  • Deluge through a socks proxy server

    - by tapan
To use deluge I use a socks proxy server. Everything was working perfectly till now. I use the following code to create the socks server: ssh -D 1080 user@remote-server In the proxy settings of Deluge I put the host as 127.0.0.1 and port as 1080 and use socks v4 (for some reason it didn't work with socks v5). This setup was working perfectly till now. Now suddenly I cannot download any torrents. The error I get is connection timed out. I checked the remote server and it seems it is not even being used. What can the error be ?

  • setting up a proxy to mirror an SSH SOCKS connection

    - by aresnick
I have two remote machines, remote1 and remote2. remote2 is only running sshd, and I can't run anything else on it. remote1 is a full-fledged server to which I have complete access. I can run a SOCKS proxy on remote2 via ssh -f -N -D *:8080 me@remote2 which lets me expose a SOCKS proxy on port 8080 on remote1. I'd like to authenticate this so that the proxy isn't sitting open. How can I do this? It seems like I should be able to use delegate, but I can't even seem to get its HTTP proxy functionality working. When I run delegated -r -P8081 SERVER=http PERMIT="*:*:*" REMITTABLE="*" I can't even get it to work on port 8081. Anyway, I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to let me authenticate access to the SOCKS proxy connection? That is, I want to be able to point my browser's proxy at remote1 and browse the internet through the SSH SOCKS proxy/tunnel to remote2. squid doesn't support a SOCKS parent =( Thanks!

  • SSH Socks Proxy wiith iptables REDIRECT

    - by Radium
I have googled and haven`t found the answer on my question. Help me please. There are two servers: serverA with public IP 12.0.0.10 and an private IP 10.0.0.5 serverB with public IP 20.0.0.11 I have setup SOCKS proxy on serverB to serverA: ssh -D20.0.0.11:2222 [email protected] So when on my local machine in a browser i specify SOCKS proxy 20.0.0.11:2222 (serverB:2222) as external IP while browsing i get 12.0.0.10 (serverA IP). That is ok. As well if i go onto http://10.0.0.5 (serverA private IP) it is also reachable. That is what i need. I want to make servers A private IP to be available through servers B public IP on certain ports but without specifying SOCKS in my browser. I could use ssh port forward but the problem is - i need to forward many ports and do not know which exactly - i know only the range. So when i connect to 20.0.0.11 to any port , for example, from 3000:4000 range, i want that traffic to be redirected to 10.0.0.5 on the same port. That is why i`ve decided maybe SOCKS proxy via SSH and iptables REDIRECT could help me. Client - serverBPublicIP (any port from range 3000:4000) - serverAPublicIP - serverAPrivateIP (the port was requested on serverBPublicIP) On serverB i do: ssh -D20.0.0.11:2222 [email protected] iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -d 20.0.0.11 -p tcp --dport 3000:4000 -j REDIRECT --to-port 2222 But that does not work - when i telnet on 20.0.0.11:3001 for example i do not see any proxied traffic on the serverA. What should i do else? I have tried tcpsocks like this (in example i am telneting to 20.0.0.11:3001) Client -> 20.0.0.11:3001 -> iptables REDIRECT from 3001 --to-port 1111 -> tcpsocks from 1111 to 2222 -> SOCKS proxy from serverB to serverA on port 2222 -> serverA But i do not know what to do with the traffic on serverA. How to route it to its private IP. Help me please. I know, VPN removes all the hell i am trying to create, but i have no ability to use tun/tap device. It is disabled.

How do I configure a SOCKS proxy on a Debian box such that I can enter the host address in the firefox proxy configuration page, and use my box as a SOCKS proxy? I've heard of dante-server, but I don't know how to make it allow connections from and to everywhere.

