• trying to set and use a password via commandline using ultraVNC on windows server 2003 vnc

  Okay, so I installed ultravnc on windows server 2003. It uses the ultravnc.i.i file to store password and configuration information. But I'd like to be able to set the password using the command line. There is a tool called vncpwd: http://www.sysworksoft.net/products/vncpwd.html But it's old, and when you use it to change the password, it changes the password in the system registry instead of the ultravnc.ini file. But, you can set ultravnc to use the registry instead of the ini file. Success? No. I set ultravnc to use the registry (which stores the hashed password that I set using vncpwd), but, it still uses the password in the .ini file. does anyone know what gives.

• controlling how UltraVNC handles ALT+TAB

  Most of the time it ignores it and I am able to switch away from UltraVNC to another application. I like this behavior. However, occasionally it gets into a mode where - for no discernable reason - it passes the Alt+Tab to the remote host which is incredibly annoying as I am used to the other behavior and suddenly I have no keyboard shortcut to switch to a different local windows. Since it appears to exhibit both behaviors, I assume there is some way to control which behavior is in use, but I haven't been able to find it

  I am attempting to run a program that uses OpenGL to render a model in a viewport through VNC unsuccessfully. The error message I receive is - Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":1.0". It was my understanding that VNC can be configured to render all graphics remotely and send a compressed screen grab from the display buffer to the local client. This would seem to negate the need for GLX extensions on the local client. Can VNC be configured this way and could you briefly describe how? • Full Uninstall winvnc.exe

  This computer (Windows 7) has not been able to run Windows Aero after I installed some VNC software, UltraVNC and TightVNC. I want to get Aero back, and Microsoft Fix It tells me that it can't be turned on because of mirror drivers (this edition includes Aero, and I had it working well before), which I managed to learn can come from winvnc.exe, which is installed by both programs. I would like to uninstall winvnc.exe and the service from this computer. I messed with the command line a little (I know, I aws being careful), but I couldn't get anywhere, I'm a total beginner with the command line. Can someone please help me remove the exe file and the service, so the mirror drivers are disabled and I can use Aero again? I don't need the VNC servers (I couldn't get them to work anyway), but if keeping the clients is possible that would be nice.

• Reverse rdesktop or VNC overlay image!

  Hi all. I've got a central server (linux based) and many clients (Windows XP Embedded, afaik) in public places around my country. I need to have these clients to connect to the server with a "reverse" tunnel, that is to say that I need to control the clients from the server but the connection is initialized by clients. The requirement is that, during the connection, an overlay image (or something like that, like a modified version of login screen) is displayed. Some stuff like "Work In Progress". My first idea was to use vncviewer -listen and vnc in reverse mode, but cannot understand how to obfuscate the work I'm doing. Other idea was to use rdesktop in "reverse" mode, but it seems it does not support it. Using rdekstop reverse seems the nicest solution (I can login back the user was in before connection, the login manager - which I can modified - is displayed), but any hint will be appreciated! • Has anyone had trouble with Intellisense in Visual Studio when using UltraVNC?

  Hi, a colleague and I are trying pair programming for the first time. We both remote into a development machine; I'm using RemoteDesktop and my colleague is using UltraVNC. This works great except that he can't see the Intellisense dropdown in Visual Studio 2008. According to online posts, this may be something to do with DirectDraw, but I don't see much by way of a workaround. Has anyone else experienced this? Thanks, Andrew

• Remote Desktop Connection to the same screen as on the monitor?

  I'm running Windows Home Server on, well, my server. It's in my entertainment center, hooked to my TV, and I use it to listen to music and watch movies. Right now I have a keyboard and mouse stuck beside my TV so that I'm able to load a movie. It would be nice, though, to be able to remotely control the screen. Remote Desktop Connection seems to open its own session in the background, separate from the session shown on the monitor. This doesn't do any good because things started via remote desktop must be closed or changed via remote desktop, and I can't start a movie with remote desktop and then see it from the screen. Is there a way to get Remote Desktop Connection to connect to the visible screen? I am currently using UltraVNC; it was doing the job, but it has its quirks. For instance, the problem just now that prompted me to ask this question; upon trying to connect, UltraVNC informs me that "Server closed connection - The server running as application". This is just one of several problems I've had with it, and I want something that is as reliable and low-maintenance as the built-in Remote Desktop Connection. (and free) If the answer to the above is no, I'm welcome to recommendations for a different remote desktop system to try.

