• New Dell Vostro 3550 will not boot into Live CD

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu and/or it's derivatives on my new Dell Vostro 3550 but I'm finding it impossible to boot into the live CD environment. Here are the things I've already tried: Booting from multiple versions of multiple distributions (Ubuntu 10.10, Ubuntu 11.04, Mint 11, Mint 10) Booting from a Live USB created with unetbootin, the Linux Mint startup disk creator, the universal USB creator and dd of=linuxmint.***.iso if if=/dev/sdx. Burning a CD and booting from the internal CD drive. In the case of the USB keys with the latest versions of Ubuntu it gets to the page where I can select a boot option, but after selecting an option the screen goes black, even the back light turns off. With the older distributions the screen stays on but it starts loading and then just hangs. The CDs don't even try to boot. It starts spinning but then falls back to the default Windows install. The only way I've got it to work so far is with Wubi, but that's hardly ideal. I'd like to have two separate physical partitions with a /home and /. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

  I have been referred to here that it might be of better help, I've got a processing file which handles the user sent data, before that, however, it compares the input from client to the expected values to ensure no client-side data change. I can say I don't know lot about HTTP status codes, but I have made up some research on it, and to choose which one is the best for unexpected input handling. So I came up with: 400 Bad Request: The request cannot be fulfilled due to bad syntax 417 Expectation Failed: The server cannot meet the requirements of the Expect request-header field Now, I cannot be really sure which one to use, I have seen 400 Bad Request being used alot, however, whatI get from explanation is that the error is due to an unexistent request rather than an illegal input. On the other side 417 Expectation Failed seems to just fit for my use, however, I have never seen or experimented this header status before. I need your experience and opinions, thanks alot!   I am using open source streaming server Red5 on multiple servers. Which are running behind a bastion host. the world knows these sites as http://site1.mydomain.com http://site2.mydomain.com http://site3.mydomain.com http://site4.mydomain.com To reach the front end server is using Apache Reverse Proxy. I am also having video streaming on each of these websites using rtmp. To be able to reach the streaming server I embed a javascript in HTML pages as follows Code: <embed ..... var="rtmp://site1.my_domain.com" > the problem is the website are many site1.mydomain.com site2.mydomain.com site3.mydomain.com site4.mydomain.com each on a separate physical server. Each of these four have their own Red5 installations the front end to each of these four is a common Bastion Host. If I run rtmp on each of the subdomains at a different port how will I make sure a request such as rtmp://site1.mydomain.com rtmp://site2.mydomain.com goes to their respective servers. from the front end server. What do I need to handle in this case ? IPTABLES came to mind instantly but from the client browser on internet when some one requests rtmp://site1.mydomain.com how will I make sure this rtmp request is mapped to a port different than 1935 as there are three other streaming servers which are also to respond to their respective requests ?

• When to use HTTP status code 404 in an API

  I am working on a project and after arguing with people at work for about more than a hour. I decided to know what people on stack-exchange might say. We're writing an API for a system, there is a query that should return a tree of Organization or a tree of Goals. The tree of Organization is the organization in which the user is present, In other words, this tree should always exists. In the organization, a tree of goal should be always present. (that's where the argument started). In case where the tree doesn't exist, my co-worker decided that it would be right to answer response with status code 200. And then started asking me to fix my code because the application was falling apart when there is no tree. I'll try to spare flames and fury. I suggested to raise a 404 error when there is no tree. It would at least let me know that something is wrong. When using 200, I have to add special check to my response in the success callback to handle errors. I'm expecting to receive an object, but I may actually receive an empty response because nothing is found. It sounds totally fair to mark the response as a 404. And then war started and I got the message that I didn't understand HTTP status code schema. So I'm here and asking what's wrong with 404 in this case? I even got the argument "It found nothing, so it's right to return 200". I believe that it's wrong since the tree should be always present. If we found nothing and we are expecting something, it should be a 404. More info, I forgot to add the urls that are fetched. Organizations /OrgTree/Get Goals /GoalTree/GetByDate?versionDate=... /GoalTree/GetById?versionId=... My mistake, both parameters are required. If any versionDate that can be parsed to a date is provided, it will return the closes revision. If you enter something in the past, it will return the first revision. If by Id with a id that doesn't exists, I suspect it's going to return an empty response with 200. Extra Also, I believe the best answer to the problem is to create default objects when organizations are created, having no tree shouldn't be a valid case and should be seen as an undefined behavior. There is no way an account can be used without both trees. • Live CD has black screen HP DV6

  Attempting to install/try ubuntu (11.10, 12.04) on my new laptop, using a liveCD (and tried USB). I get the purple screen (with the man/keyboard at the bottom) and after that the screen flashes bright white before going black. Ubuntu continues to load in the background, with login sound etc but the screen is off. I have tried as many different solutions as I could find including: using nomodestep, xforcevesa, i915.modeset=0, and also now i915.modeset=1 in boot options (seperately): varying consequences, but either I end up at a blinking cursor with no prompt, a command line (startx fails: no screen found), or the original blank screen again Tried booting from VirtualBox - it crashes at the same place the screen would go blank when using a CD/USB tried 11.04: I don't have this problem BUT when trying to install, I get a ubi-partman error 141 (possibly down to the three partitions that came on my laptop... not sure why HP needed there own separate partition for HP Tools...) Model: HP Pavillion DV6 6B08SA Processor: AMD Quad-Core A6-3410MX APU with Radeon HD 6545G2 Dual Graphics (1.6 GHZ 4 MB L2 cache ) Chipset: AMD RS880M Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want to be able to partition the drive and install Ubuntu. I'm assuming the issue is graphics card related, although I have no confirmation of that. Update: Tried the ?orkarounds on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/BlankScreen - set gfxpayload=text changed nothing, removing splash did nothing and setting vesafb.nonsense=1 did nothing either. • Update live USB distro?

