• Asus ux31e zenbook SSD non-standard / cant upgrade hdd?

  I bought a ux31e asus zenbook, and the drive crashed last week. I just cancelled an mSata ssd order because I fear asus has used a non standard ssd!!! what a bunch of crooks, ive lost all my respect for this company! Can anyone confirm what and why? My SSD model is xm11 128gb - it looks like a ram chip and only has two tongues with 12 and 6 pins respectively. The drive I was about to order mSata had 8 where mine had 6 - i never bothered counting the rest. This article seems to confirm! • Sentelic Touchpad Scrolling ASUS UX31 Zenbook

  The capabilities of the touchpad on the new ASUS UX31 Zenbook leave much to be desired. The touchpad works like a mouse, but no vertical or horizontal scrolling. I contacted a developer who works for Sentelic. He said: Unless driver does some non-trivial works based on coordinates output, I'm afraid that it won't have scrolling support at this moment. and Windows driver does scrolling in driver where current Linux driver doesn't have such feature, yet. Additionaly, given that the resource is quite limited at this moment, I'm afraid that there is no firm schedule for scrolling support in Linux driver. How can we get this driver to do some "non-trivial works based on coordinate output"?

• How to dualboot Ubuntu on Asus Zenbook UX32VD?

  I have just purchased a Asus Zenbook UX32VD and it will arrive on Monday. However, I do not know how to dualboot Ubuntu on this, because of two reasons: It is a hybrid 500GB HDD + 30GB SSD, therefore the OS has to be smart enough to use the SSD to speed things up. But what does this mean when selecting partitions etc. while installing Ubuntu next to Windows 7? It does not have an optical drive; windows 7 is preinstalled. What steps should I follow to dualboot Ubuntu on this correctly? Will this cope with the HDD+SSD hybrid technology?

• Windows 7 doesnt boot after installing Ubuntu 12.10 (Asus Zenbook Prime / UEFI problem)

  Today I installed Ubuntu and since then i cannot boot into Windows anymore. I used the "standard" option (didnt change any partitions manually, just entered the size) but used the UEFI-mode. At first the GRUB entries for Windows did not work at all, after reading this thead i was able to add a new Grub entry - now i can get into the "windows-loading" screen for a few seconds but then i always see some kind of bluescreen for a fraction of a second and the laptop reboots. I can get into the windows recovery partition but the only option there is to reset everything to factory settings (+erase all data). I have no idea how to get into the Windows 7 repair mode which was mentioned here (tried everything else in this thread too - no success). My boot info can be found here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1411573/ I have no idea what went wrong (there is even an extra page for the Zenbook Prime where no installation problems are mentioned). I would appreciate any help/ideas, many thanks!

• Erratic display behaviour on 12.04 using an Asus Zenbook

  When I first plugged in my 23 inch monitor through the mini-VGA port, everything worked...both display were detected, and worked. On the second or third plug in, the internal display would turn off, and only the external display would work. When I try to 'detect monitor', I got "could not set the configuration for crtc 63" a few times. Now, when I plug in the external display, I get a screen full of orange color on the external display, and the laptop display turns off. The only way to get things back is to force turn off the laptop and restart. Unplugging/replugging monitor doesn't work, and seems like ubuntu crashes. Can anyone help?

  How do I EFI boot Zenbook Prime UX31A from built-in card reader? Ubuntu 12.10 64bit has been copied onto an a SD card which I'm trying to boot from. When I power on my Zenbook and press ESC, the SD card isn't an option. There is an "Add boot option" in the BIOS but it requires a few a things that I'm not quite sure of. Add boot option - I guess any identifier works here. I've been entering ubuntu. Select Filesystem - The only option available is PCI(1F|2)\DevicePath(Type 3, SubType 12)HD(Part1,Sig787e6287-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx) Path for boot option - I've been entering ubuntu:\EFI\BOOT\BOOTx64.EFI Then I select Create and the new boot option appears in the boot menu but it doesn't work.

