  I've noticed many sites are able to use a username or page title as an action. How is this done? For example instead of www.example.com/users/my_username (where the users action is generic and responsible for fetching user data) how could I make this www.example.com/my_username?   Does anyone know a solution to this problem? I'm unable to open a subdirectory within a symboliclink'd directory. I've confirmed that the paths are correct (even copy & pasted the path into explorer, which parsed it fine). This is a strange, annoying, bug :|. • how to handle exceptions/errors in php?

  when using 3rd part libraries they tend to throw exceptions to the browser and hence kill the script. eg. if im using doctrine and insert a duplicate record to the database it will throw an exception. i wonder, what is best practice for handling these exceptions. should i always do a try...catch? but doesn't that mean that i will have try...catch all over the script and for every single function/class i use? Or is it just for debugging? i don't quite get the picture. Cause if a record already exists in a database, i want to tell the user "Record already exists". And if i code a library or a function, should i always use "throw new Expcetion($message, $code)" when i want to create an error? Please shed a light on how one should create/handle exceptions/errors. Thanks

  So Ive got a pretty big array of data and need to sort them by two criteria. There is variable $data['important'] and $data['basic']. They are simple numbers and I am using uasort to sort $data firstly by important and then by basic.   Hi everybody, We have a web server that we're about to launch a number of applications onto. They will all share database and memcached servers, but each application has it's own mySQL database and all memcached keys per application, is prefixed. Possible scenario: If a memcached server in our cluster goes boom, we want someone (operative system admin) to be automatically contacted by email/iphone push notification or in any other appropriate way. If we we're about to install 150 identical applications for our customers on our servers, and a memcached server dies - all 150 applications will individually find this out and contact our system admin, which most certainly is going to think about getting a new job where he or she isn't about to be woken up by getting 150 messages sent 4:15 in the morning. Possible solution: One idea is to set up an external server for error handling that gets a $_POST or cURL request sent, and handles storage of the error message depending on the seriousness of the actual error message. It would of course check upon receiving the error call, that if the same memcached server have already been reported as offline, there would be no need to spam the system admin with additional reminders... The questions: What's a good approach on how to handle errors? How does the big guys in the industry handle this? Thanks!

  i need a pattern which satisfies mysql field names, but also with the option of having a table name before it examples: mytable.myfield myfield my4732894__7289FiEld here's what i tried: $pattern = "/^[a-zA-Z0-9_]*?[\.[a-zA-Z0-9_]]?$/"; this worked for what i needed before, which was just the field name: $pattern = "/^[a-zA-Z0-9_]*$/"; any ideas why my addition isnt working? maybe i'm making up regex, so i'll explain what i added... the first '?' is to say that it isn't greedy, ie. it will stop if the next part, namely "[.[a-zA-Z0-9_]]?" is satisfied. now, that second part is just the same as the first except it is optional (hence the '?' at the end) and it starts with a period (hence the '[.' and ']' wrapping my old clause. and obviously, the "^" and "$" rep the beginning and end of the string so... any ideas? (also, i'm a tad confused as to why i need to put in those "/"s in the begining/end anyways, so if you could tell me why it's required, that'd be awesome) thanks a lot! (and thanks for reading this all if you actually did... it's quite a ramble)
