• What is the use of Association, Aggregation and Composition (Encapsulation) in Classes

  I have gone through lots of theories about what is encapsulation and the three techniques of implementing it, which are Association, Aggregation and Composition. What i found is, Encapsulation Encapsulation is the technique of making the fields in a class private and providing access to the fields via public methods. If a field is declared private, it cannot be accessed by anyone outside the class, thereby hiding the fields within the class. For this reason, encapsulation is also referred to as data hiding. Encapsulation can be described as a protective barrier that prevents the code and data being randomly accessed by other code defined outside the class. Access to the data and code is tightly controlled by an interface. The main benefit of encapsulation is the ability to modify our implemented code without breaking the code of others who use our code. With this feature Encapsulation gives maintainability, flexibility and extensibility to our code. Association Association is a relationship where all object have their own lifecycle and there is no owner. Let’s take an example of Teacher and Student. Multiple students can associate with single teacher and single student can associate with multiple teachers but there is no ownership between the objects and both have their own lifecycle. Both can create and delete independently. Aggregation Aggregation is a specialize form of Association where all object have their own lifecycle but there is ownership and child object can not belongs to another parent object. Let’s take an example of Department and teacher. A single teacher can not belongs to multiple departments, but if we delete the department teacher object will not destroy. We can think about “has-a” relationship. Composition Composition is again specialize form of Aggregation and we can call this as a “death” relationship. It is a strong type of Aggregation. Child object dose not have their lifecycle and if parent object deletes all child object will also be deleted. Let’s take again an example of relationship between House and rooms. House can contain multiple rooms there is no independent life of room and any room can not belongs to two different house if we delete the house room will automatically delete. The question is: Now these all are real world examples. I am looking for some description about how to use these techniques in actual class code. I mean what is the point for using three different techniques for encapsulation, How these techniques could be implemented and How to choose which technique is applicable at time.

• More smaller maps among which player can travel

  I am developing 2d game, where maps are tile based, small about 20x20 tiles and player can travel between a lot of maps (in my game rooms) like this. The maps are connected sometimes verticaly and sometimes horizontaly and together they make one big cave. Should I create a class where one 2d array holds all the maps (another 2d arrays), or is there any other way? Whats the most efficient way to create them in this class? Thank you for your help.

  Hi everyone, my name is Joash Mitei. I am a graduate Intern at Oracle Systems Kenya and I will briefly take you through our offices and the working environment here in Nairobi, Kenya. I’ve been with Oracle since February 2012 and I’m responsible for Applications Pre-sales focusing on Oracle EPM and E-Business Suite. My background is Finance and Accounting therefore joining Oracle was almost a totally a different ball game but the transition has been smooth. The Oracle offices here are located on the second floor of Mebank Towers. We moved to the 2nd floor just three months ago from the 5th floor mainly because of the growing workforce. We are covering the whole Eastern Africa region hence diversity in culture is evident. This is a plus since you get to interact with people of very different backgrounds, cultures and ways of thinking. The building itself is on the outskirts of the CBD hence free from the hustle and bustle of the town. The office is split into different sections; there is a main working area which has an open desk design that fosters interaction between colleagues, there are 4 conference rooms for meetings and presentations, there are 3 quiet rooms for a little privacy when needed and there is a dining area for meals and ‘hanging out’. The working environment is world-class, to say the least. The employees are very professional, quite smart and needless to say, very busy. There are 4 interns covering sales and pre-sales in both Tech and Apps. As an intern you get support from your supervisor but you are required to show initiative yourself and thus the need to be very pro-active and inquisitive. The local management is well structured and communicative to ensure effectiveness and efficiency in the office. Apart from the daily work, we usually have events to boost staff morale such as ‘TGIF hang -out’, football matches against each other or versus other companies, and team building retreats. All these are monumental in fostering the RED POTENTIAL. We also do numerous CSR activities in the local communities . Well, that’s the Kenyan office for you. Glad to be your tour guide. • Good PC-based video conference control tools?

  I'm looking to improve the user experience in our video conference rooms, by simplifying the things users do all the time (setting up a call, muting and unmuting, panning and zooming between a few room-appropriate presets) and totally taking away the functions that we don't use or that are more likely to ruin the experience (changing the brightness of the TV, using the VNC presenter mode). The rooms each have Tandberg Edge or MXP video units, I'm not looking at PC-based solutions like Skype or iChat. The classic way to do this would be to plunk down huge money for an AMX or Crestron panel. This does have some advantages, and I am considering that approach, but in my initial investigation, that looks expensive, inflexible, and proprietary. On the other hand, the Tandberg video units I'm looking to control are very thorough XML API (PDF), so some of the integration magic that Crestron and AMX consider to be a value add, I could reproduce at mashup speeds. Anyone aware of an Open Source or Commercial product that takes advantage of the readily available web APIs, some simple touch screen PCs, and builds a product that is more like skinning an AJAX web app, and ideally more cost effective than the proprietary panels?