• Computer turns on by itself

  I have a really strange problem here. I have a Asus Zenbook Prime running Windows 7. Whenever I put it to sleep and I have Pandora open (but paused) in my web browser, several hours later the computer turns itself back on and Pandora will unpause itself and start playing. (More often than not this happens at 3AM in the morning so I am less than pleased.) What the heck is going on here? I've never even heard of this happening before...

  I just purchased an Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A-DH51 with Windows 8. I want to wipe the drive and do a clean install but USB is not listed as a boot option in the BIOS. Does this mean it is not possible? Here is a photo of my BIOS options. This is the only option I get when I click Add New Boot Option. Not sure if I can add USB here. * Update * Asus tech emailed and said: "Unfortunately with Windows 8 you can not boot from bios."

  I cannot figure out where to install the boot loader on my Zenbook UX31A Prime. I have installed Ubuntu many times on normal hard drives, but this is the first SSD and I am struggling. Installed Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit selecting "UEFI: general" boot entry. Installation type: Something Else Created partition /sda5 mount as /, /sda6 mount as /home, /sda7 mount as swap Selected /dev/sda for boot loader installation. Other options are /dev/sda, /dev/sda1/dev/sda3 Windows 7 (loader) ... • Converting ASUS Zenbook from Win8 to Win7.. do i need raid drivers?

  I've got an ASUS ZEnBook Prime, ASUS Zenbook UX301LA-XH72T 13.3" Touch Ultrabook and it runs 500GB SDD on RAID 0 configuration. This notebook is running Windows 8, and i desperately need to convert to Windows 7, but maintain RAID 0 configuration. My question is, will i have problems maintaining RAID 0 once converted? I would assume that the RAID 0 configuration is BIOS based and WINDOWS wont even know it, and will only see 1 drive regardless... right? Or will i need to do some weird Windows stuff to maintain RAID 0 config? = which doesn't make sense to me why it would.

• I need advice on laptop purchase for university [closed]

  I'm currently in University studying Computer Science/IT/Information Technology. And this first year i've managed to do with the laptop I had; an ASUS Eee PC 1000H with a 10.1" screen. But this is getting way too underpowered and small for programming more than just quick programming introduction excercises. So I'm looking to buy a more suitable laptop. It's not supposed to be a desktop replacement though, since I've got a pretty good desktop already with a 24" monitor. So the kinda laptop I want to buy is one suited for university. If this bears any significance, I'm working in Java atm, but I will likely work with lots of other things incl. web development. I'm looking to spend about $1700 plus/minus. And it should be powerful/big enough for working on programming projects as well as the usual university stuff like MATLAB, Maple, etc out "in the field", and sometimes for maybe a week when visiting my parents. What I'm looking at right now is the ASUS Zenbook UX31A with the 1920 x 1080 resolution on 13.3" IPS display. But I'm kinda nervous that this will be too petite for programming. In essence i'm looking for a powerfull computer, that has good enough battery, and looks good. I would love suggestions or any type of feedback, either with maybe a better choice, or input on how its like programming on 13" laptops. Very much thanks in advance for anyone who even went through all that! PS. I don't want a mac, or my inner karma would commit Seppuku xD But experiences from working on the 13" Macbook Air would kinda be equivalent to the Zenbook i'm considering, so I would love to hear that. tl;dr The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog ;)

  Possible Duplicate: There's an issue with an Alpha/Beta Release of Ubuntu, what should I do? In my previous question I described my problem with starting / returning from suspend using Ubuntu on the Asus UX32VD (Zenbook). This problem could be solved by using Ubuntu 12.10 (alpha), however since the upgrade to beta 1 the old problem of starting / returning from suspend has returned. I found that starting in recovery does work, but this of course does not solve the problem. Any thoughts?

