  • SQL SERVER – What is Fill Factor and What is the Best Value for Fill Factor

    - by pinaldave
Working in performance tuning area, one has to know about Index and Index Maintenance. For any Index the most important property is Fill Factor. Fill factor is the value that determines the percentage of space on each leaf-level page to be filled with data. In an SQL Server, the smallest unit is a page, which is made of  Page with size 8K. Every page can store one or more rows based on the size of the row. The default value of the Fill Factor is 100, which is same as value 0. The default Fill Factor (100 or 0) will allow the SQL Server to fill the leaf-level pages of an index with the maximum numbers of the rows it can fit. There will be no or very little empty space left in the page, when the fill factor is 100. I have written following two article about Fill Factor. What is Fill factor? – Index, Fill Factor and Performance – Part 1 What is the best value for the Fill Factor? – Index, Fill Factor and Performance – Part 2 I strongly encourage read them and provide your feedback. • A Review of From Zero To SSIS Training

    - by andyleonard
I recently (5-9 Mar 2012) delivered my five-day SSIS training course – From Zero To SSIS! – in London. The class was delivered in collaboration with TechniTrain . I must commend Chris Webb ( blog | @Technitrain ) and Helen Lau on their leadership, professionalism, and attention to detail. They made the course a breeze for the students and the instructor! It was a pleasure and privilege to work with them. In addition to people just learning data integration, this class contained several experienced...(read more)

  • zero-config CGI enabled web server

    - by halp
To serve static content of a directory over http, one can simply navigate to that directory and type: python -m SimpleHTTPServer 11111 which will start a http server on port 11111. This hack is nice because it requires zero-config: no stand-alone web server, no config files at all. Is it possible to extend this example, or have an alternate way to achieve this goal, but also have CGI support? The final goal is to have a quick and lazy way of serving a web site from a certain directory. The site has static content (HTML pages, images), but also a CGI script. The CGI script must work properly when accessed via browser. Of course I could setup a virtual host in apache, allow CGI inside it etc. But that's not a zero-config approach.

  • trying to divide complex numbers, division by zero

    - by user553619
    I'm trying the program below to divide complex numbers, it works for complex numbers but not when the denominator is real (i.e, the complex part is zero). Division by zero occurs in this line ratio = b->r / b->i ;, when the complex part b->i is zero (in the case of a real denominator). How do I get around this? and why did the programmer do this, instead of the more straightforward rule for complex division The wikipedia rule seems to be better, and no division by zero error would occur here. Did I miss something? Why did the programmer not use the wikipedia formula?? Thanks /*! @file dcomplex.c * \brief Common arithmetic for complex type * * <pre> * -- SuperLU routine (version 2.0) -- * Univ. of California Berkeley, Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, * and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. * November 15, 1997 * * This file defines common arithmetic operations for complex type. * </pre> */ #include <math.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <stdio.h> #include "slu_dcomplex.h" /*! \brief Complex Division c = a/b */ void z_div(doublecomplex *c, doublecomplex *a, doublecomplex *b) { double ratio, den; double abr, abi, cr, ci; if( (abr = b->r) < 0.) abr = - abr; if( (abi = b->i) < 0.) abi = - abi; if( abr <= abi ) { if (abi == 0) { fprintf(stderr, "z_div.c: division by zero\n"); exit(-1); } ratio = b->r / b->i ; den = b->i * (1 + ratio*ratio); cr = (a->r*ratio + a->i) / den; ci = (a->i*ratio - a->r) / den; } else { ratio = b->i / b->r ; den = b->r * (1 + ratio*ratio); cr = (a->r + a->i*ratio) / den; ci = (a->i - a->r*ratio) / den; } c->r = cr; c->i = ci; }

  • [Java] Flood fill using a stack

    - by dafero
Hello to everyone :), I am using the recursive Flood fill algorithm in Java to fill some areas of a image. With very small images it works fine, but when de image becomes larger the JVM gives me a Stack Over Flow Error. That's the reason why I have to reimplement the method using a Flood Fill with my own stack. (I read that's the best way to do it in these kind of cases) Can anyone explain me how to code it? (if you don't have the code at hand, with the pseudo-code of the algorithm will be fine) I've read a lot in the Internet but I haven't understood it very well. Thanks!

  • How to catch a division by zero?

