• Scheduled Task to show console window when logged on but still run when not logged on

  Is it possible (and if so, how) to set up a task (console application) in Server 2008 so that it'll run both when a user is logged in and when no user is logged in, AND - if the user is logged in (either local or via RDP) - have the console appear on the screen while the program is running? Ie. the program should run under the defined user context and it writes status messages to stdout, which goes to a standard console window. This console window is either shown (if the defined user is currently logged in locally or via RDP), or not shown (but the application is still run). I have access to the source of the console application, so if it needs some additional code (like specifically opening up a new console window or what have you), then that's not a problem. At the moment, I can set up the task as "Run only when user is logged on" which will run the application when the user is logged on (local or RDP) and I can then see the status messages, or I can set it up as "Run whether user is logged or not" and no status output is visible - not even if the user is logged on.

• Run script when shutting down ubuntu before the logged in user is logged out

  I'm writing a script to backup some local directories on a unix machine (Ubuntu) to a samba drive. The script works fine and I've got it running at shutdown and restart using the method described at http://en.kioskea.net/faq/3348-ubuntu-executing-a-script-at-startup-and-shutdown It works by placing the backup script into the /etc/rc6.d and /etc/rc0.d directories. However there is a problem. After looking at the scripts logfile it seems to be run after the user is logged out. We are using LDAP authentication and when the user logs out, the system cannot backup to their samba share. Does anyone know of anyway to run the script before the user is logged out?

• Windows memory logged on vs logged off

  Let's say I power on my fresh installed Windows 7 x64 machine. After Windows boots up, there are a bunch of services being started in the background that start allocating memory. Then I enter my user/pass and Windows logs me in. Let's supose I don't do anythig else (I don't explicitely start any application) and I don't have any other app installed by me. So it's fresh install of my machine. My question is: how much memory is needed for all the UI & other stuff? Is it a good indicator to look into task manager and check all the processes started under my user name and sum up all the memory consumed by those processes to get the total amount of memory I am consuming just to stay logged on? Basically this is my question: how much memory is needed just to stay logged on? Now, if log off would all the memory be released back to the system so that the background services can benefit of? Also, I assume that there might be a different discussion for each Windows flavors (?)

• When Logged out, one blog shows - logged in, all blogs show

  I've coded this Wordpress site but I'm finding difficulties with the blog area. Only one blog shows in the blog section but with I am logged in as an admin, I can see all the blogs on the page. I need it to show for everyone, whether they are logged in as a user or just a visitor to the website. I have attempted to see if it was a wordpress issue by checking the 'Settings Reading' settings and they are set just fine, showing to be 10 posts per page.. It could be something wrong with the loop. • Bash script won't stay open in background after running through while

  I can't get the following bash script to stay open after the first message is received from NC: #!/bin/bash port=3333 nc -l $port | while read msg; do notify-send Alert "$msg"; done After the first message it exits. I want it to stay open and continue monitoring for new messages from NC. I know that if I launch nc -l port without the while loop it stays open and I can chat away between the two connections even disconnect from the connected host. I am sending the message using: echo 'done' | nc IP port

• Cron won't execute if am not logged in

• Stay on Schedule in Chrome with DayHiker

  Do you keep your schedule and tasks in Google Calendar?  Here’s a handy extension for Google Chrome that can keep you on top of your appointments without having to open Google Calendar in another tab. Integrate Google Calendar with Chrome DayHiker is a handy extension for Google Chrome that can help you stay on schedule in your browser.  Desktop applications typically can keep you notified easier with popups or alerts, but webapps require you to visit them to view your information.  DayHiker takes the best of both, and can make your Google Calendar work more like a desktop application. To get started, open the DayHiker page from the Chrome Extensions Gallery (link below), and click Install.  Confirm you wish to install it at the prompt. Now you’ll have a new extension button in your Chrome toolbar.  Click the calendar icon to view your Google Calendar.  You’ll need to be signed into your Google account for your calendar to display; click the key icon to select your account if it doesn’t show your appointments automatically. If you’re signed into multiple Google accounts, such as your public Gmail and a Google Apps account, you can select the calendar you wish and click Continue. Now you can quickly see your upcoming appointments.  Simply hover over the icon to see your upcoming events.  Or, just glance at it to see if there are any appointments coming up, as the indicator icon will change colors to show how long you have until your next appointment. Click the icon to see more information about your appointments. Or, click the Add link to add a new appointment.  If you need to edit the appointment details, click Edit Details and the appointment will open in Google Calendar for you to edit. You can also view and manage your tasks in Google Calendar.  Click the checkmark icon, and then add or check-off tasks directly from the extension pane. You can also set an alarm clock in DayHiker.  Click the green circle icon, and then enter the time for the alarm to go off.  Strangely it will only chime if the extension pane is left open, so if you click anywhere else in the browser or even switch to another program it will not chime.   If you’d like to customize DayHiker’s settings, right-click on it and select Options, or select Options in the Chrome Extensions page.  Here you can customize your badges and the DayHiker icon, or enter a custom domain for your Google Apps Pro calendar.   Conclusion If you rely on Google Calendar to stay on top of your schedule, DayHiker can help you stay scheduled and know what’s coming up.  We wish DayHiker supported multiple calendars so we could combine our Google Apps calendars with our personal Google Calendar, but even still, it is a very useful tool.  Whether you’re a tightly scheduled person or just like to jot down to-dos and keep track of them, this extension will help you do this efficiently with familiar Google tools. • disable shutdown/suspend if there is other user logged in via ssh