• What determines what resolutions a laptop is willing to output over VGA?

  I'm responsible for several conference rooms and have setup 1080p projectors and I provide both HDMI and VGA connectivity. HDMI for DisplayPort and Mini-DisplayPort, and VGA as a fallback, universal option. Contrary to what I expected, people seem to have much more trouble with the HDMI than VGA, so VGA gets used a lot more than you'd think (even as most workstation laptops made in the last 3-4 years have DisplayPort or Mini-DisplayPort...). Also to my surprise, VGA outputs over 1080p on a 50ft cable run with very minimal degradation on certain laptops - other laptops just don't offer 1080p as a resolution choice and top out at 1600x1200 or something else. Specific example: a ThinkPad W530 will do 1080p, a W520 won't, over VGA. (both do 1080p over displayport/mini-DP) What determines what resolutions a laptop is willing to output over VGA? I'm thinking this will come down to either a video driver that says it supports only certain resolutions for output, or limitations of the RAMDAC (which wouldn't be in play, at least DAC wise, on a digital output, but WOULD on VGA, an analog output). The basic reason for the question is that I noticed, say, a ThinkPad W520 with 1080p built in display, will output 1080p fine over DisplayPort to a 1080p projector, but will cap out at 1600x1200 (practically the same pixel count, just a little shy) on VGA. Now, this wouldn't be surprising at all except SOME laptops have no issue outputting 1080p over VGA, even with lower native resolutions. Why do I care? Well if there's some way I could enable it... for situations where my users end up using VGA anyway, it's preferable for display mirroring if they can output their laptop's native resolution, which, you guessed it, is very often 1080p on 15" models. DISCLAIMER: This is primarily a curiosity, I'm not claiming 1080p over VGA is ideal by any means, but hey, if it works. I've seen HDMI start artifacting more over same-length, same gauge cabling (up to 50' run in certain rooms). If you think this is better suited to SuperUser, please move it, but this is framed from an IT standpoint of something that affects a real pool of users in a multiple conference room, 50+ deployed laptop scenario.

• computer build for extreme tabbed browsing

  I'm interested in building or buying a task-specific computer for my brother. His requirements are ridiculously simple: the machine has to be able to wait in hundreds of web-based virtual waiting rooms at once and not crash. To be competitive, he needs to be able to enter the waiting rooms an dauto-refresh them faster. My question is, what priority do I give the different specs? My initial surmise is this: Connection speed (nothing to do with my build, but I kind of think this will be more beneficial than anything I build for him) Memory size -- I don't usually see firefox taking up more than a gig, even when heavily tabbed, but I think one gig for the operating system and two gigs for the browser are necessary. Processor speed -- I think the processor will affect performance, but even something out of date will do what he needs Memory speed/RAM bus -- I doubt this will matter much, but it seems just on this side of irrelevant. Everything else is a non-issue for him. Does this seem to stack up correctly? Also, since he's looking to stay on the cheaper side, and I might end up recommending a refurb to him, is there anything particularly egregious that Vista would do if it came pre-installed? If I build it myself, I'll give him linux, but if I have it shipped to him, I'm not sure I could walk him through the install process for linux, but I probably could walk him through the process to upgrade to Windows 7, if it were somehow worth it.

• Calendar booking issue - Exchange 2003 and 2010

  In our organization we are running Exchange 2003 and 2010 simultaneously, with the hopes of migrating everyone to Exchange 2010 sometime within the next few months. Everyone is using Outlook 2010. Recently, we had an issue with transaction log storage on the Exchange 2003 server. This was resolved, but for some reason no meeting rooms on the Exchange 2003 server will automatically book meetings any longer. I have played around with this for a while, changing calendar permissions, turning resource scheduling off and back on, etc. No dice. My next step was to try migrating a resource to the Exchange 2010 server. After doing so, and setting it up as a Room, enabling Auto-Accept and removing the EnableDirectBooking registry entry on my PC, I can book a meeting with this room. If EnableDirectBooking is enabled, I get an error message stating: "Meeting Room" declined your meeting because it is recurring. You must book each meeting separately with this resource. This is despite the fact that the meeting I'm attempting to create has no recurrence. Now, I have also created a new test Room from scratch on the Exchange 2010 server, and I can book a meeting with this Room regardless of whether or not I have the EnableDirectBooking reg entry in place. All users here have this registry entry, and I'd rather not have to figure out how to push something out to remove it from every PC. Rather, I'd like to figure out what's different between the configurations of these two meeting rooms so that I could book a meeting room regardless of whether EnableDirectBooking is enabled or not. Any ideas, anyone? Thanks!