  • Dante (SOCKS server) not working

    - by gregmac
I'm trying to set up a SOCKS proxy using dante for testing purposes. However, I can't even get it to work with a web browser, after looking at several tutorials on how to do that. I've tried in both IE and Firefox, in both cases, using "Manual proxy configuration", leave everything blank except for SOCKS host, and then put in the IP of my proxy and the port number (1080). I just get "Server not found" / "Problems loading this page" and don't see anything in danted, even running in debug mode. If I do a "telnet 10.0.0.40 1080" I do see the connection open in danted debug output, so I know that much is working. Here's my config: logoutput: stdout /var/log/danted/danted.log internal: eth0 port = 1080 external: eth0 method: username none #rfc931 user.privileged: proxy user.notprivileged: nobody user.libwrap: nobody connecttimeout: 30 # on a lan, this should be enough if method is "none". client pass { from: 10.0.0.0/8 port 1-65535 to: 0.0.0.0/0 } client pass { from: 127.0.0.0/8 port 1-65535 to: 0.0.0.0/0 } client block { from: 0.0.0.0/0 to: 0.0.0.0/0 log: connect error } block { from: 0.0.0.0/0 to: 127.0.0.0/8 log: connect error } pass { from: 10.0.0.0/8 to: 0.0.0.0/0 protocol: tcp udp } pass { from: 127.0.0.0/8 to: 0.0.0.0/0 protocol: tcp udp } block { from: 0.0.0.0/0 to: 0.0.0.0/0 log: connect error } I'm sure I'm probably missing something simple, but I'm lost. I haven't even thought about SOCKS since the late 90's.

  • Tunneling HTTPS traffic via a PUTTY/SSL tunnel with SOCKS

    - by ripper234
I have configured a SOCKS ssh tunnel to a remote proxy, and set my Firefox to use localhost:<port> as a SOCKS proxy. My intention is to tunnel outgoing HTTP/S connections from my machine via a specific 3rd party server I own (on AWS). In my testing, HTTP UTLs are forwarded properly (e.g. when I access http://jsonip.com/ from my computer I do get the server's IP) However, whenever I try to reach an HTTPS address, I get this error: The proxy server is refusing connections How do I debug/fix it? My PUTTY tunnel config is simply (some random source port number + dynamic checked): P.S. I'm aware I might need to manually accept SSL certificates. The reason I'm doing this is to resolve problems using gmail as an outbound SMTP service.

  • Why are my socks proxies slow

    - by vps_newcomer
I have a linux vps, and i have tried a few socks proxy setups to test their performance: All tests were using speedtest.net The standard ssh tunnel proxy 0.8mbit/s download and 0.1-0.2mbit/s upload speeds dante-server proxy 1.3mbit/s download and 0.4-0.5mbit/s upload I am wondering why are these speeds so slow? Is anything shaping them? Is it just the nature of socks proxies? I know that the ssh tunnel has to do encryption and what not so that is why its slow, but i was surprised to see that the second setup was also quite slow. On the VPS i have received download speeds of 25MB/s per second (thats about 200mbit/s and upload speed of atleast 5MB/s (haven't got a good enough pipe to test anything faster). The other option i was going to try is to setup OpenVPN and see how that goes, however i need to find a good tutorial as it's fairly complicated to setup. So why is it so slow? How can i test to see where the bottleneck is? How can i make it faster :D

  • Connecting jconsole using SOCKS to Amazon EC2

    - by freshfunk
I'm trying to use jconsole to view stats on an EC2 instance by using a socks proxy created by SSH. I've tried the various scripts mentioned in the links below but to no avail: http://simplygenius.com/2010/08/jconsole-via-socks-ssh-tunnel.html http://gabrielcain.com/blog/2010/11/02/using-ssh-proxying-to-connect-jconsole-to-remote-cassandra-instances/ I'm running ssh -f -ND 8123 myuser@mymachine and verified that at least Firefox goes through it as a proxy. I then run jconsole -J-DsocksProxyHost=localhost -J-DsocksProxyPort=8123 service:jmx:rmi:///jndi/rmi://ec2-XX-XX-XXX-XXX.compute-1.amazonaws.com:8080/jmxrmi I run netstat -n on my EC2 instance and I see a connection created by my machine. However, the connection eventually disappears and I get a 'channel 2: open failed: connect failed: Operation timed out' from my ssh tunnel. I've opened the jmx port through the security group and I've checked the port on the EC2 instance to make sure it's open (by telnet-ing to it). I'm not sure where to look next. Are there some properties in sshd_config or ssh_config I need to enable for tunneling? Or anything in Mac OS X? I feel like a serious noob but sys administration is really not my strong point. I've spent several hours and can't get this to work.

