: slui.exe: not found Sean@MYPC ~ $ slmgr sh.exe": slmgr: command not found Sean@MYPC ~ $ slmgr.vbs /c/WINDOWS/system32/slmgr.vbs: line 2: syntax error near unexpected token `(' /c/WINDOWS/system32/slmgr.vbs: line 2: `' Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. • Podcast Show Notes: The Red Room Interview – Part 1

- by Bob Rhubart
The latest OTN Arch2Arch podcast is Part 1 of a three-part series featuring a discussion of a broad range of SOA issues with three members of the small army of contributors to The Red Room Blog, now part of the OJam.biz site, the Australia-New Zealand outpost of the global Oracle community. The panelists for this program are: Sean Boiling - Sales Consulting Manager for Oracle Fusion Middleware LinkedIn | Twitter | Blog Richard Ward - SOA Channel Development Manager at Oracle LinkedIn | Blog Mervin Chiang - Consulting Principal at Leonardo Consulting LinkedIn | Twitter | Blog (You can also follow the Red Room itself on Twitter: @OracleRedRoom.) The genesis of this interview goes back to 2009, and the original Red Room blog, on which Sean, Richard, Mervin, and other Red Roomers published a 10-part series of posts that, taken together, form a kind of SOA best-practices guide, presented in an irreverent style that is rare in a lot of technical writing. It was on the basis of their expertise and irreverence that I wanted to get a few of the Red Room bloggers on an Arch2Arch podcast. Easier said than done. Trying to schedule a group interview with very busy people on the other side of world (they’re actually 15 hours in the future, relative to my location) is not a simple process. The conversations about getting some of the Red Room people on the program began in the summer of 2009. The interview finally happened at 5:30 PM EDT on Tuesday March 30, 2010, which for the panelists, located in Australia, was 8:30 AM on Wednesday March 31, 2010. I was waiting for dinner, and Sean, Richard, and Mervin were waiting for breakfast. But the call went off without a hitch, and the panelists carried on a great discussion of SOA issues. Listen to Part 1 Many thanks to Gareth Llewellyn for his help in putting this together. SOA Best Practices Here’s a complete list of the posts in the original 10-part Red Room series: SOA is Dead. Long Live SOA by Sean Boiling Are you doing SOP’s instead of SOA? by Saul Cunningham All The President's SOA by Sean Boiling SOA – Pay Now or Pay Dearly by Richard Ward SOA where are the skills? by Richard Ward Project Management Pitfalls within SOA by Anton Gouws Viewing SOA as a project instead of an architecture by Saul Cunningham Kiss and Tell by Sean Boiling Failure to implement and adhere to SOA Governance by Mervin Chiang Ten Out Of Ten by Sean Boiling Parts 2 of the Red Room Interview will be available next week, followed by Part 3, so stay tuned: RSS Change in the Wind Beginning with next week’s program, the OTN Arch2Arch Podcast will be rechristened as the OTN ArchBeat Podcast, to better align with this blog. The transformation will be painless – you won’t feel a thing. del.icio.us Tags: otn,oracle,Archbeat,Arch2Arch,soa,service oriented architecture, podcast Technorati Tags: otn,oracle,Archbeat,Arch2Arch,soa,service oriented architecture, podcast