• Laptop shuts down randomly without warning

  My Asus Zenbook UX32V turns off randomly when I'm working on it. This happens both when the computer is recently turned on (5 minutes), and after being on for several days. I'm not running any heavy software The laptop is not heating The fan is not working on the maximum capacity (it's not heating) It happens when the laptop is lying still on the table It is no warning, it simply goes black It happens both when charging and on battery My guess is that it suddenly lose power somehow. What puzzles me is that I can flip the laptop upside down, sideways, shake it, etc. without it shutting off. This makes me think it's not something that's loose causing occasional short-circuits. I realize that the laptop probably doesn't like flipping and shaking, but it was the best way I could troubleshoot. I rarely turn the computer off, only have it in hibernate or sleep mode (most often hibernate). I've never experienced that the laptop is off when I wake it up from sleep mode. I've had the problem for a few months and it happens 2-8 times a week. Specs: Asus Zenbook UX32V Windows 8.1 (it happened in Windows 8.0 too) Intel i5-3317U CPU @ 1.70GHz The laptop is approx 1.5 years, but it has a small dent on one of the sides that probably voids the warranty. The dent has been there since week one and I don't think it's related to the problems I'm having now. Does anyone have a clue what might cause this, and how it might be fixed? I've read all other questions (some of which are listed below) that seem related to my issue, but none report the same behavior as I'm experiencing. • Ubuntu 12.04.1 completely freezing very often [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What should I do when Ubuntu freezes? I am running ubuntu 12.04.1 on an asus zenbook prime (UX31A), and I am having a problem where the entire OS freezes at random times. It doesn't seem to happen in response to any certain event, it will even sometimes happen while just moving the mouse, not even clicking on anything. The entire system will freeze, mouse and keyboard do not work, and any music/video will freeze and audio will loop. I can do nothing but hold the power button to reboot the computer. I've had this problem for a while, and just yesterday gotten around to backing up everything and doing a fresh install. Lo and behold, I get a freeze within 20 minutes of a fresh install. I've googled this a lot, and cannot find anything that resembles it exactly (some people have everything but mouse/keyboard freeze, some people only have the mouse/keyboard freeze).

It's obvious that the high-resolution displays on these laptops is useful for entertainment, photo-editing, and other things. My question is this: Do these displays provide any benefit for programmers? Do these displays make code any easier to read? Are they any easier on the eyes after a whole day of staring at the screen?

• Ubuntu 12.04.1 Setup doesn't detect Windows 7 partition

  I'm not really that of a linux pro, more of a noob. But i can handle console operations. Well, this is my system: ASUS ZenBook Prime UX31A 256 GB ADATA MX11 SSD Intel Core i5-3317U (Ivy-Bridge) I have a fresh installation of Windows 7 Ultimate (not activated) on a 90 GB NTFS Partition on my SSD, the rest is unassigned. I want to install Ubuntu 12.04.1 from an USB Stick (no CD-Drive...) created with Universal USB Installer 1.9.1.1. However I'm not givven the option 'Install alongside Windows', and when i choose 'other' it shows that 256 GB of 256 GB are unassigned (free) Memory. os-prober gave me: /dev/sda1/:Windows 7 (loader):Windows:chain I also tried: sudo dmraid -rE and: sudo apt-get remove dmraid with no success... How can I install Ubuntu alongside Windows? Thanks very much in advance!

• Black screen after upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10

  Just upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 and all I got was a black screen. The hardware I'm running is Asus Zenbook UX31A (Intel GPU). I do hear that the login screen drums do play, so the system does boot to login screen. When I try to boot using kernel 3.11.0-12 recovery mode, it tells me "initctl: event failed". Then if I go on an press ctrl+alt+f2, log in and command startx, it dies because "Fatal server error: no screens found". Here are some logs from /var/log/Xorg.0.log http://pastebin.com/ZQasUKJx Kernel 3.8.0-31 work ok, as did things before the upgrade.