  • port forwarding with socks over proxy

    - by Oz123
I am trying to browse a wiki that runs on a server inside one domain from another domain. The wiki is accessible only on the LAN, but I need to browse it from another LAN to which I connect with an SSH tunnel ... Here is my setup and the steps I did so far: ~.ssh/confing on wikihost: Host gateway User kisteuser Port 443 Hostname gateway.companydomain.com ProxyCommand /home/myuser/bin/ssh-https-tunnel %h %p # ssh-https-tunnel: # http://ttcplinux.sourceforge.net/tools/stunnel Protocol 2 IdentityFile ~/.ssh/key_dsa LocalForward 11069 localhost:11069 Host server1 User kisteuser Hostname localhost Port 11069 LocalForward 8022 server1:22 LocalForward 17001 server1:7100 LocalForward 8080 www-proxy:3128 RemoteForward 11069 localhost:22 from wikihost myuser@wikihost: ssh -XC -t gateway.companydomain.com ssh -L11069:localhost:22 server1 on another terminal: ssh gateway.companydomain.com Now, on my companydomain I would like to start firefox and browse the wiki on wikihost. I did: [email protected] ~ $ ssh gateway Have a lot of fun... kisteuser@gateway ~ $ ssh -D 8383 localhost user@localhost's password: user@wikiserver:~> My .ssh/config on that side looks like that: host server1 localforward 11069 localhost:11069 host localhost user myuser port 11069 host wikiserver forwardagent yes user myuser port 11069 hostname localhost Now, I started firefox on the server called gateway, and edited the proxy settings to use SOCKSv5, specifying that the proxy should be gateway and use the port 8383... kisteuser@gateway ~ $ LANG=C firefox -P --no-remote And, now I get the following error popping in the Terminal of wikiserver: myuser@wikiserver:~> channel 3: open failed: connect failed: Connection refused channel 3: open failed: connect failed: Connection refused channel 3: open failed: connect failed: Connection refused Confused? Me too ... Please help me understand how to properly build the tunnels and browse the wiki over SOCKS protocol. update: I managed to browse the wiki on wikiserver with the following changes: host wikiserver forwardagent yes user myuser port 11069 hostname localhost localforward 8339 localhost:8443 Now when I ssh gateway I launch Firefox and go to localhost:8339 and I hit the start page of the wiki, which is served on Port 8443. Now I ask myself is SOCKS really needed? Can someone elaborate on that ?

  • Remote Desktop over SSH SOCKS proxy to bypass firewall

    - by scrumpyjack
Hi folks, I'm trying to connect to a Windows server from my Mac using RDC2.1 for Mac. The problem is the server I need to connect to is guarded by the evil dragon - IP-based access control on a completely separate network. I have an IP I can get in on, but it's at my office (i.e. a completely separate network). Because that network isn't set up for VPN, I've set up a SOCKS proxy through an SSH tunnel (which is all working fine). (SSH proxy) Me (on my Mac) ----------> Office Linux box ----> Windows server (home network) (office network) (other network) From my Linux server in my office (the SSH server) I can telnet to port 3389 on the Windows server, no problem. But from my Mac I can't get so much as a squeak out of it. Any ideas?

  • java runtime 6 with socks v5 proxy - Possible?