  After attending several Java conferences world wide, this was my very first time at Devoxx. Here are some items I found that happens only at Devoxx ... Pioneers of theater-style seating - This not only provides comfortable seating for each attendee but the screens are very clearly visible to everybody in the room. Intellectual level of attendees is very high - Read more explanation on the Java EE 6 lab blog. In short, a lab, 1/3 of the content delivered at Devoxx 2011, could not be completed at other developer days in more than 1/3 the time. Snack box for lunches - Even though this suits well to the healthy lifestyle of multiple-snacks-during-a-day style but leaves attendees hungry sooner in the day. The longer breaks before the next snack in the evening does not help at all. Fortunately, Azure cupcakes and Android ice creams turned out to be handy. I finally carried my own apple :-) Wrist band instead of lanyard - The good part about this is that once tied to your hand then you are less likely to forget in your room. But OTOH you are a pretty much a branded conference attendee all through out the city. It was cost effective as it costed 20c as opposed to 1 euro for the lanyard. Live streaming from theater #8 (the biggest room) on parleys.com All talks recorded and released on parleys.com over next year. This allows attendees to not to miss any session and watch replay at their own leisure. Stephan promised to start sharing the sessions by mid December this year. No need to pre-register for a session - This is true for most of the conferences but bigger rooms (+ overflow room for key sessions) provide sufficient space for all those who want to attend the session. And of course all sessions are available on parleys.com anyway! Community votes on whiteboard - Devoxx attendees gets a chance to vote on topics ranging from their favorite non-Java language, operating system, or love from Oracle. Captured pictures at the end of Day 2 are shown below. Movie on the last but one night - This year it was The Adventures of Tintin and was lots of fun. Fries with mayo - This is a typical Belgian thing. Guys going in ladies room to avoid the long queues ... wow! Tweet wall everywhere and I mean literally everywhere, in rooms, hallways, front desk, and other places. The tweet picking algorithm was not very clear as I never saw my tweet appear on the wall ;-) You can also watch it at wall.devoxx.com. Cozy speaker dinner with great food and wine List of parallel and upcoming sessions displayed on the screen - This makes the information more explicit with the attendees. REST API with multiple mobile clients - This API is also used by some other conferences as well. And there always is iphone.devoxx.com. Steering committee members were recognized multiple times. The committee members were clearly identifiable wearing red hoodies. The wireless SSID was intuitive "Devoxx" but hidden to avoid some crap from Microsoft Windows. All of 9000 addresses were used up most of the times with each attendee having multiple devices. A 1 GB fibre optic cable was stretched to Metropolis to support the required network bandwidth. Stephan is already planning to upgrade the equipment and have a better infrastructure next year.   I am working on a roguelike in my (very little) free time. Each level will basically be a few rectangular rooms connected together by paths. I want the paths between rooms to be natural-looking and windy, however. For example, I would not consider the following natural-looking: B X X X XX XX XX AXX I really want something more like this: B X XXXX X X X X AXXXXXXXX These paths must satisfy a few properties: I must be able to specify an area inside which they are bounded, I must be able to parameterize how windy and lengthy they are, The lines should not look like they started at one path and ended at the other. For example, the first example above looks as if it started at A and ended at B, because it basically changed directions repeatedly until it lined up with B and then just went straight there. I was hoping to use A*, but honestly I have no idea what my heuristic would be. I have also considered using a genetic algorithm, but I don't know how practical that method might end up. My question is, what is a good way to get the results I want? Please do not just specify a method like "A*" or "Dijkstra's algorithm," because I also need help with a good heuristic.

• How many WCF connections can a single host handle?

  I'll try to explain this with an example. I'm writing a chat application. There are users that can join chat rooms. A user has to log in before he can join any room. Currently, there is a single service. A user logs in using this service. Then, the user sends and receives messages for all joined rooms via this single service. channel.Login("Hans Moleman", "password"); channel.JoinRoom("name of room"); channel.SendChat("name of room", "hello"); I'm thinking about changing the design so there is a new WCF connection for each joined room. In the actual app, the number of connections is likely going to be in the range of 10-100, possibly more. Is this a good idea? Or are ~100 connections per client too much? The server should be able to handle many clients (range 100-1000, later up to 10k). In case it matters, I'm using NetTcpBinding.

• implementing match-making & community system for multiplayer games

  These days, games often have multiplayer portals with chat channels & match making system for the multiplayer aspects of the game. An example would be battle.net, magic the gathering online's chat rooms, halo etc. Now, for the rest of us indie gamers that probably won't be able to spend much development effort on creating those back-ends from scratch, what options do we have? I was thinking of something along the line of using IRC as the backbone of the system. From there, the "community" aspect and implement player tracking, game tracking and match making on top of that. It seems to be what the old battle.net (brood war era) used to be. The question is, is this easy to do? What does it take to run an irc server, and I suppose this also requires writing an IRC client (which seems to have been done a lot these days?)? If there are other ways as well (say, an open framework for this stuff), let's hear them too.

• Developing a new complex travel website

  We need to develop a completely new website for customers to choose a travel product with a contract. It needs to interface to our inventory to take the conference facility, hotel rooms etc. out of inventory once a contract has been signed (e-signature) and deposit paid. If you were starting from scratch, would you in-house or contract? If in-house, what development tools should I evaluate primarily - sharepoint, ASP.net?