  I remember that in versions of ubuntu around 9.04 was possible to disable user to shutdown ( and maybe suspend too ) system if there was other user logged in.Something like policykit or similar. Is it possible to do in 11.04 ? Thanks edit: if someone needs ( for own risk ), little change in /usr/lib/pm-utils/bin/pm-action will allow user to suspend machine if he is only user logged in or when user will run sudo pm-suspend. • Windows GUI application when user is not logged in?

  I've written a Autoit script that starts a GUI application, when the application starts there is a login form. The scripts fills the login form and tries to log in. Then it records the time it took to login to the application and shuts the application down afterwards, writes a output file with the time it took. The thing is, I can't get the application to start unless Im logged in as the user the Scheduled task is running on. So my question is: Is there any way to start a GUI application even though the user isn't logged in? Or is the only way to have a user always logged in?

• Unity DontDestroyOnLoad causing scenes to stay open

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/jkrebsbach/archive/2014/08/11/unity-dontdestroyonload-causing-scenes-to-stay-open.aspxMy Unity project has a class (ClientSettings) where most of the game state & management properties are stored.  Among these are some utility functions that derive from MonoBehavior.  However, between every scene this object was getting recreated and I was losing all sorts of useful data.  I learned that with DontDestroyOnLoad, I can persist this entity between scenes.  Super.Persisting information between scenesThe problem with adding DontDestroyOnLoad to my "ClientSettings" was suddenly my previous scene would stay alive, and continue to execute its update routines.  An important part of the documentation helps shed light to my issues:"If the object is a component or game object then its entire transform hierarchy will not be destroyed either."My ClientSettings script was attached to the main camera on my first scene.  Because of this, the Main Camera was part of the hierarchy of the component, and therefore was also not able to destroy when switching scenes.  Now the first scene's main camera Update routine continues to execute after the second scene is running - causing me to have some very nasty bugs.Suddenly I wasn't sure how I should be creating a persistent entity - so I created a new sandbox project and tested different approaches until I found one that works:In the main scene: Create an empty Game Object:  "GameManager" - and attach the ClientSettings script to this game object.  Set any properties to the clientsettings script as appropriate.Create a prefab, using the GameManager.Remove the Game Object from the main scene.In the Main Camera, I created a script:  Main Script.  This is my primary script for the main scene.<code> public GameObject[] prefabs; private ClientSettings _clientSettings; // Use this for initialization void Start () { GameObject res = (GameObject)Instantiate(prefabs[0]); }</code>Now go back out to scene view, and add the new GameManager prefab to the prefabs collection of MainScript.When the main scene loads, the GameManager is set up, but is not part of the main scene's hierarchy, so the two are no longer tied up together.Now in our second scene, we have a script - SecondScript - and we can get a reference to the ClientSettings we created in the previous scene like so:<code>private ConnectionSettings _clientSettings; // Use this for initialization void Start () { _clientSettings = FindObjectOfType<ConnectionSettings> (); }</code>And the scenes can start and finish without creating strange long-running scene side effects.