    - by rwired
I have written an application that (amongst other things) runs a local service in windows that acts as a SOCKS v5 proxy for Firefox. I'm in the debugging phase right now and have found certain websites that don't work correctly. For example the Java Applet for Picture Uploading on Facebook.com fails because is is unable to lookup domains. My app overrides a hidden FF config setting network.proxy.socks__remote__dns setting it to true. The whole purpose of the app is to allow access to websites when behind a firewall (e.g. if the user is in China), so this setting is essential to ensure domains are resolved remotely also (and not just HTTP requests). In the JRE6 settings (documented here) there isn't an equivalent setting, and since remote DNS resolution is a feature of SOCKS v5 and not v4 as the documentation seems to imply I'm worried that it's just not possible. How can I programmatically make sure the JRE uses a SOCKS v5 proxy for all requests (including DNS)? UPDATE: Steps to reproduce this problem: Make sure you are behind a firewall that blocks (or redirects) internet access including DNS Install PuTTY and add a dynamic SSH tunnel on some port number of your choice (e.g. 9870). Then login to a remote server that has full access to the internet Launch Firefox and you will not be able to browse the web In FF network settings set the SOCKS v5 proxy to localhost:9870 In FF go to about:config, change network.proxy.socks__remote__dns to true You will now be able to browse the web. Go to facebook.com, login, go to your profile and attempt to use the picture uploader java applet to add some pictures It will fail with a series of class not found errors looking similar to: load: class com.facebook.facebookphotouploader5.FacebookPhotoUploader5.class not found. I believe this is failing because the JRE is unable to resolve the domain that the class resides on. I'm basing this belief on the fact that the documentation (http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/guides/deployment/deployment-guide/properties.html) talks only about SOCKS v4 (which as far as I know does not support remote DNS). My deployment.properties file is located in %APPDATA%\Sun\Java\Deployment. I can confirm that modifications I make in the Java Control Panel get written into that file. If instead of "Use browser setting" the network settings for Java I override and attempt to use the SOCKS proxy settings manually, I still have the issue. There does not seem to be an easy way to force the JRE to do DNS remotely through the Proxy. UPDATE 2: Without the SOCKS proxy, from my local client www.facebook.com resolves to 203.161.230.171 upload.facebook.com resolves to 64.33.88.161 Neither host is reachable (because of the firewall) If I login to the remote server, I get: www.facebook.com 69.63.187.17 upload.facebook.com 69.63.178.32 Both these IPs change after a few minutes, as it seems Facebook uses round-robin DNS and other load-balancing. With the Proxy settings set in Firefox, I can navigate to www.facebook.com without any difficulty (since DNS is being resolved remotely on the Proxy). Whey I go to the page with the Java applet it fails with the stacktrace messages I've already reported. However if I edit Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts, adding the correct IP for upload.facebook.com I can get the applet to load and work correctly (restart of FF is sometimes necessary). This evidence seems to support my theory that the Java Runtime is not resolving DNS on the Proxy, but instead just routing traffic though it. My application is for mass-deployment, and needs to work with java applets on other sites (not just facebook). I really need a work-around for this problem. UPDATE 3 Stacktrace dump a requested by ZZ Coder: load: class com.facebook.facebookphotouploader5.FacebookPhotoUploader5.class not found. java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.facebook.facebookphotouploader5.FacebookPhotoUploader5.class at sun.plugin2.applet.Applet2ClassLoader.findClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2ClassLoader.loadCode(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager.createApplet(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager$AppletExecutionRunnable.run(Unknown Source) at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source) Caused by: java.net.SocketException: Connection reset at java.net.SocketInputStream.read(Unknown Source) at java.io.BufferedInputStream.fill(Unknown Source) at java.io.BufferedInputStream.read1(Unknown Source) at java.io.BufferedInputStream.read(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.http.HttpClient.parseHTTPHeader(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.http.HttpClient.parseHTTP(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.http.HttpClient.parseHTTP(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.getInputStream(Unknown Source) at java.net.HttpURLConnection.getResponseCode(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Applet2ClassLoader.getBytes(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Applet2ClassLoader.access$000(Unknown Source) at sun.plugin2.applet.Applet2ClassLoader$1.run(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) ... 7 more Exception: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.facebook.facebookphotouploader5.FacebookPhotoUploader5.class Dumping class loader cache... • Quick change of SSH tunnel port forwarding options for SOCKS proxy