  I'd like to set up an environment where I can use VNC to remotely support my clients over the internet. No VPNs involved. I've used the UltraVNC repeater in the past, but the problem is that it requires a dedicated Windows server. What I'd like to do is as follows: VNC Client (me) - NAT - Internet - NAT - VNC Server (the person I'm offering support to) I'd basically like the same functionality that the UltraVNC repeater offers, but the only internet environment I have to host something on is a Linux shared server (standard hosting - PHP, Apache, etc.). Requirements: Multiple platform support for both Client and Server - specifically Mac and Windows Allows for connection with multiple NATs involved (Client and Server side) Will allow me to use my existing hosting environment for any repeater that might be involved I believe the way this would work is that the Server (the person I'm offering support to) when online would connect to a listener on the internet. When they needed support I would connect my Client to the same listener, see them connected, and use the listener (man-in-the-middle) to piggyback my Client to connect to their Server. I'm open to using any software (not limiting myself to VNC) but would prefer a FOSS solution (which is why I'm leaning towards VNC). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  I'm looking for a replacement for a custom vnc server that we have been using in my company for a long time. I need a simple executable that can be run from command line by an IT Support software without the user noticing it (our application will warn the user, we don't want him to see we are using that VNC sever). I need it to support Windows and preferably also OSX. The only option I've found is UltraVNC, but I can't configure it from command line to accept loopback connections without authentication. We have already a whole VNC Viewer + VNC Repeater + Bouncers architecture, and the only missing piece is the VNC Server. Do you know any solution you could suggest me? I'm afraid I'll end up developing a new VNC server myself, may be based on an open source one. EDIT: When I said I don't want the user to notice this VNC server, I should have added that I don't want him even noticing the installation. So better if it can be installed silently or can be executed as a portable executalbe (for instance, ultravnc can be installed and ran as a service from command line, or simply executed quietly, with only a notification icon; its problem is that I can't run it without authentication).

  After a Windows update I cannot connect to a Windows Server 2008 machine via RDP. As an alternative, I remotely installed UltraVNC using PsExec. The WinVNC service starts successfully but when I try to connect remotely, I receive the following error message: This server does not have a valid password enabled. Until a password is set, incoming connections cannot be enabled. Since I don't have desktop access to the machine, how do I set the password?

  I just installed vino, but when I run it, I get the following error. # ./start_vnc (vino-server:2502): EggSMClient-CRITICAL **: egg_sm_client_set_mode: assertion `global_client == NULL || global_client_mode == EGG_SM_CLIENT_MODE_DISABLED' failed ** Message: The desktop sharing service is already running, exiting. MORE DETAILS: UltraVNC client running on a Windows computer can login and shows the Ubuntu desktop, and controls the Ubuntu mouse to do things, but the VNC client view at the Windows computer does NOT show any changes to the display at the Ubuntu desktop, only the original desktop view at the time of VNC client login. UPDATE I solved it by following the askubuntu post: "VNC session very slow in 12.04 compared to older versions", which said to do this: gsettings set org.gnome.Vino disable-xdamage true ..and it worked. But should I be concerned about the error messages?

  Since I have my home network behind a WRT54G, the router has an external "real" IP address, and the PCs behind it have 192.168.xxx.xxx addresses. I would like to be able to control one of them remotely - preferably using UltraVNC, but I am open to suggestions. Since I can't directly address that PC from the internet, I figured I could address a port on my router and have the traffic forwarded to the PC (and the same in the reverse direction). I set some application to autorun each time Administrator (console) was login on W2K3 SP2 server I use Remote Desktop from XP SP3, using the same login as Administrator It creates a new session with the same username and the application starts autorun which make duplicity in application I just hoping i can enforce the Remote Desktop client to connect into only one session (console session), toying with Group Policy setting, successfully enforce the one session, but whenever i close remote desktop (disconnect) the console got disconnected too (which I didn't want it to behave like that). I also try some setting to limit connection, still it doesn't behave as I want it too. Simple i just want to use 1 session, but each time we close remote desktop the session still alive, much like when we use VNC solution (RealVNC, UltraVNC, TinyVNC etc.) Any solution(s)?

• How to send Windows key over VNC to Linux from Windows?

  Alright, so I'm running Linux with AwesomeWM on my home machine. I'm running x11vnc on that machine and I want to connect to it from a windows machine. So it suffices to say that I need the Windows key for my home machine to function. I really like TightVNC, but I have found that only RealVNC is able to send the Windows key presses that I need. My problem is that RealVNC is sorely lacking customization and I feel it's inferior to TightVNC and unusable. I know that Ctrl-Esc sends the windows key press in Tight but then I can't use it as a modifier key. Useless. Anyone have any ideas? I don't think it's a server issue since I've tried Tightvnc server on the linux machine and it still doesn't work, at least in TightVNC. It works with Real anyway. Oh and UltraVNC doesn't work either.

• Windows XP to Ubuntu 10.04 via VNC does not refresh

  I've tried tightvncserver and vnc4server on Ubuntu. I've tried tightvnc viewer and ultravnc viewer on Windows XP. I can connect from Windows to Ubuntu with any combination, but there is no screen refresh: I can drag a window on Ubuntu using my mouse in Windows or type into a terminal in Ubuntu from my keyboard in Windows, but the image does not change on Windows. I can request a screen refresh from Windows but the screen does not update. I am running the ATI driver on Ubuntu. I've tried stepping the System|Preferences|Appearance|Visual Effects down from Extra to Normal with no effect.
