    - by ETC
Android phone owners rocking the official Google Reader app will be pleased to see the new update includes much requested features such as polished feed widgets, unread counter widgets, and a handy “mark previous as read” button. Widgets have long been one of the most requested feature for Google Reader for Android. This update rolls them out in two forms. News ticker widgets show you current headlines for your Google Reader folders (as seen in the screenshot here); folder widgets function just as unread counters and only take up a 1×1 space. In addition to the widgets another much requested feature made an appearance. While scrolling through your feed you can now mark all the previous entries as read. • Enhance GIMP’s Image Editing Power with Gimp Paint Studio

    - by Asian Angel
Does your GIMP installation need a little super-charging? Using Gimp Paint Studio you can add a wonderful set of brushes, tools, and more to GIMP and take your work up to the next level. For our example we chose to install the beta version of Gimp Paint Studio on Ubuntu 10.10. Once you download the .zip file and unzip it, all that you need to do is manually transfer the contents shown here to the appropriate GIMP folders on your system. You can see the location of the destination folders here on our system… Note: Make certain to make a back-up copy of the “sessionrc and toolrc files” before you transfer Gimp Paint Studio into your installation (in case you would like to or need to revert back to the originals later). When you finish transferring the files start GIMP up and get ready to have fun. And if your experience is like ours then you should see a noticeable difference in window size and arrangement from the default settings. Here are some samples of the exceptional artwork done by Ramon Miranda and Mozart Couto using Gimp Paint Studio. Really impressive! Artwork by Ramon Miranda & Mozart Couto. Watch the introduction video and see Gimp Paint Studio in action. • How Star Wars Changed the World [Infographic]

    - by ETC
The Star Wars film franchise has had an enormous impact on the world of film, gaming, and special effects. Check out this interesting infographic to see how Star Wars has impacted the world. Created by Michelle Devereau, the “How Star Wars Changed the World” infographic is a massive under taking of charting and cross-referencing. It does an excellent job highlighting the impact the Star Wars films have had on film, television, gaming, and the surrounding technologies. At minimum you’ll nail down some new trivia (I learned, for example, that famed puppeteer and voice actor Frank Oz was the man behind Yoda), even better you’ll have an appreciate for what a sweeping effect Star Wars has had. - by Asian Angel
Recently we showed you how to enhance GIMP’s image editing power and today we help you super-charge GIMP even more. G’MIC (GREYC’s Magic Image Converter) will add an impressive array of filters and effects to your GIMP installation for image editing goodness. Note: We applied the Contrast Swiss Mask filter to the image shown in the screenshot above to create a nice, warm sunset effect. • Etch a Circuit Board using a Simple Homemade Mixture

    - by ETC
If you’ve been dabbling in DIY electronics projects but you’re not so excited about keeping strong acids around to etch your circuit boards, this simple DIY recipe uses common household chemicals in lieu of strong acid. Electronics hobbyist Stephen Hobley wanted to see if he could create an etching solution that wasn’t as dangerous and noxious smelling at traditional muriatic acid solutions. By combining regular white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and table salt, he created a homemade etching solution from ingredients safe enough to store in your pantry. The only downside to his recipe is that, compared to traditional etching solutions, the process takes a little bit longer so you’ll have to leave your board in the solution longer. Not a bad trade off for the ability to skip using any oops-I-burned-my-skin-off acids. Check out the process in the video below: Hit up the link below for more information and and interesting explanation of the chemical process (he talks about not quite understanding it in the video but two chemists write in and give him the full run down). • Sync Blocker Stops iTunes from Automatically Syncing

If you’re looking to put a end to iTunes overly aggressive syncing, Sync Blocker is a free application that puts an end to automatic iTunes synchronization and keeps your iPad, iPhone, iPod, and iPod Touch data from being accidentally deleted. There are settings within iTunes you can toggle and even keyboard shortcuts you can use to temporarily suspend the syncing while mounting your iOS device. If you want to skip that hassle, however, and rest easy knowing that your iOS device will only be synced and updated when you give an explicit go ahead, Sync Blocker is a free application for both Windows and Mac OS X machines that completely blocks iTunes from syncing without your permission. • Comix is an Awesome Comics Archive Viewer for Linux

    - by Asian Angel
Do you have a terrific collection of comics in electronic form but need a great app to view them with? If you have a Linux system then we have the perfect app for you…Comix, the open source comic reading powerhouse. For our example we installed Comix on our Ubuntu 10.10 system. Just go to the Ubuntu Software Center and conduct a quick search. When you go to install Comix in the Ubuntu Software Center, make sure to scroll all the way to the bottom and select Unarchiver for .rar files. The listing appears as a “non-free version” for some reason, but displays as free once selected. Odd, but nothing to worry about in the end… Once Comix is installed you can find it in the Graphics Section of the Ubuntu Menu. Comix also comes with a nice set of options to let you customize the app to best suit those important comic reading needs. • Dim an Overly Bright Alarm Clock with a Binder Divider

    - by ETC
Love your alarm clock but hate how eye-searingly bright it is? Slice up a plastic binder divider to dim your alarm clock (or any other aggressively bright monochromatic display). At DIY site Curbly Chris Job shares a simple alarm clock hack. For years he had an alarm clock with a nice dim display. When it broke he went in search of a replacement but failed to find one that wasn’t . His solution came in form of a sliced up binder divider (the clear, usually tinted, plastic tabs you put in between paper in a binder). He sliced to fit the display, spritzed it with a little water to help it cling to the plastic, and pressed it in place. The plastic dims the display enough–as seen in the before/after picture above–that he doesn’t need to cover it up to get a good night’s sleep. Our friends over at MakeUseOf.com have released yet another eBook in their series of Guides to, well, just about everything. This one gives you some tips for speeding up your Windows PC. The guide has a ton of different tips, and while I wouldn’t necessarily say you follow every single tip to the letter (since everybody’s setup is different), it does give you lots of great ideas for speeding up your PC, as well as links to resources, and instructions for how to perform various cleanup tasks. The best tips? Make sure to keep your PC crapware-free, upgrade your RAM if you’re low, scan for viruses, and run some type of disk cleanup on a regular basis. • Remastered King’s Quest Games Offer Classic Gaming on Modern Machines

    - by ETC
If you were a fan of the King’s Quest series of adventure games from the 1980s and 1990s, you’ll be thrilled to see them remastered with enhanced graphics, polished voice acting, and more. Gaming studio AGD Interactive has been engaged in a multi-year project to remaster and freely release the classic King’s Quest games. They started with King’s Quest I in 2001, moved on to King’s Quest II, and just recently released King’s Quest III (see in the screenshot above). The gameplay for all three games is excellent and really captures the feel of the original games (with better graphics, quality voice acting, and adjustments made for modern computers). When you run the game you first get a small pre-launch console. There you can make adjusts to the game before launching it. We’d recommend you enable the pixel doubling filter. It make the game a little blockier (hey you are playing a 1980s remake!) but it fills up high resolution monitors more effectively. Hit up the link below to download King’s Quest Redux I-III free of charge for both Windows and Mac computers.
