• Marek's JAX-RS 2.0 content from Devoxx 2011

  Marek Potociar, one of the two co-spec leads for the upcoming JAX-RS 2.0 had a very well-attended session at Devoxx and wrote a blog post about it detailing his conference experience (1st time at Devoxx) and running through the new features of the specification. A link to slides is also included in his post. The work by the expert group seems very solid at this point as you can read for yourself in details in the recently published early draft document. • Can not install Ubuntu on Samsung Ultrabook Series 5 (Win 7!)

  I have a Samsung Ultrabook Series 5 with Windows 7 (which I want to keep)... I can boot from a USB stick without a problem and ubuntu work fine, but when I want to install it, the installation progress is stopped and it won't go further. It stop with the message: Checking filesystem Before that, I got also a message, that the system can't unmount the /cdrom (which the ultrabook doesn't have!) Thank you very much for help!

• MySQL works with straight php, but not in phpMyAdmin or in Drupal

  I just updated from PHP 5.1 to 5.2 and both drupal and phpMyAdmin stopped being able to save information. I've checked the mysql user permissions - they look ok. I wrote some simple php to insert a row into a table, and it works, but if I try to do the same thing in phpMyAdmin, it just says "no change". phpMyAdmin will delete rows, select rows, but not insert or update them. Drupal does the same thing - it will select info from the tables ok, but not insert or update (or delete). Any ideas? I'm really starting to get desperate! Cheers, Marek

• RESTful Java on Steroids (Parleys, Podcast, ...)

If you're interested in what the future holds for RESTful Java web services, you can now watch Marek's Devoxx presentation or listen to him in the latest Java Spotlight Podcast (#74). Marek discusses the new client API, filters/handlers, BeanValidation integration, Hypermedia support (HATEOAS), server-side async processing and more. With JSR 339's Early Draft Review 2 currently out, another draft review is planned for April, the public review should be available in June while the final draft is currently scheduled for the end of the summer. In short, expect completion sometime before the end of 2012.

• nginx serving php for download (previously: nginx multiple location alias 404)

Any ideas?

I would like to track these visits as direct traffic. How to change the configuration to track mod_rewritten traffic on my subdomain coming from my own domain as direct traffic?

• USB Device first mounted as root, then by user

  When I connect my Kindle, it shows up as an usb0 media, which I can read but not write (owner = root). However, if I do sudo umount /media/usb0, usb0 gets unmounted and a Kindle media gets mounted properly (is writable etc.). What can cause such strange behavior? It's not only with Kindle, but with Flash drives etc. as well. • How can I play a DVD-A (DVD-Audio) disc?

  I was able to play such a disc using VLC, but I am wondering if any music player supports the DVD-A format. UPDATE: I checked Rhythmbox and Banshee - I found no option like Play Disc or Open Disc, so I have no idea how I could even try to start playing a DVD-A disc. This has also nothing to do with missing plug-ins or codecs - the packages gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad and ubuntu-restricted-extras were installed on my machine before. I guess I am stuck with VLC (Totem shows a DVD menu, but then hangs). However, I am missing the regular music player experience - ability to change order of tracks, adding tracks to a playlist, listening only to selected tracks, etc. I found Idea #22415: Please add full support for DVD-Audio and LPCM at Ubuntu Brainstorm.

• HP Pavilion tx2000 - Wifi adapter no longer works after moving from 12.04 to a 12.10 clean install

  I have a HP Pavilion tx2000 that I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 on for a couple of months without any problems (wifi worked great) until yesterday when my hard drive failed. I replaced the hard drive and decided to install Ubuntu 12.10. Unlike 12.04, the wifi did not work after the installation finished and all the updates where installed (over Ethernet). The network drop down in the top right didn't even show a wireless option. I Googled about for a bit and found some solutions that seemed like they might work. Unfortunately they did not. Here is what I tried: sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer Restart the computer. And the wifi still didn't work. At which point I panicked a bit and tried to undo the previous commands by running: sudo apt-get remove b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-lpphy-installer sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source Restart the computer. The wifi still doesn't work. This is where I stopped because I have no idea what I am doing and don't want to mess something up. The network drop down still doesn't show a wireless option and the hardware wifi switch on the laptop is amber (it turns blue when the wifi is on). Pushing the hardware switch turns the hard block back on and I have to run sudo rfkill unblock all multiple times again to turn it off. Any help is appreciated! • SAT and then what?

  I am on my way to make another Arkanoid game but this time I decided that I want it a little bit more realistic than just checking intersections between AABB and inverting one vector's component on collision. So I found SAT but I don't know how can I change direction of the ball in realistic matter. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like knowing MTV doesn't give me much. So my question is what algorithms should I use to make it realistic? I also care about possibility of spinning ball with a pallet. I don't know how to do it exactly but I guess I will need to consider acceleration of the pallet.

• How do I get a Canon MP550 working with Gutenprint?