    - by user1335897
The goal is to have access to internet thru SSH tunneling to SOCKS proxy. Me - ssh-on-my-vps - SOCKS proxy - internet Thing is I want to be able to quickly change the SOCKS proxy in this chain. If I use port forwarding on ssh, I assume I have to re-establish SSH tunnel with new SOCKS proxy address in parameters whenever I want to change proxy. Is that right? If it is, then I probably should always point SSH tunnel to localhost listening proxy server which will send requests to specified SOCKS proxy. So what local proxy I should choose that allows to easily change the destination SOCKS proxy via maybe reading from local file where I would put the SOCKS proxy address or via specifying new SOCKS address in its web-admin page?

  • SSH socks proxy tunnel without interactive session?

    - by dirtside
I use ssh -D 1080 myhost.org ...to open up an SSH tunnel from my work machine to my home machine, so as to bypass the idiotic content filter on the corporate firewall. However this also creates an interactive SSH session that lives the whole time I'm using the tunnel. Is there any way to tell SSH just to create the tunnel and not bother with the interactive session?

  • Create a SOCKS Proxy that does nothing special

    - by rwired
I am trying to create a SOCKS proxy in C++ that runs as a background process on localhost. If the user's browser is configured to use the proxy, I want all HTTP requests to be passed along through the normal TCP/IP stack. i.e. The browser will behave exactly as it normally would. Eventually I will add another layer which will check to see if the requested resource matches certain criteria, and if so will handle the request differently. But for now I'm just trying to solve the basic problem... how to create a SOCKS proxy that doesn't change anything?

  • Multiple connections in a single SSH SOCKS 5 Proxy

    - by Elie Zedeck
Hey guys, My fist question here on Stackoverflow: What should I need to do so that the SSH SOCKS 5 Proxy (SSH2) will allow multiple connections? What I have noticed, is that when I load a page in Firefox (already configured to use the SOCKS 5 proxy), it loads everything one by one. It can be perceived by bare eyes, and I also confirm that through the use of Firebug's NET tab, which logs the connections that have been made. I have already configure some of the directives in the about:config page, like pipeline, persistent proxy connections, and a few other things. But I still get this kind of sequential load of resources, which is noticeably very slow. network.http.pipelining;true network.http.pipelining.maxrequests;8 network.http.pipelining.ssl;true network.http.proxy.pipelining;true network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy;100 network.proxy.socks_remote_dns;true My ISP sucks because during the day, it intentionally breaks connections on a random basis. And so, it is impossible to actually accomplish meaningful works without the need of a lot of browser refresh or hitting F5 key. So, that is why I started to find solutions to this. The SSH's dynamic port forwarding is the best solution I find to date, because it has some pretty good compression which saves a lot of useless traffic, and is also secure. The only thing remaining is to get it to have multiple connections running in it. Thanks for all the inputs.

  • Java Socks Proxy Socket Error

    - by Ionut Ungureanu
I am trying to create a http request through a SOCKS (v4 / v5) proxy in Java. After reading about socks communication protocol on WikiPedia, I have put togheter this piece of code: Socket sock = new Socket(); InetSocketAddress remoteProxyAddress = new InetSocketAddress(proxy ip, proxy port); sock.connect(remoteProxyAddress, connTimeout); InputStream in = sock.getInputStream(); OutputStream out = sock.getOutputStream(); out.write(0x04); out.write(0x01); out.write((endpoint.getPort() >> 8) & 0xff); out.write((endpoint.getPort() >> 0) & 0xff); out.write(endpoint.getAddress().getAddress()); out.write(0x0); out.flush(); And here comes the part where I read from the proxy server. The problem is that the response is always "-1". I have tried the proxy on Firefox and it works perfect. So... the problem is in my app. Can anyone help me? Thanks!