• Blank black screen with cursor after login -- RHEL5

- by Sean O.
I have a RHEL 5 machine here which is a Dell Precision T3500. I'm an Ubuntu guy, but I'm having a heck of a time with this machine. After processing its first security update, we cannot log in via the gdm greeter. A new kernel was installed; then I installed the nVidia drivers for our Quadro NVS 295. I know the X configuration is valid because the gdm greeter does display; however, upon login all we can get is a blank, black screen with a cursor. I thought perhaps our python installation was corrupted but a reinstall via yum has not helped. I have searched & googled extensively for a potential fix for this and can find nothing. Below are outputs from uname, a tail of an error in /var/log/messages, and the Xorg.conf. Can anyone suggest a course of action? [sean@cheetah ~]$ uname -a Linux cheetah.*.* 2.6.18-308.8.1.el5 #1 SMP Fri May 4 16:43:02 EDT 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux [sean@cheetah ~]$ sudo tail /var/log/messages Jun 5 15:03:04 cheetah gconfd (sean-4592): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a read-only configuration source at position 2 Jun 5 15:03:05 cheetah hcid[3855]: Default passkey agent (:1.8, /org/bluez/applet) registered Jun 5 15:03:05 cheetah pcscd: winscard.c:304:SCardConnect() Reader E-Gate 0 0 Not Found Jun 5 15:03:05 cheetah last message repeated 2 times Jun 5 15:03:06 cheetah gconfd (sean-4592): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/home/sean/.gconf" to a writable configuration source at position 0 Jun 5 15:03:06 cheetah setroubleshoot: [program.ERROR] exception ImportError: /usr/lib/libatk-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_assertion_message_expr Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/sealert", line 952, in ? from setroubleshoot.gui_utils import * File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/setroubleshoot/gui_utils.py", line 26, in ? import gtk File "/usr/lib64/python2.4/site-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py", line 48, in ? from gtk import _gtk ImportError: /usr/lib/libatk-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_assertion_message_expr Jun 5 15:03:07 cheetah setroubleshoot: [program.ERROR] exception ImportError: /usr/lib/libatk-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_assertion_message_expr Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/sealert", line 952, in ? from setroubleshoot.gui_utils import * File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/setroubleshoot/gui_utils.py", line 26, in ? import gtk File "/usr/lib64/python2.4/site-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py", line 48, in ? from gtk import _gtk ImportError: /usr/lib/libatk-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_assertion_message_expr Jun 5 15:03:08 cheetah pcscd: winscard.c:304:SCardConnect() Reader E-Gate 0 0 Not Found Jun 5 15:07:01 cheetah ntpd[4114]: synchronized to 64.16.211.38, stratum 3 Jun 5 15:07:01 cheetah ntpd[4114]: kernel time sync enabled 0001 [sean@cheetah ~]$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig # nvidia-xconfig: version 295.53 ([email protected]) Sat May 12 00:34:20 PDT 2012 # Xorg configuration created by system-config-display Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "single head configuration" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" EndSection Section "InputDevice" # generated from default Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "auto" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "us" EndSection Section "Monitor" ### Comment all HorizSync and VertSync values to use DDC: ### Comment all HorizSync and VertSync values to use DDC: Identifier "Monitor0" ModelName "LCD Panel 1600x1200" HorizSync 31.5 - 74.7 VertRefresh 56.0 - 65.0 Option "dpms" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "nvidia" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Videocard0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 24 EndSubSection EndSection

• Dell Studio 1737 Overheating

- by Sean
I am using a Dell Studio 1737 laptop. I have been running Linux and have ran Windows recently for a very long time. I upgraded to the 10.10 distribution and since that distro, it seems that for some reason all Linuxes want to push my laptop to extremes. I have recently upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 since I heart that it contains kernel fixes for overheating issues. 12.04 will actually eventually cool the system, but that is after the fans run to the point it sounds like a jet aircraft taking off and the laptop makes my hands sweat. In trying to combat the heat problems I have done the following: I installed the propriatery driver for my ATI Mobility HD 3600. I have tried both the one in the Additional Drivers and also tried ATI's latest greatest version. If I don't install this my laptop will overheat and shut off in minutes. Both seem to perform similarly, but the heat problem remains. I have tried limiting the CPU by installing the CPUFreq Indicator. This does help keep the machine from shutting off, but the heat is still uncomfortable to be around the machine. I usually run in power saver mode or run the cpu at 1.6 GHZ just to error on safety. I ran sensors-detect and here are the results: sean@sean-Studio-1737:~$ sudo sensors-detect # sensors-detect revision 5984 (2011-07-10 21:22:53 +0200) # System: Dell Inc. • OrbitFX: JavaFX 8 3D & NetBeans Platform in Space!

- by Geertjan
Here is a collection of screenshots from a proof of concept tool being developed by Nickolas Sabey and Sean Phillips from a.i. solutions. Before going further, read a great new article here written on java.net by Kevin Farnham, in light of the Duke's Choice Award (DCA) recently received at JavaOne 2013 by the a.i. solutions team. Here's Sean receiving the award on behalf of the a.i. solutions team, surrounded by the DCA selection committee and other officials: They won the DCA for helping facilitate and deploy the 2014 launch of NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale mission, using JDK 7, the NetBeans Platform, and JavaFX to create the GEONS Ground Support System, helping reduce software development time by approximately 35%. The prototype tool that Nicklas and Sean are now working on uses JavaFX 3D with the NetBeans Platform and is nicknamed OrbitFX. Much of the early development is being done to experiment with different patterns, so that accuracy is currently not the goal. For example, you'll notice in the screenshots that the Earth is really close to the Sun, which is obviously not correct. The screenshots are generated using Java 8 build 111, together with NetBeans Platform 7.4. Inspired by various JavaOne demos using JavaFX 3D, Nick began development integrating them into their existing NetBeans Platform infrastructure. The 3D scene showing the Sun and Earth objects is all JavaFX 8 3D, demonstrating the use of Phong Material support, along with multiple light and camera objects. Each JavaFX component extends a JFXPanel type, so that each can easily be added to NetBeans Platform TopComponents. Right-clicking an item in the explorer view offers a context menu that animates and centers the 3D scene on the selected celestial body. With each JavaFX scene component wrapped in a JFXPanel, they can easily be integrated into a NetBeans Platform Visual Library scene. In this case, Nick and Sean are using an instance of their custom Slipstream PinGraphScene, which is an extension of the NetBeans Platform VMDGraphScene. Now, via the NetBeans Platform Visual Library, the OrbitFX celestial body viewer can be used in the same space as a WorldWind viewer, which is provided by a previously developed plugin. "This is a clear demonstration of the power of the NetBeans Platform as an application development framework," says Sean Phillips. "How else could you have so much rich application support placed literally side by side so easily?"