    - by Cristian Castiblanco
I have a large mathematical expression that has to be created dinamically. So, for example, once I have parsed "something" the result will be a string like: "$foo+$bar/$baz";. So, for calculating the result of that expression I'm using the eval function... something like this: eval("\$result = $expresion;"); echo "The result is: $result"; The problem here is that sometimes I get errors that says there was a division by zero, and I don't know how to catch that Exception. I have tried things like: eval("try{\$result = $expresion;}catch(Exception \$e){\$result = 0;}"); echo "The result is: $result"; Or: try{ eval("\$result = $expresion;"); } catch(Exception $e){ $result = 0; } echo "The result is: $result"; But it does not work. So, how can I avoid that my application crashes when there is a division by zero?

  • Gradient fill bitmap and CreatePatternBrush just gives black fill instead of gradient

    - by mtopley
I'm trying to create a Gradient Brush in windows mobile as follows: HBITMAP hBitmap = CreateBitmap(16, 16, 1, 16, NULL); HDC hDC = CreateCompatibleDC(NULL); HBITMAP hPrevious = SelectObject(hDC,hBitmap); TRIVERTEX vert[2]; GRADIENT_RECT gRect; ... fill in vert and gRect GradientFill(hDC, vert, 2,&gRect, 1, Direction); SelectObject(hDC, hPrevious); Delete(hDC); HBRUSH hPatternBrush = CreatePatternBrush(hBitmap); HDC hDC = BeginPaint(hWnd, &ps); SelectObject(hDC, hPatternBrush); RoundRect(hDC, ...); EndPaint(hWND, &ps); This code create a round rect with a black background, not the pattern brush. I can draw the hBitmap which is used to create the brush and it draws the gradient. Anyone got a solution?

  • Possibility of recovering files from a dd zero-filled hard disk

    - by unknownthreat
I have "zero filled" (complete wiped) an external hard disk using dd, and from what I have heard: people said you should at least "zero fill" 3 times to be sure that the data are really wiped and no one can recover anything. So I decided to scan the disk once again after I've zero filled the disk. I was expecting the disk to still have some random binary left. It turned out that it has only a few sequential bytes in the very beginning. This is probably the file structure type and other headers stuff. Other than that, it's all zeros and nothing else. So if we have to recover any file from a zero filled disk, ...how? From what I've heard, even you zero fill the disk, you should still have some data left. ...or could dd really completely annihilate all data?

  • Fill 2D area bound by vertices in XNA

    - by oakskc
I'm learning XNA by doing and, as the title states, I'm trying to see if there's a way to fill a 2D area that is defined by a collection of vertices on a plane. I want to fill with a color, not a file-based texture. For an example, take a rounded rectangle whose vertices are defined by four quarter-circle triangle fans. The vertices are defined by building a collection of triangles, but the triangles may not be adjacent. Additionally, I would like to fill it with more than a single color -- i.e. divide the bound area into four vertical bands and have each a different color. You don't have to provide me the code, pointing me towards resources will help a great deal. I can be handy with Google (which I did try first, but have failed miserably). This is as much an exploration into "what's appropriate for XNA" as it is the implementation of it. Being pretty new to XNA, I'm wanting to also learn what should and shouldn't be done on top of what can and can't be done.

  • Changing a SUM returned NULL to zero

    - by Lee_McIntosh
I have a Stored Procedure as follows: CREATE PROC [dbo].[Incidents] (@SiteName varchar(200)) AS SELECT ( SELECT SUM(i.Logged) FROM tbl_Sites s INNER JOIN tbl_Incidents i ON s.Location = i.Location WHERE s.Sites = @SiteName AND i.[month] = DATEADD(mm, DATEDIFF(mm, 0, GetDate()) -1,0) GROUP BY s.Sites ) AS LoggedIncidents 'tbl_Sites contains a list of reported on sites. 'tbl_Incidents containts a generated list of total incidents by site/date (monthly) 'If a site doesnt have any incidents that month it wont be listed. The problem I'm having is that a site doesnt have any Incidents this month and as such i get a NULL value returned for that site when i run this sproc, but i need to have a zero/0 returned to be used within a chart in SSRS. I've tried the using coalesce and isnull to no avail. SELECT COALESCE(SUM(c.Logged,0)) SELECT SUM(ISNULL(c.Logged,0)) Is there a way to get this formatted correctly? Cheers, Lee