  I have Lubuntu 14.04 (and Ubuntu 14.04) on a pair of USB disks created by writing the img files to USB using dd on Mac OS X. Unfortunately these systems both have some known bugs (that have since been corrected) and lack certain important drivers for my system (which I have located online). How can I make the USB disks writable and how do I update the distribution upon them as one may do for a locally-installed system? And if I later proceed to install from these USB sticks onto a hard-drive, will they ‘carry’ the package and driver updates with them or will I have to start from scratch again? (I seem to remember from my ancient Windows XP days that such procedures were referred to as ’slipstreaming’ or somesuch on that side of the fence.) (No, I did not create a persistence partition when I created the sticks, because from Mac clearly that isn’t an option. And anyway, as I imperfectly understand it, the persistence partition is for user files and not for the modification of the system.)

  Hello, I am looking for a Live Video Streaming solution, The clients will be able to watch the video with a plugin (Flash or Silverlight), or a Standalone application (Windows Media Player, FLV, etc). But I can't choose between Microsoft Solution (Windows Media Server (MMS, RTSP) + Silverlight as client) or the Adobe solution (Flash Media Server (RTMP) + Flash/Flex). The streaming is for short duration cast and will not be online 24/24h. I tried both, and I found the cheaper version of FMS don't provide security to prevent users to register as published (You have to write custom module...), the Windows Media Server provide this function. We already have Windows Server licences. (So Windows Media Server will be "Free") What do you recommend ? What is the best between Flash or Silverlight for Live Video Streaming ? Thank you !

• Hadoop streaming with Python and python subprocess

  I have established a basic hadoop master slave cluster setup and able to run mapreduce programs (including python) on the cluster. Now I am trying to run a python code which accesses a C binary and so I am using the subprocess module. I am able to use the hadoop streaming for a normal python code but when I include the subprocess module to access a binary, the job is getting failed. • Update Manager unable to get updates

• HTTP Builder/Groovy - lost 302 (redirect) handling?

  Dear All: I am reading here http://groovy.codehaus.org/modules/http-builder/doc/handlers.html "In cases where a response sends a redirect status code, this is handled internally by Apache HttpClient, which by default will simply follow the redirect by re-sending the request to the new URL. You do not need to do anything special in order to follow 302 responses." This seems to work fine when I simply use the get() or post() methods without a closure. However, when I use a closure, I seem to lose 302 handling. Is there some way I can handle this myself? Thank you p.s.   I've been using Ubuntu one for several years and have purchased several albums from the Ubuntu One music store. All was well while I was playing them from Rhythmbox or Banshee. However, I recently started using the U.O. streaming android app and streaming section of the one.ubuntu.com website and most of my music appears to be untagged. What is going on? Before this question is dismissed as a duplicate, let me reiterate the crucial differences: ALL of the music in my U.O. account was bought in the Ubuntu One music store. This is NOT music that I ripped or bought elsewhere The mp3s that end up on my hard drive DO appear to be tagged correctly The issue affects the U.O. Streaming Music Android app AND the website (viewed in Chrome on my Win7 work PC) Is this some problem with the streaming service? Is there anything I can do?

• HTTP 1.0 vs 1.1

  Could somebody give me a brief overview of the differences between HTTP 1.0 and HTTP 1.1? I've spent some time with both of the RFCs, but haven't been able to pull out a lot of difference between them. Wikipedia says this: HTTP/1.1 (1997-1999) Current version; persistent connections enabled by default and works well with proxies. Also supports request pipelining, allowing multiple requests to be sent at the same time, allowing the server to prepare for the workload and potentially transfer the requested resources more quickly to the client. But that doesn't mean a lot to me. I realize this is a somewhat complicated subject, so I'm not expecting a full answer, but can someone give me a brief overview of the differences at a bit lower level? By this I mean that I'm looking for the info I would need to know to implement either an HTTP server or application. I realize that this can be a somewhat complicated subject (based on what I know about HTTP as of right now), so I'm not necessarily looking for a full answer. I'm really more looking for a nudge in the right direction so that I can figure it out on my own.

• HTTP Headers for Unknown Content-Length

  I am currently trying to stream content out to the web after a trans-coding process. This usually works fine by writing binary out to my web stream, but some browsers (specifically IE7, IE8) do not like not having the Content-Length defined in the HTTP header. I believe that "valid" headers are supposed to have this set. What is the proper way to stream content to the web when you have an unknown Content-Length? The trans-coding process can take awhile, so I want to start streaming it out as it completes.

• Git push over http (using git-http-backend) and Apache is not working

  I have desperately been trying to get push for git working through the "smart-http" mode using git-http-backend. However after many hours of testing and troubleshooting, I am still left with error: Cannot access URL http://localhost/git/hello.git/, return code 22 fatal: git-http-push failed` I am using latest versions of Ubuntu (12.04), Apache2 (2.2.22) and Git (1.7.9.5) and have followed different tutorials found on the Internet, like this one http://www.parallelsymmetry.com/howto/git.jsp.