• Podcast Show Notes: The Red Room Interview – Part 2

- by Bob Rhubart
Room bloggers Sean Boiling, Richard Ward, and Mervin Chaing bring their in-the-trenches perspective to the conversation once again in this week’s edition of the OTN ArchBeat Podcast. Listen. (Missed last week? No problemo: Listen to Part 1) In this segment the conversation turns to SOA governance and balancing the need for reuse against the need for speed. It’s no mystery that many people react to the term “SOA Governance” in much the same way as they would to the sound of Darth Vader’s respirator. But Mervin explains how a simple change in terminology can go a long way toward lowering blood pressure. Those interested in connecting with Sean, Richard, or Mervin can do so via the links listed below: Sean Boiling - Sales Consulting Manager for Oracle Fusion Middleware LinkedIn | Twitter | Blog Richard Ward - SOA Channel Development Manager at Oracle LinkedIn | Blog Mervin Chiang - Consulting Principal at Leonardo Consulting LinkedIn | Twitter | Blog And you’ll find the complete list of the Red Room SOA Best Practice Posts in last week’s show notes. The third and final segment of the Red Room series runs next week. I have enough material from the original interview for a fourth program, but it’ll have to wait. Also, as mentioned last week, the podcast name change is now complete, from Arch2Arch, to ArchBeat. As WPBH-TV9 weatherman Phil Connors says, “Anything different is good.” Technorati Tags: archbeat, podcast. arch2arch,soa,soa governance, oracle, otn Flickr Tags: archbeat, podcast. arch2arch,soa,soa governance, oracle, otn

• w2k3 chkdsk errors as vmware 1.8 guest

- by Sean Kirkpatrick
We have two Dell servers (CentOS 5.x) hosting a variety of VMs including 3 W2K3 and 1 W2K servers as guests as well as a handful of other Linux guests. Each Windows VM has 2 drives, C: and D:. on 2 of the W2K3 and the W2K boxes we have recurring errors appearing on a daily basis as reported by CHKDSK. We'll run CHKDSK /f and reboot all affected machines and the errors are reported as fixed. The next day CHKDSK will report the same errors. None of the linux guests nor either host report errors when the are rebooted. The RAID controllers are not reporting errors. We're beginning to think that these are phantom errors somehow, but I'm not willing to go to the bank on that just yet. Anybody have similar experiences or advice? Thanks! Sean

• Change URL of WebBrowser in C#

I am designing a simple application using c# and it has a web browser in it. I need to either (preferably) refresh the page that is currently inside the broswer, or navigate to a "new" url. • XAML ToolTip + IsHitTestVisible="False"

- by Sean
We need to have mouse clicks and drags "ignored" by our View1 but the ToolTip must still function in that view. The reason is View1 is above View2 in Z-Order, so View1 can tint View2 a red color and show a warning via ToolTip; however the ToolTip accompanying View1 will not work if IsHitTestVisible="False". Anyone know a work around so the ToolTip will display on mouse move/over and the rest of mouse events are ignored by View1 and go to View2? Thanks, Sean