  My printer canonMP550 doesn't work with i7 x86 64bit under Ubuntu 11.10 with cups+Gutenprint2.5.7. What I found, is: in gutenprint it is translated into ip4000 only, but it belongs to the group ip4700, which is translated into ip4300 (parameter). I tried to correct, read only, what to do? Next is gutenprint uses cups 1.2, but installed is cups 1.5 , so instead system/library/ color sync/ ..... it is usr/share/color/icc/sRGB.icc. So this seem to be real bugs, but Ii am new and need help to correct this staff!

• How is constant buffer allocation handled in DX11?

  I'm starting with DX11 and I'm not sure if I'm doing the things right. I want to have both pixel and vertex shader program in one file. Both use some shared and some different constant buffers. Does that mean it still uses just two buffers or does it initialize 0 and 2 buffer pointers to empty? Thank you.

Usually I need to fetch some remote data (covered by authorization process) to local cache. And on next request: Check networking Check presence of cache file Check version of cache file (if networking) Get new version and save cache (if networking and file not in cache, or outdated) Data store is no-SQL JSON Document-Based (and yes, I know about CouchDB Android version, but it doesn't fit my needs yet.) Process of authorizing to data source and code for check version of local cache is adapted to application. But the other code (handling network, saving cache, handling exceptions,...) is always the same. Is there any Data Store helper I can use, which provides functions I described above?

• Bitbucket - permission denied (public key)

  I have repos in github and bitbucket. First I wanted to use same public key in bb and gh with no luck. So I created another public key, my .ssh/config file look like this: Host bb HostName bitbucket.org User somename PreferredAuthentications publickey IdentityFile C:/Documents and Settings/Marek/.ssh/bb Host github HostName github.com User somename PreferredAuthentications publickey IdentityFile C:/Documents and Settings/Marek/.ssh/id_rsa bb.pub is for bitbucket. I pasted key from this file to bitbucket. I still having Permission denied (public key) when I try to push my initial commit. Could somebody help?

• Displaying FontFamily in Combobox

  Hi. My goal is to manipulate the text-styles of my application via DependencyProperties. I got a diagram in which the texts are to be manipulated in size, fontfamily, color, etc. So I'd like to use an interface similar to a rich text editor like Word. I'm using this code in my TextStyleVM http://shevaspace.blogspot.com/2006/12/i-have-some-fun-with-formattedtext_14.html So I have a FontFamilyProperty and a Getter and Setter for it: public static DependencyProperty FontFamilyProperty = DependencyProperty.Register( "FontFamily", typeof(FontFamily), typeof(OutlinedText), new FrameworkPropertyMetadata( SystemFonts.MessageFontFamily, FrameworkPropertyMetadataOptions.AffectsRender | FrameworkPropertyMetadataOptions.AffectsMeasure), new ValidateValueCallback(IsValidFontFamily)); public FontFamily FontFamily { get { return (FontFamily)base.GetValue(FontFamilyProperty); } set { base.SetValue(FontFamilyProperty, value); } } Then there is a ToStyle method, which sets the style for the labels of the diagram, which are to be manipulated: Style style = new Style(); Binding fontFamilyBinding = new Binding("FontFamily"); fontFamilyBinding.Source = this; Setter fontFamilySetter = new Setter(); fontFamilySetter.Property = TextBlock.FontFamilyProperty; fontFamilySetter.Value = fontFamilyBinding; style.Setters.Add(fontFamilySetter); return style; Now this works for a TextBox. The textbox displays the current FontFamily, and if I enter a new, valid FontFamily like Arial into the textbox the FontFamily of the labels are changed. However, what I'd like to have is a combobox, which displays the SystemFonts and where I can choose one FontFamily for my labels. However, the binding doesn't seem to work. Neither the system fonts nor the current fonts of the labels are displayed. The combobox is just empty. This is my xaml: <r:RibbonLabel Content="FontFamily" /> <!--these do not work--> <r:RibbonComboBox SelectedItem="{Binding FontFamily}"/> <r:RibbonComboBox ItemsSource="{Binding FontFamily}"/> <!--this works--> <r:RibbonTextBox Text="{Binding FontFamily}"/> Now, I assume I have to set a different Setter for a ComboBox in the ToStyle Method. But I have no clue, which one. Maybe someting like this: fontFamilySetter.Property = ComboBox.ItemSource; However, if I set that Property, the TextBox still works. So is this the wrong place to start at? I'd also be grateful if someone could hint me to some documentation about using these Style-, Setter-, Binding-key-words, which are used in the ToStyle method, since this is somebody elses code I'm working with.

• Embedded QGraphicsView do not hide after Dialog closes

  I call a QDialog in to modes, showNormal and showFullscreen. In normal mode all works fine. With a Keyevent the Dialog closes as expected. In Fullscreen, after a keyevent the Dialog closes, but the QGraphicsView will stay on top.