• Wireless Drivers for Broadcom BCM 4321 (14e4:4329) will not stay connected to a wireless network

  So, I'm not necessary new to Linux, I just never took the time to learn it, so please, bare with me. I just swapped out one of my wireless cards from one computer to another. This wireless card in question would be a "Broadcom BCM4321 (14e4:4329)" or actually a "Netgear WN311B Rangemax Next 270 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter", but that's not important. I've tried (but probably screwed up in the process) installing the "wl" , "b43" and "brcmsmac" drivers, or at least I think I did. Currently I have only the following drivers loaded: eugene@EugeneS-PCu:~$ lsmod | grep "brcmsmac\|b43\|ssb\|bcma\|wl" b43 387371 0 bcma 52096 1 b43 mac80211 630653 1 b43 cfg80211 484040 2 b43,mac80211 ssb_hcd 12869 0 ssb 62379 2 b43,ssb_hcd The main issue is that with most of the drivers available that I've installed, they will find my wireless network but, they will only stay connected for about a minute with abnormally slow speed and then all of a sudden disconnect. Currently, the computer is hooked into another to share it's connect so that I can install drivers from the internet instead of loading them on to a flash drive and doing it offline. If anyone has any insight to the problem, that would be awesome. If not, I'll probably just look up how to install the Windows closed source driver. Edit 1: Even when I try the method here, as suggested when this was marked as a duplicate, I still can't stay connected to a wireless network. Edit 2: After discussing my issue with @Luis, he opened my question back up and told me to include the tests/procedures in the comments. Basically I did this: Read the first answer of the link above when this question was marked as duplicate which involved installing removing bcmwl-kernel-source and instead install firmware-b43-installer and b43-fwcutter. No change of result and contacted Luis in the comments, who then told me to try the second answer which involved removing my previous mistake and installing bcmwl-kernel-source Now the Network Manger (this has happend before, but usally I fixed it by using a different driver) even recognizes WiFi exist (both non-literal and literal). Luis who then suggested sudo rfkill unblock all rfkill unblock all didn't return anything, so I decide to try sudo rfkill list all. Returns nothing (no wonder rfkill unblock all did nothing). I enter lsmod | grep "brcmsmac\|b43\|ssb\|bcma\|wl" and that returns nothing. Try loading the driver by entering sudo modprobe b43 and try lsmod | grep "brcmsmac\|b43\|ssb\|bcma\|wl" again. Returns this: eugene@Eugenes-uPC:~$ sudo modprobe b43 eugene@Eugenes-uPC:~$ lsmod | grep "brcmsmac\|b43\|ssb\|bcma\|wl" b43 387371 0 bcma 52096 1 b43 mac80211 630653 1 b43 cfg80211 484040 2 b43,mac80211 ssb_hcd 12869 0 ssb 62379 2 b43,ssb_hcd So to recap: Currently Network Manager doesn't recognize Wireless exists, b43 drivers are loaded and I've currently hardwired a connect from my laptop to the computer that's causing this.

• Bodies do not stay sticked together by joint in retina display

  I'm rehearsing on Box2D revolute joints. Everything's going pretty well except for one thing. For some reason bodies joined together with revolute joints do not stay sticked, they start getting apart from each other from the app start when I run it on retina device or simulator. On non retina device it works just fine, as expected. Here's the screenshot of the non-retina version: And here's the behavior when I run the same app on retina device/simulator: I'm taking content scale factor into account.

  I can start up IntelliJ Idea using the commandline, which is a shell script that starts up a java process. It then appears in the launcher, as normal. I can select "Keep in Launcher", but it only remains there until I reboot, then it disapears again. This is the only application I've seen that does this - Stuff already in the applications menu stocks around fine if I tell it to stay in the launcher.

His problem is he keeps hearing terms that he hasn't heard of (i.e. NoSql, sharding, agure, sevice bus, etc.) and he would prefer to at least have a fighting chance of knowing something about them without having to be reactive and looking them up. Also I think he wants to have a big picture of all the emerging technologies and where they fit in together instead of just learning about each thing in isolation. He asked about blogs but I'm thinking print magazines may also help.

• How to make an object stay relative to another object

  In the following example there is a guy and a boat. They have both a position, orientation and velocity. The guy is standing on the shore and would like to board. He changes his position so he is now standing on the boat. The boat changes velocity and orientation and heads off. My character however has a velocity of 0,0,0 but I would like him to stay onboard. When I move my character around, I would like to move as if the boat was the ground I was standing on. How do keep my character aligned properly with the boat? It is exactly like in World Of Warcraft, when you board a boat or zeppelin. This is my physics code for the guy and boat: this.velocity.addSelf(acceleration.multiplyScalar(dTime)); this.position.addSelf(this.velocity.clone().multiplyScalar(dTime)); The guy already has a reference to the boat he's standing on, and thus knows the boat's position, velocity, orientation (even matrices or quaternions can be used).