• LDAP change user pass on client

- by Sean
I am trying to allow ldap users to change their password on client machines. I have tried pam every which way I can think of /etc/ldap.conf & /etc/pam_ldap.conf, as well. At this point I'm stuck. Client: Ubuntu 11.04 Server: Debian 6.0 The current output is this: sobrien4@T-E700F-1:~$ passwd passwd: Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info passwd: password unchanged /var/log/auth.log gives this during the command: May 9 10:49:06 T-E700F-1 passwd[18515]: pam_unix(passwd:chauthtok): user "sobrien4" does not exist in /etc/passwd May 9 10:49:06 T-E700F-1 passwd[18515]: pam_ldap: ldap_simple_bind Can't contact LDAP server May 9 10:49:06 T-E700F-1 passwd[18515]: pam_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP server... May 9 10:49:06 T-E700F-1 passwd[18515]: pam_ldap: ldap_simple_bind Can't contact LDAP server getent passwd |grep sobrien4 (note keeping short since testing with that account, however it outputs all ldap users): sobrien4:Ffm1oHzwnLz0U:10000:12001:Sean O'Brien:/home/sobrien4:/bin/bash getent group shows all ldap groups. /etc/pam.d/common-password (Note this is just the most current, I have tried a lot of different options): password required pam_cracklib.so retry=3 minlen=8 difok=3 password [success=1 default=ignore] pam_unix.so use_authtok md5 password required pam_ldap.so use_authtok password required pam_permit.so Popped open wireshark as well, the server & client are talking. I have the password changing working on the server. I.E. the server that runs slapd, I can log in with the ldap user and change the passwords. I tried copying the working configs from the server initially and no dice. I also tried cloning it, and just changing ip & host, and no go. My guess is that the client is not authorized by ip or hostname to change a pass. Pertaining to the slapd conf, I saw this in a guide and tried it: access to attrs=loginShell, gecos by dn="cn=admin,dc=cengineering,dc=etb" write by self write by * read access to * by dn="cn=admin,dc=cengineering,dc=etb" write by self write by * read So ldap seems to be working okay, just can't change the password.

• Editor's Notebook: Of Slobber Pots and Flux Capacitors

- by user462779
Just wrapping up the contents of the November 2012 issue of Profit... I found this snippet of an interview I did with Team Oracle mechanics Clyde Greene and Chad Colberg when I was in Gary, IN this summer working on a photo shoot about Team Oracle for the current issue. We were standing around in a hangar as the Team prepared for the Chicago Air and Water Show, chatting about the engineering and design of the Oracle Challenger III aerobatic plane. Pick up a copy of Profit's November 2012 and read what Team Oracle pilot Sean D. Tucker has to say about the Oracle Challenger III and get a closer look at the plane. I'll drop a link into this blog entry as soon as the story is available. Your editor, greasy and stooped after a red eye flight, talks with Sean D. Tucker about stunt flying.

• check if(country == @"(null)" doesn't work

- by Sean
hi all, I got the problem that the if-statement doesn't work. After the first code line the variable contains the value "(null)", because the user who picked the contact from his iphone address book doesn't set the country key for this contact, so far so good. but if I check the variable, it won't be true, but the value is certainly "(null)"... does someone have an idea? NSString *country = [NSString [the dict objectForKey:(NSString *)kABPersonAddressCountryKey]]; if(country == @"(null)") { country = @""; } thanks in advance sean

• [.NET] How to load multiple mscorlib.dll and call their inner functions seperately?

- by Sean
Dears, This is for research purpose. I have .Net framework 2.0 installed, and I want to load mscorlib.dll 1.1 dynamiclly to execute its specific inner function. When I wrote this code in C#: static void Main(string[] args) { Assembly assem = Assembly.LoadFrom("C:\\mscorlib_my_private_1.1.dll"); System.Type type = assem.GetType("System.Console"); Type[] typeArray =new Type[1]; typeArray.SetValue(typeof(string),0); System.Reflection.MethodInfo info = type.GetMethod("WriteLine", typeArray); object[] param = new object[1]; param[0] = assem.FullName; type.InvokeMember("WriteLine", System.Reflection.BindingFlags.InvokeMethod, System.Type.DefaultBinder, "", param); } The output is "mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089" Not the expected 1.1 version. After Googling a lot, I know that mscorlib.dll is very special, but is it impossible? Cheers~ Sean

• Dialog, LinearLayout, ScrollView size issues

- by Sean
I'm building a dialog class which inherits from Dialog, and all internal UI is programmatic. It's structured in the following way: Dialog +LinearLayout ++TextView ++ScrollView +++LinearLayout ++++ListView Unfortunately, when I show() the Dialog, it's too short. I'd like it to maximize and cover as much of the screen as possible, but only when there are enough items in the ListView to warrant it. I haven't found my answer in the docs, and I haven't been able to get it to work by setting WRAP_CONTENT as layout parameters, or setting heights manually. What is the proper way to approach this? Thanks, Sean