• Trying to update Asus BIOS: FreeDOS crashes

  My UX31 zenbook is experiencing some weird shutdown behavior when the battery drops below 50% and the internet seems to agree that updating the BIOS is a good step forward since there were issue with the kernel before. I downloaded both the correct BIOS file and the windows 7 utility tool and now need to boot FreeDOS to run, however, I've tried every method out there and they all fail (or so I think): Using unetbootin's FreeDOS 1.0 image I get to an error saying it couldn't run drivers then I get to a command line on disk A:. I assumed a dead end. Using unetbootin but with the FreeDOS 1.1 version image downloaded directly: get an error of "bad or missing command interpreter". I looked online and the solutions didn't work either. So, is there an alternative to FreeDOS or to installing a BIOS that I could use?

• Problems with Intel graphics and external display

  I have Asus Zenbook ux31 with Intel HD 3000 GPU and Ubuntu 12.10 64 bits. I usually use external monitor and when update GPU controller it removes previous configuration. So after updates Ubuntu only detect external monitor and when I enter to Ubuntu with laptop's monitor Unity doesn't start and I only see black screen. If I re-install Ubuntu all works fine until next GPU update :(( Another think that after some GPU update Ubuntu doesn't detect fine monitor and I have to restart 1-2 times Ubuntu to Unity starts fine ¬¬ Someone have some problem and know some solution? I hope some day Intel GPU will work fine with Ubuntu!

• Laggy Graphics After Upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10

  I noticed some issues concerning the graphics after I upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10. More specifically: Dash tends to be more "laggy" than it used to be. When I switch desktops you can clearly see the screen going frame by frame. Menu bar is also "laggy". When I open GIMP, the menu bar is useless after a while - it takes seconds to refresh. The problems seem to appear after some seconds of use. • screen does not wake up after suspend/ brightness will not adjust

  My computer is one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230467 Asus Zenbook UX32A-DB51 Just bought it yesterday. Set to "suspend" when I close the lid, but when I open it up again I just get a black screen. Pressing the power button doesn't work, not does clicking the mouse or any key combination. The same is true if I leave the computer until it suspends. Black screen, no response, have to reboot. I also can't seem to adjust the brightness. I put "brightness up" and "brightness down" function keys in, and when I push them it shows the brightness level as going up and down on the meter, but the screen does not actually become more or less bright. I am totally new to all of this. Please tell me what additional information you need to help me and where I can find it. Thanks! Edit: Tried the following: sudo gedit /etc/default/grub Change the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" into GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux" sudo update-grub Restart your linux And "acpi_backlight=vendor" both to no avail.

• How do I require use of the 5 GHz band when connecting to a Wireless N access point?

  What is says in the topic: there's a Wireless N access point to which I'd like to connect using the 5 GHz band exclusively. How does one accomplish this? Using the directive band=a in the connection configuration file in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections doesn't seem to affect anything (/var/log/syslog still shows attempts by wpa_supplicant to connect using the 2.4 GHz band), and running iwconfig wlan0 freq 5G per this question results in the following error: Error for wireless request "Set Frequency" (8B04) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument. • How to tune touchpad for smaller area?

  I just purchased the Asus Zenbook UX31A and I require some advice regarding tuning the touchpad. Basically my problem is that the mouse buttons are withing the touch area and I would like it to be disabled. Such that only part of the touch area is recognized. I have attached an image to clarify the idea. Basically only the red area in the image should be recognized. I have two reasons for this request. Firstly, I like to hold my thumb on the mouse button instead of holding it in the air. This is problematic, because touchpad thinks that I'm trying some kind of two finger gesture all the time and cursor stops moving. Clicking is also problematic since every finger movement -- regardless of how insignificant it might be -- on the "button" will move the cursor. I have been playing with some synclient settings like AreaBottomEdge etc. They have some effect but then I cannot highlight text or right button stops working. How could I solve this?