  • MATLAB fill area between lines

    - by dustynrobots
I'm trying to do something similar to what's outlined in this post: MATLAB, Filling in the area between two sets of data, lines in one figure but running into a roadblock. I'm trying to shade the area of a graph that represents the mean +/- standard deviation. The variable definitions are a bit complicated but it boils down to this code, and when plotted without shading, I get the screenshot below: x = linspace(0, 100, 101)'; mean = torqueRnormMean(:,1); meanPlusSTD = torqueRnormMean(:,1) + torqueRnormStd(:,1); meanMinusSTD = torqueRnormMean(:,1) - torqueRnormStd(:,1); plot(x, mean, 'k', 'LineWidth', 2) plot(x, meanPlusSTD, 'k--') plot(x, meanMinusSTD, 'k--') But when I try to implement shading just on the lower half of the graph (between mean and meanMinusSTD) by adding the code below, I get a plot that looks like this: fill( [x fliplr(x)], [mean fliplr(meanMinusSTD)], 'y', 'LineStyle','--'); It's obviously not shading the correct area of the graph, and new near-horizontal lines are being created close to 0 that are messing with the shading. Any thoughts? I'm stumped.

  • Why did instruments report a leak while its ref count did become zero

    - by bromj
Hello guys, green hand i am. I'm using instruments, and it did a great help to me so far, but I'm confused now 'cause it report a memory leak to me while its leaked block history shows me that the ref count of that memory had finally become 0. • Zero division does not throw exception in nunit

    - by Boris
Running the following C# code through NUnit yields Test.ControllerTest.TestSanity: Expected: <System.DivideByZeroException> But was: null So either no DivideByZeroException is thrown, or NUnit does not catch it. Similar to this question, but the answers he got, do not seem to work for me. This is using NUnit 2.5.5.10112, and .NET 4.0.30319. [Test] public void TestSanity() { Assert.Throws<DivideByZeroException>(new TestDelegate(() => DivideByZero())); } private void DivideByZero() { // Parse "0" to make sure to get an error at run time, not compile time. var a = (1 / Double.Parse("0")); } Any ideas?

  • SQL SERVER – Solution – Generating Zero Without using Any Numbers in T-SQL

    - by pinaldave
SQL Server MVP and my friend My friend Madhivanan has asked very interesting question on his blog regarding How to Generate Zero without using Any Numbers in T-SQL. He has demonstrated various methods how one can generate Zero. When I posted note regarding how one he has generated Zero without using number in my blog post for Free Online Training, blog readers have come up with few very interesting answers. I really found them very interesting and here I am listing them with due credit. Special mention to Andery.ca as the answer Andery provided is the one, I myself come up with after very first look and that is why I had left the same as hint in the original article. anil try this select count(cast(null as int)) or any false condition select count(*) where ‘a’=’b’ Varinder Sandhu It seems every currency symbol that SQL Server supports. Return the same value as zero i tried some as select € select ¥ select £ Andrey.ca select count(*)-count(*) Vinay Kumar Another way for generate zero. select Ascii(‘Y’)-Ascii(‘Y’) OR select LEN(”) I like Madhivanan’s answer. and it was awesome. • Gateway IP Returns to Zero

    - by Robert Smith
When you set a static IP under Ubuntu 12.04.1, you must supply the desired machine IP and the gateway IP, all using the Network Manager. When I first entered them and rebooted, everything worked great. On the second boot, however, Firefox could find no Web page. Upon checking, I discovered that the gateway IP had returned to zero. Now, no matter how often I resupply it, it returns to zero immediately after NM "saves" it: that is, appears as zero when redisplayed. The only way I can get to the Internet is to restore DHCP operation. I need to use static IP for access to my home network. Would appreciate any suggestion. --Robert Smith

  • Should integer divide by zero halt execution?

    - by Pyrolistical
I know that modern languages handle integer divide by zero as an error just like the hardware does, but what if we could design a whole new language? Ignoring existing hardware, what should a programming language does when an integer divide by zero occurs? Should it return a NaN of type integer? Or should it mirror IEEE 754 float and return +/- Infinity? Or is the existing design choice correct, and an error should be thrown? Is there a language that handles integer divide by zero nicely? EDIT When I said ignore existing hardware, I mean don't assume integer is represented as 32 bits, it can be represented in anyway you can to imagine.
